Cool I love to hear more comparisons between ATMOS vs AURO 3D
it pisses me off that your channel is this under rated.. only 40k subs?.. this is literally the BEST home theatre channel in existence..
THANK YOU! 🎉 One step at a time, one day at a time. Tell your friends… 😄🤘
Yep, good information with top-notch delivery.
Audiophiles are less than one million humans in the whole world... Most of us dont give a F about atmos, dts x auro 3d, 2.1,5.1 etc
@@oblivion_007 his channel isn’t geared strictly for audiophiles .. mostly home theater and everyone watches movies
Thank you for the clip Ealon!
Having an 11.2 Auro setup (6 hight-speaker, 11 speakers are finally the same after a long journey of getting better results) in the living room with a Denon 8500 and a 9.5.8 setup in the home theater in the basement (17 speakers are the same). Placement of the hight speakers are 3:3:2, first row at the line of the front wides (with that placement it fits the Dolby-, DTS- and Auro Norm in the elevation-levels in my room). Processed by a Trinnov.
Auro lives (or shines) with the hight speakers elevated to the ear-level speaker: Needs to be the same speaker and at max 30 degrees right above. If you play Auro via In-ceiling or with the „normal“ 7.2.6 atmos you do the Auro no justice (if no remapping possible by the processor - only a Trinnov has this function. But even with Trinnov most of the In-ceiling speaker missing the aiming/correct placing of the hight speakers).
As a Swiss, having even some newer UHD‘ with native Auro content. But I have to admit: I love the drama the Auro upmixer is creating with the living-room setup as with the home-theater setup. In my opinion 80% even of the newer Atoms mixes sound better with the Auro upmixer as nativ content.
In my opinion Atmos or Auro sound quite similar at native content. But I stay with my opinion: Get the same speakers at all placements (even with an „Atmos-only-setup“) and do a good manual calibration, do a bit acoustic treatment, that makes more difference than norms.
Thank you for this! 🎉
Had this 1 for a while mate , and you helped me pick a receiver with Auro3D.
Absolutely awesome disc.
Enjoy
Aww, that's great to hear! 😎
In my opinion, the Auro 3D really shines using the top surround (VOG) and the center front height channels. Toby's doesn't support those, so that gives Auro the advantage. I'm using a Marantz AV8805 in a 7.6.1 with three sub configuration.
Yes! I have a center height in place in my theater, but haven’t been in possession of an AVR (yet) that supports it. Hopefully someday soon I can finally hook it up!
The vog literally sends chills down my neck when something overhead flies by, in star wars ep1 when the tank drives over jarjar I crunched down in the seat, only experience that did that to me. Of course, that's auro3d upmixer.
@trauma50disaster1 I thought I was the only one that got chills...
Good stuff! 9 days to go before I can completely redo my entire setup. I can't wait to see your impressions on the 4k version of twister. Looking forward to your next video!
Congrats on your redo! 🎉
Hello Mr, on the minute 1:41 you need to upgrade your receiver , I have the Denon X3800H and I get AURO 3D support in any Dolby Atmos layout configuration , from example I get on Top Front and Top rear AURO-3d support
Oh nice! Glad they updated that flaw. But you’re right…I need to get my hands on an AVR or preamp that can handle 15.1 Auro configurations to really test out its capabilities! 🤘🎉
Hey Ealan, great to see that Turbine Medien makes its way to other countries. I am friends with CEO Phil and we will be hanging out together this Friday not only celebrating his birthday. Being a journalist for our city magazine "Alles Münster" I did a long interview with Phil talking about almost twenty years of Turbine Medien and more. I can provide you with the link (I made an English version available due to several requests). Great channel by the way. Greetz from Germany, Basti 🙋♂️
I would love to have the link to your interview. Vielen dank! 😊
In my experience using Auro3D upmixing on my Denon 6400H has been great for subpar or unbalanced DD or DTS mixes, I found that dialouge cleared up along with more space in the mix in general. if you sytem has upmixing then it's worth cycling through them to see if it can improve a subpar mix.
P.S i've found upmixing works best in movies from the 80's/90's
Hell yeah! I love taking old movies and making them more “modern” with current upmixing tech. 🤘
Totally agree, and even older 2 channel stuff is better with auro for me.
Turbine did such an incredible job remixing the audio for Twister. I got it a couple months ago. It's pretty incredible. Until the USA 4k comes out, this is the definitive edition for Twister. It even has the best video of all the releases. The USA bluray is full of terrible video artifacts, smoothing, and denoising.
It also plays an incredible Atmos demo right after hitting play.
I know! I think the demos on each disc are one of the highlights! 😊
If you are looking to compare more recent titles that have auro 3D tracks I can help you there. You need to buy the *german* blu-ray editions of The Dark Tower, Passengers, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Spider-man: Home-coming and Pixels. Yes, they are only blu-ray, but you can find them cheap and brand new. For the atmos tracks, you'll need the 4K of the first 4 titles and for Pixels you just need the the regular USA blu-ray.
Awesome! Thanks for the recommendations! 🤘
Just upgrade about a week from 5.1.2 to 5.1.4. now looking for a movies with a bettter dynamic sound to rewatch. Can recommend 1 or 2 titles?
A Dune Part 1 & 2 screening party would be a good place to start. :)
How does the US Atmos on UHD compares to the Turbine Media Atmos ?
Tune in tomorrow, hopefully!! 🤞
Does anyone know if the 4K release will include the Auro3D mix?
Probably only in Europe. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne Sweet, I'm in UK. May have to order a copy from Turbine (if they're the main distributor)
How big is the audio? Why cant they fit both audio standards on one disk? How do companies decide to do an Auro mix as well?
The audio is big and immersive. And I have no idea in the second two questions. 🤷♂️
I setup my theater with Auro-3D height layout. 7.2.6 and most of the content I have it set to up-mix using Auro-matic. It works fairly well and hard to tell the difference between Atmos and Auro-3D. I have Twister in DVD and like you preordered the 4K. Just a fun movie to watch and can’t wait. Hopefully the remastered video and audio will blow me away, just like the original many, many years ago.
I hope so too! Can’t wait for Twister to arrive! 😄🎉
I notice a considerable improvement with auromatic, especially the vog. For the majority of poor atmos mixes I always use auro, or old 5.1 movies it's really good for me. Those few great atmos mixes I just switch over.
Awesome! More yes please. I noticed Auro showed back surrounds "active"...but i was under impression Auro ignored back surrounds? Maybe I was misinformed or maybe just the upmixer ignores them? Always appreciate your content any insights 👍. Thank you!
In a typical Auro 3D setup, the rear heights are supposed to be above the surrounds, but I have mine more in line with my surrounds backs, so it’s more of a hybrid setup. But even then, I don’t think it just ignores surrounds backs either. Just depends on how small or large your configuration is. 🤷♂️
I understand that it was only allowed to use side surround heights and the software did not allow rear heights, but then last year they updated it to choose either. It is noted in the manual that the preference is side heights.
I just bought here in the netherlands " Devotion" 4K and to my surprise it got a Dolby atmos and Auro 13.1 soundtrack. Most 4k of this film its just 5.1.. i played the Auro (i have 7.1.4 and marantz cinema 50) and selected auro on the receiver.. Wow what a sound! Its more imersive then the atmos and the 5.1. So when you like this movie try to get the european (german? French?) Edition
Whoa, nice! Thanks for sharing this!
I’ve had this disc for a while and have listen to the Atmos version, thanks to this video its sped up my desire to watch the Auro3D version. And plus the 4K is going to be here in a few weeks.
Hooray! 😃🎉
Interesting review - thanks!
Do you have a Voice of God speaker for Aurora-3D? If not, do you think it would make much of a difference?
Exactly same question here
I don’t at the moment. But I do have 6 height speakers if and when I get an AVR or preamp that can handle a larger configuration, with the middle heights creating a “phantom” VOG. So I don’t think I’ll need to put an actual VOG speaker up this time around.
When I did have a VOG speaker up before, it didn’t seem all that necessary or worth it. But that was when I didn’t have any native Auro mixes, just using Auro as an upmixer. So hopefully in the future I can REALLY test Auro to it limits. 😊
Absolutely for me, gives me goose bumps on fly overs
@@raghavraghu5739 yes, it can be a new experience you can't get anywhere. I love it
My 7015 arrived, front height plan!
My main room has the X3600H / A3 .
Your videos are linking to my life perfectly 👌
$old afew components from the 90's to fund me 😆
Haha! Nice! Congrats on the upgrades!
Ealon thanks for counting to fly the Auro3D flag. We heard about some big plans but not a squeak as yet…
I'm quite sure that once you get your 4k copy of Twister it will be more dynamic.
I'm very excited for this journey you're taking 😊
Me too! Can’t wait to make that comparison!
Interesting that you say about M.Mann being a stickler for sound. When I watched Ferrari I actually stopped a scene and switched from the Atmos track to the DTS-HD track to see if there was an error in that track but it was there in both.
It was like there was normalisation on the dialogue in a couple of points when they were arguing and it cut the audio level right down (I have everything like this disabled on my kit of course).
The track overall wasn’t as good as I was hoping (I was expecting Ford v Ferrari style big car sounds).
Hmm…interesting! Do you know the time stamp, by chance? I’ll see if I experience the same thing with the Atmos or even Auro 3D version I recently got. 👍
@@ealanosborne Haha I thought you’d ask that 😁
Just had a quick Look for you as I vaguely remembered. 1:18.10 when he says “deluded himself”.. it’s like there’s a normalisation on the level and it drops as he shouts.
The whole scene is a bit quiet in general but it happens in a few places in the movie.
@@pauledwards8721 Awesome! Thanks for the heads up! 😊
Hey Ealan, I have four Dolby Atmos enabled speakers resting on the top fronts and rear surrounds. I know ow there’s all sorts of configurations depending on the room, we have an open concept so the rear Atmos Enabled ones have to sit on top of the surrounds. But I’ve been thinking about putting the front ones on the wall. What’s your preference?
I ALWAYS suggest heights be mounted up high or on the ceiling, if at all possible. 🤘
@@ealanosborne I actually did put my Atmos enabled speakers on the ceiling even though they’re not meant for that but I figured hey they produce sound. But I eventually took them down because where I had them was too close to the main listening position and the sound field was too narrow. But maybe I’ll put the fronts on the wall and keep the rear on top of the surrounds and have that hybrid setting in my receiver.
Relaying the experiences without trying to impress. Being unpretentious in front of a camera is quite a novelty nowadays.
Btw thank you for giving a nod to this mad, mad world we are currently living in. Mind you, I would imagine everyone here has got the perfect escapism 😁
Thank you for the heads up of the Dolby Atmos edition of gravity. It was a blast. Cheers
Thanks, man! I appreciate your presence on my channel. :)
Elan, died Auro still us the VOG speaker? If so are you using one?
Yeah, most can still utilize the VOG speaker, although ever since I upgraded to 6 heights, I removed my VOG speaker since I now get a phantom VOG with the middle heights. But for this video specifically, I could only support 4 heights, since that’s the max the Marantz SR7015 can handle. I hope to acquire an AVR or preamp that can support a 15.1 Auro 3D layout, since my theater is wired to accommodate a configuration that large. 🤘🎉
@@ealanosborne Thank you. I've not heard "front heights" or "rear heights" in place of overhead Atmos speakers so I'm apprehensive to try it out. You and others seem to like them better though so maybe it's worth a shot.
Awesome comparison, my son’s favorite movie, he watched it at least 100 times and is excited for Twisters. I’m sure he’ll ask for the 4k version, and I’m looking forward to watch and listen to the Atmos mix on my Denon 4800. Interesting to know that the Auro upmix has better base than the original Auro. Love your reviews, keep going, one day at the time. Cheers 🙌🏻🖖🏻
Thank you very much! I really do appreciate your presence on my channel! 🎉
Did you get the new Twister release? I’d love to see you compare the Turbine Atmos with the new Twister 4K Atmos track.
I mentioned it quickly in my review of the 4K Twister. In short, it’s better on 4K since Jan de Bont himself oversaw the remaster of the Atmos track, as opposed to the Turbine company doing their own thing.
Hey thanks for the reply! Love the channel and naturally I found that video right after I posted the comment. Any way keep up the good work. 👍
Good review! Question: why with Auro3D are my SRR and SRL not being used? I have the same 7.2.4 setup and set my overheads to height for both.
PS, I’m glad someone picked up this big old toy every one else seemed to put down and hasn’t played with in years. I’m pretty interested in Auro3D and where it could go.
Good question. 🤔 Is this with Auro 3D upmixing, or a native Auro mix? It’s been awhile since I tested Auro upmixing (since I normally don’t have the SR7015 hooked up), so it may just be an upmixing thing. But clearly all speakers were active when I threw in the native Auro mix. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne upmixing for sure. No one seems to be supporting it state-side, so I guess I get what I get from it. It’s still worth it for 5.1 upmixes, maybe not so much for Atmos or DTS X, especially on disc. Thanks anyway!
I prefer AURO-3D 👍. Transient response are much quicker and tighter for movie and music.
Hell yeah! 🤘
Nice review! Curious to hear about your speaker layout.
For this, it’s a 7.2.4 setup, since that’s the max my SR7015 can handle. Hopefully I can pull off a 15.1 Auro 3D setup someday, since that’s what my theater room can technically handle. 🤞🤞
A comparison with Auro 3D with 7 speakers in the bed layer, 5 heights speakers and the voice of god speaker vs Dolby atmos 7.x.6 would be interesting. I think that having the 3 layers of speakers with Auro 3D would be a better version than Atmos, which only has 2.
New subscriber here and have a couple of questions. Are both versions in English, or German? If they're in English, I didn't even know there were movies in Auro 3D for the US market, so thanks for the info! And just to be certain I understand the comparison, your equipment set-up is for Atmos and you played the Auro version thru the same speakers and not an Auro arrangement, correct? (Not slamming you, just want to know so I know what your opinion is based on)
Correct. I kept the speaker assignment the same, although I do have my heights to Auro 3D specs, being up 30 degrees from my listening position, since I think it makes the height effects more prominent 👍
And yes, this version defaults to German, since it’s imported from there, but you can choose the English Atmos or Auro track as well.
Interesting. Thanks.
Those Turbine releases with both an Atmos and an Auro-3D track are actually mixed by different studios. So the difference in both mixes don't really tell you that much about the format itself.
Thank you!! Love this!!
You’re welcome!!!
Browsing "Auro 3D" on Wikipedia, and this format is made by Auro Technologies from Belgium 😅
It sure is! Although now they’re called NEWAURO BV.
YES !!!
Hell yes! 😄🎉
Sweet video. These compare and contrast videos are enjoyable. Also, I wish Auro 3D was 15.1 unless they added front wides or something. "Auro 15.1!!! Now with front wides!" Haha
Hey and you should really reach out to Audyssey and get a MultEQ X license for that Marantz. You have the SACT and could probably put some Magic Beans on it too.
So true! But ultimately I just need a preamp that supports a 15.1 Auro setup. 🤞🤞
@@ealanosborne do you know something I don't know? Auro maxes out at 13.1 right now....
@@mikeortiz2139 Whoops. No, you’re right. I got that mixed up with AVR channel counts. But I agree…front wide support would the ultimate 15.1 Auro setup. Which could be possible with their new-and-improved engine that’s supposedly coming out with their NEWAURO BV rebranding. 🤷♂️
Yo Ealan buddy😊
I think you forgot to mention what was your satellite channel setup (all other channels than sw channel x.1 or x.1/2.n ), was it full range setup as "large" (I assume) or setup as "small" with further related setup of crossover frequency (? 40 to 250 Hz ).
If you setup most older movies (also new to be honest) with "large" setup then it sound like poop, no bass only some effects, once per 10 minutes :-).
But if you set it up for "small" and set crossover frequencies at least "150Hz" (I usually use 200 or 180 or 250 Hz, depends on movie bass dominance recording) the it will rock your room.
Negative result of setting "150Hz" and higher (also lower) is directive of bass, now you will start to her where the bass comes from, so if you have only 1 sub not in "center front" but some "left or right corner" then you will her those low freq. from this one left (or right )corner which is pretty asymmetric and disturbing, that is why you need to have 2 subs, one left and one right in symmetric distance.
There are some movies like "Unbroken (2014)" which can run with "large" setup (also old "Die Hard (1988)" I think).
But most movies need "small" setup (like "The Lord of the Rings: xxx (2001)) and no matter if you have mega large 15' front rear whatever bass speakers, it won't help you at all !!!
I was watching old Twister 5.1 some years ago with setup "small" 200Hz and the bass effects were mind blowing so if you tell me that it was so so then I assume that your setup is "large" and it sounds like bull poop.
99.9% of people do a small setup regarding speakers.
Greetings from Germany 😊
Guten tag! 🎉
I’ve been trying to find it, but Alex had a Q&A with sound united and they mentioned that a specific set up will list all three Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D but one specific set up although it supports Atmos it downgrades it to only the two front height channels. Have you heard this before?
AFAIK Auro3D is dead, provided the Dutch company that created it and own its rights has filed for bankruptcy some time ago. So I didn't know and didn't expect to find any source material in this format.
It's a shame because I love their upmixer and I use it most of the time for all the non-Atmos content (I dunno if my receiver is able to override Atmos and use Auro3D over it) and it works a lot better than the Dolby and DTS solutions, especially with my system that doesn't have in-ceiling speakers but four heights.
I’ve made a video about their resurgence, now being called NEWAURO BV, and coming out with even more new technologies. We even had their CTO on our podcast a couple weeks back discussing these topics. Check ‘em out! 😊🎉
Thanks man, You're a great presenter
Thank you!
Interesting comparison, Ealan. Do you have the Voice of God speaker ? I was surprised that the mastermind behind Auro 3D doesn't run one, but I guess it's one of those things where geniuses can break the rules because they made them ;)
Since I have my front and rear heights up 30 degrees (like Auro suggests) they do a great job with the phantom VOG. Although I have 6 heights in the theater, so once I get my hands on an AVR that can handle a 9.x.6 configuration, I’ll def be pushing a 13.1 Auro setup to its max. And I still have it wired for a true VOG channel, so I may put the VOG speaker back up there once I get a monster AVR like that. 😊🎉
@@ealanosborne cool ! Techno Dad will be on your doorstep the day that happens ;)
Auro 15.1? Always thought that 13.1 was the max for auro3d.
Well, it’s wishful thinking on my part, since my theater can accommodate. 😊 Maybe someday with NEWAURO’s resurgence after bankruptcy! 🤞🤞
@@ealanosbornewatched some interviews about new auro and Auro cx they mention more speakers and even objects but have not seen it being implemented anywhere.
@@hooked72 Apparenrly they’re focusing on music initially with the new rollouts, but eventually some streaming platforms will be on board? That’s what Bert eluded to in our interview with him. 🤷♂️But of course he couldn’t disclose any of that information explicitly. 😄
Very good
Thanks, Craig!
Check the new movie horizon around minute 27 it have some nices atmos effects
Thanks for the recommendation!
That's not a older mix. It a remix movie they didn't have atmos when it came out or Auro 3D
❤
The auro3d upmixer is where the majority of fans use and enjoy auro3d, its a small group. The even smaller subset of people interested in native auro3d is a super niche rabbit hole you've entered, buy good have fun.
I found auro3d upmixer by accident just cycling through sound modes and I instantly preferred it for everything accept the few actually great atmos mixes. I do use the vog and center hight which are literally spine tingling for me on fly overs.
Of particular note the heights are at 30 deg angles to mlp which creates the surround bubble, and atmos down firing speakers are contraindicated to produce that effect.
your overthinking it. Maybe go outside.
🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤘♥️♥️♥️
