@AvE Great review. Especially from a Makita fan boy as I have been for years as well. I only wish you didn't mention a price for the switch. Maybe, just maybe, Dewalt only charges $24.95 for a replacement switch but now if one of their business type dudes watched your video, they are now going to charge $40.00. Outside of my totally misplaced issue with switch pricing, you are without question, the man. You sir, have experience, knowledge & smarts far beyond the average uploader on TH-cam, but I'm sure you must know this already. As an aside, aren't most if not all mass produced power tool gears, pressed powder metal nowadays?
Nothing beats a solid, skookum, intelligent Kanuckistan who knows what he is about. Cheers mate & thanks for all your in-depth reviews & entertaining videos. You are the sort of fellow that most of us wish we had as a neighbour & friend & would gladly raise a pint with, if you indulge in that sort of carnal activity.
Recent subscriber, fellow Canadian & looking forward to whatever you have up your sleeve for your next video. I laugh my ass off at your deeply twisted, darkly tinted, extremely juvenile & very witty sense of humour.

Don't worry the switch will out last the gears. I worked maintenance in a meat packing plant about 10 yrs. ago and the Dewalt grinders wouldn't last a year and it was always the gears that went bad. Maybe a little lube would help. They will also shock the crap out of ya when sanitation hoses you down while your trying to work.

At the shipyard I work at, we have a lot of the 4" grinders.
The gear set housing tends to snap right at the flange leaving you just the pinion gear sticking out.
So I think you're right on the money that the gear set on this bad boy would go first.

been using my dewalt 4.5 inch alot of times with over sized 7in disk cutting disk as well as the 7in cutting/grinding disk if I had alot to cut and gring (reckless yea I know) for over 7 years now. I use mine for mostly automotive repair and fab work. till this day it still works like it did day 1 (doesn't look like day one any more). very reliable, it was the first grinder I purchased and never had a reason to get another. I've used it to cut upwards of 3/4in steel plates hardened steel, plastic, stuck a circular saw blade in it and cut wood. it just never seems to quit no matter what I put it through.

Follow up to my op. The Husqvarna comparison was between competing brands of chainsaws. Another fun and useful item to have in the kitchen.

I switched from Makita to DeWalt when every cordless I had dropped broke the handle off. I have brutalized my DeWalt and so far only dusted the clutch in a D-handle SDS rotary hammer.(actually my neighbor borrowed it and was drilling spike holes in railroad ties with it when it lost fwd.) Awesome review and now I am late for work!

I got dewalt with same powder gearbox, and in past 2 years no issues. The cable broke first, close to the cable shoes inside which was really strange, as this is no movement zone. The tool is strongly abused with way bigger discs than supposed to use with it.
I do really enjoy your tool reviews, you have to do it more often :)

Gotta say I totally enjoy your site. You are detailed but make it interesting and down to earth as well. As for the Dewalt gearset my suggestion is buy new, open her up and put some good grease in there. I bet if you had done that it would have been quieter and ran cooler and of course last longer.

MoS2 in non-oxidizing environments is stable up to 1100˚C, but in air, it starts to turn into MoO3 around 350˚C, whilst evolving sulfur dioxide.
Fortunately, the grease its suspended in will also keep the oxygen away, so it will be serviceable in a proper formulation to much higher than 350˚C.
Perhaps a dollop of the grease on your (rather nifty) temperature controlled soldering iron can give an indication of what the mixture's breakdown temperature might be?
Thanks for the shout-out, kind sir.

Wiki had the one reference to 350˚, but it was so vague in its application that I had to go looking for a better reference, once it was called into question. This wasn't easy, because all the molygrease makers list temps higher than 350˚. Eventually, I found this
      www.engineersedge.com/lubrication/molybdenum_disulfide_characteristics.htm
which seems pretty thorough. I might have to keep that site in mind for future reference. it reads like a 70s textbook, just how I like my reference material.

Would love to see some stuff on the new DeWalt 60v and 120v chop saw, circular saw, and saws-all.
