2:50, may be wrong, but I think what happened to his economy is that he went liberal, and when the capitalist AI takes over the economy, it doesn't end well. In my Peru game, that happened, and my industrial score went from 297 to 34 in less than a year, and my all-together rank went from 12th place, a secondary power, to 23rd, making me not fulfill my goal of being at least a secondary power when 1936 came around.

That only happens if your economy runs on industrial subsidies. An inefficient industry crashes because it wasn't making money.
You can only somewhat mitigate it with negative tariffs, if you can afford it.
Basically, in-game, you should be growing a natural economy until, like, 1920, in which case you can try to artificially boost your economy with subsidies to make the industry score rise, delaying government bankrupcy and an economic crash until after the game ends.
Of course, doing so as Peru is going to be difficult in any case.

Oh yeah, Bo and his crew constantly break the economy with little understanding of what they are doing wrong. They think that unemployment is a grave sin that must be fixed at any cost (which, at low numbers, it isn't, even in Victoria 2, let alone the real world).
Look at Bo's previous V2 video, "The Economic Crisis". 1:23 - why does France have a level 26 ammunition factory in 1877? It's hemorrhaging -120 pounds a day. Bo called out his other factory, a level 6 steel factory, making -36 pounds a day. Likewise, you can see at 2:50 in that video that Bo is running a level 5 ammo factory that lacks sulphur, two level 4 regular clothes factories that lack fabric, three level 4 explosives factories running at basically a loss, two paper mills that lack lumber (of which the level 1 one seems to still be making a profit somewhat), etc... To be fair, Bo's factories seem like they were naturally placed by AI capitalists - but, in a free market, I'm highly skeptical that they would go any higher than level 1 with those profit margins (assuming they don't go flat-out bankrupt).
Subsidies, coupled with high tariffs, are good during war, since war exhaustion is a temporary malus that kills factory throughput. You're better off just putting up negative tariffs to boost your factories' and artisans' productive output at the expense of your populace's needs being fulfilled due to high taxation. -25% is the lowest tariffs can go in a protectionist (non-liberal) government.
Seriously, Bo's group have a very Soviet understanding of the economy. I constantly compare their industry crashes to that of Russia's in 1992.

@@RK-cj4oc Not really. I think I just read some Reddit threads, as well as personally observed how it all works during gameplay.
I'll just note some caveats in my understanding of the game's economy:
1) Whatever I've just said only works for the majors which still have proper access to raw materials (something which the guys artificially deprived themselves of in the "The Economic Crisis" video). Everything I've said doesn't really apply when playing minors, since they lose access to goods due to Great Powers buying everything up much sooner;
2) As much as I riff on Bo and co., the game's in-game AI is even worse in this regard; They'll gladly end up storing up to about 30 million pounds in their bank accounts without using them, subsidizing all their factories at high taxes all willy-nilly;
3) I'll admit that I've never really worried too much about keeping a functioning war economy for a potential Great War (especially in a multiplayer match). They're probably hemorrhaging money and economic stability for the sake of the war factories being able to produce enough goods during a Great War. Unrealistic on the game design perspective - IRL most countries would just mobilize the economy for war, converting civilian factories to military (ala HoI4), but Vic 2 doesn't have that option, so you as a player are left subsidizing oversized military factories in peace-time.
Nonetheless, absent massive war exhaustion, economic disruption due to an ongoing Great War (which disrupts even non-participant economies), or a hike in tariffs, going into Lassez-Faire with an unsubsidized economy shouldn't hurt it whatsoever.
