Hi I’m Paul and I love the outdoors, especially wild camping in the UK
In this video I head out to the Long Mynd in Shropshire. I pitch my tent on a hill called Callow. it gets a bit windy but it was still a great little outdoor adventure.

Cheers for the shoutout Paul. Always a pleasure chatting with you. Tony
I might have to venture over to NZ and join you on a trip one day. No snakes or predators there 😂
I like the longer format, it's more escapism and slower pace which is relaxing. No ads? You seem to be exposing for the sky, which I think works really well.
Thanks for the feedback Freddie. I drop the exposure down half a stop. I like the colours it produces
@@PaulMessner Mmmm. Interesting. Must try.
you sir are the king of side cooking
Paul, your videos are what inspired me to buy a set of camping gear. Planning a wild camping trip into the lake district for the first time ever, in April. 22 years old and first time giving it a go
You can learn the easy way, or the hard way. I learnt the hard way. It's all very well to urge caution, but cooking that close to your flysheet can end badly, as it did for me in Knoydart some years back. It's astonishing how quickly a canister-top stove can transform itself into a gas-powered blowtorch that consumes your tent in seconds.
That gizmo for your pot is called a trivet, by the way.
Definitely long videos please your one of the few worth watching these days😊
"Come on you slippery thing, get in" ...Oooooh Matron 🤪
I knew someone would comment 😂
@@PaulMessner I couldn't help myself...I'm a scouser 🤪🤪🤪
Back to the old long form videos with 41 glorious minutes... Can't wait! For what it's worth your Rannerdale Knotts camp has got to be my all time favourite and the one that really got me into wild camping.
Thank you. Not everyone likes the longer vids so I'm experimenting to see how they perform. Hope you enjoy..
Definitely longer vids!
@@PaulMessner definitely love the longer vids 👍
When I pitch I high winds I generally chuck my rucksack inside the inner to keep it one the ground.
This video is a good example of what a 4 season tent is for. Despite not having the extra poles it still sat there without issue.
Another great video @Paul Messner
Good tip!🙂...
Love the longer format, feels relaxed and the pacing is far more enjoyable for me.
Longer vids please Paul. It feels more relaxing to watch.
Sat down with a cold Guinness and proper enjoyed your video.
Thanks so much for taking the time to film and share.
Mack and Maggie, Huddersfield
Glad you enjoyed it. Not had Guinness in ages
Loved the longer format Paul. Would love to see perhaps a two nighter. Also loved the idea of gear hacks. An idea you mentioned about the powdered egg, would you consider a series where you prepare and cook your meals at home then dehydrate them yourself and then review them when you're on a wild camp?
Keep up the good work you're smashing it! Can't wait to possibly bump into one day up the peaks haha
real wild camp
Nice MOD for your Stove would be 3 or 4 pieces of sturdy wire rod bent into a U shape and stake into the ground over stove feet to keep it from tipping over 👌
Long format for the win !!!!!
A beautiful documentary Paul - thank you
I love these videos they are brilliant. The way you filmed this I felt as if I was there also. The longer style of video and more in tent discussion really works. Thanks J
Just down get vids up to 3 hours!
I love the fact I have days off during the week and can often have the countryside to myself.
It's a game changer for me now. Weekends are way too busy
@@PaulMessner must be so much easier to film with no one around.
Have fun coming back (haha)!
Love these longer videos. Binge watching even more now ive broken my ankle
Great Video Paul . If you pop a t-shirt around the top of the sleeping pad then you can you can put the pillow inside and it will stop it moving around.
I appreciate you doing you!
Your an inspiration to a lot of people Paul . Keep going and good luck James
I have the same lighter, like a mini flame thrower...... new to my kit 2 weeks back, love it. SOTO...... Japanese I think.
I love a gadget 😂. This works a treat. Very impressed.
I love the sound of the wind on the tent… until bed time anyway haha
That steak looked spot on mate, and those skillets are superb pans 👏
It’s a really good pan. Nothing sticks. The steak was decent too 👌🏻
Back in the early 1990's for 3 years I used to camp most weekends and every holiday on the Long Mynd in all weathers to save the money the gliding club bunk house would have cost helping to pay my flying fees. I should have offered to test equipment because I was camping at least 100 nights a year and tents rarely lasted more than a year up on those hills. Your video brings back many happy memories of time spent in a tent on the gem that is the Long Mynd.
Nowt wrong with a longer vid 👍. The look on your face when you were listening out for horses in the night 😂
Got to get that Mobberley Ice Cream Company bobble on for one of these videos...LOL
Loved the longer video with more on pitching camp, gear, weather, etc. and before I started it I went and made a coffee with a bit of Baileys in it. The view was absolutely stunning. I like how you showed us the modifications you made to your gear. Looking forward to your next trip.
Yum, Glenn is my favorite, goes down so smooth
Great to see you adventuring in new areas, love the kit mod's. great stuff👍
More mods to come. It’s time that gear was how I want it 😂. New areas to explore in the coming months.
Never wouldve thought to use your spatula as a make shift cutting board allowing one to NOT scratch their pan. Splendid job ole chap!
Great video Paul, love the longer videos myself 👍🏻
Thanks for the feedback Marty. I’m experimenting at the moment
Loved this. Very relaxing to watch, esp the cooking in the tent bit!
That sky in the morning!!
It was lush
Great video as usual. Loved the time lapse, and your video colors are so vibrant. Those were some really strong winds, I admire your enthusiasm. I will be going on my second wild camp this weekend thanks to you and a couple others' encouragement.
Thanks. I thank the gopro for the colours. Where are you off camping?
@@PaulMessner I camp at a 2000 acre nature preserve 10 minutes from my house where I am a volunteer. The good news is that it isn't open to overnight camping, so I have it all to myself, but the bad news is that I don't have the amazing views that you have, lol. You and Jo are welcome to join me, but...I live in Texas. :)
Another great upload Paul thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Definitely love the longer format. You get a real essence of what it could be like out there yourself! Love the work, thanks so much! I'm an expat in Tokyo and these videos give me a great taste of home :-)
im a very simple things in life type person,im at my most happiest far away from crowds, and towns, you can't beat being in the countryside and places of scenic beauty;nature and wildlife are the best!😊
I remember training on the Long Mynd for the Cambrian March in 1975. Never been back but it does remain on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing.
Using a couple or three ground pegs makes the stove a lot more stable.
A nice, tight tent set up in a strong wind. Impressive! 👍
Thanks for this video, Paul.
Just a fyi... The cross poles aren't for wind, mainly for snow loading on scarp 1.
Yeah definitely the longer ones...gives us more of your wonderful knowledge...thoroughly enjoyed that Paul...big thanks from me and all of us for all of your time and effort..
Mate with the metal zipper that bangs around in the wind I put some heat shrink on anything that can rattle around in the wind
Really pretty spot and a nice little mod for the stove! I really enjoyed the length of this video. Feels like we are getting to experience the entire camp with you! However, I am a bit biased towards making longer videos lately myself. I also found it interesting to see how the scarp handled the wind without the additional poles so I appreciated you showing that! Great video Paul! ATB
Yep Paul taking time to smell the Flowers or perhaps sheeps douvers, lol! Thanks for taking us along and the highlighting of Shropshire! ⛺️👣🦉🍷🍷👍😎
I use a mossi head net to keep my pillow in place, weighs nowt and just lives in my pack, works a treat. Like the look of the windburner. Great video.
@25:20 without a doubt the best camera set up to feel the wind. Excellent
Always top content. Good video length nice to see the breakdown of gear in longer format. Thanks Paul 👍🏽
AWESOME VIDEO PAUL. THANK YOU FOR TEACHING US THE PERFORMING OF THE TARPTENT.
I'm very happy with the longer format - nice to sit back and have a cup of tea while just taking it in.
I suppose there's a balance to hit so probably it's a question of having some of each, all depending on the individual trip out.
Certainly a good test of the tent! Great to see you cooking again Paul!👍🏻
Short videos, long videos they're both brill. Keep doing what you're doing cos it's all good.
Love the long form videos Paul! Lets us get really immersed in the adventure.. Keep it up :)
I love watching AB camping I’d have no problem if you started making longer videos long or short they’re good either way👍
I enjoy all your videos mate. I don’t even do wild camping, but I’m getting tempted the more I watch! I find it useful learning about all the kit and your fair on reviews. Keep it up pal and you’ll reap the rewards. 👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
Thank you again.
Enjoyed the longer, slower pace with my dogs and 5am coffee.
Great vid Paul. Very much enjoyed the longer format. I think a few of these every now and then would be spot on.
Another cracking video Paul, keep up the good work.👍
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
time lapse looked awesome, please show more in future :)
Love watching! Find what you are doing really inspirational!
loved the longer format
Love the longer video looks like a great wild camp place, amazing views
I like the longer videos personally, when it's relevant. I suppose a 50 minute video on your favourite hiking boots would feel excessive, but when there's content to be put in the video, I'd always say put it in. I mostly watch videos whilst I'm working, they play on the TV like a bit of background entertainment. I'll rewind or pause when required, but a longer video always feels better to me.
Paul, as a snowed in "Mainer" here in Maine, USA (with close ties to the UK) I can say the longer videos are great. Makes me want to get out backpacking but winter isn't my thing as they say, so it is great to live vicariously through your videos until the snow here melts. I am glad that things with TH-cam seem to working out for you. Be well, keep making videos and living your hobby. Cheers!
Nice to see you venturing a little bit further South. The steak looked tasty.
ahh. reminds me of when I had to bale from cold pike in howling rain and wind because the scarp became too dangerous to stay in. i found it to be a good shelter in the right conditions but in wind with no poles its so flappy, noisy and starts to fold in on you. No problems with condensation and the room inside is great but the lack of sleep from the flapping made me get another tent.
Nice to see you in Shropshire, hope you enjoyed it, I'm sure you'll be back 👍
Another good camp Paul and good mods to your gear. Sharing tips and tricks makes things easier for everyone. ATB
I'm thinking I need to do more. Tired of searching the perfect gear when I should just tweak stuff as I want it
LOVED this video!! Brilliant stuff.
Awesome thanks Phil. Have a great week
Could do with modifying the canister holder to take a couple of pegs to secure it to the grass to stop it being top heavy :-)
Longer videos for me Paul, how can you not want more of a good thing? I watch Tony 's 3 hour plus videos, very relaxing, you feel like you've been on the trip with him 👍
Perfect time. Always thought the other ones was to short, not enough time to finish my pint😉
Yes, loving this longer video format!
Yay! Thank you!
Enjoy either format. Always great viewing Paul. Thanks Mate
Yes Paul
I like thr longer videos
Thanks for the feedback. More longer videos to come
Great video, as usual. We were up on the Long Mynd last Autum in a campervan. Great area.
....or a smaller ribeye 😂. Great video Paul. Perfect length to watch during my morning stint on the stationary bike.
I enjoy the odd longer video, it represents the experience of a night out or whatever a bit better sometimes. More immersive. Is there a better camping drink than a coffee with a dram in it? I don't think so! Top job again Paul. All the best, Pete.
I’ve not used my x poles with my scarp 1 yet. I’ve had it out in decent winds too.
I’m a kite surfer/windsurfer so a little more attuned to the strength/ direction of wind than normal folk. Tent handles owt you can chuck at it 😂.
I’m going to a scarp mod video as I think it may help a lot of people out. Keep your eyes peeled. 🤙
More of these long length vids please!
I found the longer format great for getting a real feel for being there. Excellent for a newby like me.
And being new to backpacking, it would be “gravy” if you included a kit list at the end. Loving all your content Paul. Many thanks 👍
Thanks for the shout-out Paul! Can't wait to get my Scarp back out.
Need to watch your videos again Dave. I’m going to have a go at some mods on the tent.
@@PaulMessner Well my videos will help you drop off at night Paul!. Yes and I am going to lengthen my corner guys! Race ya.
Shropshire's great! Do you have plans to explore more of the UK on your adventures?
Lots of new places on the agenda in the coming months.
MSR makes several pans that are compatible with the windburner, probably cost prohibitive if you already have jetboil/other system gear, but if you are starting with MSR you can get a system that works together
It was really nice to see a longer video from you. Always nice seeing people cooking when they camp and not depending on MRE.
Little tip. If your hip flask was finished you could have put some hot water in. Stuck it inside a sock or glove so as not to burn yourself and shoved it at the bottom of your sleeping bag for a while as a mini hot water bottle.
its great to see you on the long mynd, im heading their in about an hour for my first night in my scarp 1 which im excited about, defo the longer vids paul
Great place for paragliding in light westerlies. Hope to camp out and fly there over summer.
Great video! Loved a little wind on the tent, made me sleepy!
Spent many a happy hour there.
You videos are helping my mental health this week Paul. Thank you so much . I may get an overnighter on Dartmoor later this week too
Great video again Paul. Reminds me of a winter camp on Kinder without the snow and with much better food!! Like the longer format too.. like you say rabbit whole!!
Cheers Kev. I've had to watch it about 5 times during the editing stage. Mind blown
Really enjoyed that! As a Scarp owner for many years I would recommend pitching the ends as tight as possible before you guy out the sides/trekking pole guys
New to your channel, and love it. Between you and Pat Dickinson , a lay back view of the outdoor life I miss so much: Thanks
Love the longer videos Paul. From a personal point of view I feel like I'm just getting into a video then realise there's only a few minutes left. Great to see you in a new area not too far from me in Staffordshire and that you bought a Soto!
The longer format is great, it gets us really in depth with your adventures.
Have you considered getting your own dehydrator instead? It really opens up the possibilities when it comes down to food, although I'm always jealous when you crack a steak out!
Yeah carding mill and the long mynd are absolutely packed at weekends, good parking at carding mill though! lots of spaces
