Make a WATERCOLOR BRUSH for Special Effects

  • I'm quite a frugal artist, so I decided to make a replicator brush to paint fur, instead of buying one! In fact, I feel this brush works better than the shop bought equivalents, which tend to produce lines that are too uniform and evenly spaced. My homemade brush produces random lines that are ideal for fur and feathers.

When I made some of these brushes, I used a scissor for cutting hair. This made the cutting part easier. I cut a new fan brush like a professional one, but I now only use it for grass in the background as you also said. It's too regular to be natural.
I did not use tongues on any brushes, this is a great idea. I'll try this. When one of my dogs was a puppy, he played with a brush, which now makes wonderful fur, feathers and grass. 😊
I find it funny that I'm not the only one working on art tools to make them better for certain jobs. 😁 Im not alone anymore!!! 😂🤣
YES, I will make some more special effects brushes, and I'll watch the other video on this topic next. Thank you for sharing. 👍🙏
      Regards from Germany. 🍻

I’m going to call on my old cutting and hairstyling memories to help make some of these😂. Definitely fun! Thanks Paul.

I had a good laugh at how that brush looks. Haha! I’ve made some of those brushes too, but you’ve inspired me to go and make more! I’ll have to try your crimping method

Thank you so much for this useful tip! I've been struggling to paint fur and this has worked wonders. Have made two of my own brushes already 😆

I'm glad my video helped you Rika. Remember to not use the replicator brush for the final layer, just so the fur isn't too uniformed. 😉

I was doing an Airbrush demonstration in Sydney, Australia back in the early 80's...I was doing this at their Royal Easter show and paid by a large art supplies importer They showed me these neat brushes they called "Rakes" for doing hair... sorry I don't remember the name of the manufacturer, but I still own all four and with I just saw here can answer all my needs..thanks and a very nice post.

That's lovely to hear. Yes, rake brushes are excellent to use, I do find the lines they create a little too parallel sometimes, but still very effective. :-)
