  • The fight Rick Roufus (USA) vs Changpuek Kietsongrit (THA).
Until the 80s, for people who had never visited Thailand, Muay Thai was a completely unknown martial art. While in Brazil Jiu-Jitsu developed and, according to residents, claimed to be the best battle system in the world. In America, it was believed that kickboxing and karate have no equal...

Obviously Thai kb is superior because they are allowed so many more moves / weapons.
How can kb compete with a style that allows kb + much more?
Of course thai kb is more effective.
It was a stupid debate & foolish of the champ to think kb can compete with kb + a lot more weapons (or even 1 more)
Now the question shoulda been -
"Can thai kickboxing style compete with kb if they have to follow all kb rules?"

You're forgetting Rick had like 50 lbs on the dude... gigantic size differences have always been typical for Thais fighting non-Thais. Another great example is Nokweed Davy vs. Jerome Le Banner. Many argue that had that fight gone longer, there's a good chance Davy would have won. Oh and that initial knockdown in the first round broke Chanpuek's jaw, dude's tough as nails.

  • @cleanslate2004

This was actually kinda funny. Hats off to the Muay Tai guy. I once boxed a guy who knew both boxing & karate. He always beat me when we boxed, but when he used Karate & I boxed, I just punched him in the foot & it was over. What ever the deciplines used the advantage will almost always go to the guy who is best at misdirection & balancing offense with defense, strength with agility, exploiting weaknesses & knowing their strengths. Mai Tau makes sense to me tho. They take the legs out from a distance & if you can avoid that, they can elbow & knee you from many angles inside. It just seems that they cover all bases, by using their entire body & leveraging everything to the fullest. I like Ju Jitzu too because of the focus on balance & leveraging. There's alot to be said for a solid grappler to. There's not much ya can do if they can tie you up in a choke or arm bar. My bros. Greaser friends picked a fight with a college wrestling coach decades ago. They were all sizes, big & small, boxers, street fighters & a few off duty cops. The wrestler was an average size & smaller than most of them. They fought one at a time & he put them all to sleep without hurting anything but their pride.

You may also not know how Rufus and the US 'experts' had disparaged Kietsongrit prior to the fight. By the way it is difficult for a farang to become a champion in Thailand because there are very few who can stay the course. I have had the pleasure of meeting both Kietsongrit and Ramon Dekkers and both were easily capable of beating Rufus. The reason people insult Americans is simple, they see through the arrogance of the 'Murica' crowd.

I am very happy to be able to watch stand-up martial arts and kickboxing matches from the late 1980s on TH-cam. Thanks to internetworking! ! As far as I see this match, it's called Muay Thai and kickboxing, but looking at Rick Roufus' fighting style and appearance, it looks like a European Savate without low kicks. Chiangpuet Kiangsongrit, on the other hand, is good at low kicks in upright, typical Muay Thai style. Therefore, if you don't have a low kick defense, you will end up with this result.

It also takes a lot of training to condition your legs to essentially becoming baseball bats like Muay Thai does. Duke tried to lessen Chang's skills while not acknowledging Chang was fighting under rules that eliminated about 75% of the arsenal he trains to fight with.

@@slayermill8621 Yes. I'm familiar with the constraints the Thai fighter was fighting under. No elbows, no throws, no knees, etc. Duke asserted low kicks were "worthless" and was out to prove Karate was superior to Muay Thai. He learned the lesson the hard way and got his legs damaged. As I remember they carried Rufus out on a stretcher. Then as I remember Benny "The Jet" Urquidez took on the Thai fighters and showed them how effective boxing combined with karate was. Leg kicking, especially calf kicks, are fast becoming a necessary tool in an MMA fighter's tools kit as Izzy, Justin and Dustin have show just how effective attacks on the leg can be.

It doesnt take a lot training to be able to deal with low kicks effectively. In this particular fight Rick had 3 massive advantages - He have shoes - oponent is barefoot, he have pants - oponent only short pants, and Rick have longer arm reach. Long pants offers HUGE shock absorbtion and we dont know how much padding or how thick they are. 3 huge advantages which simply will shred the M Thai fighter. But Rick make 3 stupid mistakes. 1. Jumps too much at one place. This makes you slower than turtle. Your job must be to move sideways and forward. Not up n' down. 2. Longer arm reach means you can hit oponent face each and every time when he makes low kick attempt. 3. Stick only to boxing. Only hands. Use your gloves to hit oponent elbows, knees etc. Punch the low kicks.

The fact is Rick is one of the world's greatest kickboxers.
This was his first defeat. He went over 60w with only that one loss.
Ricks professional career spanned over three decades!
Look at who he defeated - Kaman twice, Hoost 1 out of 2 times.
Those are just a couple of the greats. Research his record.
Would any of you say that those guys are even bigger bums or losers because they were defeated by Roufus? I think not.

The weakness of kicks, just like any other attack, is that the power comes from the distance traveled. Any attack can be defeated not by avoiding it, but by getting inside its effective range. A kick is useless if it cant transfer all of its kinetic energy. The same goes for a punch. The power comes at full extension. Not half. This is why Ju-Jitsu is arguably the best martial art. It is also why it was incorporated into what we now call MMA. Which MMA is just kickboxing combined with Ju-Jitsu.

If this happened under Thai rules, Roofus would have been obliterated. I live in Milwaukee and have been to a couple classes taught by Duke Roofus, so I have a ton of respect for Duke and his father. But the rules here are the biggest factor in this fight, even more than either man's skill set.

Actualy rules has to be mixed. After all is kickboxing vs M Thai. Kickboxer must stay under kickboxing rules, M Thai Fighter under M Thai rules. Which means kickboxer must use only kickboxing - strikes and kicks only without low kicks, elbows, etc.
M Thai fighter can use all M Thai elbows, knees, throws etc. Still kick boxer have 3 massive advantages but made 3 HUGE mistakes during that match. He could win over the M Thai fighter if was not so stupid. Stupid mistakes.
      So 3 massive advantages
+ Longer hands. That is advantage that is massive. He can smash the skull of the oponent. Yet oponent cant reach him.
+ Wearing pants is advantage which greatly reduces damage of low kicks and make shock absorbtion. Especially if are thick and have padding under. Oponennt doesnt have.
+ Having shoes which you can kick with. Oponent is barefoot.
Those 3 massive advantages make every serious boxer/kickboxer to shred to pieces M Thai or any kind of nude barefoot fighter. Regardless of how will act the oponent fighter.
But Rick made 3 Huge mistakes which cost him the fight. Mistakes which no serious fighter will not make in his position.
