These intermediate level song lessons are intended for players with more experience. They will often contain a lot of barre chords. Information is provided on screen for both right and left-handed players.
'39 by Queen is the song I've wanted to put up here ever since I started doing these videos. It's epic in every way. Originally played on a 12-string and I've arranged it here with a capo on fret 1 so that it matches the key of the studio recording, but I don't think that's the way Brian May played it. In live performances the song is played without a capo in the key of G, and it's most likely it was also played that way in the studio and then sped up a semi-tone afterwards.
The majority of the song contains (verses and chorus) contains quite simple chords, but the intro and bridge have some crazy stuff going on (Eb#11 anyone?). The intro is the part of the song most people want to learn, and the good news is that it's not really that difficult. If you start by just getting the basic chords down before adding in all the little melodic extras then you'll likely get the hang of it quickly. It's played very smoothly. Brian May plays at least 3 acoustic guitar parts in the intro, so that's why it sounds so full on the record!

Here is the intro written out in guitar tab: www.patreon.com/posts/23069062
TH-cam have removed annotations from videos, so this information is now missing. On the studio recorded version of the song, the B7 chord in the pre-choruses is actually a D#dim7 (low to high: x-x-2-1-2-1). Brian May plays a B7 when he performs this song live, which is what I based the chords I used on.
Strum pattern for the main parts of the song is along the lines of: D-DUDUDU and D-D--UD--D-D--UD.

If you want it to sound like the live version, on “pity ME” strike a g chord. and on the last bar do this:
    1 and 2 and 3 and 4
    G D G
basically, in the beat between 4 and 3 strum a d chord and then a g chord on “four”

In the year of '39 assembled here the volunteers
In the days when lands were few
Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
    The sweetest sight ever seen
    And the night followed day
    And the story tellers say
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas
Ne'er looked back, never feared, never cried
Don't you hear my call though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew
In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue
The volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh
For the earth is old and grey, little darling, we'll away
But my love this cannot be
For so many years have gone though I'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me
Don't you hear my call though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand for the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew
Don't you hear my call though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
All your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand
    For my life
    Still ahead
    Pity me

You're not going to get an amazing piece as much with most modern celebrities. Those primarily rely on a three or four chord structure that is used in most, if not, all pop audio clips these days. Good music is usually nice and complex and therefore turns out the best, such as this song. This isn't to say that the pop celebrities we now have can't make good music, but it's incredibly rare that they do.

Thanks for the lesson, I've always loved this song, didn't realize it was so simple. Now if I could just figure out the actually melody of the chorus - Queen's harmony is so close that it's hard to tell who's singing lead and who's harmonizing. By far the easiest tutorial video for this song because using a capo makes it so the chord fingerings are actually possible for mere mortals to play.

Lyrics if someone needs (me in the case lol):
In the year of '39, assembled here the volunteers
In the days when lands were few
Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
    The sweetest sight ever seen
    And the night followed day
    And the story tellers say
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas
Ne'er looked back, never feared, never cried
Don't you hear my call though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew
In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue
The volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh
For the Earth is old and grey, little darling, we'll away
But my love, this cannot be
Oh, so many years have gone though I'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me
Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
Write your letters in the sand for the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew
Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
All your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand
    For my life
    Still ahead
    Pity me

This is perfect. I wish all guitar tutorials were like this, when its mostly chords, changes and rhythm that needs to be studied. In a guitar tutorial video I want to see the guitar being played to me, straight through the song. No cuts. I want the chords displayed so i can see whats coming and no friggin around. This video has all of that. Great job thanks! 🍻

Awesome ! Just starting to learn this song and found your video. What a clean sound you have on this ! One thing troubled me though : on pre-choruses, the chords sequence is written on the 1st beat of the 3rd bar but it is played on the previous beat. Took me a moment to realise why it sounded weird on my end ;)

Still here, LHG 🙂! Am halfway through the intro, about to get into the hammer-ons ❤️ - my left-hand fingertips are *destroyed* LOL! Thanks for admitting elsewhere that “ ‘39 “ “is a beast” - it certainly is, but what a *glorious* beast 😁❤️🎶! It is becoming my Moby Dick - “I’ll chase [it] to the ends of the Earth, and ‘round Perdition’s Flames, before I give [it] up!” 😎 Got to play what little of it I’ve got so far on a Taylor 362ce 12-string the other day ❤️ - “Miss Taylor” is my motivation. Have to be able to play “ ‘39 “ before I can allow myself to part with that much bread. Thanks again for the instruction and encouragement on this song that has haunted me for most of my life 🙂! - Steve

It seems like you've retired, but if you ever come back to TH-cam, would you like to do a tutorial for Love of my life (live version)? I know Brian plays it on a 12 string, but he uploaded a 6 string version to his TH-cam channel that I can't figure out on my own.

    just two mistakes: 1.on 1:34 С, than G and D.
2.on 1:38 after Em must be D, than C, Em, Am.
    everything else is great

we lefties are but a rare breed. i learned guitar from TH-cam videos and i think it was due to learning from right handed players, it was like looking in a mirror, and felt more natural, and easier than a right handed person learning from another right handed person
