    For those curious, here are the full day kindergarten requirements in Washington State :) We are required to follow this, & it explains what areas we must have in our classroom, what “play to learn” time is, and more! Thought I would share why I am setting up my room the way I am ☺️ Not sure if there are similar requirements in place in other states or not!

      haileykatelynn that was really interesting to read! I teach third grade in Virginia but my degree is in Early Childhood (PreK-3rd). I really appreciate how much consideration is taken in your state to child development and age appropriate curriculum. Unfortunately my state isn’t as in tune with early childhood development. I do have one question though, I see all the items that are highlighted stating that each classroom is required to have all of those things. Does your school provide those items? I know you mention buying a lot of things at goodwill. Are you reimbursed at all? I know teachers everywhere (myself included) spend hundreds of dollars each school year on their classrooms but it just seems like if the state is making these items a requirement they should be provided in each classroom.

    I suggest taking up the scissors and only pass them out when needed. That would keep the problem with the children cutting their hair, clothes, papers, other kids' hair. They will do that. Even some of my first graders did that. You would have more space for the crayon boxes. All of those center things are so cute. The kids can just take a book to that little nook. No need to rearrange the library.

      Kids&cats I agree, I teach 1st grade and don’t keep my scissors our because kiddos love to make a mess or cut their hair.

    Commenting lots of praise again today, because girl you are rocking this. I’m literally 2.5 minutes in and I’m like YES GIRL! I loved that you read through comments, appreciated the help, but were ultimately not swayed by others opinions. It’s your classroom and your vision, and you very respectfully stated that.

    Your room is coming along nicely! Your district has provided a wonderful space for you. I am also very impressed with your confidence. You are honest about things you haven't figured out yet, but I have seen your confidence increase so much since you taught summer school!
    Also you mentioned you needed more snack containers. You can order all of those things from Dollar Tree online. Personally I hate going from store to store to get enough of what I need. Keep up the good work!

    Have you thought about having the mailboxes face the door? It would allow you to sort things into them while keeping an eye on your room and keep the block area from climbing into the mailboxes too. Also a mr. Clean eraser will clean up your caddies 👍🏻

    Love your classroom so far!! Play to learn time is so much fun for the kids. Do you know if you run small groups during that time? Also, I would check with other teachers and see if there is a state requirement on where your library has to be placed. When I taught Pre-K we were required to have the library away from the louder centers like blocks and building. Maybe that was just an Iowa/Kansas thing!! Lots of progress you have made and it is turning out so nice! :)

    you should turn the student mailbox shelf around facing the other way where the slots are facing the left where the door is at, so then when the students are coming in they can turn in their work and also on the way out. And that way when the students are in that area building then they're not in the way of students, or you trying to turn stuff in.

    Hailey! Great organizing! You may want to invest in some cleaning supplies: GooGone (removes all the lables and sticky stuff) and Mr. Clean erasers will clean any permanent marker (i.e. the orange caddy bin) and if it's extra dark than use some hand sanitizer to remove the rest!

    It seems like there is so much stuff for them to play with. Maybe take some stuff out and rotate in toys/activities every other month...vs having every single thing out and in a place. I think this is going to be hard to maintain. I would imagine they aren’t going to have tons of play time...it isn’t daycare or preschool, so having less options seems easier for you.

    • @haileykatelynn
      @haileykatelynn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Washington State requires full day kindergarten to actually have 60 minutes or more of “play to learn” time! It’s called “WA Kids” if you are curious for more information!

      haileykatelynn thanks for info. I still think rotating out toys wouldn’t be a bad idea and it would allow you to not have to manage as many bins. Kids actually do better with less...it becomes overwhelming for them just like for us! But to each his own! I’m enjoying your journey! Not hate, just unsolicited opinions. 😉

    • @Oliveyourmoney
      @Oliveyourmoney 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think rotations of play toys would be good because keeping things organized may get a bit much and as you know the kids tend to leave stuff everywhere.

    Speaking from experience I definitely recommend that you don’t put out scissors or glue sticks for the kiddos until you teach them how to use them properly. Their curiosity will definitely compel them to start cutting and gluing random things including themselves and other kids! Lol I teach prek and only take those supplies out for supervised activities and then they immediately get put away when we are done

    Paint the back of that bookshelf facing the library with chalk paint or dry erase paint. That way the kids doing blocks can also draw "blueprints" or whatever they want

  • @saymmmkayYT

    Wow... for only 3 days your room is looking great!!! I don’t think it would fit but is it possible to turn the bookshelf with the dry erase side showing (same as the one when you enter your classroom) and have it face the built in bookshelves? I don’t know if that makes sense. As in, only one side (the right) is touching the wall with the white floating bookshelves. If that fit it would be perfect & the kids would have plenty of space to sit in groups or for playtime. Can’t wait to see all the letters & labeling haha... seriously :)
