After hearing that the universe would take large inspiration from the Cold War I was already hooked, now to see a sci-fi parallel to the Vietnam war is beyond my wildest expectations, even having similar dates is a nice touch and I hope to see more events inspired by those of our own history. But by the time those artillery shells are ordered to hit inside Firebase Hector, we will have walked way past doing anything about it."
@justinhamilton2334 the artillery in the surrounding hills bombarding the air strip really felt like Dien Bien Phu, but I can definitely see Khe Sanh too.
Has very little to do with Dien Bien Phu, the point of DBH was to force the Viet Minh out into the open and was lost because the French could not maintain airborne supply. DBH was also deliberately positioned in a valley This is Khe Sahn, with the attempt to interdict jungle supply, war of patrols, position on hillsides, and the questionable political and military value of the entire base
the problem with watching something like this is that i end up coming up with a whole slew of characters that will never see the light of day. I have started writing out a story in my head and now want to flesh it out, but cant because its not my world. Spectacular job writing this. I am excited for the future of this world.
I mean, they are saying that this whole project is more creating a setting than telling a linear narrative. I’m sure they are anticipating fan fictions set within the universe. Just imagine, you're a grunt chilling in a trench at FB Hector. You're starving, you're sleep-deprived, you're drenched in sweat from the tropical climate. You've been bombarded so consistently that it no longer terrifies you, it just feels routine, so when you hear rounds incoming, at first you think nothing of it. You grab your helmet, your vest, your pack, and fumble your rifle sling on. Beyond the wire, gunfire suddenly picks up. A missile corkscrews through the night to obliterate some part of the checkpoint nearby, mortar fire whistling down with anti air defenses roaring at them between long bursts at falling reentry vehicles. Thunder, lightning, lightning, thunder. Earthquake. Firebase Hector's ADA complement has been gradually drawn down; deployed elsewhere, withdrawn to depot, or moved to other fronts. This is from the renaming of a firebase after the death of a soldier garrisoned there. Happened twice in that valley with Restrepo and Vimoto. At least that was my first thought. Ofc Vietnam is the real inspiration
Oh wow, I cant believe you guys and Dawn of Victory is still alive. Your maps, pictures and universe literally made me create a tabletop army of spaceships and land army to recreate the DoV idea of war in the Orion. Please. do continue and create this awesome piece of gaming history.

This is like a sci-fi Dien Bien Phu except with the siege being a "victory" or the Tet Offensive with the surprise attack and the damage to American civilian opinion. Very cool, can't wait for more!
The intro to this video as well as the aesthetic gave Vietnam vibes. Very very excited to see where this goes love the grounded look of it all none of the usual “clinical” levels of clean in Sci-Fi military facilities.
Very well done! Narration was excellent, ambient sound effects added a lot and the narrative itself was a great insight into the state of the Arm in general and the nature of warfare in it. Really fun project, look forward to seeing more in the future!
this has me much more excited for the sci fi choice then i previously was, can’t wait to see what the soldiers of the orion arm look like and what inspires those uniforms.
This hit a little too close to IRL events with it being a almost direct parallel to a battle in vietnam and the combination of US Army-ANA-firebase hector since Hector was one of the the predesignated firepoints we had outside our fob for mortars and artillery incase of a attack on the fob... and it was the cross roads next to the ANA compound, so we were always extra watchful of that cause we really didn't trust the ANA since the only two attacks we had had on the fob were from guys in ANA uniform that they "claimed were not ANA but must have stolen the uniforms"
wish the editing style was more traditional templin institute instead of a static image. Makes this feel like an audiobook and all the terms and places are difficult to keep track of. The writing is good, but add more visual aids.
It might sound odd given what the story is about. But I really like the aesthetic of the warships in the background. I enjoy the the slanted armored angular look, aggressive yet practical. Really looking forward to seeing more of what this world starts looking like!
I'm not sure if I really like the fact that it is so close to reality. The idea of a cold war happening in a semi realistic space opera setting is intriguing, but this feels more like The cold war (the one in our earth) just being retold. Maybe it is just my expectations, but I imagined this universe more like a modern futuristic scenario in which familiar ideologies would be implied, instead of a retro-futuristic reteling of real history
Love it! But. I have only 1 complaint. Not enough Art to flush out the world/conflict/location/characters/equipment. Hope future videos have more visuals! Keep it up!
Fighting incredibly hard and then abandoning the position to the enemy later is just peak american. Excellent work, excited for what else comes of this series
Really cool, it feels like a documentary from within the universe itself. That said, as some others have pointed out, the lack of music, the mostly static background, and the monotone tone of the narration can make it a bit of a slog. I understand the limitations of the budget, but I really think that adding some extra images and music would help make it more dynamic and entertaining.
I’ll add an anecdote from my grandfathers own experience: “…Each morning, just prior to sunrise, a group of enemy mortar men would set up outside the boundary fence and lob a few rounds into the base. While a routine occurrence, it would force the base into a state of alert. Forcing awake, men who had already spent most of the night on watch. One day a group of the base’s artillerymen who had grown tired of the constant alerts and stand-downs every morning came up with a plan. They carefully sighted their 155mm artillery piece to a spot the mortar men had used a few days prior and waited patiently through the night. The next morning the predictable thuds of mortar fire were met with the roar of cannon. No remains were found of the enemy were ever found. Just a small bit of twisted meta was left to burry. The soldiers slept peacefully that following morning.”
Really appreciate the lack of music, I love listening to the templin institute videos, but the music makes it a bit exhausting. This is perfekt, the background ambience is much better
A cool idea for a location would be like, an Anarchist planet that the superpowers think will be easy pickings, but every one of them ends up giving up eventually
I need to see what the American infantry looks like. Do they still use traditional munitions, do they wear armor? I have this look in my head of partial combat armor with web gear over the top, with a fully encased helmet. Have a little motto phrase on the side, really lean into the Vietnam helmet aesthetic.
This was great, I just have one point of contention. No matter how incompetent US military leadership got. They would not allow heavy fire assets within fire range of their important bases without sufficient defensive measures I mean even in the 2020s CRam puts in work.
this type of nonsense happened plenty during the Vietnam War, due to politcal and military incompetence, so I can see this as a possibilty happening a Firebase Hector because some pencil neck pushing Colonel thought that the 3 cities had no strategic value anymore and pulled a Biden Afghanistan maneuver and it end the same way.
A lot can change in 250 years Probably not possible to make a blanket statement such as "the us military would never x" The enemy gets a vote in your decision. It may simply be the case that while the leadership would never allow the enemy to get within range, the enemy did not care about the US's permission.
Imo, while the story, ambience, and interactive background are excellent, the lack of music and minimal art made the video feel very static, and thus it had trouble holding my attention. The presentation used in Templin's standard lore videos is a lot more engaging to me.
Please solve this: If the US has space superiority and both the cities and space landingsites have fixed positions, and the exit entrances of the suggestes space lanes have fixed/predictable positions how is there any smugling? Why land the smuggled cargo transfer it to another ship to then let it lift of to be in us controlled space again? Why do they land at all? If they got ships in geostationary orbit above the 3 cities spaceports any freigther that has not been cleared by us customs should not be allowed to leave or be shot down. I am not saying this can't be solved, but please adres this. Maybe there are agreements about shipping or something?
Likely the smuggler ships are pretending not to be smugglers, and transferring goods from ship to ship is less suspicious than having a single "legitimate" merchant ship travel between two suspicious locations directly
for the same reason that nations transfer cargo at sea before and after passing through maritime choke points. to confuse enforcement. IRL shipping routes are very predictable and quite fixed. and the US navy has maritime dominance. however Countries like IRAN will stop along a route and meet up with other ships to transfer cargo that is sanctioned onto their ships and then sail back home. rather than forcing someone to come into port and reveal their intention to violate sanctions. particualrly common in the indian ocean just after transiting the straights of Malacca (and there is really only one route through there unless you want to diver to the Sunda Straight which takes you way off course or want to go over Australia (which will also take most vessels even further way off course and his heavily patrolled by the Australians) smugglers also routinely meet with ships at sea to transfer cargo on and off the vessels to avoid port inspections while still getting the advantages of shipping by way of large cargo vessel.
This is some dope work! Narration and SFX great. I would like to see some more pictures that visualizes the narration. I think that would immerse even more people. Maybe even ad short sequences where we get to hear the sequence actually take place and then continue with the narration. (Not a native speaker)
As a retired 47 guy, I love the reference to the Innkeepers, currently in Korea.
"Signal Discipline Enforced by Guillotine" is just an *amazing* touch in the artwork here.

This was so good, really immersive as well, pls get this narrator back, she's fantastic
I love it, though if I were to guess, this was HEAVILY inspired by the IRL Battle of Dien Bien Phu. Still, very well done

So, sci-fi retelling of the battle of Khe Sahn, the American *almost* Dien Bein Phu.
I dig it. Magnificent writing.
As a Europien I really don't care about 'nam, but I'm waiting to see what more will come!
Very good narrator on this!
This was good, looking forward to more.
Can we get a mention of what happened to smaller countries such as Australia. Even if they just got absorbed. I enjoyed the narration
I never thought I wanted something like this more ❤❤❤
I think the Narration was quite good, and Vietnam inspiration was pretty cool. I would say without music and a little more animation it's a bit dry.
Ahhh... Yes. Space Vietnam.
:) nice, reminded me of battle of Khe Sanh
This gives me ideas for my sci-fi story
About 5 minutes in and I thought, "yep, Vietnam."
Whenever Little Richard is played on a battlefield... the mission is almost always guaranteed to be a bloodbath.
This was great!
Reminds me of he battle of Dien Bien Phu which IRL costed France Vietnam. Awesome work!
A little Dien Bien Phu and Guadalcanal mixed in.
Space Vietnam sounds wild
I'm trying so much to like the WWII countries in space but it just seems strange to me
well it's templin work so I will keep watching
Yeah ima need more of these please and thank you
Welcome to Space Khe San, gentlemen.
Some folks are born, made to wave the flag, whooh they’re red white and blue~
I need to see what the American infantry looks like. Do they still use traditional munitions, do they wear armor? I have this look in my head of partial combat armor with web gear over the top, with a fully encased helmet. Have a little motto phrase on the side, really lean into the Vietnam helmet aesthetic.
"signal discipline enforced by guillotine"
Good to see America still has some French influence in 2282!
This is great!
A lot can change in 250 years
Probably not possible to make a blanket statement such as "the us military would never x"
The enemy gets a vote in your decision.
Spain mentioned!!!Rally the colours lets gooo
FINALLY!
Please solve this:
If the US has space superiority and both the cities and space landingsites have fixed positions, and the exit entrances of the suggestes space lanes have fixed/predictable positions how is there any smugling? Why land the smuggled cargo transfer it to another ship to then let it lift of to be in us controlled space again? Why do they land at all? If they got ships in geostationary orbit above the 3 cities spaceports any freigther that has not been cleared by us customs should not be allowed to leave or be shot down. I am not saying this can't be solved, but please adres this. Maybe there are agreements about shipping or something?
Yes not clear what value this is providing, vs transferring cargo at some deep-space refuelling depot or uncharactered asteroid base.
IRL shipping routes are very predictable and quite fixed. and the US navy has maritime dominance. however Countries like IRAN will stop along a route and meet up with other ships to transfer cargo that is sanctioned onto their ships and then sail back home. rather than forcing someone to come into port and reveal their intention to violate sanctions. particualrly common in the indian ocean just after transiting the straights of Malacca (and there is really only one route through there unless you want to diver to the Sunda Straight which takes you way off course or want to go over Australia (which will also take most vessels even further way off course and his heavily patrolled by the Australians) smugglers also routinely meet with ships at sea to transfer cargo on and off the vessels to avoid port inspections while still getting the advantages of shipping by way of large cargo vessel.
you should ask houthi
DOUBLE FEATURE?? Haven’t finished the first one yet!
Is this the same narrator from back in the early days of Templin!? In any case, excellent start to this new project!
Ok now you need to get a musician to make a in-universe version of fortunate son😂.
Looks like a 40k situation which is really neat that the culture picked up on events
Feels like Outer Space Khe Sanh
WELLCOME TO SPACE NAM
Damn i already hear 2269 version of Fortunate son playing from a VTOL
The VA sounds like Dr Halsey
Space Vietnam nice 👌🏻
I so want to be a part of this with my own world that came up with in jr high.
This is some dope work! Narration and SFX great. I would like to see some more pictures that visualizes the narration. I think that would immerse even more people. Maybe even ad short sequences where we get to hear the sequence actually take place and then continue with the narration. (Not a native speaker)
Please tell me they got that guy that made awesome cinematics based on Stellaris Invicta.
Love the new setting, though as someone who lives near roseau irl, it’s pronounced rose-oh up here, though I now prefer this pronunciation lol
