Imagine you're the super-friendly kid with the biggest garden on the street. You have a jungle gym with a cool big slide, you have skipping ropes, soccer goals, a paddling pool, your parents provide sweets and sandwiches and ALL your pals are welcome to come round and play. Its a great time! They even want to bring their own fun toys with them so there's plenty to go around. Your parents never ask for a thing in return, because they know they've got it good here, and are happy to share. This is OGL 1.0.
...But then your folks split up and your new CEO step-dad moves in. That Jungle Gym is starting to rust and he is too cheap to replace it. That football is punctured and he doesn't care. Birds are pooping in the pool and he won't clean it. Now he's telling your friends they need to pay for the sweets and sandwiches. Oh, and he's somehow now claiming ownership of the toys your friends brought over! Some of your friends can afford the candy, but the fact is, suddenly, your garden isn't fun to play in anymore and all the kids want to go elsewhere. You're stuck alone with no friends in a garden full of weeds and run-down toys, all because some guy was too cheap to share. Your name is WOTC, and this is OGL 1.1

Personally I want to see an Open TTRPG Alliance formed. Basically a non-profit organization staffed by various publishers, creators, and DMs from the TTRPG community tasked with creating a core set of rules and content that everyone in the TTRPG community could build upon. The core rules and content would be released under an open license like the Creative Commons BY license (the one that allows for commercial use). This would prevent the current situation from ever happening again as no one publisher would control the system.

    • @bocconom

Devil's advocate here... can't you just ignore the mechanics and use their fluff with any system you like anyway? I mean, I did that for years with Rifts before they finally allowed Savage Worlds to apply a more modern set of rules to their setting.

To be fair, maybe the vast majority of paying DMs want the monsters stat'ed, but not me.

I'd rather have creators work together on a creative commons open system than have everyone create their own system which you can do with or without the OGL anyway. The whole point of OGL is to have a common system in which multiple creators can contribute. Having creators shatter into multiple systems doesn't help with that and doesn't really solve what will be lost with the loss of the OGL, a community developed game.

There are already several other rules systems that people can turn to as an alternative to 5E. FATE, GURPS, and Cypher System just to name a few. I guess that having an in house system for Kobold Press gives them greater control over it though.

    • @Skywatcher16

thats not kobold press's fault. thats squarely on WotC. if they and their hasbro overlords hadnt tried to quite literally STEAL peoples content and incomes among many other problematic things with the leaked "open" game license, we wouldnt be happening in the first place. ive no doubt in my mind that all the content creators currently leaving or turning on WotC would have much preferred to continue on course. but then hasbro came in and demanded a sudden hard to starboard throwing everyone off the boat in the process.

I'm taking Project Black Flag to *also* mean that Kobold Press are giving the OGL 1.1 the middle finger, and won't be publishing any future content for 5e?
Huge blow for D&D if so. Imagine if outside of the context of the OGL furore, arguably THE biggest 3rd-party publisher announced "we're having nothing more to do with D&D anymore". What kind of message does that say about D&D's value? Especially now?

🏴‍☠TH-cam does not appreciate HL Mencken's line that involve spitting on hands. But it has been time for a long time coming. We should have done this with 4e, and we did, then we forgot. So many fell over themselves to play the dumbed down 5e. That it took most gamers this long to remember that WotC is not your friend, it's not your buddy, it's a corporate entity that needs to turn a profit does not shock, just disappoints. This was always a hobby of renegades, of outsiders. We were the underground, the rebels, the guerillas. We started with piracy, and what we couldn't steal, we made. Cast off the jewels and fine robes, discard the canned crap adventures. Lets go back to our roots.

This isn't going to fix the underlying issue. You can never trust any company with this, not even a company you own yourself. It's always easy to think your idealism is so strong you're going to refuse that corporate check of 10 million dollars - because such a thing is not on the table. But as soon as actual money is involved, you start to think about the good things you can do with that for your spouse, your kids, your parents - things change. And no hard feelings, but that's just the reality of doing business. Nobody is going to outsmart 400 years of corporate law under capitalism.

Sad that companies like Kobold press are whining about not making content for DnD anymore. The fact they waited till now to do something like this shows they never had it in them to begin with. The OSR movement has been going for years, independent RPGs have been already making huge waves and they didn't need to cry about Hasbro rules to do it.

I really hope creators band togather on this , and not just have a dozen of similar system to compete with each other, I'm sure paizo will do similar things with pathfinder since pathfinder 2e is abit far from dnd and it's easier to pull away
And there are alot of systems people talk about like shadow of the weird wizard (shadow of the demon lord generic fantasy brother )
    Like 13th age
    Castles and Crusades
    And many MANY more
And who knows maybe mcdm or critical role go ahead and make their own stuff
The point is , everyone would want to replicate what paizo did with dnd4e but with a open license, and I really hope we'll get the same one system that most people adopt because if they still compete with one another with no real one arising as the industry favorite, then they won't really compete with DnD
I really wish if kobold press , mcdm , critical role and more creators just band togather to make "the open system" , I know it's propably hard but I can dream
