Led Zeppelin are the best because they have all the components needed for a perfect rock band, each of the band members is brilliant on their instrument, Robert has a perfect voice, the songs are receptive, the band didn’t stick to one style of music, they were open to experiments, the lyrics are very high quality and sometimes very poetic. It's all a recipe for GOAT.

Few are the songs where it's not just OK, but actually required, to react to both the live and the studio versions. This song is one of the few, the proud, the legendary.

Listen to Dazed and Confused, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Whole Lotta Love (their first big hit in the mainstream market), Stairway To Heaven, a rock classic & probably their most well known song. Listen to the original studio version first, then a live version, then the Heart version on an evening honoring the band.

GREATEST ROCK SONG EVER RECORDED! Harri, I'm SO glad you came back to do the studio version. IMO, the studio version is the best version for 95% of songs, so I always recommend reactors do the studio version first, then live, and then any covers if worthy ones exist. Now, when you react to the studio version of, "Whole Lotta Love", do NOT use the Official Music Video!!! I cannot emphasize this strongly enough!!! The reason is because they (someone) inexplicably cut out FORTY-FOUR seconds from the song's psychedelic bridge! And what's so effed up about that is that it's the Official Music Video, posted by the official Led Zeppelin TH-cam channel. WTF?! lol I don't understand it, for the life of me. But, no worries, all you need to do is select a different link of the studio version. I'll post a good one here for you. But in case it doesn't show up for you, just remember this: the studio version of the song is 5 1/2 minutes long, and so whatever link you choose, make sure that is the running time, give or take a couple seconds. Here's the best link, IMO:
"Whole Lotta Love", studio version, remastered: th-cam.com/video/oaSk5vnAVJ8/w-d-xo.html

John Paul Jones, actually played the ''Orchestral" sounds on a early keyboard (sampler) called a ''Mellotron''. Pressing a key, made the tape move & contact the head, It played until the ribbon of tape ran out, or the key was let up, then a weight pulled it back to the start. Each tape had three tracks (recorded sounds) - tricky to play live.

Robert Plants voice, so powerful and unique. Jimmy Pages guitar work, simply superb. John Paul Jones bass, so special and underrated. Bonzo's beat, with the splits, fills changes in tempo and rhythm. I don't think any other drummer could have matched John Bonham! The complexity of Zeppelin put them way ahead of their time.

Hello from Chicago! I quite enjoy your reactions...and this is no exception! You hit it spot on: the live version has an energy and intensity that there "ain't no denyin'". But what I love about the studio version is that it's so perfectly produced. You hear everything so clearly. You hear the raw, relentless drive of Bonzo's drumming, you hear the building passion of Robert's voice, the steady groove of Jimmy Page's guitar, Jonesy's impeccable arrangements of synthesizers, Mellotron, orchestras, violins and brass. You can't get much better than this. If you want an excellent live version, you should hear the live performance of this song that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page performed on MTV in the 90's on Unplugged, or as they retitled it, MTV Unledded--they performed it with an Egyptian and a Moroccan orchestra, it brings me to tears every time!

The 2 most popular live versions are both great and it's always fantastic to see such charismatic and talented performers/musicians performing live but some things are missed in those performances. Most notably, JPJ's Middle-Eastern organ passages are somewhat lost, whilst in the studio version they're clear as day and really elevate the song. I didn't notice the studio version being significantly slower either, or Plant's studio vocal being any less impassioned. Perhaps it's because you heard the live version first? I'm not sure. I'll have to go and check them out again. I've seen/heard the live versions untold times... but any excuse! ;) :)

This is by far my favorite from Zepplin. Far superior to the rest of their catalog. Many people prefer "Stairway", which is good, but this one has held my imagination since I was 12. The problem I have had with LZ, is that Jimmy Page never seemed to play the song the same way twice - not that he couldn't, he just always was improvising. So, after hearing the studio version on your album or radio then you hear the live version, it would be different. Not bad, just different than you expected. John Bohnam would also improvise somewhat too - actually I think they all did to a degree. Sometime it almost sounded like a different song - but not quite - you would always know what they were playing. I guess, the studio versions spoiled me and then the live version always left we feeling like I missed something - with exception of course. So don't everyone come at me and say - you have to hear this version from this concert. I am just speaking in general. So, in GENERAL, I prefere the studio versions. An exception I can think of would be John Bohnam's Moby Dick, and there are others too - jmho.

I agree, the large majority of Led Zeppelin's magic happened in the studio. Live they were hit or miss for myriad reasons: drugs/alcohol (mostly affecting Page), Plant's throat surgeries, and the fact that Jimmy layered guitar tracks in the studio that he, as one man, couldn't possibly replicate live...even with a double-neck guitar. But when they hit on all cylinders, Holy Moly! Plant said it best in a Charlie Rose interview a few years back, about their live performances: "Some nights we were shit. But some nights....some nights, we were the greatest thing to ever walk across that stage."

I have exactly the opposite feeling. I've never wanted to go to a concert so I could hear album perfect replays of a band's repertoire. The fact they never played any song the same way twice (I'm speculating here) is what I find most interesting about Zeppelin. If I wanted to hear the album version, I've already got that at home.

you should ALWAYS listen to the studio version first...no matter the band/song. its how they meant the song to be heard. afterwards, then listen to a live version if the song moves ya to do so. because live...it doesn't always sound as good...and at other times, live versions will have extra stuff added. but, you wont know that unless you hear the studio version first. please, listen to the entire Led Zepplin IV album....starting with Misty Mountain Hop. then listen to The Four Non-Blondes cover of Misty Mountain Hop. they'll blow your mind how well they did

I am not crazy about this song. Did you wear that shirt just for me to see your he-man muscles. Yes you are handsome, put together with great hair and beard-mustach combo, yes. Hope you don't mind me saying stuff, no insult intended, I just like to look at handsome men.

When I saw this band, this song was one of the very few highlights. I have to admit that they were a huge disappointment to me as a live band. But, this song just rolls off the stage & right over you.
Ten Years Gone should be on your list. And Gallows Pole....
