I've been following Kevin M. for a long time on Paetreon. Actually had a direct chat with him...I have a Korg DW-8000 hybrid synth, the same as one of KM's synths he used on the Live in Tokyo, Japan video...was pretty cool to get to chat with him@@synen
Me too, a couple a times after Pull Me Under hit the airwaves, when they came through Dallas. They pulled off every bit of I&W flawlessly (including JLB vocals). Probably weren't more than 250 people at each show. Such a experience...I'm so grateful to have found them early.
Me too, at the (old) Cathouse in Glasgow, front row in front of Myung the whole gig. What a night!!! Got the ticket signed by the guys when I met them at a meet n greet in Glasgow a few years ago and James was blown away I still had the ticket, he even remembered that gig ;-) Great memories
Mangini has the technical ability no doubt, but Portnoy lines always had so much groove and just enough technicality and creativity to mesh with the rest of the band
I think that's still more than a little bit unfair: As I went on elsewhere on the comments, yes all of the best DT records were created with and in large portion by, Portnoy. However the band also produced less than stellar albums and tracks before he left DT so it's not *all* roses as people make it out to be. Same with Mangini: sure it wasn't an immediate fit at first but he did more than what he is now sadly reducing himself to in the press release 'fill in for Portnoy' he truly contributed in a big way to some of DT's greatest tracks in years so in my mind, he was with the band long enough to prove that he was more than just a drum professor at Berklee who decided to hit the roads with a metal band again: He's actually a really creative and innovative musician too pretty evenly matched with Portnoy also on the music, creativity and groove. So while I respect many of you are exited to see Portnoy back, I honestly feel many comments like this are going too far in the wrong direction kinda diminishing Mangini's role with the band revising more than a decade of tenure and his career as 'Yeah he was never as good as Portnoy' it's ok to say: No, he was and still is *at least just as good* but if the band wants to revive the older line up by all means. See how that comes across very differently than dismissing Mangini as 'has the technical ability no doubt'?
Dude, this video was dope AF. You are such a natural communicator and you totally nailed what I’ve felt. It’s not about who’s a better drummer at all…it’s just the vibe…the intangibles, including the type of musicality Mike usually brings in his orchestration…it’s that sound/ear Candy (not just for drummers). Someone made a video of Mangini and Portnoy’s Finally Free Outro. Drummers know how hard the stuff Mangini was playing is, but if you look at the band’s head bobbing with Portnoy-it just felt good even though it is a busy part. Anyway, did see you open for SOA, front row, and you Sir, are a beast!
Mike Mangini is an amazing drummer and Dream Theater was definitely losing its focus an inspiration right before Portnoy quit, but I'm excited for Portnoy to return. While people will argue endlessly about who is a more proficient drummer (almost certainly Mangini, though, at that level, it likely doesn't even matter), Mike Portnoy's bigger contribution is that he was actually directly involved in the song writing process. As a result, the drums lead songs in very interesting and memorable ways during the Portnoy era. In the Mangini era, Petrucci and Rudess write all the music first and then ask Mangini to lay down a drum track following a rough outline they prepare. Mangini always throws down a killer track, but this approach leads to far fewer truly interesting and memorable drum moments in Dream Theater songs since none of the song sections are written around the drums.
Yeah that’s true to an extent. Portnoy could groove and Mangini was more technical really. Mike is a songwriter though and that’s what the band has sorely needed more than JP leading the charge lately. I’m glad MP is back and I look forward to the next album
I always found portnoy more interesting to listen to as a drummer...mangini is definitely a great technician and a real monstet...portnoy added alot to the writing both lyrically and in the drum parts
Dude, after reading the news, I watched the entire Live Scenes Bonus and Budokan concerts yesterday. I'm so hyped for Portnoy's return! We've been waiting for this for over a decade. Let's goooo!
I'm so excited about Portnoy's return. I'm approaching 74 years old so I wonder if I'll get to see them live again. One of the things I would like to see on their live show is to bring the amplifiers and speakers back onto the stage, it adds to the atmosphere. I noticed on their newer shows the stage looked very empty and barren, it lacked the atmosphere of a live show. Does anyone else agree?
All that talk about Mike and John but the other John, John Myung, is the unsung hero to me. He is a beast on bass. He is the backbone that ties John and Mike with whomever their keyboardist was.
I hope they do, a lot of songs from AVFTTOTW and A dramatic turn of events are amazing. I just hope Portnoy can play them properly because he objectively doesn't have the chops for some parts in those songs.
I wouldn't count on it. They didn't write modern classics anyway since he left. Some good songs, but nothing great compared to DT's discography up until Black Clouds. No, they'll go for fresh post-reunion material & nostalgia material, I reckon.
@@sankharaYT Bunch of bs, I'd honestly say that songs like Awaken The Master, Pale Blue Dot, A View From The Top Of The World, Sleeping Giant, On The Backs Of Angels, Bridges In The Sky and especially Breaking All Illusions are around the same level as songs like Learning To Live, This Dying Soul, Glass Prison, Panic Attack and A Nightmare To Remember. Just relisten those songs.
@@jimit.4220I will surely re-listen to them at some point. It's not that I think they're bad. I'd agree that the songs you listed are good ones, and I mentioned they managed to write the occasional good ones after Portnoy left. But no, I do not think any of them is on the level of Learning To Live or Dying Soul or Glass Prison. Our mileage does vary it seems, which is fine.
The Budokan DVD was the point when I really fell in love with DT. I had listened to a few of their albums before, and Train of Thought was my favorite, but holy crap did the live setting blow me away. I became a super fan instantly.
I kinda of lost interest in dream theater around 10 years ago but I admit I’m excited about this. Last time I saw them live was great and I’ll definitely have to go to a show!
F Yeah!!! I saw this video and couldn't believe it! My son is a Dream Theater fan and the first thing I did was tell him! He was excited! I'm going to listen to the DT catalog in the next week. Thanks for posting this. I got almost as excited as you did!
This was a great video, really enjoyed it!!! Was shocked yesterday to see the news. Dream Theater also has a special place for me as well. I have been following them since the beginning. Petrucci, Myung, and Kevin Moore grew up in the town next to mine. Friends of mine took lessons from Petrucci. I have seen them perform When Day band Dream Unite totally instrumental because Charlie was no longer in the band, and that was a small venue at the front of the stage. That show changed my life. Also was at the Images and Words album release show at Sparks in Deer Park to be followed the next night with them opening up for Iron Maiden in NYC. I understand what you are feeling!
50/50 split feelings. Got 'into' DT with MP as the drummer and was sad when he left. I don't know which is the 'better' drummer (I play guitar not drums) they both sound amazing to me. MM seemed to bring so much enthusiasm and seemed to be such a nice guy. I hope the decision was as amicable as they are reporting it to be, I'd feel uncomfortable with MM getting 'thrown out' after everything he has contributed. Always a DT fan - best of luck to MM with whatever he does next.
I found out 2 months later from the announcement that Mike returned and the original 5 are back again. Hope to see some awesome tracks from DT once again with the original crew.
As hard as it was to learn of MP's departure - let us be mindful of one key element. Only Mangini could have stepped in the role and filled MP's shoes and by doing so he helped keep DT alive and gave them renewed vigor. I was there for Mangini's first live with DT in Rome and the one thing that struck me - they all seemed very happy and all of them - including Myung - kept checking up on Mangini to see how he was doing. I too had a hard time adjusting to his new tone but his contribution to the bands music of that era cannot be denied. They won the Grammy with him after all. I am happy that MP has found his way back into DT but I will be forever grateful to Mangini for doing and contributing his all to keep the band and it's music alive. I truly wish him all the best and would love to see some concerts where he and MP are on stage together.....
Cool thanks and also love the Primus ones Les the master! Also you should do the new supergroup called Darwin with Mohíni Dey check out the video for soul police very DT esque! Rock on!
Saw them 2 times with Mangini, but now i´m really excited to hopefully catch them live with Portnoy. I hope they do have another great album in them to go on tour with. As big of a fan as i am the last albums weren´t all that great. Thanks for the video, brought back lots of memories listening to DT back when i was in school.
I knew you were going to make a video on this!! I definitely remember where I was when Mike left, it hurt and thought they were done, so glad Portnoy is back home! I swear I knew you were going to give us a DT song today because of this!! It’s because of Portnoy we have this track and crazy songs like this, they haven’t written anything super special and epic since he left, of course some yes but nothing compares, the 12 step suit, all because of portnoy, and so many others that tie into other songs we have not had ANY of that since Portnoy left, it’s what made DT so unique,
DT, the best there were, there are and there ever will be for the genre of progressive metal and beyond! And now with Portnoy again. Very thrilling and exciting. Your comment is exactly true for me at 2010. It hit me like an earthquake. But Mangini did a great job with DT, a beast of a drummer!
Man, I had the exact same reaction that you did when MP left the band. The announcement of his return was on my birthday, and truthfully i was struck speechless when I heard the news. I'm so darn excited for what they put out next
A Change of Seasons is certainly one of their best songs ever! Didn't know it was supposed to be on Images and Words. I can't wait to hear what they create next! A motivated, and reformed Portnoy, back where he belongs! Thanks for this vid! Haven't heard these songs in a while and it's bringing back some great memories
I'm just excited to see what drum kit he comes up with for the tour!! Would he get a new one or would he bring back one of the most iconic kits he had?
So happy he’s back it’s going to be insane. I love this live video as well I hit a phase where I watched it religiously. Also surprised to see how big this is on social media. Really shows how many people they’ve inspired. Saw posts from members of Angra (a band I love), many drummers who have a following online, every metal magazine. Good time to be a DT fan.
I met them on the Images tour twice and they were a down to earth group of guys. I was blown away by the performance. Myung had changed bass completely for me on When Dream and Day Unite came out so seeing him live was insane. I used to slowmo his 3 finger technique when their concert video came out on VHS (yes, VHS) so I could see what in the world he was doing. He fingers seemed like an optical illusion because I never knew anyone did that, or could. Mangini is a great drummer and he fit with DT, but long time fans have been waiting for this for years. Nothing against Mangini. I really hope he gets in another band and continue to create great drums.
Amazing. Wish I was old enough to have seen that era live, like many of my favorite bands. Myung’s instructional VHS was also highly inspiring for me. I wore that thing out. On a side note about Mangini - I just saw a video of him on stage filling in with some other band. Something for Pearl drums, like a promo maybe? Either way, the way he conducted himself in DT, having the Grammy win - he will easily pivot into a killer gig. I feel like he can land anywhere he wants at this point.
What! WHAT! I DIDN'T KNOW! This is such a great news! I'm so happy! Ahhh! I saw DT with Mangini once and it was a blast and almost cried when they played The Spirit Carries On. However, I saw Portnoy once with Haken in a tribute concert to Dream Theater and I did enjoy that one more overall. It was beautiful. Also, Hell's Kitchen is my favorite instrumental song by them, so I agree. Extremely underrated.
The first time I saw DT was in Baltimore Md in 2000 when I was 36 years old. I had been working at my church and took a break to TRY the church's kit. That day, I decided to go to my favorite instrument shop that the young, 20 something drummer from my church worked for. After I decided on my Pearl Export kit with him, he told me of a free clinic that Rod Morgenstein and Mike Portnoy were doing at the store, and the free double bill show at a small club the next night. I got to see the Dregs and Dream Theater who blew my mind especially since I could wander as close as possible for the best vantage points among roughly 200-300 people max. I knew the Dixie Dregs from my youth, but had never heard of DT or any of their material. Fan from that day on.
0:26 I felt the exact same thing! I've been living my daily basis with their music since the 90's and when the _ bomb exploded_ I felt really hart-broken.
SOOOOOOOOOooooooooo glad Portnoy is back with DT. All 4 of these guys are masters of their instruments and it is clearly on display in Instrumedley. I can't wait to see them live again w/ Portnoy... it's been toooooo long!
Feel the same way you do on a lot of this. I remember learning this instrumedley years ago using the Myung angle video for reference. Lot of fun, but that Dance of Eternity riff that starts at 25:18 is one of the hardest things I've ever had to play even now. I remember spending a few weeks just trying to get that one section down. What a fucking beast.
It's interesting seeing all this discourse of Portnoy coming back. I've known about Dream Theater forever but only got into them recently. Like, very recently... "A View From The Top Of The World" recent lmao. Previously, I had only known Pull Me Under from Guitar Hero. I've tried to listen to them in the past, but they just never clicked with me. I don't know how many times I've listened to Octavarium (or why I kept going back to that album?), but it's definitely more than once, and I still can't conjure any of those songs to mind lol. Eventually I watched a video by Shawn Crowder (drummer for Sungazer and studied under Mike Mangini) where he discussed and analyzed The Alien. That was finally my moment where I loved their sound. The drumming technicality, the grooves, polyrhythms, odd times... It was an amazing introduction to the band. THEN I learned Mangini wasn't even the original drummer. So I've still got some listening to do. I listened to "Images and Words" today and loved every song. Can definitely feel the Rush influence (especially with the vocals!) and I can even feel some of the Extreme influence. It's time I do my diligence and go through their catalog! Mangini's drumming is what pulled me into this band, but I'm excited to see if Portnoy still holds up!
This instrumedley video is the best thing DT has ever done live...gets me every time. This is why Portnoy is so essential to the band, he brought that element of surprise and spontaneity to the live shows that you just didn't get during the Mangini era. Those little quirks and eccentricities, like playing the theme to the Simpsons in the middle of A Change of Seasons, are what make the DT live experience so special. JP has been my favorite guitarist since middle school but very few people in any band work as hard as Portnoy when it comes to serving the fans.
Saw the Images and Words tour and Awake tour. After that lost a bit of interest but got back again listening and after living in China I got back home to Sweden last year and saw the A view of the top of the world tour with Mangini. Super exited to have Portnoy back.
27:00 I'm in the same boat as you. I really like FII. I understand it was a tumultuous time in the band's career - a major turning point, really - but that album has some solid, great songwriting on it. It showcased that DT can absolutely go more "accessible" if they want... and still produce amazing music.
Wow i didn't expect this news. But I'm not surprised to hear it here first. This is the only band you've ever listened to. Are DT your favorite band? Seems that way. As much as it's fun watching you discover things you've never heard, i think i like watching you get into the songs you know and love even more.
Homie, it was just this past summer we saw DT in Texas for the DreamSonic tour and it was fantastic and great to see you and Brooks. But now I can't wait to finally see them with MP. Maybe we'll run into each other again at a DT show soon.
Little did we know that was the last time we'd see them with Mangini...I've thought a lot about this today. Life is wild. Great to see you man, glad we got a pic together! And, of course we'll cross paths again!
My wife and I saw Dream Theater around 2007. Opening band was Redemption with Ray Alder from Fates Warning. Their track Bleed Me Dry is amazing. Great bass and drumming. I love Falling into Infinity.
Dude!!! I got into Redemption purely from that tour. Had never heard of them before - I fell in love with their bassist at the time - he had some insanely cool covers up on TH-cam. As I said in the video, Dream Theater speaking both about their influences and taking out smaller bands has widened my musical scope so much. Last but not least...I also LOVE Falling Into Infinity!
As someone who does not appreciate the Mangini era I can say I've been waiting for this moment for 13 years. I'm so happy I even forgot the biggest issue with DT nowadays, called James Labrie. DT now has it's original drummer, not just some technical robot that can emulate other people's stuff.B
Gotta say...as a fellow bass player, I totally agree with pretty much everything you said in this video. Including your comment that Falling Into Infinity is very under-rated. There are several tracks on that album that I really love, and have since I bought the CD on the day of its release, when I was visiting family in Lafayette Louisiana. As you pointed out...Mangini is a human metronome...and that is friggin' amazing. But MP has a vibe to his playing that you just can't replicate. Super excited to hear that Mike P. is back in the band...right where he should be.
I'd be the controversial one and throw it out there: There really was no big *need* to get Portnoy back in the band *this far into Mangini's tenure* imho: Yes the first couple albums with Mangini were noticeable off compared to some of the best Portnoy records (Which are some of the best metal records ever full stop) but I do feel like Mangini's style and decisions were already mature enough to be a great fit for modern Dream Theater. Like I love what Portnoy did with DT but I also have not forgotten the sub-par last couple albums around the time he left and ever since Dream Theater has honestly continued to be hit-and-miss album to album with some great ones and some not so much just as that time period so I honestly: 1) We can't blame some of the sub-par albums on Portnoy or 2) We can't blame some of the sub-par newer albums on Mangini So with all that being said, other than the publicity of a new album and tour with Portnoy, does anyone honestly think it will revitalize Dream Theater to be a top-notch band releasing banger after banging as in their 1999-2005 era? Because I don't think that's going to happen. End of the day this is just as much about Mangini losing a job he was more than qualified and perfectly fit for as much as it is Portnoy coming back so I don't really feel comfortable celebraing him as much as seemingly everybody will be.
Myung slaps on One Last Time but the mix doesn't make it obvious. During the guitar solo, he does some funky runs and a few slaps. Sounds really cool, wish it was louder so more people notice. Also Falling Into Infinity is incredible and JM's tone is killer. I often use the isolated tracks to try and match tone with because I think it's perfect.
I became a fan of Dream Theater when Live Scenes from New York came out but I never managed to see them live until Mangini came aboard, in the Summer of 2011, and then again in 2014. Hopefully I'll get to see them in the near future with Portnoy behind the drumkit. That would mean travelling abroad as on both previous occassions, unless they come to Costa Rica.
I saw them back in NY, it's so sad I can't even remember the year but it was at a bus terminal, I was on the second floor just enjoying all the panorama below and every little detail of the band and I remember if I'm correct, Opeth was with them in that concert along with 2 other new bands at the time, Imagine being in a concert with DT for your first time live? talk about pressure on doing things right and trying to sound good? unbearable, but they all did right and put on a great concert!! will never forget
Saw STS open for DT when Jordan was still playing bass for them, there was also Zappa plays Zappa and Big Elf, such a cool show. So surprised and happy that MP is now back in Dream Theater!
I started listening to DT in 1992 when Images and Words was released. Like countless others, I was just blown away, and they became my favorite band instantly. I was 16 years old then. To this day DT remained in my top 2 favorite bands. When I saw this news yesterday, I was just in shock, couldn't believe it was real, thought it was a joke. I'm still in shock more than 24h later. I love Mike Mangini, kinda feel sad that his tenure in DT is over, his contribution was fantastic. But man, Mike Portnoy is DT! I was pissed off when he left, and how he left, but that is all forgotten and not important now, prodigal son is back! I can't wait to see them together again on stage, think I'm gonna cry. Just a thought of it makes my eyes wet. I have the same situation in my other most favorite metal band, Nightwish. I love Kai Hahto, amazing drummer. But if Jukka came back, I would have the same reaction. His presence and energy on stage was next level. One wish came true, who knows, maybe one day the other one will to!
I saw them twice with Portnoy "Awake" and "Six degrees" amazed at what I saw being a drummer but Mangini never had that for me. Just saw them with Devin and Tosin and wish Portnoy would have been there even though I did get to see the insane Math Garsksa😅 Everyone were amazingly talented musicians.....AAL was incredible!!!
I saw DT quite a few times with Portnoy, including the I&W, Awake, FII and SFAM tours. Mangini is a technical beast and awesome person, but Portnoy is back home where he belongs. MP was the social voice of the band for so many years, with his involvement in the ytsejam mailing list, and later his forum. It was MP that brought us all those great Christmas extras on CD. Loved the FII bonus tracks and demos.
I had a feeling, after learning Portnoy and Pettrucci had been playing and hanging out, that it was only a matter of time before Portnoy came back. I'm glad he did. My anger and disappointment with him leaving left years ago. I'm just glad the best version of DT, to me, is back together. I can't wait to see them live again. "Thank you" goes to Mangini for filling in and keeping the band going for his tenure. I still say he was the best choice to replace Portnoy when the abrupt change happened. But, he's just not Portnoy.
Portnoy is back where he belongs nothing DT while he was gone and nothing MP did while he was gone was as good as what they did as a unit. P.S. watching your joy in this video was infectious and made me smile the whole way thru.
There is something special about Falling Into Infinity, specifically what the “prog-pop” aspect of that album allowed both Myung and Sherinian to do. The bass grooves, the piano lines. That album is special and unique!
MP is home! I thought it was a joke when i read that first headline. This has been the hardest year of my entire life and im so happy that the universe found balance once again by bringing our boy home where he belongs.
A super video from a DT-expert who knows what he says! 💪🏻👏🏻👍🏻 Happy to have Portnoy back again and can‘t await the new album. DT couldn’t have had a better substitute than Mangini who did a perfect job, but there was a little difference, there was sth. that only Portnoy could do! I can’t put that in words! However, VIVA DREAM THEATER, the musicians from outer space!
This is my favorite song to play on drums by them , and this performance is arguably peak dream theater, and definitely peak JP style... Looks so bad ass with the short hair, but damn his arms look so much smaller lol. I think the next album will be amazing, MP surely has a catalog of lyrics and song ideas he's worked on the last 13 years, and they probably also had material they were working on before he left the band.
JP once commented that one of the keys to their live performances is ENDURANCE. He likened it to running a marathon, then running right into a gymnastic floor routine. They play like this for hours, and the songs don't get easier as they go!
5:07 I think Myung was slapping on the song "Dark Eternal Night" aswell. Well at least he was rather popping the strings but anyway it's still part of the slapping technique :D
I feel like the Petrucci solo TOUR had more to do with it than the LTE 3. You spend A LOT of time together when you're on the road. Whereas, I think a lot of the studio stuff was done at home during the lock downs.
I remember where I was when I heard the news. Just woke up, checked my phone. Read it. Told my gf what happened. Her response was: Are You Okay? She knew how much DT meant to me. I’ve been to 2 meet and greets with Mangini era DT. I’m really hoping I get a chance to do one with Portnoy. I’ve seen a couple Portnoy era shows but never met the guy. It would be so fantastic to get that picture on my wall.
New to your channel.... I really would have like to have heard "Hear to Infinity" had it been produced by the late Kevin Gilbert as MP mentioned in the biography
I saw them when Kevin Moore was still the keyboardist, in a small club. It was amazing!

absolutely.. the magic was gone during the mangini era...
All that talk about Mike and John but the other John, John Myung, is the unsung hero to me. He is a beast on bass. He is the backbone that ties John and Mike with whomever their keyboardist was.
I wonder if they'll play any of the Mangini-era songs live moving forward?
I hope they do, a lot of songs from AVFTTOTW and A dramatic turn of events are amazing. I just hope Portnoy can play them properly because he objectively doesn't have the chops for some parts in those songs.
I wouldn't count on it. They didn't write modern classics anyway since he left. Some good songs, but nothing great compared to DT's discography up until Black Clouds. No, they'll go for fresh post-reunion material & nostalgia material, I reckon.
I’m sure they will cause some people still like them. Goes for any band with member changes either long in their career or short
Note!: Myung slaps again at the 2:09 mark in One Last Time from scenes from a memory! Great video too man, love watching your vids!
Typical fanboy. Let me guess?!?!? Petrucci and DT is all of a sudden going to appeal to you now cause douchebag is back??? Funny.
100%. I liked ADTOE but after self titled they sorta dropped off the radar for me. Looking forward to seeing what they do next.
Yea, but they need to hire some young producer ASAP, because petrucci is hogging the tone, everything sonuds so bland and souless
F Yeah!!! I saw this video and couldn't believe it! My son is a Dream Theater fan and the first thing I did was tell him! He was excited! I'm going to listen to the DT catalog in the next week. Thanks for posting this. I got almost as excited as you did!
Loved Dramatic Turn, loved The Astonishing, and many songs from the other albums, but I am very excited for the next album with the classic crew!
Nice comment
MM with probably either go back to teaching at Burkley or Retire. That's what I would do if I were him.
@@bassplayer2011ify Maybe. Whatever he does I hope he is happy - DT keep on making great music - and everyone stays friends.
I found out 2 months later from the announcement that Mike returned and the original 5 are back again. Hope to see some awesome tracks from DT once again with the original crew.
I hope so too!
technically Labrie and Rudess are not original members either, but obviously this is the classic lineup we're all the most familiar with
@@paramourcatMy point and I know.
DT really helped me become a more mature musician, not only on my attitude, but discipline and mentally as well. DT4EVER
Perfectly stated!
At 14:41 the Rudes solo is from Liquid Tension Experiment 2: when the water breaks (ending)
Love your channel and very entertaining for me as a DT fan!
Awesome! Thank you! I did Metropolis and Glass Prison too awhile back - hope you can check them out!

That's really cool info. That's the tour I discovered Scale the Summit! Saw the show in Asheville and got pics with the band. Super cool😎
Bells rang out, a chorus of holy angels descended from heaven singing pull me under when I heard the news. Truly amazing news.
I heard the news online about 6:00 this morning. I was so excited I started sending messages to all my friends.
What!
Extremely underrated.
me too, when i heard his back, i post to 3 of my social media ac.
So glad you did this video today. First time I saw them was on their 25th anniversary tour right before Portnoy left.
As soon as I saw the news I watched the drum cam video of the Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence medley they did

YES! Falling to infinity is in my top 5
I smiled the entire time watching this video. Pretty sure I saw DT on that same Prog Nation tour in 2009. I'm so excited for Portnoy's return!
0:26 I felt the exact same thing! I've been living my daily basis with their music since the 90's and when the _ bomb exploded_ I felt really hart-broken.
THIS IS DREAM THEATER, THE REAL DREAM THEATER. I`M REALY EXCITED FOR THE RETURN OF MIKE PORTNOY. YEEEAAAAA
Now my DREAM come true ❤
yea. The spitting on gear, controlling clown is back. blah blah blah.
Guitar player DT fan here - absolutely love your reaction here!
SOOOOOOOOOooooooooo glad Portnoy is back with DT. All 4 of these guys are masters of their instruments and it is clearly on display in Instrumedley. I can't wait to see them live again w/ Portnoy... it's been toooooo long!
I hope they don't stop playing songs during the Mangini era on tour
I bet MP is excited to learn some of them!
I just watched this about a week ago. Still highly motivating!
Like I love what Portnoy did with DT but I also have not forgotten the sub-par last couple albums around the time he left and ever since Dream Theater has honestly continued to be hit-and-miss album to album with some great ones and some not so much just as that time period so I honestly:
1) We can't blame some of the sub-par albums on Portnoy or
2) We can't blame some of the sub-par newer albums on Mangini
So with all that being said, other than the publicity of a new album and tour with Portnoy, does anyone honestly think it will revitalize Dream Theater to be a top-notch band releasing banger after banging as in their 1999-2005 era? Because I don't think that's going to happen.
End of the day this is just as much about Mangini losing a job he was more than qualified and perfectly fit for as much as it is Portnoy coming back so I don't really feel comfortable celebraing him as much as seemingly everybody will be.
😂
Myung slaps on One Last Time but the mix doesn't make it obvious. During the guitar solo, he does some funky runs and a few slaps. Sounds really cool, wish it was louder so more people notice.
Also Falling Into Infinity is incredible and JM's tone is killer. I often use the isolated tracks to try and match tone with because I think it's perfect.
In my opinion Falling Into Infinity is one of the best produced albums ever
I knew Dt in Budokan Show...
So amazing and Nostalgic.
This show , this perform ... simple amazing.
Do more DT!🙌🏻
The count of Tuscany and Bridges in the sky!
🤙🏻
I became a fan of Dream Theater when Live Scenes from New York came out but I never managed to see them live until Mangini came aboard, in the Summer of 2011, and then again in 2014. Hopefully I'll get to see them in the near future with Portnoy behind the drumkit. That would mean travelling abroad as on both previous occassions, unless they come to Costa Rica.
I saw them back in NY, it's so sad I can't even remember the year but it was at a bus terminal, I was on the second floor just enjoying all the panorama below and every little detail of the band and I remember if I'm correct, Opeth was with them in that concert along with 2 other new bands at the time, Imagine being in a concert with DT for your first time live? talk about pressure on doing things right and trying to sound good? unbearable, but they all did right and put on a great concert!! will never forget
my god yes, the live at budokan, was amazing, I remember watching it over and over
Saw STS open for DT when Jordan was still playing bass for them, there was also Zappa plays Zappa and Big Elf, such a cool show. So surprised and happy that MP is now back in Dream Theater!
Saw Scenes from a Memory live. They encored with A Change of Seasons. Still one of my favorite concerts next to Phish in Chicago 2000.
Saw Change of seasons as the encore on the Images 25 tour. Mind blowing
2009 was the first time I saw DT on the same tour. So happy MP is back in the band.
I am so EXCITED.
Couldn’t have said this any better. Can’t wait to see him on stage with them again!
Portnoy is back where he belongs nothing DT while he was gone and nothing MP did while he was gone was as good as what they did as a unit. P.S. watching your joy in this video was infectious and made me smile the whole way thru.
Portnoy is the weak part of DT technically.
@@malawigw yeah someone else came up with those killer drum parts and showed him how to play.
When I first saw the announcement, I thought it was a joke. Mangini is a fantastic drummer, but the music was VERY different when he left.
A Change of Seasons is performed on the Scenes From New York DVD. So you can find it easily on TH-cam.
What amazing news!
I believe John myung slaps tritone chords in the main verse on dark eternal night
There is something special about Falling Into Infinity, specifically what the “prog-pop” aspect of that album allowed both Myung and Sherinian to do. The bass grooves, the piano lines. That album is special and unique!
Derek Sherinian is a rock star. His contribution to FII are underrated...particularly the humor...and his interpretation of ACoS still blows me away.
Hells kitchen into Lines in the sand is one of my favorite dream theater moments
MP is home! I thought it was a joke when i read that first headline. This has been the hardest year of my entire life and im so happy that the universe found balance once again by bringing our boy home where he belongs.
I saw them for the first time in 94, the Awake tour, with Fates Warning. Kevin Moore was still playing Keys.
Me too 😊
A super video from a DT-expert who knows what he says!
I saw them 3 times on Images and Words tour before they went huge. It was mind blowing, and so many people missed it.
Good GOD I’m so jealous of that.
Mangini was in DT. Portnoy WAS DT!
I also saw DT at the Tower Theater in Philly before Mangini came on board.
JP once commented that one of the keys to their live performances is ENDURANCE.
He likened it to running a marathon, then running right into a gymnastic floor routine.
They play like this for hours, and the songs don't get easier as they go!
How these guys remember all the millions of notes to play just boggles my mind.
a change of seasons is THE best dream theater song... it gets me every single time, its so sad....
5:07 I think Myung was slapping on the song "Dark Eternal Night" aswell. Well at least he was rather popping the strings but anyway it's still part of the slapping technique :D
What people miss is that Portnoy is a good writer and will change the music from most of the stale stuff from the last 14 years.
It’d be awesome if Mangini could take his place in Sons of Apollo
Infinity is a AWESOME record.... criminally undrated....
Agreed With you 100%....six degrees, falling into infinity....portnoy influece on songwriting..🙏👏👏👏. Just happy
Dream Theater and Primus are the bands that make me wanna learn a song everytime i listen to one, when i listen to then i remember why i play bass
*child-like grinning* I'm feeling it too!!!
The instrumedley is insane. I've finally learned it on drums. Only took 6 years. Haha
New to your channel....
I really would have like to have heard "Hear to Infinity" had it been produced by the late Kevin Gilbert as MP mentioned in the biography
