It's hilarious watching some of the other reactors listening to this and don't get it until the name 'Lucifer' comes up.... Who else can come up with these sort of lyrics and make such a great track. As you said, they came at the subject from a completely different angle, which catches everyone else out.

You make me happy about how you totally get, not only the music, but the nature of the bands and their members.
    The Stones and
The Beatles were close to simultaneous in their arrivals and completely different. The Stones were straight up bad boys. The Beatles had their dark lyric songs as well but their music made it much harder to pick up on.

  • @racinnut77
    @racinnut77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

This song came out in 1968, it is off of "Beggar's Banquet". If you like the piano on the tract it's played by Nicky Hopkins. if there's a classic song from that era with great piano, chances are it's Nicky. The song has nothing to do with praising the devil as some (not necessarily you) would believe. "After all, it was you and me." The devil per the legend simply offers an alternative choice, it's up you to make the right decision. If you don't, don't blame Lucifer.

My interpretation of this song has always been that Mick is literally singing the Devil's POV, that's why it's upbeat, he's having fun, it's a big FU. On another level, the human level (I'm not religious at all), it's about watching out (like you say at the end) for the pits you can fall into if you're not careful

In the 60s and 70s, my friends and I absolutely loved the Stones. To us, their music was new and exciting with catchy tunes, a great beat and lyrics you could sing along to. Songs like Satisfaction, It's All Over Now, The Last Time and my personal favourite Paint It Black (God, I love that song!) not forgetting Street Fighting Man, Jumping Jack Flash, Brown Sugar, crikey, the list is endless. We couldn't hardly wait for the next Stones record to come out and it always stormed up the charts and they were often on Top of the Pops, practically the only pop programme we had in the UK at that time. Such a massive influence on the music industry - happy days!

Back in the day, they were considered the "bad boys" where The Beatles were the good boys (that is, until Lennon decided to really speak his mind).
The title, Sympathy for The Devil provokes in and of itself. However it's really a unique way of saying, don't blame the evil in this world on this manmade boogieman...we humans must take responsibility for our evil actions. Poor devil gets all the blame...have pity on him!!

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long years
Stole million man's soul an faith
And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
    Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guess my name
    But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
    Stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
    Killed Tsar and his ministers
    Anastasia screamed in vain
    I rode a tank
    Held a general's rank
    When the blitzkrieg raged
    And the bodies stank
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah

This is my favorite rock song perhaps of all time. I love your reaction to it. It is brilliant poetry backed by their sound perfectly. Just a masterpiece.
The Rolling Stones are rock and roll personified.
    Great job, guys!

There’s a video on TH-cam of the Stones in the studio; 1968 this was released when they were just in their early twenties. You can watch them just starting to create this masterpiece.

This is one of those Stones songs offered as caution for the dangers of world - but you can know the world is dangerous and still keep dancing.

Stray Cat Blues is one that is a straight up nasty rocker, you won’t regret doing this song, very risky lyrics for the time that only the Stones could have gotten away with, down and dirty rock n roll Rolling Stones style

I absolutely love the last lines, "Use all your well-learned politess, or I'll lay your soul to waste." When the devil finally talks directly to the listener, he gives a direct warning, "Watch what you do when you walk where the devil dwells, for you might lose your life from a casual mistake."

As said before, I think the meaning is knowing when it's the evil in people.. but I feel its more like recognizing when it's the evil of men, and not straying to extremes... very cool lyrics... Great reaction guys! 😃

Lucifer! That best friend you know you have, but feel you don't want to share with anybody. That little devil that makes life exciting, and brings spice to the otherwise dull proceedings. That moment you have when you think nobody is watching. That power and glory you deserve, Brother of Man.

When your history is so famous (or infamous) it makes it into one of the most popular songs of all time. Also that look you gave each other tells me that you guys are well steeped into your own history. Let’s hope the Ukraine war doesn’t kill us all. Best reaction on TH-cam.

The Stones and Beatles were contemporaries. While the Beatles played the "nice boys" angle, respectably dressed and playing calmly, the Stones leaned into the bad boy image 150%.

Such a great song from such a great album. I think this is one of the two best rock albums of all time: Begger's Banquet from the Rolling Stones and Music From Big Pink by The Band. Such greatness and just as important today as the day it was made.
