Roger Moore referring to JCVD as Jean Claude Venereal Disease is one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard 😂😂
It's too bad Moore's character was undersold in the marketing, since he's clearly the most interesting character. Tons of potential with a British military veteran turned pirate.
I use to think Van Dam was a rather bad actor. Then I saw “JCVD” and he was able to act using his native language. Wow. Such a difference.
Yeah it's a shame more people havent seen JCVD. It's a great film. And that scene is phenomenal.
Jean Claude Van Jhonson is well worth watching on Amazon Prime too.
Well the thing is, he wasn't acting, he was spilling his guts.
But yeah, apparently I had something in my eye during that scene cause I couldn't help but shred a tear... :/

Also his performance throughout the film is great.

Also this movie might not be perfect but it was pretty cool to see different fighting styles from all over the world be featured, including Capoeria. Don't get enough movies with that. Maybe Oliver could tackle the movie Only the Strong, which is the only Capoeria centric movie out there.
Supposedly, Dacascos learned the entire style in about five months, specifically for the film

@@BobfishAlmighty Well, helps Dacascos was already a seasoned Martial Artist so picking it up was probably easy for him.
With all due respect, I doubt he trained for 5 months. His ginga, the base of capoeira, is completely wrong.

I loved this movie, watched it multiple times as a kid and even now. The music was great too.
I remember watching this in the cinema. I was more excited to see Roger Moore on screen than Jean Claude Van Dam.

This may not be a great movie, but I got to see it just for the performance of Sir Roger Moore. That guy was a treasure.

JCVD Is a underrated actor I know his movies are considered like B movies but I love just about all the movies he was in from the 80s & 90s!

@Lame Duck Van Damme wasn't in 'Simon Sez' that was a truly bad film staring Dennis Rodman. I think you might be thinking of 'Double Team' where Van Damme and Rodman both starred together?
Double impact, and it's quite watchable
Remember watching this as a kid. A couple of months back I gave it a rewatch. One of my favorite Dams movies simply because of an adventure...

The spanish figther is Peter Malota, a great friend to JCVD and made some movies with him like "Double Impact", "The Order" and "Universal Soldier".
Loved this film as a kid. It's one of his weaker pieces, but I appreciate the film for what it is. 90s nostolgia.
My best friend and I skipped school to go see this movie.... and silently agreed to walk out about 45 minutes after it started

Just came across a documentary on Amazon prime called "In search of the last action heroes" directed by some guy named Oliver Harper. Great stuff man!
I think I walked passed this VHS cover a thousand times in blockbuster before finally catching the trailer on another tape. I had zero interest until I heard Sir Roger say “my name is Dobbs... Lord Dobbs”. That man could sell water to the ocean.
So they should have put his name above the title after all.
Looks like the opening is filmed in the Phi Phi islands in Thailand. Went there 14 yeats ago. Heaven on earth that place
JCVD consider this and Universal Soldier the best movies in his career.

I was a big fan of JCVD but Sir Moore was the only reason I watched this movie RIP I still watch 'The Saint' to this day

I love some of the score pieces from this movie. Track titled "Sentenced to Death" is one of the most beautiful score pieces ever.

When I watched this film I remember thinking , halfway into the tournament, that you could call the winner of any fight that Van Damm wasn't in, by picking whichever fighter is from the country farthest to the east. I think that that actually holds pretty true( from what I remember. Haven't watched it in decades).
Come 1996 Van Damme was no longer on my radar and I had no idea of this film's existence until the 2000s.
How have u not done double impact yet? Come on Oliver it's his best.
"What the hell is a Dim Mak?" The Quest is worth watching for Roger Moore, the skilled fighters and the production value, but stick with Bloodsport for the original and best JCVD tournament movie.
That's when he breaks the bottom brick in Bloodsport.
Which I'll take Bloodsport all day over the Quest.

well it wasn't a hit film or anything. Universal Solder might have got some kind of treatment. I don't remember. But the Quest wasn't a popular film and at the tail end of JCVD's time headlining movies that don't go straight to video.

I loved this film as a kid... especially with the showcase of styles and the cinematography.

Yeah, the smoker thing caught my eye too.
I love the fighting scenes. IMO the best filmed 'in camera' fighting I've seen being captured on 35mm film (even compared to Ong Bak 2 and the better Donnie Yen fights). Gorgeous lighting and so many fighting styles. Too bad they didn't extend the fighting bits. It was fantastic. The film is thin on story and not consistent but gorgeously filmed and many good acting performances.

The Quest is a good sunday movie. It's like that typical matinées movies of the 90's like Cuttroat Island. It's entertaining and has a budget that hightlights beutiful locations. The Quest was always a keeper in my book, too bad like you said that the fight scenes needed to be longer.

I would like to see a Retrospective/Review of "The Wild Geese". It was a Roger Moore action movie outside made in the middle of his Bond career. I know that is a late 1970's action movie, but the cast and action in that movie is worth a in depth look at.

I saw this film on VHS a year after it's release, and never knew the late Roger Moore, James Bond 007, was in this movie until my dad told me about it
I remember being sick at home and my dad rented The Quest for me. Probably watched it 3 or 4 times in a row out of boredom and because I kept falling asleep.

Old Roger looks better in this than he did in 'A View to a Kill', he should've been gearing up for 'Tomorrow Never Dies' instead of making this shite :D
The unrelated text in the last paragraph in the book - this must have been standard practice back in the day. I especially noticed it in Tango & Cash. I think it was barely noticeable on DVD, but on blu-ray every newspaper they show are just headlines and unrelated stock text repeated over and over. Check it out, it's literally every time they smash-cut to a newspaper to move the plot along. It's wild.

What bums me out is that jcbd didn't use any muay thai fighting technique, considering he was trained on the island.
Randy the composure sounds like he worked on the movie Dragon the Bruce lee story. Almost identical I love JCVD he is one of the reasons why I became an actor. I saw this movie with my brother in the cinema it was different because of the time piece but I really like it. Peter Matola was actually my Sensi’s teacher For 20 years in Michigan. It’s pretty cool to get the teachings passed on. He’s actually Albanian he’s representing the flag on his belt buckle in the movie.

Glad you reviewed this film. I was 9 when I first saw this film and it's a favorite of mine. A 90s Bloodsport that's overlooked. You have to review No Retreat No Surrender, Death Warrant, Double Impact and Double Team too :).

i fell totally in love with the big Mongolian, I didn't remember anything else. I didn't even remember the storyline or Roger Moore and James Remar being in the film., haha.
i did remember completely enjoying the difference fighting styles going against each other. so i really enjoyed the tournament part of this movie..

Its just a meh film. You have better versions like Enter the Dragon & Mortal Kombat.
Enter the dragon was far better than mortal combat.

Mortal Kobat isn't even close to the quality of Enter the Dragon! Take the nostalgia & love for video game out and Mortal Kombat doesn't have much to stand on as a film.
And as far as better versions, the obvious comparison is Bloodsport! Which is like the Godfather compared to MK lol.

I'm a big of of Van Damme's 80's and 90's movies, i can happily rewatch movies like Hard Target and Double Impact again and again. The Quest is pretty good, i enjoyed it. Not one his best for sure but i've seen much worse movies and some of those were one's which so called critics praised.

Excellent retrospective Sir, I’m hoping one day you’ll do Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Legionnaire (1998). Along with Universal Soldier (1992), I think that has to be my favorite Van Damme film.

I find action heroes don't really need to be good actors but rather action heroes who make good movies. Van Damme had some great movies for us kids growing up in the 90s. TimeCop, Universial Soldier, Double Impact, Hard Target and Sudden Death were all good films from my perspective at such a young age. Thus Van Damme will always be an iconic action hero for me.
This falls into the Van Damme 3 forgotton films era for me. Those 3 films are The Quest, The Order and Knock Off. I say that cos they are 3 films of his i never saw any advertisements for they just popped up as premiers on the Sky Movie channels in the 90s. I had no idea he'd even made them till then, lol. The Quest was always the one that stood out for me though. I remember quite enjoying it but don't think I've been back to watch it again since.
as a kid i alway´s thought that being adult is all about getting a job, driving car, fighting in nearly every situation...

Sweet, I reviewed this gem a while ago. I love the adventure and martial arts aspect of it.
This was one of my favorite Van Damme movies. Mostly because of the variety of martial arts styles in the tournament.
Never heard of this movie until now. Seeing Roger Moore in it made me interested.

It was a classic for the 90s. I still loved this movie.
My mother worked for a big insurance company back when this was made. I still remember her telling me when I got back from watching the movie that they only payed for their insurance after the movie was made, to cover their ass in the paperwork. Talk about half-ass run.
The film is very silly but i quite enjoyed it. Lots of nice visuals of Thailand.

I totally agree with Oliver's review, the late great Roger Moore is the highlight of this mediocre Van Damme flick.
Awesome, loved this movie, though I felt like it was just a big budget retelling of Blood Sport. Okay now time to watch.
