We have ten work trucks like that one. No rust on any of the cabs or frames. Its always the beds that go bad. Starts at the hinges. We removed the beds to blast away the rust. Didn't work out very well. We recycled the beds. We installed steel flatness and aluminium cabinets on top and underneath. We used stuff plastic fenders. Now, no rust. Its expensive but worth the money when we sell them. We also installed headache rollover bars. Repainted the 1972 c20 396 v8 400 turbo gearbenders o/d rebuilt rear limited slip 355 new susp. F and r. Holley inj. New w/tires. Lighting new seats console autometer. We didn't know how it would turn out much less sell. We put it out next to the road with a sign that read: highest bid wins this truck and yes, there is a reserve attached. We sold it and the same guy wants 4 more trucks. Now that's how you do it.
Love this truck, love this channel. I can't get enough of you two. The star of the show has to be your niece. Absolutely adorable with a personality to match!
Brings back memories. I drove an old C20 for years. Near same set up. 350, no A/C, 4 speed. I had factory duel tanks holding a total of 40 gallons. Needed it for the 10 mpg! You can't kill that truck! BTW I suspect it has the cast iron 4 speed trans like mine had. Yes 1st is not scynro. Don't need to use it unless your pulling out tree stumps or climbing mountains. Later models labeled the shift knob with an L rather than a 1. It will pull anything you hook to it. I remember mine had 16.5 "tube type" tires. Had to run inner tubes cuz the wheels were not made for tubeless tires. Smart change over to 16 tubeless. Enjoy!
I think this is my fave episode yet, 50 year old truck, runs like a dream apparently, fun trip, friends turning up for an impromptu car show, and no breakdowns. Keep it coming people. Oh, and I LOVE your dog
Really nice to see a wife who has a lot of intelligence and can appreciate the quality and the value of a nice truck her husband bought for her and she looks like she really likes it way to go girl.
I bought an old '69 Chevy C30 stepside. It was an old County Truck with a 327, two barrel and 4 speed. I bought it to tow my '62 Chevy II race car to the drag strip. The first trip, it smoked like a pig, used 2 quarts of oil and overheated towing uphill. I looked in the Recycler and found a disassembled 350 long block for $500. Forged pistons, .30 over and a machined block. It even came with all the bearings and gaskets. I assembled the engine using a Comp Cams Extreme Energy RV Cam, Edelbrock Streetmaster manifold and Hooker Headers. I replaced the clutch and reconditioned the radiator. First trip towing with the new motor, She ran cool, used no oil and I could pass people going uphill. That truck towed better than my new 96 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 360.
i had a 60 ford utility back in the mid 80's when i started my construction business loved that truck repainted it redid the interior had a great time with her...
I had one of those back in the 80's. It had a bad radiator so I filled it with water every day, when winter came, I drove it to work and back every day without any coolant, work was only about 2 miles away. The next summer I bought a radiator so I could go on a trip. That truck ran forever but it totally rotted away from the damn salt. The cab was so rotted that one of our barn cats got in through the rot hole and helped herself to my tuna sandwich.
Good to see you kids having fun! Finlay is better behaved than my grand kids for sure! Those c20s are unkillable if you change the oil and put air in the tires. Drove one for work for at least 10 years and it gave us ZERO problems.
The 350 motors were the best. First car was a 76 mercury cougar and I could not kill the motor. Ran great. Minimal rust. Rising gas prices in 1991 and 1992 and my parents talked me into getting a POS car. Just wish over the years that I would have kept the Cougar. Introduced by watching Josh with his Hilux truck. Good vibes seeing everyone come together. Love the videos. Godspeed on your future endeavors.
I had a 69 C-20 3/4 Ton. Brings back memories. I got mine set up to carry a piggy back camper. It had 2 fuel tanks and a 4 speed with a Granny Gear. Heavy Duty everything. I miss that truck. You guys are gonna have so much fun with that thing. I'm jealous.
I know I've put this in your face before, but my wife and I are so enamored with the two of you,... We are trying to find a decent J20 to restore in hopes to take our Grandkids out camping... we show them what we hope to accomplish and they tell us, "talk to the garage, maybe they can find one"... Honestly, my grands just LOVE seeing a loving couple project together. My wife and I will find our tow rig, and if you will, keep giving our grands hope...
Emily is every petrolheads dream girl .second is for normal starts first will pull anything . Lovely old worktruck . Probably worked hard and looked after well. I have always loved that locker back style. What the paint needs is a wipedown with some old engine oil and leaving alone .
I was excited seeing the 2006 Gto in your garage.I bought a 1965 new when I was 20, sold it four years later for a 1969 Firebird, wish I had kept it but who knew. Recently aquired a 2006 GTO, what a differance. Only way to go,6 speed tranny, some modification, the car is awesome.
So, You have a good utility/service truck. Clean her up, repair any rust issues, do a little body work, a fresh paint job, turn that idle speed down, and you will have a great way of being able to take care of some of your road issues with other vehicles. Its truly a keeper.
The 1st gear is a “granny gear”. It’s extra low 1st gear....not used unless pulling a heavy load....and never shift into granny gear unless you are totally stopped
My brother and I had almost the same truck (my dad’s originally). It was a 1970 3/4 ton GMC. Those floor shift 4 speeds were creeper gears in first gear. We started our masonry/ house moving business with it forty years ago. That truck was tough as nails. we used to put a full pallet of cement blocks on her (90 at 35 pounds each), plus a quarter yard of mason sand and three or four 100 # bags of mortar. Sometimes we skipped the sand and mortar and squeezed two pallets full of block instead.
1st timer..Emily is real, down home human bein..all are ..put later model 6spd manual in C-20...hadda 67 C-10," granny" 4spd. for 15 yrs..daily driver..finally stripped timing gear in 283...upgraded to 79 1 ton...still got it...old GM trucks never die...just get passed to next gen..God bless& keep on trukkin!!!
C10's run and drive like no other truck. I have a 67 stuffed with a mostly stock 454 and turbo 400 (Hailey's comet). Shes my baby and I love her so much. Great video you guys.
Like Aaron all that N O D D I N G ! My uncle had a 70 maybe 71 about that same color … (not a C20) GOOD TIMES MEMORIES FLOOD BACK … (and at the same time I MISS HIM SO MUCH! RIP U.P. Rest In Peace UNCLE PAUL!!!) Junkyard digs where’s MOOK? Glad y’all had a good party …
What a great episode! John from @madscientistgarage is so funny and such a nice dude! Steak dinner and a surprise car show?! Awesome. Plus he's a snazzy dresser in that @flyingsparksgarage @imperialbeachdad tee 😎
That sort of transmissions, at least here in Mexico, we call it "reinforced 1st". It's got a very low ratio so the truck can take off a little easier when fully loaded. When driving normally, just take off from 2nd, just like you did.
When I first started on the water department in 1988, I drove the exact same truck!! Only the cab interior was yellow too! Not great in snow storms here in New England though, LOL!
I say full resto for that truck in the same color. You never see the utility bodies done that way. I would put your logos on it as well, cool ride for sure!
I hope and pray one day God will send me a lovely lady who gets as excited over trucks/cars & builds as Emily does..Dude you knw this but you are truly blessed to have Her as your wife..May God bless Ya'll and the Family at Flying Sparks Garage & Merry CHRISTMAS to all!
You folks are SO REFRESHING to watch. Emily-you're a chronic optimist, and I LOVE that. You have a contagious smile and enthusiasm for life. All that, and you wrench, too! How could you BE any better. Subscribing now.
I have a great idea for the truck... sell it to me. lol.. My dad owned one just like it, with the exception of his was a blue 1970 and had a 454 in it. Other than that, it had the same work bed on it and everything. But when I got my license in 74, I drove that thing all the time, and just loved it. Some people see fancy cars with big engines and think that's the ideal thing, but to guys like me that grew up in the construction business, this is life, with fond memories. I happened to click on one of your videos today, and when I heard you talk, I knew you two were a fellow Texans. And yes, it was the word "yall" that gave it up. Great video.
That's a nice looking solid truck. My baby is a 1969 chevy 3/4 ton four wheel drive, manual transmission. And now has a vig block and disc brakes in the front. Your transmission is most likely a SM465. Your rear end looks like a HO72. Both my 69 and my 72 suburban have that rear end. Be careful they don't make ring and pinions for them any more. I know this for a fact. I broke my 69 and the shop could only get used in a 4:56 ratio which is what my 69 has. Our suburban has 4:11 gears and my wife broke it. No used set of that size. So I had to find a corporate 14 bolt and adjust the spring pirches. It's still parked with broke axle under it and new axle next to it. I forgot to check gear ratio of the new axle and I couldn't drag it through the dirt to get it under the suburban by myself. One of these days it will be running again. Good luck with your new Garfield.
I love the C20's. I currently have an '87 R10 that doesn't run at the moment, but it does turn over. Almost fully restored. Anyway. I had an Uncle Wayne. I miss him a lot sometimes.
I was born August 2 1967, yes I'm old...Haha. When I was 3 years old my Grandparents took me to Mexico in a 1969 Chevrolet truck pulling a trailer while my Mom attended school. That pickup was an awesome truck. We were there for several months. My Grandma said I learned to speak Spanish. Haha, I don't remember it now, except for ultera cervasa por favor.. Such good memories. Okay no I was not saying that at 3 years old. Hahaha.
You guys and I have so much in common. Boating, flying, and awesome automobiles. I'm so glad I found your channel. Thank you for all of the content and effort it takes to upload. If you ever come to Napa, CA I can set you up with some excellent winery tours and tasting.
Neat video! What more could you ask for, cool vehicles and cool people all havin a good time. We have a terrier in our family too, so that just makes it all the better. Enjoyed it!
Garfield got the job done very well indeed. I lived in Des Moines Iowa. Moved there just before the major flood in "93" Flood, Truck, Iowa. Must be some kind of connection. LOL Until next time. Be safe👍 Be well.👌 God Bless🙏
Tip one, HEI conversion( I just tie a new 12 ga wire in at firewall connector by passing inline resistor) and , dial in 14-16 initial timing, get curve kit, leave stock weights and make sure of no worn parts. Then hook up vacuum advance to manifold vacuum. You may need to tweak initial up or down couple degrees. Depending on engine size and condition and cam the Vortec can handle initial timing from 12 -18/19 degrees. Stock weights/light springs give fast enough curve to get better power and mileage.
Garfield was ready and raring to go back on the road! Unidentified loud noises are always interesting, but maybe it was just something on the road! I'm sure the next road-trip project will be better at breaking down! ;D
LOVE THIS!! Have a 72 C10 3 on the tree great truck, has Sears tires still on it! Thanks for the awesome work y'all doing! Also SBC swapping a 78 280z 2+2 LOVE the DATZEN! gave me so many ideas!! You guys slimming my checkbook down!!
I grew up on these second gen C series GM pickups. My first vehicle was a 1968 GMC 910 with a 250 6 cyl and 4 spd transmission just like your C20. I also owned a 1971 C20 Cheyenne with a 350 4bbl and close ratio 4 spd. These trucks never go out of style. You made a good decision buying this one!
Watching this video again sure brings back old memories. 4 wheel drum brakes, pedestal style accelerator pedal, manual steering and 4 spd with bull low un-synchronized first gear. Feel free to ask questions about any another historical data from this generation of GM trucks.
Not bad for a truck from IOWA.....I had a 1994 Z71 Chevy that the rust from years of road salt/brine exposure. Old fleet trucks like that one were well maintained...on top of the fact that they knew how to build trucks then..unlike now. I'd say just keep it as-is, clean her up a bit, and keep the rust and paint chips....it adds character.
All I can say is dude, To have a Lady thats into the car scene and be totaly beautiful on point and excitable towards hotrods. My guy, You are the luckiest rascal alive. I love your channel, keep it right and tight. wow man . I hope the build is as sweet as the others, evolve! will meet you one day. Smitty 1300
I was a paint & body man for thirty six years. For the last few years I was building hot rods and pro street cars. Would love to get my hands on that truck. I love it.
Nice find! Truck looks really cool. Doesn’t look like the original engine though. Noticed the center bolt heads. I had a 69 C10 with original engine and drivetrain, after fresh fluids and brakes I drove it from Las Vegas to Kansas City with absolutely no issues. Goes to show those things are unbeatable. Stoked to see what you guys do with that.
I have a 68 gmc, c20. With a small block. Best truck ever. Towed with it for years. Even towing the trailer loaded with everything from cars to tractors loaded with weights for tractor pulls. 1st gear is pretty much useless. I pretty much always stated in 2nd even with a loaded trailer. 1st is a granny low with no synchronization. Enjoy the truck they are great. Wish I could still drive mine. The cab is so bad from the rust belt I live in, it needs a complete new floor and cab mounts, rockers panels, and cab corners.
More on this car!! Love CarfieldTheCar ❤️. I wish I could have a truck as well. Good memories on my square body 2wd 1980 Blazer 🥰 what an overview and relaxed ride. This looks very similar from a ride point of view.
I’ve done those fly across country buy a old vehicle drive home well that was the plan first made it from AZ to New Mexico where I hoped on a plane and the blazer got a ride on a car hauler .. second one made it all the way.. love the adventure.. great vid
That's a neat old truck. 1st gear is non-synchro. You only need it for steep hills or when the truck is heavily loaded. I owned two different trucks with that transmission in it. Generally all you need to do is start on low, shift up to 2nd, and then shift to high. You can't shift these old transmissions in a hurry, but they are practically bullet proof. Looks like you have a lot of clutch disc left as well. SCORE!!
A bottle of cheap whiskey, a package of burger and a fun night with friends versus throwing away $20+ gambling. I’m totally with ya there. Never got it. Loved Garfield! Another awesome video.
1st Gear is granny gear. You only use it if you're pulling something really heavy for start-outs or short distances. And if the truck is geared like mine was, 4:56...your small block would be spinning at 3000 to 3200 RPM at 60MPH with 16" tires.
Such a great life, you buy awesome truck , it’s perfect , your dogs cute , a car show happens in your front yard , magic appearing snacks and camping with Emily. Great music and editing guys.
Steve Bo If only it were that easy!!! Lol! You forgot the roughly 6k we spent buying the truck and driving cross country! Lol! The dog is real cute, we agree!
@@flyingsparksgarage wooooo 6 k for the c-20...... i guess not too bad...... esp,. how clean & ready it was basicly for u all to drive to tx.,............
Jamie Round The truck is worth that but it was half of that! I’m calculating all our expenses total to make the trip and produce the episode! Initial purchase price, fuel cost for Wayne’s truck there and back, Garfield’s fuel burn, hotels and we actually paid an editor to cut this one- which is super exciting! Certainly, freeing up my time for other tasks in the biz isn’t free though! 🙏🏼😇 It’s all good, just have to invest in the dream ♥️ it’s why we appreciate each of YOU so much!
@@flyingsparksgarage Emily... sometimes you just make me laugh. At about 8:06, I had to laugh when you stomped on the breaker bar to tighten the lug nut, "Man, she wrenches like a GIRL!!" (Just teasing!!) ;^)
Turning Rust style shop truck with a crazy lumpy cam big pipes air bags whitewall tyres and all the old school shop logo's and then use it for all the car events you guys go to. I has all the space you will ever need for your tools and gear just put a slide out canvas roof with sides on it and you have a work bay/tent where ever you go. Hehe Gar-field unit 1....!
I'm a woman, and I love getting dirty and working on old vehicles! You guys rock! Wish I could get some mad respect like you do being a woman. I would love to get me an awesome hoodie with your logo on it to support you, while advertising at the same time! I love to see women gear heads! A very rare thing indeed!

Aussie Chris Thanks Chris!!!!! We had so much fun!
I can't tell you how happy it made me to see that boy adjusting the steering gear. I tell people to do that and get blank looks.
Really nice to see a wife who has a lot of intelligence and can appreciate the quality and the value of a nice truck her husband bought for her and she looks like she really likes it way to go girl.
You guys have much better luck with wheel bearings 😁. Great EP!
After seeing project Garfield yesterday, then rewatching this episode.... it’s amazing how much different it looks now. What a fabulous truck!

I had a 1970 K-20 292 with the 4 speed box it was a awesome truck wish i had it today !
I love your truck! Emily handles that stick shift like a boss! 67 to 72 chevy's are awesome
Emily drives stick better than most- me included! Roxy and Zen are both manual.
Good job John , finding the C20 for them!

Great video, love that truck! I had a ‘72 C10, was my dads old truck. Lot of memories, still my all time favorite body style of any truck!
your vids are addictive! your enthusiasm is infectious! You guys just keep me smiling, plus your rides are badass, too
Very cool!
Sweet truck you guys! thats a killer buy! looking forward to seeing what ya'll do with it!
I love the constant positive attitude
Thanks for sharing another adventure. Simply delightful. Oh,... dig the truck!!,

Very cool ! " Gas cap"...
excellent truck cool funky yellow . Had a bunch of these years bulletproof trucks
Neat video! What more could you ask for, cool vehicles and cool people all havin a good time. We have a terrier in our family too, so that just makes it all the better. Enjoyed it!
Dad has a 70 and it runs just as good. Takes the same pumping as yalls does to start! See y'all in Texas hopefully one day.
I like the fact your show is real so keep it up. It appears you didn't sell out like road kill which is good.
I just remember the last time I saw 16.5" tires was my 1971 Cheyenne.
a very cool truck indeed!!
sort of reminds me of rescue 51 from the show Emergency in the 70's!
Smitty 1300
I absulutely love your channel. I love the old school wngines with points condensors. I am not so much into the newer engines. Be safe. Peace.
Great old shop truck with a toolbox.I gave my sister my 68 C20 with mostly a 69 body. 4 speed manual 327.
I was a paint & body man for thirty six years. For the last few years I was building hot rods and pro street cars. Would love to get my hands on that truck. I love it.
I found another one... DM me if you want it!
I just found you guys from going through old junkyard digs videos and I'm already so into your channel! Love it
Nothing like a good old no drama road trip/adventure, awesome episode :)
Good job and good truck Kids ! Happy building !
I loved it!!! Garfield is so good!!! I enjoyed the light hearted vlog-ish of this one! It was more of the adventure... love you guys!
Really great to see such incredible positive attitudes!
Love the video, just recently sold my 67 and 68 c/10 , gives me motivation to get another one
Keep Garfield as she is! It'll last another 50 years properly maintained as it seems to have all it's life👍
More on this car!!
SCORE!!
Good fun video, thanks, you guys made a lot of people very happy on that road trip!
Missed you guys.....😊😊😊
We use to have yellow 70 chevy truck. I think you can buy after market bed side and everything and make a bed.
I can hear Freiburger saying "No Way! It's Mint!"
Brian Mason same here!
Garfield in on the prowl. And on the road. Good find. Bit of TLC and it should be good. 👏👏🐯🍻
Guess the great can make it look easy. You create great content. Thanks.
