I've had a pair of these for a couple of years now and really like them. Until I saw your review I didn't realize all the capabilities of this tool. I've removed the outer sheath from Romex with a utility knife not knowing that this tool can do it quicker and better! I am amazed at how easy it stripped the sheath off of the outdoor direct-burial cable too. That is a bear to strip with a utility knife! I also never thought of stripping more than one wire at the same time either. Doh! Thanks for this review. I learned more about a tool that I already own and have used many times.
I've had a pair of these for about three years now. I don't even look at the other strippers in my tool box. Irwin self adjusting are my go to wire strippers for everything.
@@abrown372 I don't do much electrical work. I got these mostly for smaller electronic devices. So, I don't have a good answer for that. Sorry. I can say that they've worked well with what I've used them for. Also, they're usually much more convenient than my other wire strippers that has predefined holes.
Depth guage, where have you been my whole life! The pairs I have don't have that feature and I always end up having to make a second cut to get the wire to the desired size. Great find, Sir! Going in the shopping cart. Thank you for uploading!
Great tool review. I bought the exact same tool last year. No regrets saves so much time when doing wiring jobs. Great for household and automotive applications.
I love my pair fof them. Ive had them for a little while and tey get a lot of use. I like how you can strip in the middle of wire to splice them together. Its a really nice tool. The reason why I picked the Irwin over the Klein is the crimper offers more capabilities.
Brendan Hollingsworth Thanks Brendan! I did not mention the splicing part, since I was worried the average person may try this with 110v AC power & shock themselves....but you are correct, they can do that also --- great for low voltage DC soldered connections!
A nice feature not touched on is the vice ability allowing you not to pull on the wire to remove the insulation possible loosening it at the opposite connection. Short wires in difficult places (automotive) leaving little room to get a grip is frustrating. We all know how it turns out.
Three years ago, a friend let me use his. It was love at first sight. Wish I had them whenever they first came out. Wire stripping was always a chore until I stumbled over that tool.
already had this item ready to be added to my cart on amazon....after watching your helpful video, i clicked your link before adding; great video; here's hoping there's no user magic in using these things and it's an easy skill/feel to use these. A+! thanks!
Scoszko 35 Thanks! I found out about the multiple wire abilities by accident....but it has always worked, so I threw that in there :) Glad I could help!
You can if it is this style. Some of the other automatic wire strippers have different sized dies that you have to put the wire into, similar to a standard stripper.
Thanks. So what is with the three colors/guages for crimping? It looks as if they are all adjacent to the same indentation. And what are the other weird shapes further down the handle for?
Was wondering how these worked.. saw someone on a show using them, and was wondering if they'd be ok for me and my projects.. ordering them now on amazon. Thanks.. this was more than detailed enough to let me understand precisely what I wanted to know :)
Great review and it couldn't come at a better time. I just sent in my application to become an electrician apprentice. I will definitely be picking this up in the future
Will definitely, be getting a pair of these. I've had the old style automatic for over 40 years and it's a pain because you have to line up the wire to little holes, just like the manual ones. This one looks like the bee's knees.
Jordan Booth Thanks Jordan! Yeah, it is one of those tools that you have a hard time envisioning in use...they dont look like what you normally see at all....but work great!
Really nice strippers, they will certainly save a lot of time on the job. I really like how you have a depth gauge so you are consistently cutting the same length.
If it wasn't for you for doing this review I would never have known about this amazing product thank you so much I really appreciate it. Have a nice day. Can't wait to see your next awesome review!!!!!
The same tool with slight differences to mouldings is sold under a variety of brands. From memory they’re stamped with KYP Taiwan. There are similar copies though, not all are equal.
Do the Irwin’s mar up the jacketing a little on the side that isn’t stripped? I have another brand that looks identical. It strips the wire fine, but the grip teeth on the left side of the jaws mangle the insulation a little
thanks for the excellent video! i got the tool and had no idea how to use lol quick question, do you know what the small knob on the tool does? the product website says it's a micro adjuster, and I don't feel it does anything
Good video. I was going to get these but they looked exactly like the harbor freight ones so I got those instead. Waste of $9 because they weren't consistent and they cut some wire strands every time. I decided to buy some cheap generic automatic wire strippers from ebay that you have to slide in the slot for the correct size wire but then you squeeze and it strips it. Maybe I might give these a try. Thanks for the video.
***** Thanks! I have seen the cheaper pairs that "look" similar also, but rarely do I run across knockoff tools that actually perform...thanks for the input! Good luck with these!
Any idea how well these work on tefzel wire? That insulation can be a bear. Also, do the jaws leave indentations on the insulations? Some of the connectors I work with (AMPSEAL) specifically caution that some strippers cause indentations that do not play nice with the wire seals.
Cracking review and thank you for showing how the tool operates in "slow motion". Haha. That was too specific not to have happened. "Your dog has crawled under and chewed the wires up." Is is part Marder?
I have those. They're good. I've heard some talk about the quick release vice grips by irwin. theirs good ones and shitty ones.... Do you know about this? or how to tell between the ones?
It physically resists the movement of the main jaw so that the mini jaws that actually grab the insulation bite in harder before pulling off the insulation.
+cheveresalvi Thanks! I keep it cranked down tight.....it is for micro-adjusting for thin wire (I think), but I have never needed to mess around with it.
How would this do with heavy gague fine stranded wire? When I do transceiver installs the 12 gague zipcord I use is 65 strands of #30 and it's a right pain to strip this without removing the outer few strands.
ronnies07 The thickest stranded that I tried it with was 12 gauge stranded well pump wiring....it is for 220v AC power & it was way thicker of wiring & insulation than 12/2 house wire. It did that with no problem. However, I had some extra thick (unsure of gauge) coated ground wire with very thin/strong sheathing & it would not strip it....almost like a PVC coating. I guess you could always get a pair & if they dont work, just return them. Thanks for commenting!
If you haven't done a video on it, could you at least leave a reply to this comment regarding the Klein tool which is very similar to these Irwin's? I couldn't decide which ones to get a few years ago, but I was so broke that I had to settle on the Gardner Bender ones from Menards cuz they were only 13 bucks instead of 20. They're pretty great but you can tell the quality is not as good as Irwin or Klein. Any comments about comparisons? Thanks Always love your reviews
+Lt. Albert Thanks! I would guess yes.....I stripped extremely thin wiring around here & it never breaks or crimps any wires, it only pulls off the sheathing.
I just bought these after 15 years of using a Gardner-Bender Strip-Easy. It sometimes worked well but it wasn’t always easy to get the wire to line up with the gauge. Not only not having to do that, but being able to strip off a jacket with multiple wires. Wow. Can’t wait to put these Irwin’s to work!
I bought one and I very like it I showed it to my father and he liked it so much that he took mine but I bought two more just in case if someone else takes
I have a pair of these but they don't work correctly. They work sometimes on thicker gauge wires. When I use with 16 gauge speaker wire they grabbing side works, but the cutting side just scores the jacket. It doesn't remove the sheathing. Did I just get a bad pair? Or are there any adjustments on them?
Real Tool Reviews...yeah I was wondering what that screw was for...so you tighten that screw to make it grab the insulation better? And if you tighten too much it can damage the internal wires?
I wonder about hand fatigue. After stripping and terminating hundreds of different gauge wires into an electrical panel that's sitting twenty feet off the ground the last thing I need is my hands to freeze up.
I own the irwin and the harbor freight ones. The Harbor freight set works the same just with out the sliding wire length gauge. I don't use that no way.

What is the screw with the Plus/Minus symbols used for?
I have one of those. The only problem is the Part that pulls the insulation was making cut marks further down the insulation exposing extra wires.
Thanks for your review, it would help me to choose one tool.

You can take the sheathing off 2 wire house hold wire then strip all three wires at the same time.
One I just got won't do 4x 24awg wires like he does in the video. The grips just slip off the wire even on max tightness
+Edison Motors tighten the small adjustment screw up...it will work fine then.
