I was among the majority of Americans who by the late 1970s couldn't stand President Carter. I was also still a kid, barely a teenager when he left office. The "mule from Georgia" characterization is so fitting and it's one that politically was lethal. But even if he could have played the politics better, and he certainly could have without compromising his integrity, it's undeniable that he accomplished much in his presidency and from a policy perspective was an outstanding president. Even more, and this is cliche at this point, he was an exceptional man, uncommonly so for someone whose style was undeniably common in all of the best ways. Thank you Jimmy Carter for a life well lived and for your generous spirit. The world is a better place because of you.

Thank you for this. I lived through his presidency and remember a lot of the overarching points, but I was a child, with little true understanding. It's a sad statement on our country that the electorate won't vote for an honest man of the people. They'd rather be lied to and entertained. RIP, President Carter. You were too good for us.

I'm no longer a christian, but it is Christians like Jimmy carter that I have a deep respect and admiration of. He truly fought for the good things in the bible, and didn't dwell or fixate on the divisive, and murky things in the bible. He wanted peace, love and prosperity for us as a nation. Ironically he was one of the most despised presidents in recent history, but he was the best human being in generations that has been elected to hold the office.

President Carter’s Presidency was not a failure, it was visionary but people wanted instant gratification.

I didn’t understand how hard Carter worked for Middle East peace. I’m ashamed of my ignorance.

❤❤❤thanks so much for helping me clarify what I remember experiencing as a young university student. I grew up in a small southern town so I wanted to believe in the sincerity and honesty and living religious life. I remember so clearly the Camp David. Talks. . I wanted that to be a permanent solution and an institution for reconciliation between Israel and the PLO.

A prime example of how an American President can be brought down by national building efforts of its previous administrations.
Anyone remotely interested in what happened in Iran that brought about the hostage crisis should read “All the Shah’s Men” by Stephen Kinzer.

Being a nice guy doesn’t compensate for incompetence, weakness, and naïve

Your efforts to diminish how good this man was will not work here. Thank you for your comment. James Carter was an exceptional man regardless of what you may think.

History doesn't lie. His record is shameful. He is directly responsible for the state of the Middle East today.

Weak summation but welcome and still worthwhile. Mentions peace treaty but not Carter's ongoing views on Palestine, the Palestinians, apartheid, lobbyists that maintsin system and our oligarchy capture of politics and society at large.
