Rere, this was written by and originally performed by Prince. However, his performance paled in comparison and she made the song her own. There is an outstanding live performance on TH-cam that is unbelievable.

Actually, Nothing Compares to You was recorded and performed by Prince's side project group, The Family. He began performing the song in concert, but he never released it on record. It wasn't till after his death, his demo of the song was found and released from the Vault series.

@tmcmurdo826 She performed Princes song with emotional depth, no doubt. Better than Prince ummm we will agree 2 disagree. Prince and Rosie Gaines gave this song life , soul . I do see the pain in her face and her voice is beautiful. BLESSINGS #peaceandstaywild

Hey Rhea/Ree(?🤷): So, this is, actually, a song written by Prince. [Prince, personally, hadn't released any version of it, yet, when Sinead recorded this and released it.
    {{Oh!, and: her name is pronounced: "Shin-aid" (Recall, please, that: I am An American and from N.Y.C., so I am not "hearing in my head" the sounds of letters or syllables, perhaps, as YOU might hear/be used-to hearing them, (I am not entirely certain.🤷🤷) ...but I try to use "phoneme constructs" which will lead you, at least, closer to the way I have always spoken it and heard others pronouncing it, as well! 👍) }}
It was written for one of his (many) bands: The Family and was recorded and appeared on their debut (and sole) album [released:1985].
Prince, later, recorded a live version (which I believe he released in 1993 (on a hits compilation album); which featured Rosie Gaines on the lead vocal.)
His demo. version was, finally, released in 2018 (posthumously).]
...Sadly, Prince and Sinead never, actually, got along (and best I can tell, this was in large part due to various behavioral changes he made/practices or manners of behavior he had, as he fell deeper into the trap of "jehova's witnesses" (a religious movement. --- into which Prince was drawn and converted by his close friend (the OTHERWISE genius --- musically, anyway!) : Larry Graham (legendary bassist and writer, best known for his time in:
Sly & The Family Stone and for (practically) "inventing" (and, if not that: then popularizing the technique to multitudes of generations of players!) of "slap bass.").).
Whatever the case: Sinead had bad experiences with him and never wanted to associate with him, later.
...However: HER version of his song is, without question: THE definitive version.
Her version was released on her sophomore album:
I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got [released in: 1990].
That album and this single broke her, worldwide.
...Personally, I, always, preferred her debut album (from 1987):
    The Lion And The Cobra
[featuring: Marco Pirroni of: Adam And The Ants (Guitarist) as well as Kevin Mooney [some time bassist in Adam And The Ants, as well] and former: Japan [Yes, "Japan" were a band] guitarist, Rob Dean (among others)].
The Lion And The Cobra is a powerfully striking debut.
My first recommendations (if you are going to peruse songs and not the entire album (as SHOULD be done!), would be:
    "Troy"
    as well as:
    "Drink Before The War"
    and
"I Want Your (Hands On Me)"
[Women did NOT speak this way, publicly, in 1987! This was (and remains!) a RUSH!]
...but the entire album is great! (and that is NOT to somehow, indirectly, seem to denigrate any of her later work, AT ALL!) She continued making GREAT music, for decades! ...and was taken from this world much too soon [Sinead passed-on in July of 2023😭😭😭😭😭]
Sinead struggled with (long undiagnosed, misunderstood and not officially demarcated) mental health issues and had suffered terrible and debilitating abuse at the hands of her mother (and others) as a youth, as well.
She became a voice for many who felt they "had none" and sought to speak for them (as she was able). She, also, created controversy (sometimes intentionally, often NOT!) by saying many things, through the years....particularly for standing-up against sexual abuse practiced in and tolerated (for massive amounts of time!) by: the catholic church [WELL before this was publicly spoken-of or recognized!!!!]
...SO: Sinead is not, just, musically important, she is a completely unique and powerful (and imperfect) human being.
Exploring her will be to your benefit.
I can, easily and assuredly, make that statement; unequivocally.

  • @marcus3261

Sinead cried in the video because the lyrics reminded her of her mother who while driving on an icy stretch of road lost control of her car and crashed in to the side of a bus and died in 1985. 5 years later Sinead released this song, Nothing Compares to you in 1990.

The reference to her mother was left as a tribute to her mum, who died a few years earlier. Sinead and her mother often clashed heads, but she loved her mum all the same. By the way, it's pronounced "Shinead". It's a Celtic name. With Sinead being Irish, a Celtic name makes sense. 👌 😊

Her abusing mum passed away shortly before she took this prince song and made it a classic. When she sang the song, she thought about her mother. U actually see her tears on the song, it was the first take and she nailed it.
She also spoke out against child abuse in the church, she ripped the popes picture her mum had hanging in their living room live on SNL show which made the industry trying to boycot her. She refused to sell her body as sx symbol also which her label tried to do and she decided to shave her hair. She had way more talent than a Madonna or Cher but they choose to sell their souls, this lady not.
Even Prince tried to physically abuse her at his home and she ran away in the middle of the night and was found by police walking next to the highway. Prince family refused to let her use this song in her documentary also, because she revealed his true face.
Her son died just 1 or 2 years before she passed away which hurt her deep. She loved her children. She found peace in Islam last years of her life and kept performing occasionally.
    Rip Sinead

The song was written by Prince who of course is male. The line “All the flowers you planted mama” referred to his female partner. Sinead didn’t change the original lyrics likely out of respect for the artist who wrote the song. However, Prince was not happy with Sinead’s version of the song and for the most part did not like anyone covering his music. He felt artists should make their own music and not build on what someone else did.

Mama in this instance is not referencing a mother. The word mama can be used as a term of endearment towards your lover, like Baby....your female lover or just a woman you are sexually harassing on the street, e.g., "hey, what's up mama?" Anywho, this song was written by Prince and that's how he was using it and O'Connor simply chose to cover the song as written. She OWNED it.

A lot of people prefer this version cause it was the first they heard it probably and a huge hit. Plus she changed the meaning.
    But NOTHING compares to Prince.
Both his demo for The Family and his live version with the great Rosie Gaines, smashes this to bits in my humble opinion.
Vocally and musically there’s literally NO COMPARISON.
Saw him do it live in person several times as well and it was like a religious experience.
