"Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and composed by Prince in 1984, originally intended for his side project, The Family. However, it gained massive popularity when Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor released her version in 1990. O'Connor's rendition was a major hit, topping charts around the world and becoming one of her most iconic tracks. The song is known for its poignant lyrics about heartbreak and longing, paired with O'Connor's powerful and emotive vocal delivery. The music video, featuring a close-up of O'Connor’s face as she sings, further emphasized the song's raw emotional depth. Sinéad O'Connor's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" received widespread acclaim and remains a significant part of her musical legacy

She volunteered at a VA hospital where I live and my friend was friends with her during that time. Had her phone number and everything. Misogynistic Prince summoned her to his home and punched her in the face because she was using profanities in interviews about the song. Profanities were a part of her way of expressing herself and usual in her sad, turbulent upbringing. He thought he could tell her how to live her life, he was wrong.

Such a beautiful song! Near the end of the vid Sinead is really shedding tears because the song had her thinking of her mom, who passed away in 1985.
I saw her on SNL back in 1992 where she tore up a pic of the Pope. She was no longer loved for this song but became hated instead. Nowadays people say she was ahead of her time on that one.

Sinead was a huge talent, her entire "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" album is a big part of my memories. So many great songs on that album I listened to the entire CD with my girlfriend countless times. Her career was largely cut short for the hate she got for standing up against child abuse in the Catholic church and that's a sad statement about our culture.

I loved this song when it first came out, but the video also helped catapult it to fame. In fact, this is one of my all time favorite music videos due to the creative artistry evident. The juxtaposition of her white face against pure black is simplistic and genius. The expressiveness of her eyes which serve to amplify her voice contributes hugely to its impact. The few bleak views of stark trees, and decaying statuary convey images of haunting loneliness. It was just a superb production and holds up beautifully over time.

Over the years, she had a couple dozen singles that did well. She had two platinum and four gold albums, recording well into the 2000s, so she had a solid career. As for the song, it kind of reminds me of that Purple Rain dirge pace, slow and contemplative. To me, it really doesn't sound much like a Prince song, so I'm guessing that's why he gave it to The Family who released it on their debut album (a version no one's heard; give it a listen, interesting take). O'Conner covered it because she connected to the song's feeling of loss. I bought her first CD. It was pretty good, but I didn't pursue listening to her after that, not really to my taste.

Sinead had one massive hit, but several other Top 20 hits around the world. But her musical strength lies in several quality albums that are captivating from start to finish. I listened to her album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got on repeat when I was young and it reached no.1 in a number of countries. I liked her other albums as well, she had other solid singles as well. But she was an odd personality, too unstable to be a solid pop star for decades. She was still looking for herself, experimenting, not aspiring to be a commercial star. But she had indisputable musical talent and quality singing.

I’ve followed Prince’s music and career since the early 80s, and I have never quite bought onto the housekeeper story.
Prince tended to be very honest in his lyric writing, most often writing about a romantic love interest, girlfriend or wife. And often writing from his personal experiences. IMHO I think he most likely wrote this song about his break up with Denise Matthews (a.k.a. Vanity) who was his girlfriend for four years until they parted shortly before shooting began on Purple Rain. (Vanity was originally supposed to have played Prince’s love interest in that film until she left over a money dispute,) Their separation would’ have occurred within months, if not weeks or even days of him writing “Nothing Compares 2 U.”.
The lyrics taken in their entirety make so much more sense if written about Vanity as opposed to some housekeeper.

A note to those who are new to Prince: his original version of this song (on TH-cam) is an UNFINISHED *DEMO* that was released by his Estate after he passed in 2016. It is not fully produced and his vocals are sub par (for him). He likely never intended for his raw demo to be released for public consumption.
I don’t believe Prince ever Intended to give his demo vocals the full treatment; he had planned for the song to be included on an album he was writing and putting together right around the Time of Purple Rain (1984) for his side project, The Family. His vocals on the demo are delivered only at a level sufficient to serve as a general guide for Paul Peterson, lead singer of The Family, to copy. This was Prince’s usual process with all of his many side projects (protégés).
If you want to hear what Prince’s finalized and fully produced version of this song sounds like, make sure to listen to The Family’s released version from 1985.
Rest in peace to Prince, Sinead, and Clare Fisher

She was intense and brilliant. "Nothing Compares to You" is a lovely song, to be sure. But doesn't scratch the surface of her character and uncompromising need to face the truth. She marched to her own drummer, which was why she could never be Top 40, and put into a pretty box. Take a look at this more recent song (from 2013 or thereabouts) called "Reason with Me". Just her and a guitar with a mic in a stripped back room. And she is powerful and vulnerable, and shows her unique understanding of struggles in life. Takes my breath away every time. th-cam.com/video/9kMO97yA1xU/w-d-xo.html

Sinead’s version is beautiful, but you must see Prince do this as a duet with Rosie Gaines, my absolute favorite version.
    RIP Prince and Sinead.

Y’all should react to “Stay” by Shakespears Sister. Another beautiful song that was out around the same time but has a bit of a twist.

Listen to her record that features "No one compares 2 U", it's got more than a few bangers on it.

She did have other hits - mostly in Europe. "I Want Your Hands on Me" and "Mandinka" from the album The Lion and The Cobra. It's a great song but it NEEDS a vocal like this one - she bled on that record. Not one moment of that song is trite or false and it's because she's so in the moment, feeling everything she's singing. You can see it in her face. Powerful stuff. I believe she also stood up for some black artists (rappers) at the time.. and MC Lyte (a trail blazing female rap artist) guested on "I Want Your Hands on Me" - a single I still have in my collection.
