I think it's about grief. His love has died...the row of black cars, the flowers, his love never to come back. Everyone turns their head when they see him. He's consumed by the weight of the emotions he's feeling and deep in mourning.

Yes, definitely about grief. The speaker is even contemplating suicide. He says "If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes." The setting sun has long been associated with death in mythology and literature, and to "look hard enough into the setting sun" is, I believe, a metaphor for committing suicide as a means of reuniting with the loved one he has lost. This is a great rock and roll song, but it is an incredibly sad song when you figure out everything he is saying.

The song tells us about someone's feelings of loss and grief because of the death of a dear person. You can pincture the events immediately before the funeral :flowers, black cars (on their way to the funeral), people in the streets, some girls in colourful dresses (who probably remind him of the dead girl), meaning "life" and happiness "life" in uxtaposition to the "dead girl". He emphasises in having everything painted "black" which represents mourning (in the Western world) and it's a means to express his grief.
