The context that Lawrence O'Donnell brings to his essays brings forward facts that many of us were not aware of, or have forgotten. In this he augments the powerful words that Justin Pearson speaks in his own powerful voice like few political commentators do. I had not heard of Representative Pearson until last week. I was transfixed by his speech on the floor in the midst of this shameful action by his legislative body to expel him, and now I see the resonance of history in his words. My mother’s family is from the state of Tennessee, and I am proud of my heritage and familial roots in that beautiful state. I grew up wearing the bright orange of the University of Tennessee Volunteers, and do to this day.
I am a Louisiana native, from New Orleans, another red state that has little blue oases that are fighting for our rights and our future as the radical conservative establishment of many southern states are stripping away our rights and attempting to silence the voices of change.
Like the cities that these two brave men represent, Memphis and Nashville, also music cities, we are drowning in the crimson surge of the Republican Party’s authoritarian ideology.
I am proud of Mr. Jones and Mr. Pearson for having the courage to take a stand, and the chance of personal and professional harm, against the same kind of politicians who are responsible for Jim Crow, Lynchings, the Klan, and other hateful things that we have fought against for centuries.
I sincerely hope that they both continue to stand by the truth and not allow themselves to be silenced. Dr. King would be proud of them both. They walk in his footsteps with most of the nation behind them.
