I currently live with this as I was diagnosed just over a year and a half ago. I am one of the very small population who didn’t have it due to drinking. Rather I had cyclic vomiting syndrome. Thank you so much for your clear and concise explanation. I will definitely be checking back in when I need to remember the more scientific explanation of my memory loss and why I had to learn how to walk/use my hands all over again. Thank you so much for making this video. ❤

I have beriberi from gastric bypass surgery 15 years ago
My daughter who was diagnosed with this when she was 26 years old. Shes now 28. She had anorexia when she was in high school which caused the damage from the lack of vitamins etc then. She had a nasty nasty divorce and custody battle. To the extreme where she began drinking. And she became a severe alcoholic in a matter of a few months. In less than 6 months of drinking she was diagnosed. her left eye turned completely inward. She didn't even know who the President.😢was and she was sober then. She couldn't walk a straight line again sober. If her eye doctor hadn't seen the seriousness of it and pressured her then family Doctor to see her she would have died. The hospital said she was within 2 days from death by the time she was admitted. Now keep in mind all this happened in LESS THAN 6 MONTHS TO A GIRL WHO HARDLY EVER DRANK TIL THE LAST 6 MONTHS. Her memory isn't back to what it was.

I have this disease but not an alcoholic. Had two gastric bypass sugerys. Then couldn't eat enough to stay in my body and absorb the vitamins and minerals from foods. Constant dumping syndrom after eating small amouts of food.
It can also happen with GI diseases.
My husband has Korsakoff and is in a care home. I would like to know the stages of this disease. He has been in the care home for 2 1/2 yrs
Does your husband have just wernicke or korsakoff? It is the most horrible cruel disease I have ever seen. I think every person is possibly different, but my mum became severely ill in the may,eventually diagnosed with korsakoff in the July and passed in the December… but it hit my mum like a ton of bricks. Roughly every 5 weeks she would go into some kind of deep sleep/coma and 2 days later she would come round and the illness would have progressed ie: the first time she had memory loss,couldn’t use her legs and couldn’t eat or drink so needed a PEG, then the very last one she couldn’t form her words,all the words were colours as that’s all she could then remember. The only consolation I had was that she passed in peace with me at home caring for her. I really wish you the best of luck on this hard journey ❤
As long as thiamine is properly supplemented, Korsakoff Syndrome is a stable disease. Memory deficits and confabulation will stay constant unless there is some other medical condition. There are not stages of progression. There is acute Wernicke’s encephalopathy, the KS is essentially the long-term permanent effect. KS is not a separate or progressive pathology.
I had wernicke's due to extreme vomiting during pregnancy which resulted in a miscarriage..Dont remember about 10 days of my life which I had spend in ICU...Its been 8 years but still my movements are not like before.
Hello I've got a doubt on this.. Does Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome only occur through chronic alcoholism induced Vit B1 deficiency or can it also occur where there is physiological malabsorbtion of Vit B1? Great work guyss
any kind of chronic vit B1 deficiency will lead to Wernicke Korakoff syndrome, intestinal malabsorption included. Alcholosim is just by far the most common reason of vit B1 deficiency.
It CAN be caused non-alcoholic related conditions that related to Vitamin B (thiamine) deficiency. Interestingly enough- this may occur in rare cases of obesity (?by pass) surgery. Also diet deficient in B2! Conditions that impart GI absorption of V- B1

No not at all, alcoholism itself is very common and undoubtedly there are millions of alcoholics who just drink and dont eat.
Korsakoff is not rare indeed.
How many do you know?
@@WhiteMisteryWeed I personally know 3 grown adults past the age of 55 that drink more than they eat. Looking into this kind of stuff to keep an eye on them as can't exactly stop them from themselves
@@WhiteMisteryWeedalso, it's because B1 can't be absorbed because of the alcohol, not just that they aren't getting it.
