hii Gary, 3 questions: you said uv ray, do you think a bit of indoor man made uv ray a few minutes per day will help to deal away with molds and stuff ? because bring them in and out for me is difficult, because i dwell in apartment with no balcony. 2nd question: it is now 15 deg C outside ind day time (today is sunny) and at night it is 7 deg c and early dawn, it is 2 deg C. the temperature here in spring is like this fluctuate like this, a couple of day they will reach 0deg C before dawn.. i can't bring my seedling day in day out.. because my allotment is not near at where i m staying.. and there is no electricity at my allotment.. can i sow lettuce and radish and pok choy in cool frame ? and let it be over night at such temperature swing ? or with such high day temperature, can i put my zucchini seedling in the cold frame ? i in need of the answer.. because i don't want to lost them all.. 3rd question: the seed pack stated, germination temperature is between 8 deg c to 15 deg C for a leafy vege.. but since my temperature is fluctuating so much and not consistent... when then should i sow the seed ? because i never have a temperature that is constantly above 8 deg c.. it would be in month of May already, only then i will have a little bit of more stable temperature.. by then i won't be able to plant much already. i am refering to uk weather. thx andrew
I really enjoyed your video about Starting seed basics and I have one question that I cannot find an answer to on You Tube. My question is , after the seeds germinate, when do stop using the grow light while you are transitioning plants outside and bringing them back inside?

I love this video Gary, very informative, my only concern is I don't wanna start with that many seeds and lights and most of us rookies not gonna plant that many seeds at once so i just wanna start with 2 piece of 6 cells trays, 1 for red bell peppers and another one maybe tomatoes or strawberries and just see if I don't fail with them then I'm gonna expend and grow more veggies, but it would be way overwhelming for me to grow that many veggies at once especially cause they all need different amount of lights, different soil etc. So my question is how do I get a smaller light to germinate my seeds for only 1-2 piece of 6 cell trays? And what about the plastic material, is it food grade safe? I don't want chemicals leaching in my seeds /food while I germinate them so is any food grade trays available?
The 4 foot shop lights are best and cheapest. Smaller lights actually cost more. The trays are for seed starting. Nothing, just FYI, would leach or cause issue for simple seed starting. Thanks! Hi, thanks for the video. There are others saying we need to let the seeds germinate in the dark, and give it light only after the first true leaves come out.
Nah thats terrible. If you miss the germination by a day, you get lanky plants. I have always germinated in full light for decades. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & Mor

Gary regarding the question concerning whether light is needed prior to germination....while it is true that the overwhelming majority of seeds do not need light prior, some, notably Begonias and Monarda (bee balm)....do need light in order to germinate.

Very helpful video. I was kind of hoping you mentioned something about flower seedlings does that rule of thumb the same thing as for vegetables. Also I did not mention when is the best time to start seedlings either flowers or vegetables that would have been great to but none the less you have great videos I enjoy them thank you and have a good day.
So the seed starting time just varies to greatly. And then your zone impacts the starting time. So anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks. Ill try and talk more about it later. Another thing people may need to know in regards to using a timer and a power strip is plug your timer directly into the wall outlet and plug all you light system into your power strip. Yes, this was a good video. I'm not sure what to do when I plant a variety of seeds and they might have a large number of days to germinate. Do the seedlings get separated from the ones that take longer, so the seeds are being lit by the lights, at the correct number of inches. For instance, the Zinnias are germinating sooner than the sunflowers.
It is good to move the cells around to build trays of those that need more light to germinate still. The slow germinators. If you dont have space for that, dont over worry about it. Hello Gary! We could sure use your advice! Our family marathoned all your videos and jumped into seed starting with both feet (thank you so much, we love them!). I felt pretty well prepared...that is until nearly ALL of our seeds decided to germinate in under 3 days! It was an unexpected surprise. I thought we'd have weeks until the next stage. Now I'm frantically trying to figure out how I'm going to take care of these plants until we can put them outside, lol. I was trying to time it so they'd be just the right size to beginning acclimating them and keep them outside when our outdoor season began...but now I fear I'll have good-sized plants on my hands before then. I'm praying my larger grow lights come in the mail before the seedlings get leggy...I'm worried about this. I hope we don't lose the whole lot due to legginess. I'm in Austin, TX Zone 8b. Realistically, how soon do you think it will be safe to transfer them outside?
Thanks for watching! Seeds can really take off. If your day temps are decent. You can give seedling an hour of light or so a day and start the acclimation early. Not a lot but let them get hit by the sun. When acclimated as long as you dont have frost, any time. Warmer nights are better for tomatoes and peppers but cool weather crops do fine. Hi. Great video. I’m a beginner in planting herbs indoors and arugula as well. I got a green house from Amazon the kit and planted my arugula and parsley and oregano and summer savory and my arugula sprouted after about two weeks. Others are coming more out too. When do you plant these herbs in pots as it will be my indoor garden in what I have a mini green house for all year round. If it’s possible would be great to hear back. Much appreciated and your videos as well. 🪴🌱

Great video Gary! I will have to disagree with you about granular organic fertilizer. The vast majority come with beneficial microbes that will break down the insoluble nutrients. Also, there are some soluble nutrients in those granules available to the plant while the others are broken down. I have found that plants started with a bit of Espoma biotone starter plus grow healthier and more care free. Also, the fungus you see growing on the soil is the beneficial kind that comes with the fertilizer. It will help protect the plant against harmful fungi like damping off. In fact, there are some seed starting soils, like the Coast of Maine one, that are "living soils" with all sorts of beneficial microbes. When compared with seeds started in sterile mix with a little added organic fertilizer, the plants grown in the Coat of Maine are much healthier and resistant to harmful forms of fungi and diseases in general.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) no, thank YOU 😀. I've never seen anyone take this on as thoroughly as you have. You are surely responsible for so many people growing their own food. Awesome job!
You made a good point with the biology/biozyme that is added. But I think that would be a good subject for a separate video on making the potting up mix for your transplants.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) looking forward to it! I'm a big fan of yours. Learned to garden a few years back to provide produce for a group home and been obsessed with it since. Can't believe I hadn't tasted a real tomato until my 30's. Anyway, wish I had your videos back then to get me started. Your doing a great thing here!

Thank you Gary, and yes I did subscribe! I really got a lot out of your video last night. I took those covers off and put the light I bought 3” over them. It’s one of them LED ULTRAVIOLET 8 red 1 blue ratio. They’re only 24 pods so one light suffices. If I’m successful, I’ll plant more next year!

Gary- I found this channel and love it. Question: I've already started most of my seeds. I've got about 170 cells that are doing great and getting ready to be transplanted to a larger vessel. I saw on this video that you suggest people boil water and pour over their soil. In my case, what would you recommend since my seeds are already started? This is my first 'from seed' garden. Thanks!

Bill Baron yes I found it hard to edit my episodes on seeding to the point I didn’t upload it
hii Gary,
3 questions:
you said uv ray, do you think a bit of indoor man made uv ray a few minutes per day will help to deal away with molds and stuff ? because bring them in and out for me is difficult, because i dwell in apartment with no balcony.
2nd question:
it is now 15 deg C outside ind day time (today is sunny) and at night it is 7 deg c and early dawn, it is 2 deg C. the temperature here in spring is like this fluctuate like this, a couple of day they will reach 0deg C before dawn..
i can't bring my seedling day in day out.. because my allotment is not near at where i m staying.. and there is no electricity at my allotment..
can i sow lettuce and radish and pok choy in cool frame ? and let it be over night at such temperature swing ?
or with such high day temperature, can i put my zucchini seedling in the cold frame ?
i in need of the answer.. because i don't want to lost them all..
3rd question:
the seed pack stated, germination temperature is between 8 deg c to 15 deg C for a leafy vege..
but since my temperature is fluctuating so much and not consistent... when then should i sow the seed ? because i never have a temperature that is constantly above 8 deg c.. it would be in month of May already, only then i will have a little bit of more stable temperature.. by then i won't be able to plant much already.
i am refering to uk weather.
thx
andrew
I really enjoyed your video about Starting seed basics and I have one question that I cannot find an answer to on You Tube.
My question is , after the seeds germinate, when do stop using the grow light while you are transitioning plants outside and bringing them back inside?
Being new to this, I've probably watched close to a hundred videos and your videos are the only ones that have answered all my questions. Great job!!
Thanks so much. Thats my goal

My local nursery recommended fertilizing the seeds , I'm grateful that I watched this. I'd never heard of fertilizing that early. Thanks for your good information. It's disappointing to have someone who should know ( nurseryman) give poor information
You just really want LOW level of NPK in the seed mix. You can always add more.

Hi, thanks for the video. There are others saying we need to let the seeds germinate in the dark, and give it light only after the first true leaves come out.
Nah thats terrible. If you miss the germination by a day, you get lanky plants. I have always germinated in full light for decades.

Gary regarding the question concerning whether light is needed prior to germination....while it is true that the overwhelming majority of seeds do not need light prior, some, notably Begonias and Monarda (bee balm)....do need light in order to germinate.
Thanks

Great video Gary! That last tip for hardening off was perfect! I started seeds indoors on 1/30 so my brassicas are up, i wondered if they were too tender to get a quick drink of sunshine. I’ll set a timer because I always forget
Yep let them get use to the sun
Thank you so much .. that was really good advice for me as beginner in planning .. God bless you🙏🏻
Glad to help. I have a whole seed starting series on my channel I did in 2020, this year.

All seeds, herbs flowers and vegetables follow the same principles.

Another thing people may need to know in regards to using a timer and a power strip is plug your timer directly into the wall outlet and plug all you light system into your power strip. Then plug power strip into timer so they will all come on and turn off together. Just a tip I figured out that really works well.
Thanks!

I cant argue with that. Fair enough. I use worm casting for the reasons you state. Thanks.
Gary, why the covers for seeds and when do I remove them?

Thank you Gary, and yes I did subscribe! I really got a lot out of your video last night. I took those covers off and put the light I bought 3” over them. It’s one of them LED ULTRAVIOLET 8 red 1 blue ratio. They’re only 24 pods so one light suffices. If I’m successful, I’ll plant more next year!
Thanks Gary! All mine are in!😀😊

Loved it as usual
Gary- I found this channel and love it. Question: I've already started most of my seeds. I've got about 170 cells that are doing great and getting ready to be transplanted to a larger vessel. I saw on this video that you suggest people boil water and pour over their soil. In my case, what would you recommend since my seeds are already started? This is my first 'from seed' garden.
Thanks!
