Ripmo AF - Ridden and Reviewed

  • Not just an alloy Ripmo
    You might think to yourself “oh, an alloy Ripmo? Big whoop.” But this is not simply an alloy frame Ripmo - it is a huckster’s Ripmo. Enduro athletes can rejoice - Ibis has slackened the headtube out by a full degree (64.9 vs 65.9 on the carbon model), and revamped the DW-link suspension to be more progressive. If you ride like a jack-rabbit, popping and skipping off of every bump in the trail, you can run an air shock and preload the bike at a moment’s notice. If you tend to pick your line and plow through any obstacles in your path, the AF is coil compatible. That’s right, you can now get all the small bump benefits from a coil shock on your Ripmo AF.

    You guys are downplaying the suspension on these by a lot. The diamond d1 and topaz go toe to toe with the RockShox and fox top of line all day long. After owning a sapphire I won't be going back to fox or rs for the foreseeable future. Make no mistake you are getting top of the line suspension with this bike.

    Its soooo sick to see the big boys making some cheaper options on badass bikes. Along with the YT 100% Carbon Free....I am really hoping this becomes a trend in the industry. Carbon is overrated, pollutes and costs way too much; environmentally and financially. Good on you Ibis...stoked!

    Gotta Ripmo AF frame. Installed Sun Ringle Duroc 35 wheels, A Durolux-36 fork(yes! a Suntour fork), Deore 11-speed(I'm not wealthy weekend rider). And a DVO Jade coil. With 260 pounds in the saddle, the Ripmo, rides like a Cadillac SUV. Little heavy, but very comfortable. Won't do any Enduro"stunt," riding with it. Can't afford that, and my bodyweight has bad results on today's thinly-built wheels. Going up, on steep inclines(roads), is smooth and enjoyable. Not as fast as a trail rig or hardtail, but the reason I bought it was for support & mild comfort on long work commutes of twenty miles per day. My spine...loves-it.

      -The SB150 didn’t climbed as well as the Ripmo’s and nearly impossible to get an affordable deal.
      -The Ripmo Carbon felt lighter and faster.
      -The Ripmo AF blew my mind in terms of cost vs performance.

    I'm about to buy a new bike. Was actually gonna buy my friend's 2018 Santa Cruz Hightower C. For $2400. This bike has kind of overturned my reasoning on this purchase. I probably wont have a chance to demo the Ripmo AF beforehand, but I'm thinking about just placing an order. These decisions are hard, because I do feel really comfortable on the Hightower, but this seems like so much more bike for not much more than a 2 year old Santa Cruz.

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I owned a Hightower. It is a good bike, but there was something about how the suspension behaved that I never really gelled with. It just felt boring. The Ripmo is more lively feeling.

      @@FanatikBikeCo I ended up ordering the Ripmo AF. I spec'd it out with carbon wheels and bars. Also did it with an SLX build. Kind of blew the whole budget bike theme out of the water, but those are the areas where I wanted to spend the money. The geometry and the DVO suspension where what I mainly wanted out of the AF.

    • @TheStabbyCyclist
      @TheStabbyCyclist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably because the effort went into what really matters. Yeah, it's nice to have a nifty paint scheme but let's be real, does frame color matter when it's between your legs and pointed down the trail? That said, I personally love raw frames.

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @FanatikBikeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sandra, sorry for the late response. I think a large with a short stem will have you set up how is sort of intended on this bike. It sounds like you've compared the geo of the two bikes, and if your goal is to replicate the feeling as much as you can, than a medium would be a better option, but I think you should consider the large as well.

    Intense has some high end full carbon bikes for less. I got the NX Tracer and it's perfect. I have only upgraded the rear shock to a Fox X2 but the fork and wheel specs are amazing for the price. Even the Race Face Ar30 offset rims are tanks and I've hucked to flat onto jagged granite rocks and they don't even get scratched.

And all these comments on a bike that has a carbon frame but entreylevel components for like half the price of a kidney (specialized and trek) for 6-7k i get a rockshox select and a zeb select. for half the price i get on ohter bikes (cube one 77, radon swoop) a zeb ultimate or a fox 38 kashima. And saying that the frame is the special thing, please, there are limits. I just dislike hearing that a 3k bike with NX drivetrain or a 6-7k bike with rockshox select or fox performance is a good deal. I think its not.

      So when we made this video in 2019 the RipMo AF was originally priced at $3000. Since that time there have been changes to the spec and pricing. So yes you are correct when you say it is now $3899. At the time it was $3000 and a slightly different build spec. Hope that clears it up for you!
