Brilliant guide clip. Easy to understand and with the camera work makes it clear what needs to be done and how to maintain a good cutting chain and how to do it. All the info went straight in memo bank no problems. Thanks for taking the time
Possibly one of the better explanations on youtube. So many of this types of videos do not explain what or why you do what you need to to sharpen. And you discuss depth gauges, good job! Good video!
Probably the most helpful and well explained video i have seen on this subject. so much of this goes un-noticed and not taught enough. This information can save a lot of personal injury damage. Hats off to you Mr Reynolds. Great rant, Great video.
Andy, great video thank you! +1 subscriber. The views from the back of teeth showing the hook or lack thereof is great. That giant cutter is awesome to use as a visual!
Hi Andy, just wanted to say a big thank you for this series of videos, I have my assessment in a couple of days, and your videos have been an excellent preparatory aid! atb and thanks again, Louis.
Hi. Thanks for the message. An assessor is looking to see that you know what you are doing. Stay calm and steady, moving from one operation to another smoothly. Don't rush and enjoy the day. Cheers
Lovely! Like a professional approach! Piece of mind: never heard about a filed metal dust which falls down into the bar's grove! I sharp the chain separately from the unit on a "sharpening bar" used with a tentioning jig, and wash it in a kerosene from dust, than oil it! Few extra procedures, but it worth it: can not allow metal dust to be in!
Hi, in my opinion tapping the burr is left over from when the chrome on the top plate was rather weak and would peal off. This does not seem to be the case any more, so I just leave it, cheers
Fine lesson thank you; can you tell me if the sharpening technique is different with the square chisel cutters? Or are they all sharpened with a round file, thanks:)
Hi, all chainsaw cutters, both chisel and semi chisel are sharpened with a round file, the size depends on the chain pitch. See this link to my chain ident video: th-cam.com/video/hilTnXQwV54/w-d-xo.html, cheers
The best way to sharpen a chainsaw chain is with a Dremel tool with a Dremel chainsaw sharpening stone (I learned this from a Stihl mechanic). Doing it with the Dremel tool is three times faster than doing it with a file, plus it doesn't take off as much metal so your chain lasts longer, plus you don't have to put the saw in a vice, or take the chain off the bar. You can buy a Dremel tool and the sharpening stones at Lowe's or Home Depot in the tool section. Dremel makes three different sizes of chainsaw sharpening stones. Stihl makes a Dremel type tool that runs on 12 V. and has battery clips for attaching to a car battery. It will accept the Dremel sharpening stones. Once you get the hang of using a Dremel tool this way you'll never touch another chainsaw file. After sharpening the chain two or three times you'll have to trim the drag links a little to get the teeth to bite. You can use the fat end of the sharpening stone to trim the drag links. To get the proper angle keep the stone the same angle as the line on the cutting tooth (i.e. on a Stihl chain) and hold the Dremel motor at a slight downward angle. You'll figure it out.
If you're using a Dremel tool to sharpen a chainsaw chain you don't have a clue as to how a sharp chain should cut. I've been a hand cutter for 34 years
I like that big tooth, would love to own the saw that it came from.... I was going to do a similar video, but have just sharpened all my chains, so have not got any bad examples... and there were a few.. Thanks
I have a neighbor that would rather wear out his chainsaw than sharpen it.I sharpen it for him sometimes just so I dont have to hear him cut up a log for 2 hours. The man is 60 years old.He should know better by now..lol
@@TheInfoworks ...just!!!...just bought a brand new chain saw and the chain is blunt!!... didnt realise until i started to use it...have you heard this from anyone else??
No, I've not heard of that but they are always sharper wsith a file than factory, don't get offended but are the cutters facing forwards on the top of the bar? Cheers
@@TheInfoworks not offended ì was careful with the assembly and there is an image on the bar showing correct orientation of the chain...i will have a go sharpening tomorrow as i have 8 cubic meters of wood to cut for the winter...thanks once again for the advice
@@TheInfoworks hi andy..just for completeness ..i discovered that the wrong file size was supplied in the tool kit !!... using the correct file i made the chain razor sharp and cut 0.5 cubic meters of wood in just a few minutes...thanks once again!!
Well presented and presented 😊

@@TheInfoworks I would prefer to have 5 chains than to sharp on the oiled bar of the unit! To change the dull chain takes faster than to sharp it!

Nice explanation Andy. After sharpening your tooth, do you tap the burr of chromium off the opposite side of the tooth, or just leave it ?
Hi, in my opinion tapping the burr is left over from when the chrome on the top plate was rather weak and would peal off. This does not seem to be the case any more, so I just leave it, cheers

I ran across a boat builder that sharpens a chain in a bench vise. It reduces wobble as opposed to filing it in the guide bar. What are your thoughts?
Hi, anything to hold the saw, when at home I use the leg vice in the yard (seen in the solar boom repair video) cheers.
Great job Andy, love it!

Brilliant video, I'd love to spend a day in the workshop with you.
Nice clear explanation and great props. Recommend this guy pay to have his chains sharpened. How much damage to piston and cylinder?
I supect there may be some wear to the front piston skirt but it ran OK so did not investigate further. Thanks for the appreciation, Cheers, Andy

Thanks for the comment, hows the experimenting going? Cheers
It looks as though they were using 1/2 of the file guide flat on the top plate of the tooth, and yes, the other end up in the air..
Hi, they used a 5.5mm file, but no guide and so allowed the file to drift up, cheers

I guess where the top plate meets the gob is a chisel. Without it, it will hammer into the wood and will upset the whole lot.
