    Note, the lack of hall effect sensors doesn't mean it's open loop control, the ESC reads the voltage coming back from the coils (once the MOSFETs are off) to determine the actual position / speed of the motor. If this wasn't the case, then when the motor started to get under load it would lose sync completely. Model aeroplane 3 phase motors are the same (no hall effect sensors) and they work fine in sensing the load, and adjusting the frequency accordingly.

    • @davidpearce1995
      @davidpearce1995 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's a terrible solution for motors that start under load. You can actually initially rotate in the wrong direction, and applying full power is generally not a good idea. It's cheap though!
      However, that rotor looked weird to me. Was this brushless PM or induction? I guess each slice could have been a polarized magnet.... In induction, you need a current path (the cage).
      Or maybe VSR...

    • @johngaltline9933

      @@davidpearce1995 Nothing wrong with using back EMF for sensing. It's not as good as using hall effect sensors, but it's cheap and easy with modern uP's. It will get the business done plenty good enough for a hand drill.

    • @brainndamage
      @brainndamage 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      It's not applying full torque from 0 in an instant. It ramps up the speed open-loop until it can sense enoucg back-EMF to switch into closed loop.

      the one I bought uses sealed bearings on the rotor. The ones in this video are shielded.
      So yeah, there's likely a real hodge podge of parts being used to turn out all the counterfeit impact wrenches. Everything appears to be a cheap clone of the real deal, from the switch (Omron in the Makita) the connectors, the LED light, the ESC and the battery rail.
      The gear housing and transmission are as close to OEM as it gets. And I wouldn't be surprised if those are being stolen right off of a Makita assembly line.

Electricals are tidy with clean solder, metal gear train, smooth trigger with a boot, boards conformally coated, bigass motor, and it went together as easy as it came apart. Looks like it shares its guts with higher end Ryobis

      And they're certainly not built as good either. I've taken one of these Chinese wrenches apart along with the Makita it's a direct rip of (XWT11.) There is no comparing the two in terms of overall quality, the OEM blows the fake out of the water.
      The only thing that comes close to OEM is the gear housing and the transmission, and that's because there's a 99% chance they're stealing them right out of a Makita-owned assembly line.

    The motor is most likely running in closed loop. A lot of the brushless DC speed controllers look at the back EMF to determine position. I'm guessing it's by looking at the signal from whichever coil is inactive, but I haven't looked into how they set up the logic for those things. This is why hobby RC motors sometimes twitch when you first turn them on, it lets the brain box know the position of the motor
