I would estimate that buying every single expansion for Marvel Legendary has cost me about £700 over the years. But for one game, on it's own, I did spend £120 on Gloomhaven. I have also spent a few Bob getting everything for the Firefly board game and that one I freaking love to death and I want to play it more often but I need a bigger table.

Some of the antique kaya gobans are difficult to put a price on because they simply aren't sold anymore. The trees they are made from take around 700 years to fully grow, and the government of Japan no longer allows them to be cut down. Prices in the range of 70k USD aren't unheard of, and boards with historical significance could easily go for hundreds of thousands.

I love how this went from beautiful to hideous, from the "sweet spot" of excess with 3d Catan, Kingdom Death Monster, and other collectors editions, to hideously gaudy with solid gold monopoly and that abomination of a backgammon set. Where is your "line in the sand" for what's beautiful versus what's gross? Mine is at that Go set. Simplicity in construction, beautiful in design, ridiculous in price. Everything after that just stops looking appealing.

@@bobthebox2993 i mean, at least the crazy material was used more skillfully at the pearl chess set than at the backgamon one... i prefer more classic looking chess sets, but i didn't find that one ugly though. clue was surprisingly bad.
and two or three of the games are so expensive because they are historic. like that 3 in 1 set from the 1600s.sure, not todaysaesthetics necessarily but it's a historic artefact and as such has a special value. it belongs in a museum
or the atlantis monopoly. is it beautiful? not really. but it's a piece of boardgame history and as such should be expected to have a very, very high collectors value. if i could chose one of these to own ans not be allowed to sell, i would honestly pick this piece of paper. it's the start of one of the biggest game franchises in history.

I would love a list of games that the visually impaired are able to play. We use to be a board gaming family but with my mothers failing eyesight she has a much harder time keeping up. We are able to pay game like Dixit and even Mysterium. We just focus on the larger image instead of the smaller details.

The most expensive board game I own (which I have had since the late 90s?) is the Gold Edition of the Star Wars Trilogy Trivial Pursuit game! I brought it over from the USA on my holibobs to Orlando, and still got it safely stored! :)

I have the Settlers 3D one... in perfect condition... Perhaps I should just sell it. I could use 1500 bucks... :D

Sell it now, and then you 300 of those bucks to buy the new version of 3d catan which is the same minus the chest. That chest is still holding its value.

My most expensive board game? Are we talking OVERALL value? Like, including all the money dropped for upgrades and expansions? Or just the base game itself?
All expansions + other stuff? Marvel United - $580 USD for the base game, the original ultimate bundle, and the X-Men United and everything.
Just Base? Twilight Imperium 4. $110 USD.

Blackstone Fortress is my most expensive game. Complete with all expansions would be in the Kingdom Death ballpark (around 2-4k). Commission painted versions, 3D printed terrain and/or additional miniatures will add increase that price.
I was lucky to get the base game cheap for a good used condition version, later bought some dirt cheap mint condition base game boxes that missed only the miniatures. The expansions I bought for either discount retail or via eBay. In total I've probably spend 400-600 on the including extra miniatures and 3d printed terrain over the years. Only missing 1 card expansion (Endless Peril).
I will likely wreck this potential investment when get to painting the miniatures ;)

Biggest board game expenditure I ever made was spending 300+$ on the dungeon expansion of Talisman. That thing is a PITA to find.

It's hard to imagine a more compelling argument in favor of a maximum wage. If someone has enough disposable money to buy a $5,000,000 backgammon set, then THEY HAVE TOO MUCH MONEY.

    Cthulhu wars:
    Base Game - 200
    Faction expansions - 350 (50 x 7)
    Maps (3 to 5 players) x 5 - 200
    6-8 player map expansions - 155
    High Priest expansion - 20
    Total: 945
    But wait, there is more!
    Cosmic Terror Pack - 30
    Ramsey Campbell Horrors 1 & 2 - 60
Dreamlands surface monster expansion - 25
Dreamlands underworld monster expansion - 25
    Great Old One Pack 1, 2, 3 & 4 - 105
    Azathoth Neutral expansion - 50
    Nodens - 25
    Neutral unit identifiers - 30
Beyond time and space - 25
    Masks of Nyarlathotep - 40
Battle dice for all factions (200 dice) - 75
    Grand total: 1,435
There are a lot of other expansions, mostly cosmetic, like a glow in the dark Cthulhu figure that doesn't effect gameplay, I chose not to put them here, but if you include those it would put it over the 1,500 for that Catan game. That said, it's a lot of stuff.
And no, I don't own all of that. More of it than I'd care to admit, but not *all* of it.

My most expensive tabletop game (it does have a board of sorts, but unsure if it qualifies, you decide) must be 'Doctor Who: The Time of the Daleks', once all expansions have been added I estimate the final cost to be somewhere around £100-£120.

My most expensive board game is my copy of Battlestar Galactica, which I got after it had gone out of print.
Copies of it usually go online for upwards of £300; I got mine in an eBay auction for 90 quid.
