About the firecracker rods, explained at 21:21 Uranium is not magnetic by itself, so it would not be possible to "fire" it from a railgun. Also, a lighter material would be better as it would reach higher speeds and thus be easier to hit at longer distances. Something like an aluminum or iron alloy with a proportion of depleted uranium or tungsten could work. I would also question the effect of the thermobaric filler material surrounding the penetrator. It most likely would not have much effect and would simply burn on the armor rather than penetrating it. A more reasonable firecracker or Minengeschoss would be of an iron alloy with a moderate amount of depleted uranium or tungsten, giving it a good mix of magnetic and armor-piercing properties. The penetrator would also be hollow to protect the thermobaric filler material during "firing" and penetration, thus ensuring the best possible performance on target. But that's just my interpretation, feel free to argue over it.

@@DawnofVictory2289 Tried it on my new(er) laptop. Clearer, but I think the font is 1-2 sizes too small, even on full screen, maybe that is where the "fuzziness" came from.
I have had an idea for quite some time. It is a given that the warships would be emitting photons by the truck load as they maneuvered and discharged weapons. Not to mention the electronic warfare would be very noticeable. Now within a year of the battle, you get a ship with good sensers and optics with good resolution and place it several light months to the system’s north above the battle area. From this point, the vessel could record all the photons radiating from the battle. The battel could be recorded almost as it was happening.
The answer to this is yes. Here’s another one: what makes you think it didn’t happen? I think it makes sense that someone did in fact record this battle, likely one or several of the superpowers. However, what do they have to gain from making the information public? It’s clear both the Reich and Soviets knew what happened, suppressed the information and sacked officials to avoid a major conflict. OTO and the Sphere would probably act similarly. Even if they had perfect knowledge of how it went down, there is very little they can gain from releasing that information (for now). Your point is lovely btw. I wish people applied physics to sci fi more often.
I would argue that the text needs to be a bit larger if you want it to be actually readable without having to zoom. Like about 20% larger for the text on the left and about 40% larger for the text at the bottom. I'm also not sure, despite all the possible "connecting to earthly heritage" stuff etc, if the Germans would still call their space forces terms like the "High Seas Fleet". But i gotta say: Great work on this video and i can't wait for more!
I didn't really enjoy the first video, but THIS. THIS is what I signed up for. I hope you do more of these. But I will say, I'd like to see lesser conflicts besides the superpower v superpower match up.
I loved this video, improves upon the first lore vid, and I liked the 'enhanced' type video with the UI elements and the different graphics as the vid advanced. The artwork for it is amazing, and the audio bit for the hockey match was quite good at the beginning. My one bit of constructive feedback would be, if you're going to do text bits of information, then they need to be readable. You flashed them for not too long so I think you could display them to be more visible/readable, and just have it drop off the screen. I'd be interested in reading those pop ups with a quick pause but couldn't do sadly. So maybe in a future vid, the text information could be more clearly displayed. Other than that, loved this lore vid, with the details on the battle and the different strategies of the Soviet and German fleets. Along with the different interpterion's of what happened. A really get lore vid and loved the visuals.
This makes me curious as to how sports work in Dawn of Victory, since it can take weeks to get from point A to B would it be like the teams in a given system would playoff and then clusters and then the finals or what else? I think the seasons would have to be longer to accommodate the increased travel times but I wonder would Stadiums have to have a certain amount of gravity or would they just have it be different for every stadium?
@@EGRJ Great point, It might be that the bets can only be placed if you are in the cluster the game is being held or the the star system. That and bets are closed mid match so that it can reach everyone by the time it’s over. That or pre game bets only.
Well the General in command of OTO was going for briefing in virtually "Real time" if the timeframe is to be believed. Hence there definitely is an instant communication over most of Orion arm avaiable to Government. Marc will hate it as he does everything possible to never acknowledge Battletech consider different tiers of FTL comlink: HPG network - expensive, maybe not even possible on but largest of warships, requiring massive investment per unit of information per time. Only viable to governments and large corporations in any meaningful large scale use. perhaps "receiving" can be easier to have propaganda broadcasts possible with no need of massive hardware. Evey government would see value in that. (its essentialy jumpdrive sending massless information so it doesnt need "jumppoint") K series Transmitter (originaly SLDF only) low amount of information sendable only in limited distance - you either need to link them and it isnt completely "instant" but can only send lets say a page of text in a 10 minute pulse on given bandwith). (that would also significantly limit combat use and it would be interceptable.) lets say it reaches 10 ly and then has to have another receiver and it takes 1 Ly per minute. its use could be VERY detectable so military force might not be that interested in using it unless very "safe". They could simply be jammed by broadcasting static.
Major incident between superpowers, that is suppresed and suspiciously vague? Great piece of worldbuilding! "And that is the sound of 200,000 screaming fans in the Templin Keppe Arena here tonight!" Hehe, good easter egg! 🤣
Being from Germany myself, I am honestly mostly curious about what you guys are going to do with the German Reich... Are you going down a more Wolfenstein-ish path? Maybe even something more Iron Sky? Or something completely new? Looking forward to find out more about this German Reich!
For the fleet action off Vega, I'm curious as to how there would be such little evidence out in the open. Any sufficiently high-powered telescope or observatory should theoretically be able to see a medium or high-intensity battle, as long as they happen to be looking at the Vega system. And since light travels slower than actual info on this universe (sinec there's FTL), you could have people intentionally going to far-away systems and just waiting until they can see the battle. It seems rather hard to cover up any sort of battle in space.
That would have to be a super-duper-hyper-ultra-high-resolution telescope. Our most sophisticated telescopes today still struggle to detect Jupiter-sized planets. And given the regional astrography, any telescope that _was_ powerful enough to witness those events would likely be controlled by their respective states.
This was quite an affecting video...the music choice was very haunting and appropriate. I'd say I was more invested in this video than I was with Firebase Hector, which I only moderately engaged with. I'd say I found the first story more plausible than the second, given the understandable errors made on both sides (a compassionate diversion from a tightly orchestrated plan to aid a friendly ship in distress, and a loosely governed paramilitary group likely trying to take down wounded prey laid low by a mine). The second story, while hinging on a substantial blunder, seems too well orchestrated for a mission gone wrong. Though the second story seems somewhat plausible (and possibly believable on its own), the first story seems more plausible by comparison. There's also a couple typos such as "viel" in the body text descriptions...bit late to change those, but something to watch out for in the future. Though given your production problems (my sympathies, by the way) they might've slipped through in the disruption.
I’ve gotta agree with you on which story feels more plausible, either or could obviously could be true given the murky waters we are stepping into. But for me the first one feels a lot more plausible, the deciding factor is that I don’t care how big your fleet is if you lose 200+ ships in a battle you arnt going to be able to keep that under wraps. But I could very well be wrong.
Agreed, but that account does paint the Soviets in a better light, not only did they try to avoid conflict to begin with, but they won the battle as a result of their doctrine. I wouldn't be surprised if certain details were changed and spread as rumors by the USSR, and the second story pedaled more by the Germans. Either way it's cool we're even asking these questions, it speaks to the depth of the worldbuilding going on here.
Somehow, the least surprising detail about this was not that the USSR was up to their known political infighting between factions, nor that the Germans still had a convoluted military chain of command that practically guarantees mixups, mistakes, and rogue actions, nor because of these details, the Germans and the Soviets nearly kicked off Worlds War 3. I mean, they are surprising, particularly that last one, considering that in our history, it was the US that most often brought us closer to WW3, with Kennedy having come the closest ever with the Cuban Missile Crisis (yeah, really, pretty much every escalation then was because of Kennedy trying to keep his campaign promise of being hard on the Soviets), but then again, this is an alternate history, so perhaps I should not be that surprised. That said, the least surprising detail is that the hockey arena was named after the Templin Institute. I mean, I am not complaining at all, but when I heard it, I thought, "Really? Well, better than a planet or star cluster, I guess."
I was about to provide an explanation and realized I had none. I guess I mean, "summer on Leningrad" or like, maybe there's an Orion-wide calendar? Either way, I'll give this more consideration for next time! - Marc
Even if still using the Gregorian calendar, seasons are dependent on which hemisphere you are living in. Given that the Soviets and Axis powers were all based in Earth's northern hemisphere, I would assume that references to "summer" would be June to September.
Honestly preferred the first lore video, the emotional aspect of a siege, the combined arms, the echo of failed peacemaking missions. But this is still cool! You're doing great work. I'm just worried you're biting off more than you can chew with so much detail on an event that takes place long before there's an actual war.
i noticed on one of your earlier map building or world building videos someone had asked about communication across the stars and how ther would be lag. well i would suggest quantum communication. i worked with a couple people on their capstone paper in college over the technology and it is totally possible even now with quantum processors and servers. it would allow instantaneous communication across the arm or technically...anywhere in the universe because of how quantum particles work. you can also tie anything that doesnt have mass to a quantum particle interaction. ie anything that we already see now on computers. the simple connection or disconection between sister particles is your 1 and 0 for the basis of your computing. its crazy simple and crazy scary because it breaks all known laws of time and space but...having worked and seen the research...it works haha.
That was a great video! Now i really want to see how the batlle looked! Still confused why there are luftwaffe and kriegsmarine space ships, whats the difference?
Bit late but i believe its playing on the real world fact that the German Reich had an extremely convoluted and confusing military and command structure.
How does one even lay effective mines in stellar space, much less interstellar? Last I checked, space is a bit large to create a chokepoint around a particular area, and even then, you can simply move. Precision in space is only necessary at the point of maneuver, as far as I know.
On the other hand, being a passive weapon, mines are one of the few space-borne threats a ship wouldn't immediately detect. They might not have enough time to evade once they realize that floating speck on their scopes isn't just passing them by.
@@d.b.4671 I see that benefit, and raise you that either you have mines that activate at tremendous distances, or so many mines that becomes obvious mines in fact are in an area. Wikipedia notes that the Asteroid Belt contains about 3% of the mass of the Moon, which works out to around 2.2*10^21 kg. The International Chamber of Shipping estimates around 11 billion tons of goods are moved by boat each year, or around 1*10^13 kg. That's a difference of 8 zeroes. The distance between objects in the Asteroid is typically around 1 million kilometers. Suffice to say, in order to saturate an area with enough mines to have passive area denial, you would require a monumental logistical effort, even before considering orbital dynamics. Your thoughts?
Well im a bit late @@Joel-qo6gt But two possibilities Both rely on mines activating from large distances and locking on to ships The first is that FTL jump points between star systems are always locked in the same space and thus ships entering from that direction could be predicted The second is that they are placed near planetary bodies Most likely at Lagrange points if that planetary body happens to have a second orbiting body We see in video that the first scenario occurred near a planet And if we assume ships in this setting use planetary bodies as gravitational sling shots One could predict their movements and lay mines ahead of time Mines activating from long distance could be a reason why in both scenarios only a single mine detonated
The account addressing advanced and unidentified assailants seems to line up with the comprehensive review of warship design by all major powers following the incident. It might have been coincidental, maybe even sparked by that Soviet-German exchange, but it still kinda looks like it lines up with the angle of the unidentified belligerents.
I didn’t even think of that, I was leaning toward the first story being true since it felt at bit more plausible but your right. It makes me suspect that a rogue actor decided to test out their brand shiney new fleet of experimental warships and I didn’t go well for their fascists or the communists. Of course now I sound like conspiracy theorists.
I lile the idea of sci fi geopolitical war across the galaxy, but the thing that tyrn me off, is the use of previous real empires or states like the USSR, it could be more intersting if you could differents form of goverments that have its own form of political organization or they are part of a group of states with its own rules. PD: English is not my mother language, i hope to the one who is reading this, get the idea.

@@DawnofVictory2289 Tried it on my new(er) laptop. Clearer, but I think the font is 1-2 sizes too small, even on full screen, maybe that is where the "fuzziness" came from.
oh, and the narrator is excellent ! Love the tone and speed.
This is amazingly well written
Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this video! It was amazing and I’m loving this whole project!
Insane intro! I was so confused for a second..
I usually just listen to these type of things but I decided to watch it this time and the immersion was next level.

Good stuff, hope to hear more soon!
Came upon this video by random recommendation. I am intrigued by this worldbuilding and shall follow it closeley!
Great video, amazing quality. Great UI added too, though admittedly I do listen more than watch.
No worries, we're looking at releasing this on Podcast services too.
"58th 5 year plan" sent me lol
They kicked the hell out of eachother, but both felt the battle made themselves look incompetent.
Listening to this was pure bliss.
amazing visuals this is the best video youve made

2262 ... The Interstellar Alliance and Centauri Republic went to war
Such great and compelling story, I wish I had models and rules to wargame out this and other battles in this universe.
Finally some Starship art, please make more, I need more.
This makes me curious as to how sports work in Dawn of Victory,
since it can take weeks to get from point A to B would it be like the teams in a given system would playoff and then clusters and then the finals or what else?
I think the seasons would have to be longer to accommodate the increased travel times but I wonder would Stadiums have to have a certain amount of gravity or would they just have it be different for every stadium?
somehow who knows more about sports than me needs to figure this out, pronto. - Marc
And then there's betting. Do they close bets when the game is supposed to be over? Or just when the news could actually reach a given bookmaker?
@@EGRJ Great point, It might be that the bets can only be placed if you are in the cluster the game is being held or the the star system. That and bets are closed mid match so that it can reach everyone by the time it’s over. That or pre game bets only.
Well the General in command of OTO was going for briefing in virtually "Real time" if the timeframe is to be believed.
Hence there definitely is an instant communication over most of Orion arm avaiable to Government.
Marc will hate it as he does everything possible to never acknowledge Battletech
consider different tiers of FTL comlink:
HPG network - expensive, maybe not even possible on but largest of warships, requiring massive investment per unit of information per time.
Only viable to governments and large corporations in any meaningful large scale use. perhaps "receiving" can be easier to have propaganda broadcasts possible with no need of massive hardware.
Evey government would see value in that.
(its essentialy jumpdrive sending massless information so it doesnt need "jumppoint")
K series Transmitter (originaly SLDF only) low amount of information sendable only in limited distance - you either need to link them and it isnt completely "instant" but can only send lets say a page of text in a 10 minute pulse on given bandwith).
(that would also significantly limit combat use and it would be interceptable.)
lets say it reaches 10 ly and then has to have another receiver and it takes 1 Ly per minute.
its use could be VERY detectable so military force might not be that interested in using it unless very "safe".

Ah yes, the age of disinformation in space
21:24 typo in the sidebar. "Kriegsmairne"
Yo this slapped so goddamn hard omg.
This is incredible and amazing!
I've yet to find someone who can outsmart bullet doctrine
Fantastic work! My personal nitpick is mentioning "summer" would probably be an anachronism in discussing interstellar conflict.
I mean they're still using the Gregorian calendar, I'm guessing seasons just means the general time of the year rather than anything climate related.
Still makes me wonder how the FTL works in this setting. Does it use a form of jump space or quantum teleportation?
I want to know too
Need a Jon Bois 2262 Hockey video
love the art
Honestly preferred the first lore video, the emotional aspect of a siege, the combined arms, the echo of failed peacemaking missions. But this is still cool! You're doing great work. I'm just worried you're biting off more than you can chew with so much detail on an event that takes place long before there's an actual war.
Holy sh*t this still exists?? I was following this on moddb a billion years ago. I checked back in every now and again.aa Cool!
This was awesome!
Wish the website was still up and the mod was ready.
This was fantastic omg
i noticed on one of your earlier map building or world building videos someone had asked about communication across the stars and how ther would be lag. well i would suggest quantum communication. i worked with a couple people on their capstone paper in college over the technology and it is totally possible even now with quantum processors and servers. it would allow instantaneous communication across the arm or technically...anywhere in the universe because of how quantum particles work. you can also tie anything that doesnt have mass to a quantum particle interaction. ie anything that we already see now on computers. the simple connection or disconection between sister particles is your 1 and 0 for the basis of your computing. its crazy simple and crazy scary because it breaks all known laws of time and space but...having worked and seen the research...it works haha.
Hell yeah!
Well im a bit late @@Joel-qo6gt
But two possibilities
Both rely on mines activating from large distances and locking on to ships
The first is that FTL jump points between star systems are always locked in the same space and thus ships entering from that direction could be predicted
The second is that they are placed near planetary bodies
Most likely at Lagrange points if that planetary body happens to have a second orbiting body
We see in video that the first scenario occurred near a planet
And if we assume ships in this setting use planetary bodies as gravitational sling shots
One could predict their movements and lay mines ahead of time
Mines activating from long distance could be a reason why in both scenarios only a single mine detonated
So aliens attacked both fleets and this almost caused a war that would have weakened humanity.
“Antares Gap” I see what you did there
Awesome 😎
This is awesome.
Very nice!
Damn that was sick as hell
where do i find the music for this?
0:56. Shouldn't the acronym be OAHL?
What is the background music used? I’m dying to know, it’s fantastic
