1:40 that is 10 fps. not 30. also scratch on Firefox runs at 20 FPS, meaning you're not even right. this "30 fps" version of the clip you hit isn't even comparable to Scratch with 20 FPS 3:14 it actually *renders* at a higher resolution than that (unless you're using pen, but whatever, it's fine) 4:10 I agree with this, but that's a community issue. (one that is not helped by good people not wanting to use scratch) 5:09 I hate to say, but yeah. fuck scratch when it comes to moderation.
idk where did u get the info about firefox running at 20 fps but i don't think it's true (unless u could say your source?) I use firefox, but not everybody does so it's pretty much true that it runs at whatever speed scratch runs, not being affected by browser speed.
Scratch is a stepping point for coders. I myself learned scratch when i was younger. then once i got older i made connections in new languages to scratch. this allowed me to learn better langauges a lot faster because i already used those lines in the form of blocks. (also this is a lego language made for 8-11 yr olds dont sweat it that much)
As a low level coder, scratch is fun and engaging. I've learned a lot using it. There are also a lot of programs that use drag and drop coding these days, making it an incredible starting off point for even adults. I've used scratch off and on since middle school, so 7-8 years now, and it's allowed me to start learning stuff like blender's shaders, and GoDot's engine.
1:34 we all just know that this is 24 fps, LOWER than scratch's framerate, and the "30 fps" clip is at 12 FPS. THATS WHY IT LOOKS CHOPPY, HUH. 3:31 and here you obviously used a pixelated effect to make it worse than it is.
1:30 you can only see the difference because you put the higher fps first. and then after that you show the geometry dash one on scratch and it looked perfectly fine. you know why?! because there isnt a problem with 30 fps. you exaggerating
Scratch can be good for beginner projects, but bad for advanced projects and those with a mobile device that you can’t see really good advanced projects because you can’t see it/reloads a lot and can’t play some projects.
Hence, I use Turbowarp instead. It's just a direct upgrade, AND it caters to all of my needs as a developer. > You can use spritesheets with the Clipping & Blending extension. > You can literally do OOP using JSON objects with the JSON extension. > Multiplayer becomes a cakewalk compared to Scratch when using the Numeric Encoding extension. > Lily's Toolkit has blocks which I could hardly live without in basic Scratch. > Custom blocks can return values, need I say more? I swear, Turbowarp alone is on par with other top engines, if you know how to use it.
This video misses the point of Scratch. He is trying to chastize Scratch for not being an advanced tool, but fails to read the tagline "world's largest free coding community for kids." Sure some of the design decisions might be strange, and the code block could do with some revamping, but scratch was never meant for advanced projects, or even large-scale games at all! if you look back at the first Scratch projects, you can see they were more akin to animated postcards with some gamification. The advanced things that have been made with scratch, like 3D renderers, hi-speed games, custom compilers, emulators, engines, and everything you showed in the "Scratch cant do THIS" section, were a result of an extremely dedicated offshoot of the community, who mastered the strange, somewhat arbitrary syntax of Scratch, transforming it into this pseudo-javascript thing when it was only intended for basic coding concepts. Overall this video is shiiiit. have a good day
Yeah, the stuff scratch is capable of at its full potential is incredible considering it was made for kids, but they were made by extremely dedicated people who treat scratch like a job. Maybe not griffpatch though, he still finds fun in making those hyper-advanced games
i don't get it. i feel like it would be really better if new coders weren't stuck to scratch for some time but learned unity/gamemaker or any engine really from the start.
1:29 Nice try, but this is heavily exaggerated as the video you uploaded is only in the maximum framerate of 30fps (you can't select the 60fps option in settings).
Yeah, I find it pretty dishonest. I assume this is just lackluster research, since he doesn't have much of a reason to do this, besides trying to keep viewer retention high? I'm not entirely of the reasoning behind it.
@@Randomscratchhere because the video is 24 fps, which was changed for some reason on youtube during the exporting of the video, the frame rates are messed up on all of the video clips.
I'm surprised if anyone remembers me but I used to make the update videos for Scratch Addons. I've been using the website for a very long time - most of my life! But the reason I left Scratch behind was because the team running it didn't seem to care. My main frustration is that they did everything halfway. There was some huge potential, but little work done to harness that potential. Scratch seems to have created a website for beginners that had a few advanced features, but was very slow on the uptake that people weren't just using it to learn, they were staying there. By that point, it seemed like they simply didn't care enough to maximize and ended up forcing a community that could have been thriving to die.
I would love to make more games in scratch if it didn't have some very crucial problems... 1. some startup issues(Desync or different results if double green flagged etc.) 2. layering problems 3. Clone touch detection problem... 4. Sprites going off-screen
@@bits360wastaken well it was supposed to be 60, so either something went wrong when youtube was reading the meta data for the video or in the exporting process from premiere pro to media encoder. It was unintentional
Glad i used scratch offline learning the basics and starting my journy now i'm learning blender but scratch still holds a nostalgic place in my heart but i need to do the jump of faith
Tokyo Machine and Guy Arthur go BRRRRR. In all honesty though, this was a really good video. It perfectly sums up everything that I don't like about scratch, from the unnecessary limitations to the overprotective moderation system. The main reasons why I still use scratch are because it is in browser and because I find the restrictions like a challenge to get around.
Also don't forget the sprite fencing (sprites cannot go offscreen). This makes creating a scrolling game torture. Good thing that in turbowarp and penguin mod it can be disabled and in ganci its disabled by default.
U can make sprites go off screen, just switch them to a massive costume, move them, switch them back and repeat this in a run without screen refresh custom block
i feel as there’s not much point to scratch jr, considering Scratch is already a pretty junior like program. i dont know how the developers dont notice us, trying to push scratch to its limits, but if they dont want there program to die, they need to update its possibilities. a way to do that, is put half the stuff that’s in scratch now into scratch junior, considering real scratch is pretty junior. then, they can then proceed to level up scratch
So now you're saying that scratch is dying because it is to limited and you can't get much of it with it's moderation system, but guess what, this is the point of scratch! Not trying to be mean or act like an average scratch forum nerd, but you can just use another engine other than scratch if you don't like the limitations. And yes, scratch team is not the best at moderation, and their not really good at making things clear, but Scratch is a kids' website, can you name a kids website with good moderation? I don't mean that Scratch moderation is great, but it's acceptable for a small and basic children website, and not to mention that there are thousands of projects created everday on scratch, and scratch team have less than 200 moderators, you really cant expect much out of it.. Please stop shaming scratch for not doing every single thing perfectly, just switch if you hate scratch or get a job. Again, not trying to be mean, just my opinion
Honestly , scratch was (I think) just a way to to teach kids/ beginners an easy to understand way to code so than they can slowly build up to more difficult and advanced programs, so it make sense why it has many limitations n stuff
(Edit: 1:41 i'm pretty sure that's 15fps...) While scratch may die, people will still use it and publish full-size games, just not the website, how ironic~ ☆
dawg is right i had to turn the frames down so it would be overly dramatically obvious lol edit: I thought the fps of the video was 60 fps, for some reason during exporting, youtube set the fps of the video to 24 fps instead of 60 and messed up the fps of all of the clips.
No, it's better to learn a better game engine, scratch and turbowarp has its limitations, and there are many limitations, basic engines like godot, unity, gamemaker, are much better for a beginner than scratch.

tbh as a retird scratcher, i get, i mean i worked very hard on a game for like months, and once i relesed it it got very little views, and i even used some of those "how to get on trending on scratch" videos and stuff, i tried again with another game. it also took some months and it was way better than the other one and i even did the same thing as the other one but still little views. I Used to mainly make animations, they didn't take me that much but they also floped, i only have like 3 popular animations, 2 of those where in offical scratch studios and the other one got popular because i uploaded it to youtube and it got alot of views there making people go to the scratch version, they weren't even that good (excpet the last one, but it got taken down) the actual good ones tho only got at most 50-100 views. Meanwhile There Where These Copy And Paste Platformers Getting On Trending, I Even Made A Project About That And It Got Taken Down (tbh, it was kind of naughty) that's why i moved to make animations on youtube.
Been a scratcher for 3 years. I've also realized that my projects comepletely get NO views at all. And I'm slowly losing hope on succeeding and about to retire. And besides, popular content in Scratch is just repetitive, no space for ACTUAL unique and good games, which makes me realize the sad truth, imagine the new Scratchers every day exited to be popular, only to realize that they'll be overshadowed by the repetitive content I guess I'm better off writing stories
Scratch hasn't been updated for TOO LONG and the Scratch team has rejected TOO MANY ideas that are actually helpful for expanding or even simplifying Scratch. A standard example is the ridiculous discussion regarding the () ^ () block...

Scratch would need a HUGE update to get back on track, so I’m sorry to say this, but Scratch might be done for. 😢 4:59 I WANT GANDI SO BAD NOW! 😍
from my experience of the past year, scratch moderation is reaching roblox levels, recently i got a warning for 'spamming' just because someone spam reported my comment
its because everyone is moving to Turbowarp, Penguinmod, Gandi, etc. the limits are removed, and more capabilities are added. since tw and pm are partially compatable and all tw extensions work in pm, you can do mostly anything in either of them.
I started using Scratch in 2017. I had a sidescroller shooter game that I started working on in late 2018 and had worked on for 5 years (on and off in my free time). While previously the only thing holding the game back was my laziness and poor work ethic, I noticed something when I tried to start work on a new update for it. Enemies, which utilize the clone feature to exist in larger numbers, could no longer detect projectile attacks (which I also did using the clone feature.) I tried just about everything to troubleshoot it, but due to some strange bug that I coudn't find any information on, this game was and is effectively broken. I didn't have trouble moving on from that and just starting work on new projects, but the fact that it happened made me realize just how flawed the engine is.
happily im on offline scratch but that means no multiplayer. too be honest scratch is now scratchyourwayoutofthiswebsite because OH GOD LOOK AT THAT TURBOWARPING RED T LOGO!!! To be honest im sure the scratch mods are gonna have mascots and be way more popular after scratch explodes and dies.
"Scratch is not designed at all for professional level games" I hope you understand that Scratch was meant to teach kids the basics of programming since the beginning. If you really want to make a professional game on Scratch, use a Scratch mod like Turbowarp or something "Scratch also favors generic and simplistic games" It's not an issue with Scratch, it's an issue with the community. The community (mostly children) prefer generic and simplistic games, so the trending algorithm pushes them to the front page. I'm not saying that's a good thing; I'm just explaining why Scratch's Trending page favors those games.
@@Sunrymoon Look at Scratch's statistics page (found in the site's footer). Funnily enough I was gonna leave Scratch after that project but Scratch didn't want me to leave on a high note.
Pretty much the reason why some advanced learners still use scratch is the community. You can get much more free exposure on Scratch (still wondering why I spent nearly 10 hrs to make an atom simulator and it got less views than decorating a Christmas tree)
hi im the ip banned girl again, i watched this and thought about it this time. i think they deactivated they auto mod onto popular creators, and that to the people like me that had like 2 followers, it was more strict due to scratch maybeeee not knowing its users and so throwing random AI bans. it has been now 7 months since my last appeal attempt, im gonna try again later in the following days, wish me luck with their horrendous Staff, or maybe bots i dont know anymore.
Honestly after this I think I'm going to start using Gand IDE, but I'll still use Scratch as well and most likely more. The only thing keeping me there is a super wholesome Kirby fanbase I found there and I just can't leave that fanbase.
Getting into gcses and Gandi's programming translations ( scratch blocks to python ) sounds absolutely perfect for someone like me. I'm really good at scratch and just need to learn the basics of other languages to utilise them to my full capabilities.
i hate 'remix culture' omfg i dont like how the scratch team says oh remixes are good for learning or wtv no they are not its just used to pump out sh*tty projects fast
So what? Kids deserve better, I would rather have kids use and watch high quality content that is good plus Kids should also be given a chance to make advanced games and the "it's for kids" excuse isn't ok. We should give them smart and good things not bad and dumb stuff
Doesn't excuse having a bunch of issues and overall becoming a worse experience than it used to be. Getting worse overtime is bad regardless of if something's for kids. Like the other person said, kids deserve better, and to have the best most enjoyable experience they can.

One of my favorite creators on scratch was a mini-celebrity on there. They got mass reported with everything project they posted. They were forced off of scratch. They are Moss-Shadow.
I used Scratch for 2 years. And it was fun. But I never got following for making projects with hard work. I wanted to make games which were different and cool, but they never got enough following as the generic projects. So, I left. Maybe I would return, or maybe not. But thank you for reminding about Gandi IDE, I would use it now :)
I stopped using Scratch in 2021 once i noticed how powerful and overall better Turbowarp really was and Scratch just faded into obscurity once i also discovered Penguinmod and how good it was. Scratch banning me for a 3-4 days and then unban me only to permanently ban me 3-4 more days later for the same reason was a traumatic experience for me. Especially with the Hacking incident that happened
As a scratch animator i might loo into these things you mentioned. Question about gandi ide so you said something about multiplayer how limited is it are there more blocks to do specific things.
The problem with scratch is that whenever there is a game that has passed the limits of scratch by a mile it’s always some kind of fan game based off of a not so popular indie game and is almost impossible to find
the only reason I stay on scratch is because of the social media aspect and the mini-communities on the site that prioritize a single game or something.
I feel like its pretty simple atleast on my end, alot of people enjoy horror and scratch hates those and I feel like thats making me and alot of other creators thinking of quiting. and with what you have been talking about I feel like theres just a simple fix to this, st just needs to add more blocks to add for more possibilities. also another stupid limitation is how small the max file size is, it makes it really hard to import songs 3 minutes or longer
I've been using scratch for a LONG time, I wanna move on cause I've also noticed that passion is never a good way to get popular on scratch, well, to be honest I don't really even want to be that popular I just don't think those generic platformers and things should be at the top when AMAZING projects exist out there, I wanna move on but I have no clue where to start. I might look into that other thing he said in the vid tho
Me and my friends used to use scratch and for a while I forgot about it and left the community because I moved to a different place, I have now forgotten my password but I still look at the old scratch and old me and I wish scratch would be as forgiving and more interactive as it used to be but all good things come to an end eventually.

Scratch is filled with nonstop brainrot in the animations section and it feels not like a kids website anymore; it won't be able to call it a kids website because they are SO toxic these days and 5 year olds just roam it mass reporting everyone like SCRATCH REALLY SUCKS on griffpatch's chat there are fucking 6 year olds advertising their games and scratch ignore my emails when i am banned from THAT STUPID MODERATION and when they look they JUST SAY TO FUCKING WAIT IT OUT like what??? + Cheddargirl sucks

1:40 that is 10 fps. not 30. also scratch on Firefox runs at 20 FPS, meaning you're not even right.
this "30 fps" version of the clip you hit isn't even comparable to Scratch with 20 FPS
3:14 it actually *renders* at a higher resolution than that (unless you're using pen, but whatever, it's fine)
4:10 I agree with this, but that's a community issue. (one that is not helped by good people not wanting to use scratch)
5:09 I hate to say, but yeah. fuck scratch when it comes to moderation.
idk where did u get the info about firefox running at 20 fps but i don't think it's true (unless u could say your source?)
I use firefox, but not everybody does so it's pretty much true that it runs at whatever speed scratch runs, not being affected by browser speed.

Scratch is a stepping point for coders. I myself learned scratch when i was younger. then once i got older i made connections in new languages to scratch. this allowed me to learn better langauges a lot faster because i already used those lines in the form of blocks. (also this is a lego language made for 8-11 yr olds dont sweat it that much)
Scratch is still being used as a challenge to do not do simple things while it's a simple coding app, like people make "3D" fps games and stuff.

I literally once got banned for 3 days because I had a water gun in my game 🗿
1:34 we all just know that this is 24 fps, LOWER than scratch's framerate, and the "30 fps" clip is at 12 FPS. THATS WHY IT LOOKS CHOPPY, HUH.
3:31 and here you obviously used a pixelated effect to make it worse than it is.
1:30 you can only see the difference because you put the higher fps first. and then after that you show the geometry dash one on scratch and it looked perfectly fine. you know why?! because there isnt a problem with 30 fps. you exaggerating
Do you know how hard it is to play GD at 30 fps 😭

Turbowarps great, especially with upgrades such as pointer lock, infinite clones, etc
Overall this video is shiiiit. have a good day
I'm not chastising it for being an advanced tool. I know scratch is a beginners program. i'm chastising it for it's terrible moderation and rules.
Yeah, the stuff scratch is capable of at its full potential is incredible considering it was made for kids, but they were made by extremely dedicated people who treat scratch like a job. Maybe not griffpatch though, he still finds fun in making those hyper-advanced games

Yea its so obvious
