    This is an outstanding review, Josh! The way you broke the gaming experience down - including your experiences and opinions on the headphone's dynamic range capabilities and why it could actually be detrimental to games - was very well done. Most people assume only imaging and sound stage capabilities matter for gaming, but you really got in depth here. I wish other reviewers would take the time to do this. Well done sir!

      Hifiman Ananda for a great all arounder in casual or competitive play, Ether CX for a closed back alternative although it is more for the competitive side of gaming, and the AKG K712 or K7XX as almost a “starter” version of the Ananda.
      The AKG k712 is similar to the Ananda in that in both do casual and competitive gaming well but just misses on a bit of accuracy when things in game are happening directly in front of you

    I have a problem buying audeze. They always breaking. Too much of a risk imo. hd800S alllll the way. Currently using my aeolus. Imo zmf and sennheiser is the best in the business for headphones in terms of QC, customer service, sound, build. If you look at others like focal, Hifiman, audeze. They all struggle with qc, reliability...they sound good but the question how long? Meanwhile sennheiser is built like tanks and zach at zmf offers lifetime warranty on drivers

    I own the LCD-GX. I found that they really shine when hooked up to a tube amp. Solid State amps make it sound boring, while a good tube amp really brings it to life. Also, with most Audeze you have to EQ it a bit. These are the best LCD straight out of the box, but tightening up the upper mid range really helps these headphones. So I don't quite agree with you on them not being good "audiophile" headphones.

    • @WayneAlexander
      @WayneAlexander 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just bought them too....sounded great even without EQ. If I decide to "tighten" them up, what software for Windows works best?? I hear EQ APO + Peace UI, but I've never used. Do you have any files to import that might be worth testing? Thanks for your time!

    Interesting. ... Joshua is the only UTube reviewer of the LCD-GX who does not think its a hidden audiophile Gem, parading about as a decent "Gamer". If you check out all the other reviews, by the usual "trusted" review crew, .. every single one of them thinks that this Audeze is the best sounding Audeze regarding FR, right out of the box. Joshua is the only "noted" Utube reviewer who does not like its sound, as par, "Audiophile" use.

  • @TJ-qk3yg
    @TJ-qk3yg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So we have a luxury efficient planar, light weight and the most comfortable of the lot. Looks are subjective but I'm a sucker for Red and Black. Mostly usable out of the PS4 remote and a phone. The mic quality is a bit disappointing but its a very simple solution to dealing with dual entry headphones, it gets the job done. On top of this we have a 3 year warranty and a solid travel case from a US based company. Resale value should hold so cost of ownership will be a lot less than the $900 price tag. Should be easy enough to get at least a 10% discount from an authorized Audeze dealer.
    Hearing about compressed dynamics is frustrating. Seems to me DSP's are pretty darn effective in compressing audio if that's your thing. Dynamic compression is pretty counter-intuitive to what one would expect from an audiophile grade headphone. Is this compression across the frequency range or mainly in the high-end to help with fatigue? The FR response for these seems like the flattest of the bunch with a bit of that Audeze house sound (which I admittedly have never heard).
    I got impatient for your review and have these on the way. Maybe Ill order in some HIFIMan Sundas to compare. I'm coming from Oppo-PM3's and expect these to be a major up-grade. I was hoping for a bit more praise but that's the high end market. Be it headphones or luxury vehicles. Luxury does not equate to value, reliability or performance but points more to the overall package with refined and improved user experiences. It took me a good year of driving BMWs for work to fully appreciate the experience that BMW sells because wow do those cars have problems and some very cheap parts for their price tag.
    Overall these are a compelling package for someone that wants a high-end all in one headphone for games, music and movies that wont require an amp everywhere you go. The question still remains though. Just how little value in sound quality am I actually getting and does my unit have quality control issues? I suppose my learned appreciation for BMW's helped sell me on this over priced "gamer" headphone.

      @bstrxn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You'll like them. I have been comparing them to the LCD x for a month and a half now and I pick these up 9/10 times. It is a severe disservice to call these gaming cans. What they are is a very good multimedia headphone. If you want one headphone on your desktop that does it all for long stretches everyday, this is it.
      I disagree with josh on soundstage and imaging compared to the x. Visually speaking the X is the equivalent of a really good professional HDR monitor while the gx is like a consumer grade HDR tv. X has more degrees / pixels for imaging. The sound and its profile is very well defined. Think of a solid white dot on a black screen. Now a bigger one on tv but while equally bright and defined has a halo around it(think local dimming), giving it a slightly fuzzy glare like quality. what is a defined point on the X is a slightly fuzzy dot on the gx. But it still moves around the same way and is clear enough that it gets the job done. I have been gaming even more than usual thanks to corona and I have no complains. The stage however is definitely wider but a lot more taller than the X with less vertical imagining precision. I confirmed the width with my gf who gives zero shits about headphones. The X has a more cuppy feel and sound to it and even isolates more sound. GX isn't wide by definition but also not as bad as josh describes it. The GX lacks this finite wall while still being narrow that it does reverb and room echos better than the X, leading to better immersion. Keep in mind I am comparing 2019-20 models. Josh reviewed older models of X both times.
      The difference between the two is like sitting 2 feet from a monitor vs sitting 2 feet from a tv. GX being the tv, same resolution, slightly less dynamic range. The X has a narrow, perfectly curved semi circle in front of your face while the GX has more forward, flatter stage that is slightly wider, if you can imagine the arch of a bow in your head and out your ears. What isn't talked about in the vid is the speed and tonality. So often overlooked are transients and natural/lifelike tonality. The X does that transients better. More magnets and fazor will do that. It is just a tighter sound overall. The gx trades that for a less specific sound and build. But it is tuned perfectly. The X does not sound good without EQ (takes it like a champ btw)and it isn't even a personal thing. The midrange is just bad and has a peak around 1khz and a biiiiig dip somewhere around 4-5khz. Vocals sound nasally and plasticity. The only times I want the X is when i am listening to techno and other electronics without vocals. Even then, synth sounds I have heard for years sound wrong because they have always sounded the same but with varying resolution in different gear. I believe having a lifelike tonality should be first thing to develop after making sure something makes sound. My only gripe about the frequency response would be the treble being dark but that only results in longer listening for me so I can't even complain since it isn't really lacking anything there. I have come to embrace that and the slight compression because it just begs to be on for long and louder. I have stayed up many nights, going on insanely long music binges since getting them. I have yet to get tired of this headphone like I do with others and even the X which I used exclusively before I decided to get these. The GX isn't a master at any one thing. Even gaming like shown in the vid, but it does everything else so good that it is the one i reach for the most. I also expect QC flaws in boutique products because you are trading reliability for overall quality and exclusivity. What should be a worry is if the customer service compensates for that boutique manufacturing. It hurts to see this gem from audeze being called a gamer headphone when it is so much more than that.

    Gaming does not need to be competitive only. Just like there are different types of headphones from different music genres, you need different types of headphones for different types of games, if you like to play competitive in small maps vs large open world just chilling in Destiny 2 for example, with a really good headphones like the Focal Clear MG Pro is made for Destiny 2.

    You are only taking into account competitive gaming. There are also single player gaming, on those games you usually just want to get in the world, but if you can hear every single noise it ruins the atmosphere.
    I have a Focal clear that I love listening music with it, but in games it ruins the atmosphere. I use my he4xx for that. And the same applies for movies, with the focal the speech is higher and in your face, ambience noise the same.

    I miss my HD700 for gaming! It was awesome, but I concur the HD800 is better, so my 700 was redundant. On the GX front I find it to be a very relaxing listen... very smooth. Gaming wise I love it with all sources... be it my Phonitor XE, Schiit Hel(favorite pairing... might be due to aesthetics lol), to direct to my Xbox controller or Switch. PC37x was my go to for a long time! But love the comfort of the GX over the PC37X... though I will probably pick up another one eventually lol. I personally think the GX is great for relaxed listening music sessions with some good whiskey... anyhow, cheers!

    • @Avean
      @Avean ปีที่แล้ว +2

      3 year comment but hopefully you will see this :) Very interested to know why you miss the HD700? Ive just sold my HD700 and thinking about buying these. Arent they worlds apart? This is double the price and i would think they are way more bassy and "fun" sounding than the HD700? HD700 was very flat to me unless i EQ'ed them. But they were really comfy.

    • @TylersEclectic
      @TylersEclectic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Avean to me the GX is the better all arounder for sure! I actually have the HD700 back in the stable and is my primary gaming headphone, but that is due to comfort and the fact it does everything I want it to for gaming. That being said… if I want more immersion or story driven gaming… I prefer my Verites or Atrium Closed(mostly the Atrium Closed… that bass is hard to beat).
      The GX is stupid good and if I got along with planars more I’d probably still have it.

    • @Avean
      @Avean ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TylersEclectic Yeah the comfort is on another level with the HD700's. Interested to know, sound wise, how do the GX stack up against HD700's? And also comfort? I might just buy HD700 again.... haha. Ive used them for 5+ years without issues.

    • @TylersEclectic
      @TylersEclectic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Avean sound wise… I think the GX beats the HD700… but the GX loses to the HD700 in detail, imaging and stage (all great for shooter games and most other games) but, detail and imaging are close. Comfort the HD700 is way more comfy… not as heavy for long gaming sessions…
      The GX for just music also wins out generally.
      Honestly I think the HD700 gets a bad wrap in the community due to some overzealous popular community people having disliked it. I do have the felt mods and some after market pads on my HD700 as a heads up.
      Money where my mouth is I did buy the HD700 again and sold the GX. But, that’s my preference/opinion and not necessarily what’s right for everyone:)
      Side note the GX looks aesthetically very pleasing ha! But is a large heavy over ear headphone due to the nature of planar magnetic drivers

    Great review. But I didn't get a point, you said Arya does soundstage very well, and imaging too, but you also say it does Sucks for gaming. What does it mean, probably you mean for 'competitive' gaming in small-staged fps, while for immersion in single player, or big fps like Battlefield is good? Also, how is the dynamic range of Arya? I was very interested in Arya as i Loved He1000V2 defenately more than SE, i guess Arya makes for me? I'm a passionate single player gamer..

    @1:00 I honestly though for a sec there he was going to say: "But before we talk this specific headphone, I wanna talk today's sponsor, RAID: Shadow Legends!"
    I'm not sure why, but I guess this being a gaming related item instantly triggered my PTSD from watching endless youtube gaming content over the years when he said that...

    The great irony is that actual pros at tournaments have to wear IEMS or earbuds and wear a big old ANC headset over them to prevent them hearing the crowds/ the other team. So this is really just a 900 dollar flex.

      Well yes and no, while I'm in no form or shape justifying buying a 900$ headphone, but pro gamers while when streaming or staying at home and playing do use audiophile grade headphones. Of course taking these out of your house would be really stupid.

      I recently had both this headphone and the Hifiman Ananda. After playing with them for a couple of weeks I returned the LCD Gx’s and kept the Anandas. The GX’s didn’t image accurately enough to warrant keeping it, to the point of being detrimental. In call of duty warzone, environmental sounds duh as glass breaking or footsteps would sound like they were coming from a different place than they actually were in game. It almost sounded like a bad eq in terms of how it threw off the accuracy of the sound. The slight rumble in gunshots and the slam of explosions was nice but it wasn’t what I was looking for at that price.
      The anandas while missing some of the bass slam, made up for it in every other way as well as being $200 cheaper. The imaging is much better in warzone, being able to hear squads ripping their parachutes above you and easily picking out treasure crates and footsteps behind walls. Listening to music from a variety of artists including Avicii, Anderson Paak, NAV, and others has been a real treat as well. It just sounds large, grand, and emotional compared to almost a hollowness of the gx.
      If you’re dead set on trying it, try to go through a retailer like Amazon with a no fuss return policy to see if the GX is right for you. Otherwise, I’m sure there are many other options at similar and even lower prices that you could slap a Modmic on and will get the job done better in terms of competitive gaming and music

      I have this, and the mic does sound leaps and bounds better with the wind screen on. Having said that, I also have reaper plugins and peace running on Equalizer APO to make it sound better. But you can definitely make it sound pretty damn good. Granted, not better than a dedicated mic... but it's not supposed to be that.

    Which headphone would you recommend for mostly exclusive fps (CS:GO, VALORANT) gaming use?
    In this video you mentioned the Sennheiser HD800S, the Beyerdynamic DT1990 (Pro?) and DT880 (Pro?) and the Sennheiser PC37X for options beside the Audeze GX. Maybe even the Audeze Mobious?
    Does a higher price on those mean a better quality on those headphones or how should I choose? I understand the HD800S is the 'best' but $1.600 plus w/e amps and dacs are needed plus a mike and arm plus maybe a non onboard soundcard (do i need that with a dac?) might be a little much for me.

    I don’t know if anyone will see this but I play mostly single player games and plan on getting these (LCD-GX) or the LCD-2 (either open or closed). If I were to pair any of these with Dolby Atmos, and drive them with a Schiit jotunheim, which one would be recommended? Also I am fine with buying a separate mic so the one included with the GX is unnecessary for me.
    Edit: I also listen to a lot of rap sometimes while gaming
    Also I’m not necessarily worried about hearing footsteps and such, just getting the best audio quality I can while gaming and listening to music (again specifically rap most of the time)
