Do you need movies that are specifically filmed with Auro3D or it’s the receiver that does that once is ready to play Auro3D?
How can you use auro upmixer on atmos content?
@@alambe7275 No not at all. Curious why you think that. Auro uses the bed layer 5.1 or 7.1 for the upmixing. You don’t lose anything in the bed layers, but you gain in the height speakers.

Hey man, just discovered your channel and i cannot stop watching your videos! learning so much. brilliant content, honestly. I have a very very ODD shaped setup. i'm looking to bite the bullet and upgrade my 5.1 setup to 5.1.4, i bought a dolby atmos samsung soundbar for my bedroom, and it just totally blew my mind how the sound FILLS UP the entire room, with the added effect of vertical sound coming from the heavens. i'm aware of your atmos criticisms! So i have a rectangular shaped loungeroom, with a TV in the corner, i have NO other place for the TV. i sit in two places, i pull up a chair to sit directly infront of the TV to be in the correct viewing distance to soak up that 4k or diagonal from the TV in the opposite corner. because of the limitations of my space the front 3 speakers are basically mounted 20cm below the ceiling, the rear surrounds are at ear level. now if i'm looking to add 4 height speakers that will compliment both Dolby Atmos & Auro 3D in my two different listening positions, where should i put them?! above the rear surrounds on the wall? evenly spaced and angled ceiling mounted?! are the front speakers which are basically ceiling height going to compromise the added height channels? sorry to blast you with rounds of questions, but if you are able to respond, that would be legendary! CHEERS TECHNO DAD YEAH!
I never knew about auro 3-D until I saw your video. I have a lot of Dolby atmos content, but to this day for the past two years since I first got my HT setup, I have not been satisfied with it. I plan on selling my current AVR to get one that has A3D to finally get my money’s worth! Imo Dolby atmos Is truly is lackluster.

You say if the Atmos is good, there is no difference between Atmos and Auro 3d. My question is, with good Atmos tracks, if we do Auro 3d, will it sound as good as the original Atmos track or will it degrade the sound quality? The reason I ask is, If the answer is yes, then we can always leave it on Auro 3d regardless of the native format, so we don’t have to bother switching back and forth.

I'm setting up a room and I have an onkyo tx-sr494 5.1.2 with some kef 5001s laying around ( and some polk floor standing fronts and other polks but too big a footprint) and I have a 13ftx 11ft room. I also have a LG SN11RG.
This is to use with a 100-120 inch projector. How much better will the cheap av receiver be than the high end sound bar? Thanks for any advice
Great video!!! I just got auro-3d and I have a 5.1 system(against back wall). I don't want to lower my side surrounds, I'm afraid they will be to localized. Can I leave my surrounds were they are and put my height channels above/behind me? Thanks!!!!
I have a Marantz’ AV 8805 and my speaker Lay-out is setup for Auro3d 7.3.6. if you stick in an Auro3d disc it will automatically switch to that as well when it sees the flag. But you are correct of you are using another format you will have to manually change it.

Do you think most movies mastered in DTS X are good in that format and do not need the Aura 3D upmixer?
I have the Marantz 8012 with 5 base speakers, 4 hight speakers mounted to the ceiling about 45° from listening position and a top center. I am thinking of moving my hight speakers to the wall to get the 30° angle for Aura 3D and Atmos. Have you heard if this switch also helps for movies that have DTS X?

@@TechnoDad hey 👋🏼 I was looking into upgrading my outdated yamaha receiver which is a 1080p 😆. I'm really looking into denon receiver or onkyo receiver RZ-50 (which hasn't dropped yet). I have 2 questions first is the denon receivers from what I gathered have a lot of bug's in them? And 2 is there really a big difference in a 5.1.4 or is the 7.1.2 better with atoms and Auro3d mixes. Can you really hear a difference with the front stage height channels 🤔 thanks techno!!!
@@movie_av_impulse stay away from Onkyo and go with the Denon. Better quality control. lots of unhappy/mad Onkyo owners out there. my old Onkyo died abd my next AVRA will be Denon for sure. A little more $ but you get what you pay for.
@@sjsphotog thanks.. I was looking into denon but I read that the chip's in the receivers are buggy. But maybe they fixed some of the issues.
@@movie_av_impulse the chips are only buggy when certain setups are made using eARC and 4k 120hz with gaming systems. I actually got my hands on a Denon AVR-X4400 that is the 2018 model, but is capable of Dolby Atmos/Vision, and DTS-X playback, along with being 9.2 or 11.2 with an external amp. @Techno Dad gave it rave reviews, and did a lot of his setup videos with it. I’ll be pushing the limits of my room running a 7.2.4 setup with it.
I also have the Denon 6700 running a 7.2.4. The 4k Ultra movie "Revenant" in Auro 3-d was pretty outstanding. The scene where he's getting out of the horses corpse to keep from freezing, the snow was melting from the trees and the sound was incredible. For Atmos "The Great Wall" was really good/intense and the more recent "Mad Max" was incredible.
I'd love to hear what other opinions people have on movies if you have some. I'm always looking for something with great sound

Nice video. Can you help me out with a query. Im using denon 4700h auro 3D. Why im not getting enough sound from height speakers.Speakers are working but not loud enough to reach the listening position. What settings should i change to make it audible.

Hey chana,i am using the denon 4500h,which supports auro 3d,but am only running a 5.1.2 with no voice of god channel. Will this work with my setup? My 2 atmos svs elevation speakers are in the frt.
Been searching the denon site today and can't find where to purchase the auro 3d upgrade... Talked to someone on live chat and they said they only serve customers in the US and Canada and unfortunately for me I live in Barbados.

@Techno Dad How do you connect the second sub connection to the speaker for voice of god? Does the sub out need to be connected to an amp and then to speaker or can it be connected directly to from the sub out to the speaker?

I have Denon X6400H with Auro 3D support. I did so much digging online and still didn't get a clear answer.
When I play TrueHD with Atmos and turn on Auro 3D, (like in your video) I can see that as input only the 7.1 TrueHD is active. Is Auro 3D playing the Atmos track from the high speakers, or is only upmixing the 7.1?
What exactly Auro 3D is using as source for the upmix?
As I said, like in your video, my Denon X6400H is showing me that is using as input ONLY the 7.1 ear level speakers.
What is happening with the Atmos track?
Is it ignored? Or is also used in the mix for the upper speakers?

I have it on my Denon 4200 from 2015. There is just too much bass boost when using max strength on Auro up mixer. Also I have heard voices come out of the height speakers along with DTS upmixer but never the Dolby Upmixer.
Is there any way to keep volume the same when switching from Auro 3d and say DTS or Atmos? Auro 3d at the same volume level sounds louder with increased sub sound

Hi Techno Dad. I just finished watching your video on Auro 3D which is something I have only very recently discovered even existed. I have a Yamaha AVR model RX -V781 that has Dolby Atmos that I am only recently trying to learn how it works. I bought the AVR used and it didn't come with the microphone for the room correction system which I believe Is called YPAO. I'm thinking of possibly upgrading my AVR to one that accommodates a 7.2.4 channel system. You have given me a couple of choices from Marantz and Denon that I will research further. Do you know of somewhere that I can find a list of other brands to choose from that have Auro 3D? Thank you. I enjoyed your presentation and consequently have subscribed to your channel.
I haven’t tried the Auro 3D much but did do a comparison between Atmos and the DTS X up mixer when I first installed everything and I watch everything with DTS X up mixer, better presentation for my setup. Have you done a similar comparison and if so what are your thoughts?
I tried it once didn’t like it didn’t like that you lose your ear level speakers just to get all of your sound out of your height and ceiling speakers.

I have to admit that Auro3D is big in Europe and its popularity has increased the very last time. As long as you stick to the angle of 30°, you are good to go. So I’m looking forward to see more Auro3D-content in the near future. And when there is no Auro-sound available (I agree) you just use the upmixer. 💪🏼

@Techno Dad , good video mate. I also am finding that Most Atmos tracks do not live up to the hype and it’s always good to try Auro 3D if you have it. Even the Auro 2d can sometimes make a difference. Half the Atmos content is no better than DTS MA. I run a Marantz 8802 pre with a Denon Poaa1hd and am seriously thinking of going back to my Avpa1hd as it still shows my 8802 the back door. Your receiver or pre/pro has a good bit to do wth the mix too and is something people overlook. If it was not for the fact that my Avpa1hd has not got 4k support then I would still be using it because to be honest the sound clarity and attack is much better than my marantz with Atmos or not.

@@TechnoDad Thank you. I saw Joe's video of the same demo, but his video had an image of a road up. With his, I was looking at the road expecting the tractor to come, but with yours I was half expecting the tractor to arrive on the road I'm sat next to. I've trying to find an Auro 3D demo disk (I think Joe got one from Denon) in the UK. You guys assume we have loads of Auro 3D content here in Europe - that may be true for some types of music, but most of us are stuck with poorly mastered Atmos tracks (thanks Disney) just like you.
Hello Techno Dad. I have Denon X4500H and I see it can play Atmos movies. Just wonder what is the auro-matic button on denon remote control to do the Auro up mix?
Press one of the colored buttons on the remote and it'll bring up a menu. Then select Auro-3D

Hahaha! Slow & Furious! That's great! I do like the Amsterdam City Center where it turns the layers on and off, it really shows how important the reflections are.
@@TechnoDad Agree. It’s very natural sounding. It’s not like a specific effect is missing without the top / middle layer it’s just the overall immersion bubble gets so much bigger.
Would be curious to hear his take on DTS, I might be wrong on this one but DTS X mixes tends to sound closer to Auro than Atmos does.

Hi Techno Dad. Do you know if the Marantz 8802A allows you to use the Auro upmixer for Atmos. I remember when Dolby banned that for awhile then changed their stance to allow it. But I'm not sure if the 8802A was caught in between this. Did an update alllow it maybe?
Hi! I looked into that 8802A and on the Marantz site, it says Auro-3D is upgradable.
Before I had to return my X3800 for preset issues (see my other comment in Channa's "Denon X3800H Quick Unbox and Dolby Atmos Setup | 11 Channel AVR with SIX HEIGHT CHANNELS!" video), I got a chance to fool around with Auro 3D. Even with a 5.1.4 system (F/R Heights), Auro made a difference. In battle scenes in Midway the sounds of bullets flashing by were more prominent that they were in Atmos. They really whizzed by. It struck me that Auro 3D was much like the various DTS encodes compared to their Dolby counterparts, with heavier volume levels and more dynamic sound.
I have loved all the content on Auro-3D. I also listened to all the Daily HiFi content. Great stuff! I am waiting toward when I can get my height speakers (just got the RX-A8A and recovering from that). I currently only have a 5.1 setup.
It seems like there should be a way I can enjoy Auro upmixing to headphones?
Any details on how to do that? Currently using Dolby Atmos for headphones on Windows 10. I would like to see how Auro does with headphones. :)
Hi Chana I have a denon a4700h in a 5.1.4 set up using your Spatal set up disc (urge everyone to purchase one). For best results do I need to reconfig my speaker set up ?. I see you had a extra speaker (VOG) which termination does that fit on?.speakers are upward firing type.Great Video
Hi! Thank you for picking up our disc, that’s amazing! I would say you probably don’t need to add VOG speaker. The signal will have to come out of subwoofer 2 pre-out and go to an external amp.

Do you need ceiling speakers and/or voice of god speaker for this to sound better than atmos? I currently have 4 top-firing speakers and wondering if that makes a difference in using auro 3D.
I think just having the Auro-3D layout will help even if you didn’t have the voice of his channel.

Upmixer a have advantage and will add to the effects. But I found on my AVR Dolby audio processing for movies with is like an upmixer for Dolby atmos content - this trumps other ones easy
How about a speaker layout with atmos enabled ceiling firing speakers for front and rear. A 5.1.4 layout. Can Auro 3D improve the height effect?
Hi! No, Auro-3D won't sound good with in-ceiling speakers.
Techno d I hear what you’re saying and I did try it once I didn’t like that your center channel gets lost in your ear level channels gets lost when you turn on auro 3D.
If you switch between Atmos and Auro you have to switch to PCM instead of Bitstream (i.e. in the Blu-Ray Player Source). Additionally, the Upmixer works with 5.1 and/or 7.1 upmixing best. Correct?
Yes, that’s correct, switch to PCM.
Techno Dad what’s your analysis on setting the audio output on your PS5 to PCM then upmix to Auro 3D to your AVR?
thats intersting as PCM is already decoded, ideally is to use a player that is able to send pure bitstream to AVR
I have one question! Do you know or can test if Auro 3D is heavy on main 7 or 5 channel as dolby or auro is track heavy on all 9 channels? Heavy that I refer is the main channels use lot more power than .4 object channels
I know I'll hear more out of the heights with Auro than I will with Atmos in specific movies.
Mmmm, ok, I've done the same demo's... and there's something here Channa and really need your view. So, I've got the Denon 6400H, so setup for Auro3D... however, using John Wick and the cemetary scene as our benchmark, when I enable Auro3D, yes the heights are nice and the main levels BUT I lose the rear floor channels completely... nothing comes out of them. When I switch back to Atmos, I then get the rear floors enabled. I'm running a 7.1.4 system BTW which I then went into the Denon settigns amounts amended from IN CEILING x4 to the angled 4 front and rear to enable Auro3D.
Also, what I've noticed and is astonishing is that Atmos setting compared to TrueHD + Neural X... the NeuX blows the Atmos into the weeds, it's incredible to extra rain you get out the floor sides and rears compared to Atmos... you may want to try that TrueHD + NeuralX setting mate, seriously and switch between it and Atmos and sit next to your rear floors or side floors... the amount of extrat information makes Atmos sound REALLY POOR!!! So, there's my findings BUT I lose in Auro3D the rear floors, so for me, it's not an option. During 2 hours of testing now, I've decided Atmos will never be selected for an Atmos soundtrack, TrueHD + NeuralX is the one for me!

Hi TD, I’m in the process of building a small dedicated home theater room using the ATMOS and Auro 3D combination layout and wanted to know the following if installing the Top Center (VOG) speaker.
Does Auro 3d up mixer makes use of the top center speaker when up mixing?
Does Dolby Atmos also make use of the top center speaker in Atmos mode?
I’m just trying to figure out if is worth investing in the TC speaker.

would like to know this as well. I'm thinking it fills out the rest of the bubble, but it may not be worth it. As a commenter above stated you will lose rear surround speakers. so your system will be a 10.1 system and you have a VOG channel sitting there unused when using just true atmos.
2 questions have you tried using a really good atmos mix to see what happens and have you tried auro 3d without the vog speaker
he said that using a good atmos mix makes not much of a difference, the problem is with mixes that were done poorly

Great explaination. That makes sense. The only thing i don't like, is that auro 3d renders my rear surround useless. In a 7.2.4 plus VOG speaker setup, it sucks to choose between a useless VOG speaker or useless rear surrounds. Is there a work-around or is it pretty much a common dilemma?

Yes. You can. Switch of Atmos Output in the Apple TV Box Audio Settings. Thema you get out the Dolby „Bed“. This Signal you can upmix with Auro3D.

What up techno dad, Quick question which best set up for Auro 3D? 5.2.5 with the voice of god or a 7.2.4 In a small bedroom with a love sofa in the middle of the room. All speakers will be svs
I haven’t heard Auro with the VOG channel in person but I’d wager the 5.2.5 set up would be better. I have a 5.2.4 and if there’s a flyover effect or something that goes around the room, I can tell there’s a little something missing up above. Could be psychosomatic perhaps but I’m not sure that the 7 channels would give you much more immersion as opposed to the VOG channel

I have my marantz sr7013 in a atmos 7.4(mono).4 setup currently. I want to try auro3d, but will have to set my top speakers to height speakers If i want to be able to switch between formats on the fly instead of moving the speaker setup around every time.
However: I will need to use rear height speaker in the setup as opposed to side/surround height speaker, otherwise Atmos will switch those off and only use the front height speakers...
But do i then place the rear height speakers above my surround base layer speakers as per auro3d spec or do i keep them more aligned as actual rear height speakers more like an atmos setup?
Any advice on this?
Your set up is awesome just the way it is auro 3d May not be what you think it is when you turn that feature on you lose your ear level speakers so that you can get audio sound coming out of your hike in ceiling speakers. I tried it once and didn’t like that the dialogue on the screen supposed to be coming from the center channel but it was coming from the less surround speaker and sometimes it may come from the ceiling speakers that’s weird
Another guy on TH-cam did the same thing you are thinking about doing he change the set up on his Marantz receiver from ceiling speakers to hike speakers even though his speakers were in the ceiling then he had to re-calibrate his speaker set up but he didn’t show how it sound strange
@@alambe7275 yeah, i've since tried the same thing and don't like the sound. Even when the speakers are in the correct position for 'height' i don't like it. I prefer 'top' over height.
I do have to mention this was only in Atmos decoding. So far there is too little content in auro that i like and wouldn't be also available in atmos.
Still curious about auro though, but for the time being i'll keep my setup in atmos mode.

Question for you and anyone else with an Auro 3D setup... When you use the Auro 3D upmixer, for one of those lackluster Atmos movies, are the height level speakers simply replaying the ear level signal, minus the center channel? For example, is the FRH simply playing the same thing as would come out of the FR? FLH to FL? RRH to SR or RR? RLH to SL or RL? Just wondering is all. This is my theory because in a previous video I saw discussing Auro 3D, the guy kept emphasizing that the best thing about the Auro 3D upmix is that the voice does NOT get mixed into the height channels. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't unfortunately. So with sources I know are sub optimal I just quickly run them through each. I've been in search of an answer for the same question and never really found much.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago and the five channel amps were the only ones in stock. The HTP-1 I got on the email list and one came available the next day so I bought it. I understand that there won’t be many or any more in stock for months due to the factory burning down producing the DACs.
Auro 3D upmixer will wow you and your friends. You do have to configure your height speakers a certain way in the amp assign section of your prepro or AVR to get the Auro 3D capability. Certain height configurations will only give you Atmos and DTS:X without the option for Auro 3D. Almost like magic😂🤣Dreamedia in the house ❤🔥
Mr.Jones, I have a 5.1.2 with two front heights currently. I have an AudioControl AVR instead of a Denon though, so I haven't figured out how to configure this properly to test out yet. Do you know off chance if I should be able to get things to work on this configuration? If not, this is where I'll have to start messing around to figure things out I think.
@@snootz do you have the Concert XR-4? The older 7 and 9 Audio Control AVR'S do not support Auro 3D. The XR-4 and up do offer Auro 3D support. 2 channels will work but won't be as immersive as 4. In the Denon I believe there are 3 ways to configure the height channels to support Auro 3D and 5 ways that do not support Auro 3D. You would have to check the GUI or your manual to see which height channel configurations support Auro 3D. You don't actually have to place the speakers in the exact location that they show on your AVR but would sound better if they are placed in those locations.
@@keepingupwiththejones2933 just a quick follow-up. I have the Concert XR-6, and it actually worked by simply choosing Auro3D with the 'surround mode' select button for me, I didn't have to do any extra speaker configuration steps. Can you confirm if the Denon models also have two extra Auro options in the settings? For me I have an 'Auro-matic 3D options' which has 5 settings, 'medium' as default, and an 'Auro-Matic Strength' option which you can set between 1-16, '12' being default, I didn't change these at all though.
@@snootz yes the Denon has those two options under Audio/Surround Parameter but only after changing speaker configuration and once you engage the Auro 3D. . In the Denon it is called Auromatic 3D Preset and Auromatic 3D Strength.

If you have your Height Speakers set to Ceiling (in your x4700H) it will not give you the option for Auro 3D, you will need to set your Ceiling Speakers to Height Speakers. That should then give you the option for Auro 3D. Hope that Helps!

I'm hoping Auro 3D appears on receivers in the $400-$700 range in a few generations. Does it scale to fewer speakers like Atmos does?
I'm not sure there are any at that price point. As far as scaling, the minimum to run Auro is 9.1. If there's 13.1 content, it will go down to 9.1 with great accuracy.
I'm in the same boat. Will hopefully be a nice upgrade in a few years but for the time being I'll just enjoy my 5.1.2 setup with Dolby Surround and DTSX.
I have a Denon x4700 and when im using my Apple TV 4K it will only let me play atmos. Is there a way to switch to Auro-3d?
Hi! You'll have to select Auro-3D manually on the Denon remote. There are colored buttons at the bottom, press one of those until you highlight Auro-3D.
So you've presumably got your speakers in an auro 3d set up rather than a strict atmos set up (all at the corrct angles etc).
I've heard from the interview that the atmos set up i.e. the angle thing, was largely to differentiate it from auro 3d for legal and patent reasons.
Also, I think I've seen elsewhere that you've said you need to assign rear heights not as surround heights otherwise they won't work and you'll then only get front heights.
Are still of the same mind about auro 3d or has your view changed at all? Looking to get my home theatre set up and I think this is the path I'll take.

Does setting my ceiling speakers to front and rear heights have a negative effect on Dolby Atmos? Also after I switch them do I need to re-run Audyssey? I have a Marantz AV7705
I'm not 100% sure as I haven't tried it out and to compare both ways. Although, I don't have ceiling speakers, so I can't say.

Would you say some of the issues is with the engineer mixing the atmos track? When you mentioned the door shutting and hearing it only in front of you on atmos, wouldn't that be up to the engineer to add data to the atmos height channels? What I'm getting at, is part of the lack of immersion in the hands of the engineer?
100%!! Time and budget constraints really add to to the situation of Atmos mixes being sub par.
I was testing Auro 3D in my X4400H with the upmixer , the big downside for me is there no use at all for my back surround speaker ,but I found DTS X upmixer use all my 11.1 channels set up including my back surround speaker and for me was better surround bubble experience
Yes! The X4400H will not operate your surround back speakers using Auro. You would need the Denon X6700H to move to a 13 channel Auro configuration which will add the surround back channels.
What do you do to only listen to the height channels to do the A/B test
Hi James! So I have two, five channel amps, one for the ear level speakers and another for the height channels. So I would just turn off the amp for the ear level speakers to hear what is going on with the height channels. Then I would watch a scene in Atmos and the watch it again Auro-3D. Then I would turn the ear level amp back on and switch back and forth between Atmos and Auro.

Sure, but it won't be as effective as a 5.1.4 setup.

the fair comparison would be with DTS X PRO upmixer, which is able to use the same layout 7.1.6 as AURO 3D with the newerAVR models from denon and marantz
watched this video some 4-5 times since the time it was published. now got time and made my mind to run 7.2.6 (with 2 vog channels / top middle with the latest update). it is better to use auromatic upmixer for most of the content I believe. very much convinced !!

Curious if you would get different results in your DOLBY ATMOS playback reported results if you were using a high-end pre-pro like an ACURUS MUSE or a STORM ISP MK2-16?
As an example: In STAR WARS: RISE OF SKYWALKER, during the third act when Emperor Palpatine is talking with Rey in the "cave"...on a MARANTZ higher end AVR, Palpatine's echo voices are strictly located to the rear speakers, while with the high-end pre-pros the echo voices are floating around the room.
I realize there are far more AVR users than high-end pre-pros, but should the blame really be on DOLBY versus on the hardware?
An additional question:
Did you, during your tests, ever find a time when a DOLBY ATMOS or DTS:X decoding sounded better than the AURO3D decoding?
