2019 Addendum: This video was made before the issue of Joy-Con drift (analog sticks registering inputs even when they aren't being touched) became really widespread, so please also put that in mind if you're debating whether or not to stick with a Joy-Con Grip or upgrading. Pro Controllers have had their D-Pads slightly redesigned starting from 2018 to attempt fixing accidental inputs, but you might consider looking up methods such as the tape fix if you wish to get a Pro Controller while also looking for a better D-Pad performance.
I did not expect to find a recent comment of AK here. Due to the Joy-Con drift issue, I personally think the Pro Controller is way better. My Joy-Cons started drifting in like a couple of months. While I could have replaced them for free due to warranty, what's the point if it's gonna drift again in a few months. If you want to be able to actually play your games, get the Pro Controller because it's impossible to play with 2 drifting Joy-Cons. Don't buy a product that breaks so easily (especially or that price).
This is actually something that happens with most modern controllers. I've tested it on xbox one, PS4 and 360. Usually games are programmed to account for that.
I hope nintendo fixes this issue, the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 controller has a proper pivot. playing tetris or street fighter with the launch pro controllers are a pain in the ass
Sideshow The Game Freak yea man the issue I'm having is that I bought 3 pro controller at launch and they all have the bad d pad. Nintendo hasn't got back to me yet about the issue but the people that got through got their controllers back from Nintendo with the same d pad issue.
Very helpful video. Considering the price of the pro controller and how I'm perfectly fine with the joy-con grip, I haven't gotten a pro controller yet. I'm pretty much waiting for two things to happen. 1: A interesting fighting game to be released on the system, for which I'd want a pro controller d-pad. 2: Just waiting a while until all the 'bad apples' (d-pad issues and the control stick issue in this vid) that people have been talking about to be filtered out of retail units being sold.
David van Mil the controll stick issue (the flick back) happens because of a too strong spring and too much swing, you get that on the ps4 controller even
For me, games with accuracy in mind like Splatoon 2, I really like having the Pro Controller, it feels much more reliable when using the gyro aiming. When it comes to games like Breath of the Wild, where I do a lot of free roaming (probably Mario Odyssey as well) and Mario Kart 8 DX, I am perfectly fine using the Joy Cons in or out of the grip. Over all, the Pro Controller was worth the purchase, but probably not fully until I bought Splatoon 2.
You can use the pro controller as a Bluetooth gamepad controller for your PC. Which is amazing since I personally prefer it over Xbox 360 or PS4 controllers and the sync and unsync process is rather easy.
It's still Directinput, which can be a deal breaker provided you're playing newer games. 8bitdo's pro controllers, however offer native Android and Xinput support out of the box.
Yall must either have some defective dualshocks or the sticks got loose over time cause if the sticks are decently stiff this doesn't happen. It hasn't happened to me on any PlayStation controller I've used.
I have VERY large hands, but I prefer the Joy-Cons' smaller, clickier buttons, smaller analog stick, and the smaller shoulder buttons. I also prefer the directional buttons over the D-pad and I like being able to hold my hands in any position (in my pockets, stretched out, etc.) when playing (I play with them separate, one in each hand). I typically play for quite long play sessions and never have any problems nor does it feel at all uncomfortable to me, even though I have large hands. In fact, the Joy-Cons are my favourite controllers in terms of ergonomics/comfortability, usage/functionality, and everything else.
Steven Paul Doyle. Really that’s quite interesting. I have slim hands and I find the Joy-Cons really uncomfortable with certain games where the buttons are too small and dig into my fingers (Mario Kart, Splatoon) so I prefer the Pro Controller’s bigger buttons.
You probably like the separate joycons *because* you have very large hands - no more finger collisions and wrist cramps when you can have as much space as you want between them.
@@DoctorPhileasFragg well I have long thin hands and I only play with them separated. As he's saying I can be in any position and still playing (like, with a hand behind my head)
Just play Tetris on the Pro-Controller. Nearly impossible because pieces just drop constantly when you are trying to move them left and right yet the D-pad inadvertently registers a down input. The Pro-Controller is awesome but it does have this issue and all I can say about the multiple ways of using the controls is - Different strokes for different folks and games.
I have tried playing the Puyo Puyo Tetris Demo with the Pro Controller and didn't really encounter such an issue. Granted I could just be lucky or it's just a manufacturing problem.
Really??? I just got a second Pro-Controller and will give it another shot. Hopefully it was just that controller but it was sure annoying. In any case that's what I love about the Switch, the versatility, no biggy really.
I haven't noticed my pro controller's right stick flicking to the other side at all, but granted I've only used it for Splat 2 so far with motion controls on, so if it has happened to me it's really hard to notice. I love the pro controller for Splatoon so far though. However, I still think I'd rather use the joycons for ARMS and Mariokart as the motion controls with the joycons feels perfect to me for those games.
The flicking issue doesn't really affect your movement in-game, the places where it shows for me is during the in-game menus. Good points about the motion controls! ARMS is definitely more immersive when played with the thumbs up grip and a split Joy-Con for Mario Kart feels better than twisting a full controller around imo.
The stuff with the pro controller is pretty easy to explain. The D-pad thing is caused by pushing it too close to the center, and may be the reason sony separates the directions somewhat. The joystick thing is improperly configured dead zones.
The stick problem is because how loose they are if nintendo made them a little more stiff it wouldn't happen. Cause I've never had it happen to me on any PlayStation controller, the 360 controller or any other nintendo controller I've used. Only on the xbox one and pro controller does this happen from my experience.
I find the Joy-Con Grip to be perfectly satisfactory for single player games and for multiplayer I got a second pair. I'm not sure if I want a Pro Controller.
Naveek Darkroom you can get the Mario Wired Pro Controller which has the B button in the back but I still prefer the Joycon grip that comes with the Nintendo Switch
The reason the joystick sometimes flicks backwards is because it has a longer distance to travel, so as the kinetic energy builds up it is enough to push it in the other direction, as when you flick’t, t’bounces of the stopper and causes a release wave which pushes the joystick further in the other direction, and inputs the command to go in the opposite direction to the way you flicked’t in.
Good video. There's a lot of other controllers that work with the switch over bluetooth like the 8bitdo controllers. You could take a look at those in future videos :)
I mean, I've played in docked mode a total of about less than 15 times, so I usually just have the joycons attached to the system itself (which is surprisingly comfortable to hold)
Plus it doesn’t have motion control or rumble and you’re at the mercy of the cord hoping nobody trips over it and knocks off your system 🙃 mother of 3 it happens a lot 😭
I did initially consider buying the Pro Controller, but after using the Joy-Con Grip for a while, I got used to it. It actually has a fairly good feel in my small hands.
This video nails the JoyCon grip vs Pro Controller experience! Excellent work! The only points I'd like to add would be these: The Pro Controller's analogue sticks' intermittent tendency to spring a little bit past center when releasing from its outer most range (mine does this too) doesn't really affect gameplay. But I also don't find myself doing that when gaming anyways. I suspect most other gamers don't either. The Pro Controller's D Pad kinda sucks. It's too stiff, has too much travel and is rather imprecise (as you mentioned in the video). Ironic considering Nintendo invented the D Pad... Anyways. I too prefer the JoyCon sticks over the D Pad. Side note: Anyone looking to play 2D games might want to consider 8bitDo's offerings.
Hey! Where did 50 pounds of my bodyweight go? Oh you got rid of it for letting me know I’m not the only one that had that weird analog stick registering in the opposite direction when you flick it fast glitch! Thanks ;).
Pros and cons that cracked me up What I thin’ of the prop controller is,that it’s not a must buy straight away but defiantly think about it after awhile
2:41 I occasionally have this but I feel like Thats recoil from constantly flicking and it being unable to register the movement, hopefully this helps with your problem
With arcade joysticks the overshooting the dead zone is called deflection. It becomes more pronounced the higher the spring tension. It should go away as the spring that returns the stick to center loosens up.
I understand, I was just poking fun at the contradictory statement. How youtube works your method of viewing works perfectly fine as it's not as if content creator get paid by subcount. You do you
Let’s talk about the word “three”. Three. THree. Nowhere in this English spelling of the number THREE, does the letter “F” appear. If I tell you an item is THREE dollars, and you give me the same item for FREE, I make money and you don’t. “Th” and “F” are not interchangeable. This announcement brought to you by humor and the letter “F”, neither of which made an appearance in this video
4:10 When I flicked with my left Joy-con it would sometimes stay stuck. Actually recently the joystick button got messed up and now it no longer "clicks" :c
The think you flicking the stick and it moving the opposite direction slightly is momentum. You're flicking it, so the sudden movement backwards can move it back slightly.
Are there any games that require one or the other? Like motion games, Arms or Mario party? The only possible setback of the pro controller is that you can’t have it in both hands like you can in the joy cons.
3:30 i'm pretty sure every controller with traditional analog sticks does this, not just nintendo controllers either, i think it depends on how heavy the analog stick is or how loose the analog mechanism is, so if it's an older controller it will do it more
my controller also goes to the opposite direction when quickly flicking the control stick. its especcially annoying when navigating the private battle menus in splatoon 2 for me.
Is it possible that the pro controller analogue stick flicks thingy is because it has a bit of momentum from flicking itself back to its regular position causing it to register a little bit of input from the opposite direction?
The right analogue stick being in the way is actually how I use it. I nudge it with the bottom of my thumb so I can look around and use the buttons at the same time.
2019 Addendum:

Brendan Keller now thats a joke
the flicking issue at 3:30 is due to the stick itself swinging a little bit to the other side when released, not to software issues
It can be resolved with a few adjustments in the mechanism of the pro controller but I doubt it's needed now.
Pear Guy either way its still a problem he had
Suci???
This is actually something that happens with most modern controllers. I've tested it on xbox one, PS4 and 360. Usually games are programmed to account for that.
@@Gadgetmawombo It's just people are worried because... well... smash bros.

I'm not sure I can recall any analog stick that doesn't have this problem in some cases. Even some old school joysticks had the problem.

Yup. Let’s just tape our phone to the switch because it’s better.
It goes into the console.
note the problem at 4:00 is the same with most controllers as the stick still has momentum when resetting

The think you flicking the stick and it moving the opposite direction slightly is momentum. You're flicking it, so the sudden movement backwards can move it back slightly.
4:44 they both have two (yes the pro controller also has 2)

I had the same problem with the Wii u pro controller at 4:12. That really made perfect pivoting in Smash 4 a lot harder than it should be.
If someone knows where the sound effect that plays during the intro comes from, please tell me. I recognize it, but I can't remember where from.
i just love the snappy feel of the joy cons analog sticks for mario kart. when i am drifting i am just snapping left and right all the time.
I decided to get extra joycons so I could split them and play have 4 players, instead of 3 for the same price of the Pro controller.
The right analogue stick being in the way is actually how I use it. I nudge it with the bottom of my thumb so I can look around and use the buttons at the same time.
Really digging your commentary style! Just subscribed ^^
