    Marketplace bites into breakfast, spilling juicy secrets about premium orange juice and putting popular breakfast sandwiches to the test.
    About two-thirds of us have bought premium orange juice in the past six months, many convinced by claims of pure and natural juice, which make it seem like oranges fall off the tree into the carton. But that’s not the whole story. Tom Harrington talks to juice lovers and an expert who wrote the book on OJ, revealing just how much it is processed and what the labels don’t tell you.

    I tried *concentrated OJ* (canned in freezer section) on a whim recently, and I was blown away by how much more "fresh-squeezed" it actually tasted!! *We could actually taste the fiber & peel, and its "oily" citric scent was divine.* I made it with our filtered water, and it cost much less than the premium, processed stuff. Perhaps it tastes so fresh because it's not stored for a year, which maintains it's natural flavor...not needing secret flavor packets that result from a chemical process on a natural occurring ingredient. I wish CBC had mentioned more about the concentrated versions and their process.

    Growing up in West Africa in the 60-70's, I remember we just peeled the fresh oranges and ate them any time. And there were lots of them too. If one wanted to be fancy, go ahead and squeeze them for some juice, which I always found to be too much work for the amount of juice one gets. People should be encouraged to eat more fresh fruits as much as possible. Anything packaged, often, cannot be free of chemistry. If you are enjoying some OJ in the winter months, you are most likely drinking from a batch from a pasturized storage barrel.

    I've never thought the orange juice in cans / bottles was really fresh because you get orange at times of the year that oranges don't grow in your area, so that means it comes from other areas that are further way. Oranges start to go bad as soon as you pick it off the tree which means to get the orange from there to you something is added to keep it fresh. Not to mention you can't keep fresh squeezed orange for longer than a day. Anyway

    I can't believe people really still think drinking any kind of bottled fruit juice on a daily basis is healthy. There's too much sugar in ANY type of processed juices, even if it's "natural" sugar or naturally occurring fruit sugar. Drinking any citric juice daily causes havoc on your teeth, and the increased intake of sugars can't be good for your body in the long term. The family in the video that drinks six cartons a month...I'd really hate to see the acid erosion and dental problems that's going to develop some time down the road, especially the children with newly erupted adult teeth.

    Haven’t you ever wondered why every glass of Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice tastes the same, no matter where in the world you buy it or what time of year you’re drinking it in? Or maybe your brand of choice is Minute Maid or Simply Orange or Florida’s Natural. Either way, I can ask the same question. Why is the taste and flavor so consistent? Why is it that the Minute Maid never tastes like the Tropicana, but always tastes like its own unique beverage?
    Generally speaking, beverages that taste consistently the same follow recipes. They’re things like Coca Cola or Pepsi or a Starbucks Frappuccino. When you make orange juice at home, each batch tastes a little different depending on the oranges you made it from. I hope you’re hearing warning bells in your head right about now.
    The reason your store bought orange juice is so consistently flavorful has more to do with chemistry than nature.
    Making OJ should be pretty simple. Pick oranges. Squeeze them. Put the juice in a carton and voilà!
    But actually, there is an important stage in between that is an open secret in the OJ industry. After the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and, critically, the oxygen is removed from them. That essentially allows the liquid to keep (for up to a year) without spoiling- but that liquid that we think of as orange juice tastes nothing like the Tropicana OJ that comes out of the carton. (source)
    When the juice is stripped of oxygen it is also stripped of flavor providing chemicals. Juice companies therefore hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that formulate perfumes for Dior and Calvin Klein, to engineer flavor packs to add back to the juice to make it taste fresh. Flavor packs aren’t listed as an ingredient on the label because technically they are derived from orange essence and oil. Yet those in the industry will tell you that the flavor packs, whether made for reconstituted or pasteurized orange juice, resemble nothing found in nature. The packs added to juice earmarked for the North American market tend to contain high amounts of ethyl butyrate, a chemical in the fragrance of fresh squeezed orange juice that, juice companies have discovered, Americans favor. Mexicans and Brazilians have a different palate. Flavor packs fabricated for juice geared to these markets therefore highlight different chemicals, the decanals say, or terpene compounds such as valencine.
    The formulas vary to give a brand’s trademark taste. If you’re discerning you may have noticed Minute Maid has a candy like orange flavor. That’s largely due to the flavor pack Coca-Cola has chosen for it. Some companies have even been known to request a flavor pack that mimics the taste of a popular competitor, creating a “hall of mirrors” of flavor packs. Despite the multiple interpretations of a freshly squeezed orange on the market, most flavor packs have a shared source of inspiration: a Florida Valencia orange in spring. (source)
    WHY AREN’T THESE FLAVOR PACKS LISTED AS INGREDIENTS?
    Good question! As with all industrial foods, it’s because of our convoluted labeling laws. You see, these “flavor packs are made from orange by-products - even though these ‘by-products’ are so chemically manipulated that they hardly qualify as ‘by-products’ any more.” (source) Since they’re made from by-products that originated in oranges, they can be added to the orange juice without being considered an “ingredient,” despite the fact that they are chemically altered.
    SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO ABOUT IT?
    First off, I must ask: Why are you drinking juice?? Juice removed from the fruit is just concentrated fructose without any of the naturally-occurring fiber, pectin, and other goodies that make eating a whole fruit good for you. Did you know, for example, that it takes 6-8 medium sized apples to make just 1 cup of apple juice? You probably wouldn’t be able to eat 6-8 medium apples in a single sitting. (I know I can barely eat one!) But you can casually throw back a cup of apple juice, and you would probably be willing to return for seconds. That’s why fruit juice is dangerous. It’s far too easy to consume far too much sugar.

I told myself (and my wife) that for the same amount of money we would spend on commercial brand name fruit juices, might as well spend it on the real, actual fruit and make our own juice, smoothie or shake. @catsrcool9746 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Exactly. Drinking 1/2 cup of orange juice is equivalent to eating 2-4 medium-sized oranges. All the fiber that orange flesh provides is removed during the juicing process, and all that’s left over is sugar from the fruit. Fiber is supposed to keep us full and prevent overeating. Sugary drinks cause overeating!

    • @calebcapoccia
      @calebcapoccia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Jesse Johnson, Sure , OJ companies don't add sugar, but oranges naturally have a lot of sugar. As Miki Hazel pointed out, when we eat whole oranges, we only eat about one or two before getting full, and we consume the fiber. However, if we extract only the sugary juice from the fruit, we can consume much more of it, because the fiber is not there to fill us up.

    I like CBC's investigative shows, but their 'experts' are pretty biased to their own view of the world.
    The 'flavor packs' makes sense because they need to make your orange juice taste the same no matter when or where you buy it; you'd be peeved if it tasted different each time. Do I think they should add that to the ingredient list? Yes. But am I angry they do? Not really. If I want "straight from the orange" juice, I'll go buy the processed oranges myself, thank you.

A more specific example, saccharin, a popular "Sweet n Low" kind of sweetener, is biologically not sugar. Tasting sweet =/= sugar.

    • @Sharak19
      @Sharak19 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jason Big that's not true. Sugar is good for you. It nourishes your cells. It's the quantity that we consume that's bad for you. Plants evolved to produce sugar in nectar and fruits to feed insects and mammals. Why sugar if it was bad for you? For the sake of making money the natural foods given to us by this planet are corrupted and then when it corrupts our health more people who want to make money tell you it's bad for you and to sign up on their weight loss program for sugar free food or instruction. Its all a scam. Just eat natural and whole when you can. Pick an orange over a glass of juice.

    • @hjr9561
      @hjr9561 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There is nothing wrong with almost any sugars provided they are contained within the "natural" food. Perhaps the only exception to that is honey, which is mainly just concentrated sugars.
      The problem is with added processed sugars, of which we are getting too much. The the manufacturers do not want to put on the labels what is the percentage of ADDED sugars, just totals sugars.
      Things like tomato sauce or ketchup have up to 35% sugar, where in reality there should be no ADDED sugars. And there is so many names they call sugar so we never know what the manufacturers are really adding.
      Cut out added sugars or anything that contains added sugars, and provided you don't eat far to much or any processed foods, you will lose weight.
      That includes processed fruit juices. Eat fresh where possible.

      @ravener96 9 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      RecordTrance you do realize that that is the ingredients in actual orange too, right? what makes it taste and smell like orange is a range of esters and acids that make up a minuscule ammount of the total weight of the product. the grand majority of a real orange is water and sugar.

Artificial orange juice has flavor packs. basically machine man made artificial chemicals. ooh and before I forget, Artificial orange juice has fragrances. Same ones that make perfumes that you wear on your body. so you are drinking chemical artificial flavor packs powder and fragrances from actual perfumes. - Also in regards to sugar & water. One is Natural and the other is not. Big difference as one can kill you while the other can not. ~ Happy drinking......

    • @ravener96
      @ravener96 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      RecordTrance holy fuck dude. "One is Natural the other is Artificial" not really, concentrate is just orange juice with the water removed, the "chemicals" they may or may not add (to be honest i don't give a shit if they do or not) are the same esters and acids the orange makes. the "artificial chemicals" you speak of are chemically identical to "the real deal".
      "Also in regards to sugar & water. One is Natural and the other is not. Big difference as one can kill you while the other can not." no, no it's not they are both sucrose c6h12o6 and is produced from sugar cane just as naturally as the oranges are. in some cases high fructose corn syrup is used, but that might actually be even closer to the original orange than regular sugar as oranges are naturally high in fructose. this comes after the fact that the concentrate is already high in sugars.
      "Artificial orange juice has fragrances. Same ones that make perfumes that you wear on your body" no, they are not the same ones you wear on your body, they are the same ones that , in nature, oranges make. the ones you wear on your body generally come from flowers and such and are chemically different from the ones they would add to orange juice.
      chemicals aren't scary, everything (for the most part at least) is made from chemicals. sugar is a chemical, vinegar is (mostly a single) chemical. the chemicals that make up orange flavour are chemicals (esters for the most part).
      you seem like the kind of person to not get vaccinated, not exactly related, but just FYI, they work, go get them.
