Gravity and No Time to Die with the Cuban Club scene are my 2 favorite movies to test setups. Gravity for how everything moves and flows through the audio space and NTTD for the consistent clarity and volume of the in-ear banter to setup some easy levels as far as separation from the rest of the speakers.
I snagged a used Diamond version of Gravity a number of years ago. The first 15-20 minutes has some of the best use of Atmos I've ever heard. I've watched it in 5.1, 5.1.2 and now 5.1.4 and in the latter it's astounding.

The Atmos audio track aside, Sandra Bullock may give the performance of her career. For the majority of the movie, she is very much alone out there in the blackness of space losing hope, regaining it. losing it again. She pulls it off brilliantly.
Nice Ealan. I did much the same with the ApoleTV version until this came out. There’s apparently a 4K in the works but Cuaron was not happy with the way the transfer looked. I think in part this re-release was to gauge interest in the 4K. . I have to add that it’s a beautiful image on the Blu-ray so I can imagine what a 4K will look like.

I just received my copy from Amazon today and I can't wait to put it into my Panasonic DP-UB9000 player hooked up to my Marantz AV7005 with Klipsch Atmos speakers all powered by separate Marantz Mono Block 125-watt amps and a self-powered Klipsch 10" Sub. I'll be viewing it on a Sony Master Series A95 K OLED TV. Thanks for the detailed review.
Thanks! I picked mine up last week and watched it a few days ago. Good stuff! Most movies have a brief second here and there that you can point out to guests. However, this one has several long scenes that are terrific for overheads! Thanks for doing the comparisons of the two tracks. I've done similar with other movies and also noticed the "Bane" type dialogue.
I'm from the UK but I doubt there'll be a UK release so I ordered this the second I heard about it! Can't wait to hear for myself what everybody's been raving about!
Dear Blu Ray Gods, all i want is the Dolby Atmos version WITH 3D video.......is that too much to ask? That is how i remember the movie when i watched it at the cinema the decade or so ago that it came out.
I had the digital Atmos for years now, and was expecting to be blown away by the disc version, since it was going for over $100 for the Diamond Luxe. Even through my Trinnov, I was pretty disappointed with Atmos. I appreciate your honesty with the comparison of digital and disc. You can live with either. But I'll look elsewhere to demo my system.
I agree as well. I paid $160 for the diamond deluxe version two yrs ago. Watched it for 20mins and was not impressed one bit! Took the disk out and just stored it. Every 8months I re calibrate my system and pop the disk in again and still not impressed. While I'm watching this TH-cam video, I decided to look for the disk and try again for the 6th time in yrs. Still not happy. 😂
Hey Ealan in case you didn't know Rhino has 5 Blu-Ray music releases with Atmos. 4 available now and the 5th coming out in September. I ordered my 4 directly from them.
This re release looked and sounded great on my home theater, I'm currently running the 7.2.6 setup. If this re release was done by Disney/Buena Vista, they would've cut off the LFE channel at the 50 to 60hz mark.

Pretty much. But if you want to technical, “bed layer” is the 7.1 audio layer baked into your typical surround sound codec. So people with only in-ceiling speakers for a 5.1 or 7.1 layout technically wouldn’t have any “ear level” speakers, per sé. 😉
Question. I have a 2019 Sony X900F with TV ARC connection to my HT-A9 eARC. I'm pretty sure the TV supports DD+ (lossy Atmos). However, when I used the built-in Max app premium 4k subscription to play an Atmos movie, the HT-A9 only displays Dolby Audio with 360 special surround 48kHz. I know the unit works because it displays Atmos text in a sample test file. Shouldn't the TV be able to decode the lossy Atmos streaming content with DD+? If I buy a separate Chromecast with google TV 4k and plug it into the TVs HDMI, it should passthrough the Atmos from TV into my HT-A9 via its ARC right instead of direct HT-A9 connect. What is Dolby Atmos' real chanel count anyways? 7.1, 5.1.2, 7.1.2, 7.1.4? I have seen many receiver reviews literally showing Dolby digital, DD plus and Atmos when it receives the signal from a 4k Blu-ray player but I don't understand why sound bars and HT-A9 do not.
It might just be a software thing with the HT-A9 on choosing what to display. Lossy Atmos does travel over a streaming signal via DD+, so if it shows DD+, it should still technically be Atmos.
A Blu-Ray is released, I buy it... After a while, the same movie is released again... It's hard not to go crazy. This movie has been on Apple TV for a long time with Dolby Atmos. Ealon is already talking about it... Not one, not two, companies do this all the time.

I have the original diamond luxe edition and the silent space version is just in regular dolby ac3 at a measly 448kbps. So if you are getting atmos with it, you must be upscaling it with your av receiver. Maybe try other upscaling methods. Wonder how that silent version would sound trough the auro up-mixer.
Great review, thanks. I wish I could heap the same level of praise on the 3D version: It's *good* 3D, but not exactly the last word on how to do it brilliantly. Still, for me, the best version of this excellent film is the 3D copy re-muxed with the Atmos track.

Kaleidescape has the best version of this film. It's still listed as "HD" on Kaleidescape however the file size is 56.9GB. With that file size that would be on a BD 66 which is 4K.
No shame in that! This Blu-ray re-release is already selling like crazy, so I imagine it’ll be a good indicator that it would be well worth it to do a 4K remaster. 👍
The studio hasn’t remastered it yet. Alfonso Cuaron is very meticulous, so I imagine he’ll have to be part of the process, and they haven’t gotten around to it yet. 🤷♂️
Gravity is a great film. Why did this never come out in 4K? Ed Harris is permanently at the Hollywood NASA Mission Control Center, he’s been there since Apollo 13 was released in 1995.

The concept of the “silent space” version has puzzled me as I’ve not watched my copy yet. I would expect a lot of the audio to be gone there, not just the music but effect audio as well. Because sound doesn’t travel in space the only sounds one would hear is what is heard inside a helmet from the coms system and one’s own voice. So with a camera position out in space and not in a persons helmet there would be zero sound.
It’s kind of like that, yeah. Basically you hear chatter from everyone communicating through their helmets, some rumble from things hitting other things, etc. it’s not absolutely scientifically accurate of course, but it’s interesting. I watched the first 20 minutes, but will eventually watch the entire film that way, just to say that I’ve experienced it. 😄
Also, would love for you to try the atmos mix on the Bravia Quad if you still have it. Wonder how that beginning with George’s voice going trough the atmos speakers behaves on the Sony. That is the real test for these sound systems to see if they are able to put those sounds in the correct places.
They're mounted near the corner where the wall and ceiling meet, somewhat in line with the front left and right speakers(both front and rear heights), up 30 degrees from where my head rests when sitting at my main listening position. And they are assigned as "front height/rear height" in the AVR. Basically to Auro 3D specs, since I prefer their take on psychoacoustics, since it seems to work well.
Yeah, I believe it’s in HD on AppleTV since there hasn’t been an official 4K remastered version of this film. But with the popularity of people buying this re-release of the Blu-ray + Atmos soundtrack, I’m sure they’ll be working on a 4K remaster sooner than later. 👍
Hi Ealan, always nice to hear you. Unfortunately the Atmos BD here in Italy isn't 6,99 (which is the price of the normal BD with DTS-Master Audio) but more than 15€, which IMHO is too much for a 1080p BD and for a movie I already watched and didn't like that much. Is all that you described about the Atmos soundtrack valid also for the Apple TV+ streaming version (which is just 7,99, or even 3,99 if you choose to just rent it)?
If you have to watch this movie: 3D Bluray. The 3D makes this movie. Without it you start to notice how meh it is. It’s a bit like Avatar in that respect.
For me, one of the best things about having the Atmos channels externally amplified... when listening to a two-channel rendered movie no more having to put up with the same base level signal coming from The Heights. Up mixers are great for 5.1 movies, but IMO, this is where an internally amplified Dolby Atmos receiver falls by the wayside. Just wondering if that's what the 'front presence' is for.
Ealan is responsible for my system, his early videos on the Costco Klipsch speaker pack saved the day, saved me a few grand and got me a 7.2.4 system when I didn't think it was possible, love his videos.
Aside from the bigger scenes, it was cool seeing Sandra flip switches and controls above the camera view and hearing them specifically in the heights only.
Im so happy they released gravity with dolby atmos again. i finally listened to the dolby atmos track to see what the hype was about. It did not disappoint. This movie probably utilizes the height speakers the most out of all atmos movies. And for this movie for being as old as it is. I’m very surprised no new movies are using this as a reference. It’s simply amazing

Yeah, I believe it’s in HD on AppleTV since there hasn’t been an official 4K remastered version of this film. But with the popularity of people buying this re-release of the Blu-ray + Atmos soundtrack, I’m sure they’ll be working on a 4K remaster sooner than later. 👍

Hi Ealan, always nice to hear you. Unfortunately the Atmos BD here in Italy isn't 6,99 (which is the price of the normal BD with DTS-Master Audio) but more than 15€, which IMHO is too much for a 1080p BD and for a movie I already watched and didn't like that much.
Is all that you described about the Atmos soundtrack valid also for the Apple TV+ streaming version (which is just 7,99, or even 3,99 if you choose to just rent it)?

If you have to watch this movie: 3D Bluray. The 3D makes this movie. Without it you start to notice how meh it is. It’s a bit like Avatar in that respect.

For me, one of the best things about having the Atmos channels externally amplified... when listening to a two-channel rendered movie no more having to put up with the same base level signal coming from The Heights. Up mixers are great for 5.1 movies, but IMO, this is where an internally amplified Dolby Atmos receiver falls by the wayside. Just wondering if that's what the 'front presence' is for.
Ealan is responsible for my system, his early videos on the Costco Klipsch speaker pack saved the day, saved me a few grand and got me a 7.2.4 system when I didn't think it was possible, love his videos.

Aside from the bigger scenes, it was cool seeing Sandra flip switches and controls above the camera view and hearing them specifically in the heights only.
Im so happy they released gravity with dolby atmos again. i finally listened to the dolby atmos track to see what the hype was about. It did not disappoint. This movie probably utilizes the height speakers the most out of all atmos movies. And for this movie for being as old as it is. I’m very surprised no new movies are using this as a reference. It’s simply amazing
