The boys were in fantastic shape.Plant was wailing and screaming his pain, while Jimmy Page was sublime on the guitar.

Light and shade. That was Jimmy's goal for Zeppelin's music and they nailed it right from the jump. This song was the genesis for what Zeppelin would become.
    From Rolling Stone magazine :
"Page invited Plant to his boathouse on the Thames, and they spent the afternoon talking about music and playing records. In a serendipitous moment, they put on Joan Baez’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You,” and excitedly talked about how they could rearrange the song and blow it out."

Harri, this song, like several of Zeppelin's earliest songs, were significantly changed covers. Usually of old Blues numbers. But this one was written by Anne Bredon about a decade before Zep did it, and her lyrics were just as contradictory as Zeppelin's similar, but greatly expanded lyrics. Here's the way I look at the Zep song--which, btw, I rank among their Top 5. The singer is in love with a girl, but his wanderlust is overtaking him (as well as his wish to ultimately return home). He's young, and wants to ramble, needs to ramble. Yet at the same time, she's hot, and a part of him can envision settling down with her and walking through the park every day. He's torn. And I think the lyrics in the song are his inner dialogue about his ambivalent feelings on the matter, not that that he's actually voicing them to her. He's still sorting out his mixed feelings in preparation for the big talk with her. In the end of his inner dialog--at least this round of it--he concludes, "but nowwwww, I've got to go awayyyyy!", as he can hear the voices calling him back home (which I'm assuming is the ultimate destination after some rambling on the way).
Next up from Zeppelin, please react to the studio version of, "Hey, Hey What Can I Do", a charming song about Robert's attempts at coping with the fact that he's fallen in love with and dating a prostitute. lol Awesome song, one of Zep's best!

I remember when Led Zeppelin were unknown, and this album was brand new and my big brother brought a copy home. The first Led Zeppelin song we ever heard was "Good Times, Bad Times", a great rocker. And then this dark, moody, emotional, and very unusual song was the second one. I don't think the exact meaning of the lyrics is important, just Robert Plant's vocal performance as he agonizes his way through them.

  • @jeannettesimpson9778

Early Led Zeppelin would always be on my desert island disc set list. As a 16 year-old this band had everything I could ever want in music. I never found the lyrics confusing. There are many songs about a guy loving someone but having to leave. Just remember Lynyrd Skynyrd and "Freebird".

Certified Zep head here. The look of ecstacy on your face while listening says it all, and it's the same look that I have every time that I'm listening to Zep even after hearing the sings a thousand times! My take on it is that he is torn between the love of his woman and the love of touring. Jimmy Page's playing takes me to places that don't exist on this planet, and each of the four are amazing artists in their own right. I should stop now because I could go on forever about my love for them, hehe! The song that I would suggest is "Since I've Been Loving You" because it exudes pure passion from all four members.

The bridge with the sound of the air raid shelter horn is a clue to the meaning of the song, I reckon: He's telling his woman he loves her, but he must leave, because he's being called into battle, into war - and then he reassures her that he'll be back, that they'll be "walking in the park", etc. Any which way, it's an EPIC tune; heartbreaking, beautiful and incredible when you think that Plant was barely 20 when he sang this song. WOW!

  • @patches6309
    @patches6309 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The song is about a man who is a "Rambler" at heart & is trying hard to stay with a woman he loves but can not fight the never ending longing to run "back home" (ie: "run free"). Great pickup on the spanish Flamenco styled acoustic guitar style which was heavily influential to Jimmy Page at the time. He went and obtained a heavy strung Gibson J-200 for this particular track. Great reaction, keep going down the Zep rabbit hole. So many incredible songs by the GOAT of all Rock bands. Check out songs like Kashmir, In the Evening, Immigrant Song, The Rover & Over the Hills & Far Away and you will get just a taste of how incredible this rabbit hole is? This to me is about touring. Bands back then travelled on the road and for long periods of time. It took them away from their families for a long time. The acoustic guitar in this song gives me a bittersweet vibe. He has to leave but doesn't really want to. As with Rush's song YYZ. That is the code for the Toronto Airport and when they saw those letters on their baggage they were happy because they were heading home.

What a great LP and song! Cover or not doesn't matter. Most bands have done covers at one time or another. Lyrically it is about love and life. Sometimes you leave on your own other times you get called away (draft) It's the conflict of emotions driving the song. Harri, it's fun watching you experience so, so many songs I've known for 40-60 years. I remember having to listen to some songs a dozen times before i , and others, could know what the lyrics were. Many times the LP cover didn't print them and no Google to search them. It was part of the process that created a sense of ownership for us on particular songs and LPs. Now I can sing the lyrics to certain songs without even thinking about them. If you can't figure out what a song means then you accept that the writer us to interpret the song as we see/ hear it for ourselves. Great job sir!

This song was originally written by Anne Bredon and was apparently written when she was thinking of leaving her husband. Here's her original version th-cam.com/video/A9VpWAEk6aI/w-d-xo.html Janet Smith learned it from Anne Bredon and sang a version. Joan Baez heard it from Janet Smith and sang a version and Led Zeppelin heard Joan Baez's version and then created their own. By the time LZ heard it, Anne Bredon's connection to it was unknown. Joan Baez had recorded it as 'trad'. In other words as author unknown. To me it's just a person with itchy feet who can't stay in one place for long. He can't settle down. The 2 musical styles seem to represent the conflict of emotions.

Cosmo mentioned the fact that this was a cover in an earlier comment. I believe the first artist to record it was Joan Baez, and there is a great version of her playing her version of this song live in a 1962 concert. It's a great listen if just to get an idea how Led Zeppelin could hear a song and completely reinterpret it. Another song that was a "long-distance" cover was "When the Levee Breaks." This song was written by an American husband-and-wife blues duo named Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy. They wrote the song about the great 1927 flood on the Mississippi Delta in the era before hurricanes were named storms. That may have been the same hurricane that inspired Zora Neale Hurston's novel _Their Eyes Were Watching God_ . Again, you can find a version of Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy playing their version of "When The Levee Breaks" and it would be amazing to compare that to the Led Zeppelin version of the song.

There is another situation that involves a "leaving" where both parties of the relationship have to leave each other, regardless of the good feelings or the happiness that the other person has brought. Looking forward to an unspecified time in the future when the relationship can be restarted or continued, does not make the "leaving" optional. I am talking about the death of the other person. The only way you can avoid this type of "leaving" is to not have such a relationship, which is worse than the "leaving".

For a totally different Led Zeppelin listen to Tangerine from Led Zeppelin III or No Quarter from Houses of the Holy...those will really show you the depth of Led Zeppelin...but then Physical Graffiti could do that too if you take time to listen to the whole album (4 sides on vinyl).

I absolutely LOVE this rendition of this beautiful song. And love your reaction, too. Interesting aside - the chord breakdown in this song is nearly identical to the chord breakdowns in “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by The Beatles and “25 or 6 to 4” by Chicago. Once you realize it you’ll never be able to unhear it!

This is my 3rd favorite by them, right after "Houses of the Holy" and "Zoso". This was fresh and bluesy, I think II and III are overrated and "Physical Graffiti" has some filler. This song is a particular favorite. Love the changes, the acoustic guitar and atmospheric singing it opens with, the quick build-up and the descent. Still my favorite rock band is The Who, Townshend was a better songwriter and the other guys were the equal of Zep's players & singer though Page was a better guitarist. I'll swap that for depth of songs any day.

@@sourisvoleur4854 Bredon wrote the song but never recorded it. She played it live over the radio, Baez heard her performance and covered it; Hence, a cover of a song first recorded by Baez. In other words, Baez was the first to record the song. Also, LZ decided to cover the song after hearing the Baez recording of it.

The song is confusing.. The song was written i believe in 1958 or 59.. First sung by Joan Baez in the early 60'S. The song was about a soldier that is called back to war..He has to leave her, but he doesn't want to go.. At the end he returns.. LOL Still confusing... but i didnt write it.LOL

Joan Baez didn't write this song. It was written by a woman called Anne Bredon when she was thinking of leaving her husband. It is not about a soldier leaving for war. I think it's about the urge to ramble. It's about someone who can't settle in one place. Here's the original by Anne Bredon th-cam.com/video/A9VpWAEk6aI/w-d-xo.html
