bro, hate the sin, love the sinner if you're one of those faux-christians who thinks that the only rule of faith is 'durrrrrr be nice or something' then eat shit
Agreed, 100%. It's disgusting how many people are so entitled because they believe. I love God, but not so much his fans. Still, God tells us to love your enemies, so
Now this is a god which I am willing to believe in. Not some guy who's always watching over your shoulder and keeping tabs on everything that you do, but someone who made us and just watches passively. Also, "no one entertains the thought maybe God does not believe in you" and "maybe life on Earth could be Heaven" are two of the best quotes from ANYTHING I've ever read, heard or seen.
If you seriously believe that God created the universe and watches passively but does not intervene in the life of you are others, that is an actual belief. It’s called deism. Deism is more of a philosophy than a religion, though.
Bo's way of throwing absolute power and gravity into comedy. He demands people think and I love that about him. He is my absolute favorite "comedian" since George Carlin. Their ability to tell it as it is and give the realist perspectives fucking ever is unmatched.
The “Maybe God does not believe in you” line always sends chills down my spine. Such a beautiful sentiment, and the aggressive change in pace on the piano drives the gravity of it all perfectly.
ye, well...xD Maybe there's a thought behind the second part of your statement, but he definitely is ridiculing religion as well. He ridicules everything.
You can make God be whatever you want him to be. It’s easy if you try, but he’s only your god though. Edit: strong emphasis on “he’s only your god” meaning this god of yours if not actually real.
@@nix5160 yeah they realized quite quickly that this song, while still surely has some funny quips, was burnhams more serious songs about how people need to chill the fuck out. Stop trying to find love from some thing that may or may not be real, and love your fellow humans.
I’ve heard this song literally dozens and dozens of times but the line of “I created the universe, ya think I’m drawing the line in the fuckin’ deli aisle?” still makes me laugh every time
EXACTLY!! As he said “who needs a thousand metaphors to figure out you shouldn’t be a di-?” It’s really sad to see that some people only are good people because they fear hell. Not because they genuinely want to be good.
I know this song is mostly a joke, but that certain disdain he added within "You're *_NOT_* my children-" at around 2:11 is actually fucking perfect I absolutely love that portrayal of God actually disgusted by the basic idea that we might have come from him
"...Maybe life on Earth could be Heaven. Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try? ...My love is the type of thing that you have to earn and when you earn it, you won't need it! I'm not going give you love just cuz I know that you want me to. If you want love, then the love has got to come from you!" These are some of THE most profound words I've ever heard! I literally shed a tear every time I hear it. Bo truly is in a class by himself!
You know its sad because these things are actually taught in church but people are too ignorant to hear it out. By the way I am not a believer I am just forced to go there. That's why I despise most of the people there because they always think they are wise to not fight or change and just believing in God itself or loving God only is letting them to heaven. Everyone just ignores these small details from Bible that make up so much for society. If they can't respect or love others at their standard but only love someone really outstanding like God, what makes us all think God will love his followers? It's the government all over again or basically saying I believe in Superman. Funny isn't it?
+em diar Yes, I have heard of Tim Minchin. And I enjoy his work very much. And while Bo and Tim may share a lot of similarities in their style of comedy, I find Bo's music more profound overall. But it's highly unlikely Bo will ever come close to Tim's piano playing ability. He's an absolute genius when it comes to tickling those ivories! I've commented before that a collaboration between the two of them would be absolutely epic! I'm sure they both were influenced by another great pianist satirist... the awesome Tom Leher!
+FOAD RIGHTNOW I love Tim's song if I didn't have you, he had some very profound lyrics really, but his clarity of speech causes alot of it to go unnoticed until after the third listen. I prefer bo, but maybe because I discovered and memorized him first. my aunt and uncle haven't heard of bo and I'm so excited about sharing his music with them:) I love being part of someone else's discovery of awesome
I used references to this in my C of E (Church of England) school talent show in my comedy act. The teachers were horrified but the students enjoyed it lmao
Probably because C of E is what it's known as colloquially, but the other 99% of humanity doesn't live near it, so they clarified for any potentially confused people.
Bo in 2013: Maybe life on Earth could be heaven. Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try? Bo in 2021: You say the whole world's ending. Honey, it already did. It's sad to see such an optimistic outlook on life shattered. Bo has really lost all his hope in humanity.
"You pray so badly for heaven, knowing any day might be the day you die. But maybe life on Earth could be heaven, doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try?" Genuinely the most powerful lyrics in a song I've heard in a while.
Grape Panta Subliminals It can, if people just chose to be nice to each other. The little things like a thank you already make the world a better place.
"If you want love then the love has gotta come from you." I needed this line in many contexts of my life, not just my spirituality. Thank you Bo. Thank you.
Slight correction: There is no "christian" god. Christians, jews, and muslims all believe in the same god. Therefore, If god exists (which i hope he does), he is not exclusive to one religion. And thats excluding all the other monotheistic religions that believe in a different singular god . Otherwise, good comment!
Guardian of the Hill he referred to the Christian god since 1) it’s the most widely adopted religion 2) simply “god” could refer to the other religions you didn’t reference? Sikhism, hinduism, animism etc etc
I'm a very devoted Catholic and at first I thought I was going to hate this song. Literally my second favorite Bo song (only beaten out by Sad because that always has me ROLLING)
The most powerful line (well stanza) imo has got to be "You pray so badly for heaven Knowing any day might be the day that you die But maybe life on earth could be heaven Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try?" like yes why not we try to be happy here instead of making other people's lives torture just because they may not follow similar beliefs?
This is the most closest one to my heart. I've been religious all my life (born catholic) and i grew up going to sunday schools all my childhood. And although i love the people there and i appreciate the precious memories, i sadly have not brought praying when i grew up. I always wondered in the back of my mind whenever the teachers would tell us to accept jesus so we can save ourselves from hell and go to heaven, if im really doing that and how do i know if ive done that already. I was so scared of the idea of going to hell so I prayed and prayed and TRIED to accept jesus in my heart (whatever the heck that even meant). But then i wandered off, discovered atheism, being agnostic, and different beliefs through the internet. I do feel much better now than before i guess. I stopped letting hell chain me. I can be a good person without having to worry about going to hell and only doing "right things" for the sake of going to heaven. I don't even anticipate heaven anymore anyways. Seems pretty boring now lol, ill just enjoy earth while im still here.
Thats always been my belief; we can choose to make this place Heaven, or we choose to make this place Hell. Unfortunately it feels like Hell's winning most days.
Humans have this obnoxious superiority complex. If someone doesn’t believe the same thing you do then there’s basically saying you’re wrong and that bothers them
I love the message of this song, it's genuinely something to live by. You can have morals without religion, just like how you can have religion without morals. But you should still have morals, not for some hypothetical god, but simply because it's the right thing.
"Maybe God does not believe in you" "But maybe life on earth can be heaven" "If you want love then the love's gotta come from you" These lines smacked me in the face with feels like holy shit that got deep
My favorite parts: “It’s pretty obvious, don’t fucking rape people. Didn’t think I had to spell that one out for ya” “I created the universe, you think I’m stopping at the fucking deli aisle?” “Maybe life on earth can be heaven. Doesn’t the thought of it make you want to try?” “If you want love, the love’s gotta come from you.” Such good lyrics. You are a true artist, Bo!! So glad I discovered your genius!!!!
I don't want to get all theological, but in the history of humanity rape hasn't always been so obviously wrong. For example, in antiquity rape was seen as just another spoil of war and completely justifiable. Regarding the pork, Jesus already said 2000 years ago "A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.", so I think Bo is agreeing with Jesus here.
@Dan. Jesus said that but in context he was definitely not taking about unclean meat such as pork. He was telling the Pharisees that the ritual washing of the dishes they were doing and criticizing the disciples for not had no bearing on anything spiritual and was not biblical. He never ate unclean meat and never said it was okay. It’s why in mark those words (thus declaring all meats clean) are italicized. It’s not original text and is an interpretation and an incorrect one.
As a ex-muslim the pork part was my favorite. Even when i was a child i was thinking " doesn't god have anything better than writing list for consumable animals?"
I always thought this was due to the fact that hogs/pigs carried disease and the food safety back then obviously wasn't the best. It wss therefore labeled unlcear.
@@6tuf85dyfu Might be, but there's nothing divine about that interpretation. 600 years before Islam Jesus already said: "A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.", and I don't think food safety was any better in those times. If anything it was even worse. Today we have food safety and we can eat whatever we want, which makes Jesus words true and timeless, Jewish law obsolete, and Islam just a bad copy of old texts.
I had the same discussion with my friend a year or so ago He used to live with his grandparents in Saudi Arabia and never ate pork but he is a Norse pagan and one day I just looked at him and went "Why don't you eat pork? You like breakfast sausage but not other pork stuff." His response was religion, to which I came back with "Ok... But you're Norse pagan right? Do you realize how many pigs the Vikings probably ate?" The look on his face when that clicked 😂 needless to say he eats pork now without feeling bad
"No one entertains the thought that maybe God does not believe in you." "Maybe life on Earth could be Heaven." "If you want love then the love's gotta come from you." Some of the most powerful lines I've ever heard.
I went to Bo's recent show in San Jose, and when he played this song, virtually the entire audience (mostly young adults) sang it along with him, word for word. A lovely and heart-warming moment. I had goose bumps.
How did you take out some of the other curses? I’ve been thinking about trying to do a cover at school but can’t think of lyrics that are appropriate but still funny
I believe in God , I'm religious and I love this song , the part of "maybe life on earth could be heaven" it really has a lot of sense and he points out a lot of real things that are true .
This is so good it doesn't even need commenting on. "You can eat pork because why the fuck would I give a shit?" Hysterics every time I heard that line!!
I was raised primitive Seventh Day Adventist, they too taught me pork was a sin. When I was 10 or 11 I ask my dad, "why would we worship a God that would send a hungry kid to hell for eating a ham sandwich" I think that is when my faith cracked and fell apart latter in life.
Just about anything can be a religion. Including the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Their leader (I forget his name) wore a colander as religious headgear in his driver's license photo.
Have some empathy. Some people were abused by the church and the idea that God isn’t happy with the church makes us feel better. I see so many people in the comments going “Ha ha ha what the heck is religious trauma that’s so funny you’re so stupid, you have ptsd lolololol” Maybe you should think before you make fun of someone
George Kaftan The flaws of the people following a religion does not guarantee the flawlessness of the religion itself. The people following Christianity AND Christianity can both be flawed, as they are not mutually exclusive. I am claiming that they are both flawed, as there is no such thing as flawlessness.
The change of mood in this song is just amazing. One moment you're making everyone laugh, the next you're making everyone shut up and take in the message.
Those last few lines really hit hard. “My love’s the type of thing you have to earn and when you earn it, you wont need it. I’m not gonna give you love just ‘cause I know that you want me to. If you want love then the love has gotta come from you.” This is such good advice for believers who feel lost and are constantly looking up to the sky asking, “Why?” When you have searched for love that means something to you, then, you will truly realize you don’t need meaningless love from someone who isn’t even in your daily life. At that point, you will be content.
@@pedrosso0 God does exist, He’s very real. Capitalizing the G is the only way to refer to God, it shows respect. Hopefully you repent and let Jesus Christ into your heart one day, He wants to save every single one of us, no matter our sins. Wish you the best ❤️

"But no one entertains the thought that maybe god does not believe in you" why is this so profound, like how is Bo like the first person to ever think of this
bo isn't the first person to think or say it. even within the highly religious circles of the world, the idea that "god isn't going to save us from our problems" is a long-standing ideal. buddhism's degenerate age of dharma is a good example.
I'd say he's up there, Carlin is definitely my number one, even though I feel like he comes off as a boomer from time to time. Carlin blazed a trail and it's a shame that so few people are like Bo Burnham, carrying the torch.
@@jujuandjesus Too many standup comedians these days are right wingers, or at least, act as useful idiots for the right by parroting their talking points even if they see themselves as politically neutral (like Dave Chapelle and Andrew Schultz). It's refreshing to find an edgy comedian who actually leans left and isn't afraid to show it. Bo Burnham and George Carlin understand that comedy isn't "just jokes" and can actually push or perpetuate political narratives, intentionally or not. That's why Carlin said he was careful not to punch down on minorities while Bo often highlighted ongoing inequalities between privileged and marginalized groups.

But it's highly unlikely Bo will ever come close to Tim's piano playing ability. He's an absolute genius when it comes to tickling those ivories! But maybe life on earth could be heaven
Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try?"
like yes why not we try to be happy here instead of making other people's lives torture just because they may not follow similar beliefs?

@@dollykumo2959 Wait I did shit that sounds like me
I don't want to get all theological, but in the history of humanity rape hasn't always been so obviously wrong.
الله يهديك
I had the same discussion with my friend a year or so ago
He used to live with his grandparents in Saudi Arabia and never ate pork but he is a Norse pagan and one day I just looked at him and went "Why don't you eat pork? You like breakfast sausage but not other pork stuff." His response was religion, to which I came back with "Ok... But you're Norse pagan right? Do you realize how many pigs the Vikings probably ate?"
The look on his face when that clicked 😂 needless to say he eats pork now without feeling bad

I think it's the "once you earn my love, you won't need it" bit
Eh yeah
+Riley Hubbell "I'm not going to give you love just cause I know that you want me to. If you want love then the love is gonna come from you"
Alright.
+Riley Hubbell It wouldn't make sense to not believe in people since by his own words we are created in his image lolol. This bit was far better - knowing any day might be the day that you die but maybe life on earth could be heaven. Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth the try?.
"And i don't watch you when you slep" MAn:"WHOO"*The happines knowing nobody watches you when you sleep*
"But no one entertains the thought that maybe god does not believe in you"
why is this so profound, like
how is Bo like the first person to ever think of this
Ikr..
I don’t think he’s the first person to think this, but he’s probably the first person to actually say something about it
He's not, but he IS famous, so it's basically the same thing.
bo isn't the first person to think or say it. even within the highly religious circles of the world, the idea that "god isn't going to save us from our problems" is a long-standing ideal. buddhism's degenerate age of dharma is a good example.
The flood? No? Ok.
Holy shit I can’t believe this came out almost 8 years ago. This guy is the most thought provoking comedian I have ever listened to
yessss, he's so ahead of his time
He's basically the last true philosopher at this point. I dont know that Id even say he's a comedian anymore. Especially after inside.
WAIT THIS WAS 8 YEARS AGO?
This, I think, is the most realistic God view....
Oddly.
definitely
I really hope God is this cool.
He is. He’s great. Haven’t met him but looking forward to it
@@mabellinco157 how do you know if you haven't met him tho
@@whiteface513abandonedchann8 He did not kill us all even if we did soooooo much evil shit.
@@goldenhorse4823 oh wow, he didn't slaughter all of humanity mercilessly, but instead let us suffer through all the bullshit life has to offer for a presumed eternity. What a saint
Frankly I'd like to believe if he is real, then he's sort of like a guy playing Spore. He can't possibly keep track of and control everything. Believe me, I'd definitely imagine him to be a chill guy who doesn't judge unless you really should be judged. I just personally don't believe in him. But I think if I turn out to be wrong and he is real, it'd be neat if he's just another person like you or me and pretty chill
The song from god’s view is absolutely an incredible song. Funny, thought-provoking and empowering. Hat’s off, Bo!
"maybe God does not believe in you"...
Shit this just got real
Dude, it is crazy of all you can think of, Bo is genius
that bit always makes me feel awful but i dont believe in god at all hhhh
Makes you think and depressed.

God definetly doesnt believe in you
*you can make a religion out of this*
i thought that was and the day goes on by bill wurtz xD
*The sun is a deadly LAzEr.*
could definitely make a philosophy out of it and should make a way of life out of it
"No dont"
Wait no dont
finishes song
*God has left the server*
God has to think his life through after this deep shit.
God: "Shit, they found out."
Angel: "Found what out?"
God: ... *They're just a bad game of Sims*
Angel: fuck we gotta fix the simulation somehow
Or maybe... Bo is God?

dude honestly its so crazy looking back on these videos, as a person who deals with severe anxiety i really appreciate how you've talked about your problems. your new special definitely made me miss listening to all of your stuff. im glad you're back man, i hope everything works out for you. i hope one day i get to actually meet you. looking forward to the day you perform live again.
"But maybe life on earth could be heaven... doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try?" that's the stuff right there...
I'll drink that tea all day. Religious, or not that's truly the good shit.
@@Squeekysquid Exactly my dude. Exactly.
reminds me of something that would be in Imagine by Lennon for some reason.
"i created the universe, think im drawing the line at the fucking deli aisle?" i fucking died at that part
I couldn't breathe!!
+Jamestech SAME!
+Jamestech God couldn't work out why not eating meat is ethical. Another reason we shouldn't listen to him.
+Riley B from a scientific standpoint, pork is very contaminated before being cooked and processed due to the fact that pigs will eat almost anything. From a biblical standpoint, I believe it was more of a statement to protect people.
+Riley B Mate, if u look at what happens behind walls of a slaughterhouse, you will KNOW that eating meat is highly unethical.
One of the funniest songs I've heard. Somehow it's also the deepest, saddest, most educational and fucking beatiful too.
How does Bo do it?
Bo is a master and comedic genius. Truly one of the greats

Woo i know this is comedy show but that line hits harder than any lyric I've ever listened to.
This song is just really cool, like it starts out all humorous and you're like "wow, this is great," and then it gets all serious and you're like "oh, shit..."
best thing about this is how people shut up entirely after the half way mark
Well, the jokes kind of stopped around there.
RobotikEmpire No they kept going, but it was just really painful
Except people do laugh and cheer a few times after the half way point
Cause shit gets super real.
As a Christian, I do enjoy this song! I get the message of this wonderful art too!
Sadly, I did discover Bo Burnham 'too late.'

He made me think about my life
