      The pill can cause clots and all kinds of terrible things. I’ve used Accutane 2 times in my life. It’s a miracle drug for true acne sufferers - and I followed the instructions meticulously. I experienced profound happiness watching my acne disappear. I’ve never had acne since. Lots of medications have bad side effects.

    Having acne can also lead to depression tho. It can also lead to scaring and disfigurement. Accutane and birth control can be life changing for some people. No one who’s currently struggling with acne will tell you that they want “perfect skin”, just normal skin. They are trying to make it seem like some crazy teenagers risking their lives to get rid of some pimples. They are completely ignoring the fact that acne is absolutely detrimental to someone’s psychological health and the fact that the risks of developing a serious side effect is extremely rare. Of course all patients should be warned of the side effects and be monitored by professionals, but demonizing birth control and accutane is also really absurd.

      @ellie4601 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      It wasn't a great article at all - not sure why they spent the whole segment demonising medication... instead of the professionals who prescribed it and "cared" for these people. Maybe if they had done their research and looks for alternative options, this never would have happened.

    This is so sad, I used to have severe cystic acne, it wasn’t until I found all of my food sensitivities and eliminated those foods from my diet that my skin finally cleared up completely. I still have some of the old scars but after suffering with skin problems for most of my life, I’m so grateful to have discovered food sensitivities are often the culprit in skin issues. I know how difficult it is but please know you can clear your skin naturally! The dermatologists could never help me but the right foods did. If you’re reading this and struggling with your skin, just know someone cares and understands what you’re going through. I love you, now go and love your skin, you can heal, it’s in your power. 💕

    It's all the fault of the prescriber. Why? Because in my case the dermatologist spent 10 solid minutes walking through all the side effects of Roaccutane and at every monthly catch up, they did a mental health check because depression and suicidal thoughts are a known side effect. The pharmacist also heavily emphasised the side effects before handing over the medication.

      @NotLikeUs17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re 1000% correct. I’m a licensed nurse and one of my responsibilities includes patient education, reinforcing what the doctor has already gone over with the patient when starting new medications, treatments and/or other regimens. A good pharmacist will also go over the possible side effects and/or adverse reactions as well before releasing the medications. All of these stories are so tragic and quite simply could of even been avoided in a couple of cases had the MDs involved been more competent in recognizing the adverse effects of these medications. This is equivalent to someone having an anaphylactic response and the doctor doing absolutely nothing. Very scary.

      I am glad you are ok (for now) but also, as a heads up: there are studies that show that the serious permanent health effects (like IBD, joint disease, eye problems, sexual disorders, chronic fatigue, memory issues) can arise even up to 10 years after discontinuing the medication, even if you were OK (with no symptoms/normal bloodwork) when on it. In other words, this drug isn't safe for anyone. Even if you have no problems now, you're still at an increased risk of developing very serious health problems later. I know SOOO many people who this happened to (they took accutane as teens, were OK then, but 10-15 years later developed serious effects that do not run in their family). I hope it won't happen to you. But if you mysteriously start developing unexplainable side effects one day you may remember this comment!

    People always say there’s no connection between bad diet and skin problems, that’s not true! If you have pimples etc. please eat fresh fruits and vegetables; ditch fried food, junk food, sugary drink, pork, chocolate, and anything manufactured. Drink a lot of water and tea. Eat wholesome home cooking like baked fish, chicken and lean meat with boiled vegetables and potatoes with skin on. Use only olive oil, no margarine or butter. Add boiled beans for more fiber intake in your daily meals as side dish and to cleanse your intestines and colon. Eat culture food like kimchi, yoghurt or sauerkraut. Sleep at least 8 hours daily, quit smoking and drinking. Change pillow cover once or twice a week. Use tissue paper to dry your face, never use towel unless you use fresh ones daily. Don’t use any hair products or make up. Never touch your face with bare hands. Wash your face daily with gentle scrub beads and use for sensitive skin cleanser. Use day/night cream only on skin where pimple free. You’d be surprised how quickly your skin becomes smoother.

    When I was 15 I was prescribed Minocin for horrid acne. A month later I was fighting for my life & barely looked human. Took me years to fully recover. Then, another GP gave me the same drug under a slightly different name. All GPs dismissed my thoughts that the drug could have severely poisoned my body. They said it must have been caused by something else unknown. So, 2nd time I was assured I would not react. It was "impossible" apparently. Yet after taking only 1 tablet this time I reacted again. It was very bad. I was living alone & thought that night I might die. I was in agony & shivering & shaking all over. Thankfully, although bad, I recovered faster as I'd only taken one tablet 2nd time & was given a high dose of steroid treatment to counteract my reaction. A few years later my hormonal acne flared up again. No way was I going to take pharma tabs for it, so I researched & found a topical skin treatment called Dalacin. I asked my GP for that & was prescribed it. It worked very well & I never looked back. Not only that but after a while my acne disappeared.

So many over the counter medication are only safe about 60-70% of the time, but works to get rid of your symptoms about 70-80% so most people will take the medication without even thinking that it can harm them. For example ibuprofen which can increase your risk of stroke 3x and heart attack 2x, but almost no doctors will ever tell you that. I had severe acne all over my face and body for 8 years that no topical medications would help. I was very depressed and even suicidal because of how hideous I felt, being bullied for the way I looked, and having to struggle with painful acne all over my body for so long. Finally, I was prescribed this medication and it was the best decision I ever made. My doctor warned me about all of the side effects, I had to do monthly check ins & take a test to make sure I was doing okay, and I did monthly blood tests. Taking this drug made my depression and suicidal thoughts better, and I personally experienced zero side effects. In other words, this drug isn't safe for anyone! Even if he has no problems now, he's still at an increased risk of developing very serious health problems later. If I feel something's going on with my body, either I go to a doctor or go natural healing. When emotions are triggered the body reacts itself, add our lifestyle i.e eating unhealthily and emotional mental exhaustion = physical problems. Your body is telling you something that's why it's important to think why you're experiencing this. Think back and evaluate what's going on with you so you can properly seek for help from family or trusted people. Don't immediately trust a single doctor that you just met for the first time. Find other ones you feel comfortable and have more options for you to decided whichever you want is best for you.

People would tell me how lucky I was to have perfect skin. Almost overnight, my skin broke out into cystic acne. It was so bad my face hurt. People would very rudely stare at me. I wondered if they thought I was dirty when I was using very expensive cleansers twice as day so my skin was definitely not dirty. Some people would offer unsolicited advice. I spent thousands on different treatments and doctors. It blew my mind how differently people reacted to me because deep inside I would think "but I was that girl with perfect skin?? Don't they know that? Why are they treating me like this?" In my late 20's, my acne completely disappeared just as suddenly as it had appeared.

These included chemical peels, red light therapy, sonophoresis, laser therapy and micro needling. I would recommend getting a skin health plan with these treatments from a reputable skin clinic run by registered health professionals over taking medications, as it is safer even though it is more expensive. Topical retinoids are also safe and effective, these are essentially a topical version of accutane.
