Watching these videos puts me in touch with my blacksmith ancestors and brings me back to my days in a metal fabrication shop in the late 1980s. I made a very crude hand and a half sword there but no longer have it.
TH-cam recommended this video to me, and I’m certain it’s for two reasons: reason one, I watch a ton of knife making videos; reason two, it’s a black and pink knife, and I watch a ton of Blackpink videos 😂
I really liked the finished profile of this. I watch a lot of blade forging videos and never saw one with copper layered into one. Really nice work and beautiful finished piece!
That looks great! Very nice work. The copper pattern is really sweet. It's reminiscent of a signature to me. It's random and yet seems intentional, like a signature! I love it. Thanks for sharing.
Just found your videos, and I'm the 7+ years I've been watching knife making videos and Forged In Fire, I've never seen anyone do the end press for can damascus steel, which makes perfect sense to me. Is that something you thought up, I'd bet your knives are better than anything they've had on that show. The last time I did any blacksmithing was over 10 years ago, but I've learned something great from you. Keep up your great work. 👍
Its hard to do. I have a very low success rate because its easy to pinch the can. If i pinch it the billet gets trapped inside and i still have to cut it out. But the white spay paint makes all the difference in removing the billet from the can.
Regarding the popped caps, what I see on other channels is drilling a little hole in one corner of each cap. Then no worry about pressure blowing it out. Nice blade, and I like that you offer commentary unlike most other similar video makers.
First, well done on the TH-cam plaque! And well done on sticking with a project that, at times, must have felt pretty frustrating. But, of course, that's how we learn.
@rvhollaradventures thats one thing i appreciate about the knife making community in general. Most everyone is happy to help other makers and share knowledge. At least everyone ive ran into.
JP, I have made some twisted cable damascus back in the day. One of the things we always struggled with was the heavy amount of grease that is packed inside the wire rope. There is usually some kind of fiberous/cloth material in the interior that is packed with grease as well. I think it is designed to wick up the grease as it heats up. As a consequence we always had trouble with voids. If you have an ultrasonic cleaner, maybe a bath of Simple Green and 30 minutes getting the hell vibrated out of it before you give it the spa treatment in the acetone. Anyways, you may not have trouble with the voids and inclusions, but if you ever do, try looking into that. Also, I wanted to say, the final product looks sweet.
Thank you for the advice. Ive had tons of trouble almost every time ive tried doing cable. Thats why i always end up putting it in a can vs heating and welding the fibers like others do. I think it also has to do with the size of my cable. Its small. Ive seen others using way bigger cable. Regardless im glad it came out cool looking in the end.
Those are actually not cracks those are voids from losing copper, I have felt with that from experience prior to my first successful cu Mai! Cu Mai is delicate dance of heat and forging! Great job turned out good
@@JPsBladeworks my first two attempts failed I lose to much copper was trying to multi task and the billets got to hot! 3 rd and 4th ones were a success
nice work, if you put a small piece of scrap copper on top of you billet while forgin you can tell if the copper inside you billet is molten if the piece on top is melting, and prevent blowing molten copper al over the place
Decoration and light use only. Copper will NEVER properly fuse to steel to create a reliable, strong weld. Under force/pressure, this blade will separate. Not taking anything away from this guy or his skills. It does look great!!
great work on the knife JP i love the look of cumai as well i just finised a couple twisted damascus hunters and my 1st fillet knife a customer ordered happy new year congrats on 100K sub plaque Mark
Keep up the work man, looks awesome, you should take a couple months and hike through the forest to come up with some ideas, nothing sparks creativity like nature
No because the core steel is whats keeping the main integrity of the knife. The copper also brazes the steels together creating a strong bond. Much stronger than the force you will exert on a cooking knife.
I understand you’re a hobbyist but I would suggest you go with a full tang with your blades. Anyone who loves knives usually prefers a full tang for strength and stability.
It just depends on the amount of steel i have left over. I dont always have enough. I make the steel first then i figure out what i want to make from it.
Depends on the size of the knife. But anywhere from 2hrs up to like 6 sometimes. I take periodic brakes that I don't include in that time. Also it depends the grit I want to get it too.
I have seen some folks drilling in a small hole/vent on the top of their canisters, not sure if that's something you have tried to prevent your canisters from popping.
Its done to release pressure from the gasses created in heating the canister. I dont drill a hole but i leave holes in my welding to relieve that pressure.
For full tang, i slpit them to 3/8 sheets. For hidden tang i prefer to keep thick incase anything is out of square. Its easier to shave material than it is to add back on.
Great execution on this! I think I will try the cable in a can.. but just skip the copper and do San mai. The copper looks sweet but I know I’d screw it up by melting it. 😂👍🏻👍🏻
Great job my brother! Congratulations on 100,000 Subscribers, as well! You have definitely earned all of them! I'm only three knives in, so far, and my TH-cam channel isn't up yet, but it's very close! Thanks for sharing and being so inspiring! #respect ... Bob Gore, Metalstorm Forge! 😎👍🏻🔨🔥🔪

I appreciate the support

I love these patterned knives. They are so unique.

Glad you liked it
as a blacksmith i very much love it. as a chef, the copper in the cutting edge makes me extremely nervous.
Nervous of what?

Hey man! Thanks for actually breaking down what you’re doing. I’m a gun guy. I don’t know anything about knife making but you nailed it!!!!

I love that pattern! That would be a great addition to my collection!!!

Decoration and light use only. Copper will NEVER properly fuse to steel to create a reliable, strong weld. Under force/pressure, this blade will separate. Not taking anything away from this guy or his skills. It does look great!!
The force needed to break apart the bond is much more than you woudl ever produce cutting food.
😂 tool
Stunning work! The copper looks like Arabic writing or some type of city skyline by Van Gogh. ❤
Glad you liked it
That would make a great kitchen knife set
I agree
That looks so damn cool. The copper almost resembles a signature in cursive writing.
I love the look the copper gives. Just like an EKG

Please correct me if I’m wrong here but, would this not be a super weak blade bc of the copper?
No because the core steel is whats keeping the main integrity of the knife. The copper also brazes the steels together creating a strong bond. Much stronger than the force you will exert on a cooking knife.

The wave going thru is actually the steel reheating due to the crystalline structure changing. The term is descalescence.

isnt it soft in the copper section?
Yes but it doesnt affect the knife since the only part of the knife making contact with anything hard would be the hardened blade edge.

Very nice. I just wish other makers would split those wood blocks. You could make 2 knives instead of 1 and a bunch of sawdust.
For full tang, i slpit them to 3/8 sheets. For hidden tang i prefer to keep thick incase anything is out of square. Its easier to shave material than it is to add back on.

You cant learn without screwing up a couple of billets. Ive done so my self on many occasions 😅
You gave that knife a heart beat. Lol
Very nice! How much would you charge to commission a knife like that?
Not sure. Exactly like this around 500 usd. Id have to check if i even have the materials to do the outer cladding.
How much would a knife like this cost?
Looking amazing JP 😅.
Thanks

the left side looks more like it then the right side
Great job

I’m no expert so I could be wrong, but isn’t galvanic corrosion going to be a problem
So you really have to weld all the way outside the billet ?
Yea. It sucks and takes a while but i wouldnt skip that step.
Why is the tang so small. Just my opinion the tang should be the whole length of the handle for proper balancing
It depends on how much steel i have to allocate to the handle. Sometimes my math is off and the tang is a little smaller than i would like
it is cool looks like a heart beet
Never looked at it that way but it does.

Whats Theo name.off Theo Paint?
Its just white spray paint. But it has to be white to work. Works just like liquid paper but is easier to apply
Need to double rinse in acid, at the very least. It was still very oily.
great job. Copper is poisonous, but is it ok to have it in a chefs knife?
Do u sell knifes
I have a webpage but i dont have anything available right now
I'm asking this through pure ignorance, how does the copper go holding an edge? Is it actually practical?
The copper doesnt do any of the cutting so it doesnt need to hold an edge. The core steel is what does all the cutting and it is a high carbon core
You should use a drill to help move the powder more into the canister. But do not drill inside
A drill? Ive seen people use a sawsaw but i havent seen a drill used.
Oh man; I was hoping you’d use the setup in your thumbnail so we could watch as the comments section went apoplectic!
Looks like a doctors prescription or signature 😂
