I had a professor in film school who was shooting a film and when I asked her what she was shooting on, she said "Cookes". Before camera, she singled out the lenses. Truly an industry standard tool!
One benefit of the Cooke MiniS4s is that they have smooth round bokeh at t/2.8 since that’s their max aperture. :) The images is gorgeous especially at minimum focus distance.
I hadn't head about the slight defocus of the red wavelengths in the secondary spectrum before. One of the key aspects of the Cooke look I thought was a spherical focus plane that gives the focus point more '3D pop'.
One thing I would love is a comparison video between S4s and sets of Dulens, DZO, Meike and so on like "what set of affordable lenses is the closest to the Cooke Look". (might be counter productive for a store carrying Cooke lenses, I know :p)
Shot a pilot on Cooke Anamorphics with an ARRI LF. It was a period piece so we added pro mist and glimmer glass and now I’m head over heals in love with the combo ❤ most shows I work on can’t afford cookes 😅
I’ll admit it! Sometimes when I order something from CVP or chat with the costumer service I am imaging that Jake is on there other end typing or carefully packing my order and that makes it beter!
It's really amazing that we have a lens manufacturer! I wish they made some more affordable ones though, haha. I would love to see the image from these next to a Lumix S 1.8 lens though
Modern lenses are made for brick wall comparison, this is the most important thing for the masses and dxo mark. sharpness. similar is the megapixel race with cameras. If you want lenses with character the cheapest you can get are Leica R´s.
Is this my chance to rep the SLR Magic APO Microprimes!? Obviously not the same, not exactly the same bokeh, but still REALLY REALLY pleasing. We’re using them with a Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera. We have some stuff up on TH-cam under Plum Tree Cinema if anyone feels like taking a look
I love Cooke lenses, the S4's in particular. Cooke does a great job of avoiding the modern hyper clinical look without going overboard on the "imperfections". Their only downside for me is their size and weight, but it's usually worth it for the build quality. Spherical lenses tend to all look so similar that even an experienced DP will have a hard time separating them, if they can at all. Panavision is the only other brand I can think of making spherical lenses that provide a unique and noticeable look.
@@305kubrick Ah, I know what you mean: SIGMA'S CEO recently mentioned this "3D vintage look" thing in an interview he gave to DPREVIEW. He said SIGMA analysed what exactly movie makers meant by their request for this lens characteristic and discovered that this terminology is simply their way of saying "spherical distortion". Obviously something so simple CAN be added in post. I guess it'll be more an issue of not overdoing the effect and using it in moderation instead.
@@87solarsky Shoot with a vintage lens without aspherical elements. In post: Add a bit of warmth by adding some yellow and a bit of magenta in your wb settings. Add a radial power window in resolve - blur the edges ever so slightly. add a bit of barrel distortion and vignetting. Voila, le cooke look..
@@87solarsky Well, I don't think you really can because cooke's have physical wider glass which is able to wrap around the image more. You cannot achieve this in post. I'm not a lens expert by any means, but based off shoot outs between Cookes and other lenses, the added dimensionality of the Cookes is very noticeable.
I worked in a rental house and I have to be honest, apart from their solid construction there isn't much difference between the Cooke and the cheaper Rokinon Ds. Like many things in this industry they are highly overrated and idolized in a religious way. In what if they are incomparable is in increasing the price of a production and of course feeding technicians like me. 😅
If you have any questions about Cooke lenses let us know below!!
Are you in LA?

Once you shoot on Cooke's you'll understand why they are industry standard. Just beautiful optics and imagery.

this is the best film channel. I love hearing you talk. So calming.
Thanks for the kind words and watching!! Jake
@@CVPTV you’re the man jake! Of course. ❤️
Adding the on location reporting to this documentary made it really great!

actually I dont think that would subtract from the usual Cooke customer base. there is a cvp test of all lenses mentioned except the Cookes btw.
Honestly the closest is the Mamiya 645 still lenses. Very similar color rendering.
@@apocryphal_man Yes I had this specific test in mind when typing ^^
@@geoffreybassett6741 I LOOOOVE those lenses. (don't own any, but shot actual 6x4.5 film with them and loved it)

Loveeee this kind of video! Can we get a similar one on some Arri and Leitz Cine lenses? Cheers!
I remember I DPd a couple projects with S4s in film school, and I always loved the look
Panchros are best lenses for my taste for sure

Very nicely put together, can we hear more from Ben Cridge.

great video (as always)!
wow awesome i never new we made such lenses in England i thought we were way behind
0:28 Is their a cheaper alternative? This manual costs 170-195€ which is incredibly expensive in my opinion.
Would be great if you made a video about the cooke s7i lenses, No one on youtube even mentions them.
S4 cooke Harry potter and the prizioner of azkaban used these lendes my fav movie of them all!!
I appreciate you putting me in the thumbnail
Great video. Been wanting to get my hands on Cine Lens Manual
Woooo Leicester! Didn't know they were based here :D That's awesome
Awesome video! Would love to see a video on the new modern FF Panchro lenses.
Is there a big difference between these and the mini version?
CAN YOU MAKE A REVIEW ABOUT THE TOKINA VISTA PRIME LENSES?... PLEASE!!!..
what is the difference between the S7/i & Panchro/i other than the aperture?
Infomrative video Thanks CVP.
is there a way to show us side by side S4 vs S8 in an outdoor environment, daylight
can you uses and LPL mount for the red v raptor?
I love those lenses
Who would have thought nerdy stuff can be this interesting
CVP - what camera was used for broll ?? Nice images
Studio broll is RED KOMODO. Footage at Cooke was FX6 and KOMODO. Footage in projection room was FX3. Jake
Surprised you didn't mention the s4/i zoom which is the same speed as the primes
Great video! I love the insight into those amazing pieces of art.
Thanks for watching Robin! Jake

Can I use a Cooke lens on a Canon C70?
If you have the right adapters, nearly anything is possible. Be sure to plan for manual focusing.
In my country, this book costs 200$... it seems excessively expensive to me. On the other hand, I would love to have it.
I'm planning to buy it for birthday. It's not just a book, it's like a textbook for the sake of collection and researching
how do you edit a video file in 8k on a new macbook air 15 inch m2?
With immense difficulty
I just looked at the price.... lawd
Cook, does it cook something anyway ?
what about the hexagon bokeh
They mentioned it briefly
Honestly, I'm excited to not use them. They seem a bit overrated based on this. More legacy than genuine character quality. Great review as always.
How do you add 'The Cook Look' in post?
How hard can it be?
Cooke's are known for their increased 3 dimensional imagery compared to other high end lenses. You cannot achieve this in post.
