My steering is loose on my 82’ K5 square body. This is motivating me to fix it my self. Wish I had a garage like yours. It’s hot af where I’m at. I’ll wait for cooler weather so I could do it on the street. Your K5 looks like you changed everything on it. Mine is old and rusty. I have a lot of work to do. I just subscribed to your channel and I hope I could find more good info like this. Thanks again you gave me confidence to move forward
Thank you for the information you gave me the other day. I got the parts in it worked. I like to know if you can give me some information on the staring pump and it looks like a filter. I'm not for sure from the pictures. I see in the video can you give me information about it? I'm looking for a staring pump upgrade. If you have any information, I appreciate it. Thank you. Happy new year.
This truck has a PSC ram assist steering system. That system comes with a high output pump and an external reservoir for the additional fluid the system requires.
Great video, unfortunately having zero luck on my 86 C10. The splined end had to be hammered half way in and the end that goes to the steering wheel end doesn't fit at all. Luckily I hadn't cut it so I will be returning it to Summit.
Both Borgeson and Flaming River make very nice aftermarket steering shaft but too expensive. A much better budget option would be to buy the parts from Speedway motors. They have builder parts 4 hot rod steering shafts and any configuration. I purchased 2 high quality joints with the correct spline count and a 3/4 solid round bar for just over $50. Welded it together with a slip in the middle and a safety bolt thru each welded area in case the weld ever breaks. The come in bolt together or weld together options. You can build it without a slip but its way easier to take the extra time and make it slip for easier removal anytime.
Can you tell me where you bought the bearing at for your truck? I have a 1988 square body V 30 truck looking for the lower steering column bearing. thank you
Confused at why you cut it twice at around the 14:43 mark. Is the first cut with the shaft not extended and 2nd one is with it extending. Was confused why not cut once. Just bought mine shaft was just wanting clarification
The first cut was just to shorten the shaft enough to fit it in the truck so I could take a more accurate precision measurement with all components in their final position. I wanted the shaft to have as much upward slip as possible so in the event of an accident it would be able to collapse as much as possible. Also that's just what their directions say to do 😅
Did you guys ever post the video on the xj steering shaft. I’ve got a 72 k5 and I think the xj shaft I bought has 30 spline. My gear box is 36 spline. Wondering if you found one that works for you gen 1 blazers.
We haven’t dropped the XJ shaft video as of yet. As for the difference in gear box spline, we ran into this with a swap for hydro assist and were able to get just the coupler end from Summit with the right splines.
The hole we drilled in the one side is for the set screw to go through then it tightens against the other side we didn't drill out. There is just the one hole through the one side of the shaft. I hope that helps.
Hello nice install, Questions for you I have a 87 K5 blazer would you know how many splines I have on my oem shaft for this truck? And can the old oem shaft be reinstalled after heating up and loosening the collapse pins inside the old shaft? In case I have to reinstall it back?
Great upgrade seemingly, I also own a factory untouched ‘88 K5 and looking for the Jeep steering shaft option, I saw both, the Jeep shaft and the bearing kit in your Amazon store, can you please confirm this is the correct part I will need? SecosAutoparts Lower Power Steering Column Shaft Compatible with Jeep Cherokee 1984-1994 Comanche 1986-1992 Replace# 4713943 and Crown Automotive 4487696K Steering Shaft Bearing Kit? Is the Jeep shaft a drop in option or Will I have to custom anything? Thanks again for a great video tutorial
We installed the crown bearing and jeep shaft from our Amazon store on an 84 k5 and they worked perfect. You just need to heat up the plastic keeper in the middle to allow the shaft to collapse a little.
I haven't noticed extra vibration on any of the trucks we have done this on. The xj shaft should work. Just check to see if your steering column has the double D end on it vs the spline drive.
Hey Mark, The steering shaft comes really long, so long that you can't fully extend it without cutting a little off first. I believe they send it really long for folks with body lifts or who may have moved the steering box forward. I bet you could measure the distance between the steering column and box and make just one cut however this is the method they suggest and it gets you 100% dialed in.
@@UintaGarage thank you for your reply! Love the square body! I was thinking it extends a lot more than just pulling it. Makes sense now! So I shouldn’t need to pull it more whenever it is on the steering box?
I bought the Borgeson shaft to do this but can not get the upper shaft assembly to attach to the steering column shaft. Did you have any issues with this?
I did not, however, I have seen others that needed to grind a little material off the end of the column or bore out the inside of the double D on the shaft.
I saw the Jeep steering shafts on the table. Why didn't you use that one? I just watched videos about it. I have a 95 k3500 with the old rag joint. The "Jeep Cherokee XJ shaft swap" you dont have to cut it.
Since I have the 1995 k3500 everything I've been looking at so far shows me that I can't use the XJ shaft on my truck I guess something changed in the 95 and up. I'm not sure what the difference is but a 93 and the '95 rag joints look the same so I don't know why I can't do the swap in my truck hopefully your video comes up soon cuz I'm looking for a cheap option that I can do for my truck@@UintaGarage
On all the vehicles we have done this on we also replaced the steering column bearings that were shot between that bearing and this steering shift the steering was significantly tighter and more responsive feeling.
I’ve done the Borgeson upgrade a couple years ago with no regrets. I had to get a different lower joint. The one listed did not fit the PSC steering box. Great info on the lower bearing.
It's a very similar process but they have a different part number for the steering shaft. Borgeson has it on their website. It's a spline drive vs double D.
Are you getting any added vibrations from the road since you replaced the steering shaft with a solid shaft? Sine you have no rubber bushings to cancel this from the factory steering shaft?
Great video! I’ll do this on my 87 ! Thanks man

Step by step video. Thanks a lot, from Colombia.
Thanks for the video. It was so easy to install after watching this. I installed it in the dark with a headlamp. Step by step was perfect. Thx again.
Thank you for the comment/feedback! I'm very happy to hear this helped someone :)
Outstanding work!! I'm going to deploy this idea on my 1978 Chevy Scottsdale 4x4 asap!!
Thanks, my new shaft is on it's way, your video is extremely informative.

No I didn't notice any additional vibrations.

Great info. But why no grease on the spline just in case it had to be taken off again?
That's something to consider. Maybe we will do that on the next one.

Steering shaft bearing. You can find it on our Amazon store under "steering shaft upgrade" www.amazon.com/shop/UintaGarage
