Yep. I’ve been using Beatmaker 3 and Cubasis for several years now. I also know billboard songs and Grammy nominated songs that have been created only on the iPad or iPhone.

@@HammyHavoc Yep. Here's a few that come to mind: Henny Tha Bizness is a great one. He has a lot of videos showing how he uses it. Steve Lacy produced music for Kendrick Lamar on the iPhone. The Gorillaz made an entire album on the iPad. Madlib made an entire album on the iPad. Mannie Fresh, Just Blaze, Buckwild have all used the iPad (maybe not Cubasis specifically in any of those cases though).

The only thing I would recommend and suggest if you want to use Cubasis is use a stylus/Apple Pencil. It makes navigation and editing less frustrating. Newer iPads do support mouse and trackpads so that’s good too. When I’m on the go, sometimes I’ll take a 25 keyboard or Fishman midi guitar, a usb converter and usb hub to connect storage, dongles, midi transmitter, audio interface (maybe) and headphones. I recorded a client using his midi drums, vocals, fishman midi guitar for guitar and bass as well as keys. Went to my studio and transferred it to Nuendo. Cubasis is very handy, just need less fatty fingers.

It's something I've been looking into and it seems absolutely amazing (for those of us who like to write music with pen and paper.)

Have a Surface Pro 6, fanless, 8GB RAM, 128 SSD, Windows 10, you can get them for £600 in the sales, proper USB support etc, and I can't see anything turning my head away from that for portability and compatability.

My studio is built around my ipad (an ipad mini 5 actually) using cubasis3 and it works great. Looks funny with a small ipad, but runs everything (61key midi controller, akai mpd16 for drums using pro acoustic drum samples, steinberg interface, 1Tb external HD, and a usb mouse. All plugged into a powered USB hub). Using apps like isymphonic for orchestral parts. I’m on a budget, but the end product possibilities are anything but budget sounding. 😃

I scored music for an entire film (93 min) using Cubasis 2 and 3 on an iPad 5th gen. So, ya...it's a thing. Miroslav Philharmonik 2 is a must-have for scoring in Cubasis. It's incredible.

Good review. Recently got an iPad Pro 2020 myself, and just got Cubasis 3 as a companion app to my PC version (not a Mac and never will), but honestly this thing works quite well.
Although there are still some smaller bugs (very randomly tracks refuse to play - just close other apps then) which will be ironed out eventually. And you can import your stuff into your Mac/PC version (needs the Cubasis Importer setup, which is available on the Steinberg homepage), It replaces the mobile instruments with GM MIDI stuff on the PC, but that should be no big deal to change those quickly.
As for spitting out ideas, this seems to work great. Now I just need to think if I should invest into the Apple Pencil as well, as for instance moving the locators by fingers can be a small hassle.

Having just got it, I'll say str8 away that it's the most "DAW-like" app I've seen for iPad so far. Garageband would be great if they didn't impose the weird time restrictions. Idk how long my "song" (*koff koff* noise slab 🙄) is going to be. What am I, Kreskin? And it has DAW-like accoutrements; actual mastering limiters, mixer channels, EQs, compressors...I'm a hard Joe Meek poseur; gotta have my compressors... even tape/tube warmer-uppers. Can't wait to have time to go exploring it in depth. Sorry yakking too much. Music gear is fascinating all round, lol, makes me giddy. Greetings from Texas. 😁

Now, it is not fair to compare the onscreen keyboard of the iPad with your computer, that has several mechanical keyboards attached. To compare, either play the keyboard on the computer screen with your mouse, or attach you mechanical keyboard to the iPad! Also, it is not fair to compare the meager stuff within CuBasis to you desktop sound and effect library. To compare, better use better additional Apps as IAA or AU plugin, for example the piano App Ravenscroft 275 Piano and lots and lots of other fantastic stuff!

      Hi Guy,
I'm rather a fan of Staffpad.
It sounds way better than it has any right to - especially with some of the third party sample libraries. It's kind of spooky how it can sometimes render the music.
Personally, I find it so much eaiser to keep track of harmony and what's going on with the music with notation, so I write with more clarity.
It's also great for score study - I even use it along side a couple of your courses for the excercies.
It's just so portable and convenient I bought a new Ipad Pro for it. Best money I've spent in ages...
If you haven't yet tried it you should definitely give it a go. It isn't without the odd issue, but I think you'd like it.
You should definitely do a video on it....

  • @BeadsByAria

Good video but disappointing app that makes punching impossible to do with any efficiency. In short, every time your re-record over a new section (punch in or just doing it manually) the prior recorded layer (event) is kept active. Then on playback you get all re-recorded layers playing back at once, with no way to mute them, or exclude from mix down. This is one of the most bizzare oversights in design of a DAW I have come across. In short if you need to edit recordings by re-recording sections or doing punches, DO NOT get this app.

Also get a camera connection kit to allow to plug an audio interface and midi keyboard in, via a powered usb hub. Check out isymphonic for top orchestral sounds, and also notion for score writing which uses sounds sampled from the London symphony orchestra.
