- Video Games in the 1970's were in their infancy, Nolan Bushnell who was the Co-founder of Atari and one of the creators of the game PONG, was seeing the advancement of of Video Games. These advancements in video games and Bushnell's love for The Walt Disney Company's Themed Entertainment and animatronics pushed him to move forward with his idea for a Family-friendly place where kids can go play arcade games, win tickets for prizes and eat pizza and on May 17, 1977 Chuck E Cheese's Pizza Time Theater was born.

Ahoyhoy There, Fellow TH-camrino! I remember this kind cashier man at the prize counter at Chuck's Place let me have a prize with like 100 tickets left but it was time to leave the Arcade. It was so sweet because the prize I wanted was a Sandile Pokemon action figure and the Arcade I was at was because I was in Sacremento cause my older sibling had a misdiagnosis and almost died so he was helicoptered to a well funded hospital. I of course was scared for my brother but missed my pets back home so much that I was trying to win that Sandile who resembled my pet Alligator Lizard, Francis, at the time. A very noble Cashier at Chuck-E-cheese when me and my folks took a break from all the gloom and sadness at the hotel we stayed at heard of the kid (Me) who just wanted to have some comfort from a piece of plastic that resembled one of my beloved pets back home. He didn't know how rough me and my folks were having it, and even still, out of the kindness of his heart, when mom said it was time to leave and the man overheard why I wanted to win the toy figure but hadn't nearly enough tickets, he reached for the little toy and accepted the little amount of tickets I I had and gave me the prize. I no longer have it but I have much more, first of all, i have my brother, who had been through a lot, died for a while, they had to use lots of skin grafts and blood from many generous donors, he lost some of his brain function, but is doing almost as well as you or I, I have my current pets, A Rat named Bartok, a New Zealand Rabbit named Azaria, a Dog named Kasey, a fish named Blinkey, 3 cats and 2 Alligator Lizards, and the memory of the noble thing that nice cashier did.

Aaron Fechter, who created The Rock Afire Explosion that performed at Showbiz, has an official youtube channel called Therockafire where you can see the band perform some old and occasionally new songs, as well as see a lot of cool behind the scenes stuff!
I think it should be noted that the CEC animatronics really haven’t been updated since the late 90’s early 2000’a and the company has begun removing them from stores.

Show Biz Pizza was SO much better, before the merger, with Chuck E Cheese.
Yeah, I only recall going to ShowBiz, not so much Chuck E Cheese, though I know Chuck E Cheese took over all the ShowBiz's. I don't recall much of Chuck E Cheese. The animatronic characters of ShowBiz however, are stapled in my memory forever!

Let's be real here.... Chuck E Cheese's characters DON'T deserve to be thought of as "more marketable", it was just coincidence that got them more popular than Showbiz. I barely even know these characters but I can still tell they're more likable. Look at Fatz the gorilla at the keyboard. What does Chuck E Cheese have? A PIZZA CHEF at the drums? Some purple guy? All of Showbiz's characters and their performances are so much better.
That part of this video isn't accurate. They did not go with the Chuck E. Cheese characters because they were more "marketable."
The copyright to the Rock-afire Explosion was (and still is) owned by the creator of the animatronic band, Aaron Fechter. He had a partnership with Showbiz Pizza in which he provided the band, created the shows, etc. for it. But it was all a licensing deal on Showbiz's end. They didn't own the characters outright.
After Showbiz bought out Chuck E. Cheese and they were looking to cut costs, unify the two brands, and wanted to eliminate the ongoing licensing fee, the company gave Aaron Fechter an ultimatum - either give the Showbiz company the full rights and ownership of the characters outright so that they would "live on" (and with no money being offered to Aaron for those rights), or they will just replace them all with Chuck E. Cheese characters. The rest is history.
It also makes a lot of sense now lol considering that Rock a Fire is what they wanted the rights to, I did research primarily from the Chuck E Cheese Wikis and blogs so I think maybe they had a bias, may work on a stand alone mini episode if there’s enough info I missed to fit into another video.
@@DannyBoyTV If you can find a way to watch it, check out the documentary "The Rock-afire Explosion." It came out back in 2008. It was all about Showbiz Pizza, the fans of it, and what happened to it and the characters.
I have the DVD of it, but I think that is long out of print. It may be available digitally somewhere.

It's funny that in nearly everything, mice are nice and rats are mean.
Kind of sad that you never mentioned Aaron Fecther leaving Showbiz after they merged with Chuck e Cheese or Aaron Fechter in general. He invented Whack a Mole and went on the create the The Wolf Pack 5, Rock afire Explosion and more. He still owns a fully functional, mint condition Rock afire Explosion band.
Yeah, and the whole reason that they went with the Chuck E Cheese characters instead of the Rock-afire characters was because Aaron Fechter owned the rights to the Rock-afire explosion and was licensing them to Showbiz Pizza. The company wanted to cut out that licensing expense, so they basically told Aaron to either give them the rights for the Rock-afire characters (apparently for no money) so that they would live on, or if not, they would just go with the Chuck E. Cheese characters that they owned entirely.
That's a pretty major part of the history of these companies that is omitted from this video.

Aaron Fecther's Rock- afire is 10000x better.They move lifelike /Chuck E cheese they move like robots.
And now the former band has been replaced with a cheap puppet show and a dollar store dance pad. It's merciful compared to the disrepair that they often are falling in.

@@CrystalLake_Slasherr The real reason they got replaced is the cec company was bought by showbiz. They operated both brands separately at first but eventually replaced the rockafire explosion because aaron fechter, their creator, didn't want to give up creative control over the band.

Once Queenie was replaced in the Wolf Pack 5 there was a mouse interpretation of her named Mini (or Minnie either one), once the wolf pack 5 was over and the RAE was a thing then Mitzi came into the Showbiz franchise. So there was in fact a Mini mozzarella before there was Mitzi Mozzarella.

The showbiz animatronics are way more realistic in my opinion... they still hold up today where even modern Chuck e cheese animatronics has 1 mouth movement open and closed. Two spin motion left and right and a few others whereas show biz has 2 mouth movements open, closed and half open and has 4 spins, left 1, left 2, right 1, right 2.
Like this video a lot! Lots of channels like Defunctland only really barely touch on stuff like this. And I love hearing how businesses grow and change. Makes me miss stuff I was never alive for
Defunct land is a huge part of me getting into this type of content, Brightsunfilms as well, I love history and nostalgia and I think so many huge iconic companies have such rich history that’s rarely talked about, That’s why I do!
DannyBoyTV - Where do you find information on stuff like this? Like it’s easy to find old commercials but knowing stuff like development, or such where do you find that?
There’s a lot of blogs that have great information, they have excerpts from News papers, books, interviews and more. But I’d say that and Wiki Pedia, I do verify the information from there tho I know it can be misleading at times so I double check but you’d be surprised, there’s information rich blogs on almost everything ever made lol

Great video :) To me, Chuck E Cheese and Showbiz Pizza Place are at their best in the 80's- early 90's. The new Chuck E Cheese nowadays is pretty good, but not as great as the prime era of CEC and SPP. The 80's CEC: PTT and SPP has waaayyy better animatronic shows(Pizza Time Players and the Rock afire Explosion are very fun and really great animatronic shows, even to this day), has more Arcade games rather than simple ticket gambling games, and has a much more family-friendly Pizza Arcade/restaurant environment rather than a kids casino environment that CEC nowadays establish. Based on watching the Rock afire Explosion and Pizza Time Players shows, and looking through history of both chains, I get more of the impression that back then, these two chains have this great charm that appeal kids, teens, and adults alike, which the new CEC sadly lacks. Ever since CEC has gone a new direction, and rebrand Showbiz Pizza to replace the Rock afire Explosion, the CEC/Showbiz chain honestly got a spiral down hill from there. The Rock afire Explosion is the best animatronic band of all time and its the only Creative Engineering show that marks its history of a great long lasting franchise. The fact we don't have the Rock afire Explosion:The Magmus Opus animatronic show(Invented the best animatronic company outside of Disney) anymore in these Pizza Arcade chains and the CEC animatronic shows are not as great as its prime(Late 70's-90's) and instead turn into a Sesame Street puppet knock-off show, makes me wish I go to a time machine back in the 80's to experience the real Chuck E Cheese and Showbiz Pizza Place. Modern Chuck E Cheese is not bad, there's still fun to be had, but CEC and SPP has seen better days, that's where I'm getting at :) Anyways, thanks for this video, I always enjoy the history of these chains since I'm a huge fan of both old-school Chuck E Cheese and the Rock afire Explosion :)

This used to be so wonderful back in the 90’s. I personally noticed when they got rid of the show and it wasn’t the same for me. I personally only went for the show lol. They really started to slip in the early 2000’s. I don’t even recognize it now anymore. They have basically ditched the animatronics and have like a dance floor type thing. The new graphics based mouse kills me but I’m sure it goes over will with the little kids. I miss the times when this was animatronic and things were simpler. *hard sigh*
90s kids can be toxic when they refuse to grow up.
Also, the dance floor didn’t really begin til the late 2010s/early 2020s; so the 2000s/early 2010s shows weren’t bad.

Chuck-E-Cheese it was a lot better in the 70s compared to today's Chuck-E-Cheese it had more animatronic characters such as the king ShowBiz Pizza also put a lot of magic into their animatronics there were a lot more props for the stage show I still think ShowBiz Pizza is better than the old Chuck-E-Cheese

My town had Showbiz before they went belly up. It eventually reopened as Chuck E Cheese, but never seemed to recapture the magic. Something else happened near about that '84-'86 timeframe... Godfathers pizza changed something. For my town, Showbiz was similar to Godfather's, and both were actually pretty good for chain pizza. Good memories there.

So how was the pizza during the '70s and '80s? Apparently, Studio C could end up causing CEC to ditch animatronics altogether. I hope that doesn't happen. With the advent of 3D printing, making animatronic components should be pretty cost-effective, at least in theory. It's unfortunate that Showbiz and CEC couldn't have coexisted to this day. At the same time, if the Rockafire Explosion were still around then what happened to Chuck would likely happen to them.

The Rock Afire Explosion is still around, kinda. Aaron Fechter, their creator, has a working show and a youtube channel called Therockafire where you can see cool behind the scenes stuff and see them perform some old and (occasionally) new songs.

He will be moving at some point, and I'm not sure which of his creations he can take with him, but in the meantime, we can still enjoy his creations somewhere.

Showbiz was better,hands down. I'm bias, I married Mitzi in 1984. My brother and I both got to play Billy Bob at the Charlotte,N.C. Showbiz in the mid1980's

As a child my favorite was Chucky Cheese, I thought they had the best Pizza and Galaxian was my fave.
I actually liked the pizza. Although it didnt look the best, it tasted fresh to me. Maybe alot of people have bad immune systems. Also, my favorite game Is a game with a fish wearing a suit, and you have to drop a ball in a slot that gives you an amount of tickets. Dont know the name though

Probably for the same reason every thing in the 70s and 80s had a jingle, it’s generational marketing, gotta appeal to the kids lol
