Couldn't agree more. I was the ultimate Queen fan in highschool (78-82). I still have all the original vinyl from Queen I through The Game. His tone comes from the Red Special and his Vox AC30 settup. It was that sound I found so inspiring, as well as his studio orchestrations.

A think that is the model. 88 key, built in 200 rhythms, about $400. Then your little brother or sister can play with you and sing. Lots of free music on the Internet. Chords and lyrics to songs. Or, a friend can come over and play and sing with you. Have some fun.
To think this guy could rock just as well as doing his physics homework is just mind blowing. The fact that his signature guitar was made by himself with some help from his dad is also mind blowing. Idk anyone who come close to him in term of being super smart and super talented

The Red Special is the coolest guitar ever made. I think it's amazing that he managed to make a guitar with his dad that has such a distinctive and amazing sound. He managed to make a guitar that is arguably better than all the super high end Gibsons, Fenders, PRSs, and everything else out of a fucking reclaimed cabinet. He is also an incredibly creative god of guitar, and he has made so much amazing music through his life. Such an inspiration!
It took him two years. I can only imagine how much time he spent thinking of what he wanted out of the guitar. Seems like he knew he wanted every sounds possible (looking at all those switches). And took his time for the design, as it's really really well balanced.
Yup, and if I'm not mistaken, he said in an interview that It's never been re-freted. The red special is very much it's own entity, everything about it is unique.

Hendrix, Slash and Van Halen aside (they get all the plaudits)... Brian May has to be the most original modern guitarist that has ever lived. Apart from being so unique in his style and sound, he 's done it on a guitar he built. No-one else has ever done that. Mind-blowing. Plus, his solos are so goddamn hard to learn even with this video.
Brian May is awesome. Such a brilliant Guitar player/musician. It's interesting that I wouldn't have had ANY idea of what he was talking about in 1983 as I'd of been 13 years old, but now as an adult, I can fully appreciate every detail about the gear, choice of pickups, amps, and even the part where he claimed it uncharacteristic of him to play a scale as opposed to how he plays over chords. I'm in my 40s and have been playing guitar since my early teens and the whole reason I play was because I was inspired by Brian May, probably around the time this was recorded. Terms like legend, master or guitar hero get banded around, but Brian, you are a all of those and more. Even after all these years, I get an uncontrollable urge to go and pick up my guitar when I hear you play.

I can play very similarly to Hendrix, Vaughan and Clapton but NEVER, NEVER like Brian may, he is so original and unorthodox! He’s not a pentatonic guy, he’s so unique, what a special player!! Unmatched!

He is such a good player, everything he plays is really considered but when he plays, it is done with a real sense of feeling and although it has all been thought through, it still sounds spontaneous....it all flows perfectly. That is the sign of a truly great player in my opinion. Any decent guitarist can play fast, but fast with clarity and feeling is not easy. Hats off to a true great.
I don't play guitar. This was so interesting a lecture and I imagine he would be a terrific teacher to other guitarists. Mr. May's illustrating the differences by using his tools so cool.
Brian, hammer on, tapping? Wow, I had no idea. Love how he mentions EVH and how Eddie took it to another direction. Brian was pretty nonchalant about it, almost as if he didn't really want to admit he tapped! Always a pleasure to learn something from Brian May. In my guitar endeavors, I'm just content to make a little noise. All these Masters, whether you admire them or not , Malmsteen, May, Hendrix, Blackmore, Di Meola, Eobert Cray, all inspired me to play.
I miss these this video!I remember hearing him play at a concert in Japan and he sounded really great.His tone is the best I've listen live. I am a Japanese guitarist and artist and I will continue to pursue my picking skills in order to one day be able to play my own unique tone.

The governor...Love Of My Life guitar part sounds like Bach when played unaccompanied. Possibly the most distinctive sounding guitarist ever. You hear a few notes and instantly it's Brian May....even on a pastiche piece like the solo from "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Brilliant man all round. Do good things...

Hendrix, Slash and Van Halen aside (they get all the plaudits)... Brian May has to be the most original modern guitarist that has ever lived. Apart from being so unique in his style and sound, he 's done it on a guitar he built. No-one else has ever done that. Mind-blowing. Plus, his solos are so goddamn hard to learn even with this video.

Brian May is awesome. Such a brilliant Guitar player/musician. It's interesting that I wouldn't have had ANY idea of what he was talking about in 1983 as I'd of been 13 years old, but now as an adult, I can fully appreciate every detail about the gear, choice of pickups, amps, and even the part where he claimed it uncharacteristic of him to play a scale as opposed to how he plays over chords.

Alex Escobedo Instead of creating a song with notes based around a certain scale (A, B, C etc), he would create a melody or song around a chord.
I'm in my 40s and have been playing guitar since my early teens and the whole reason I play was because I was inspired by Brian May, probably around the time this was recorded.
Terms like legend, master or guitar hero get banded around, but Brian, you are a all of those and more.
Even after all these years, I get an uncontrollable urge to go and pick up my guitar when I hear you play.
Such a unique sound, instantly recognisable. Beautiful and melodic playing and a great songwriter.

Delay boxes "That can get out of control very easily and frequently does with me". I've seen Queen about 8 times starting in 1982, and the one thing Brian never is, is out of control. Every note was in place, bang on time. His Brighton Rock solos with the delay are memorable, and 100% in control.

I can play very similarly to Hendrix, Vaughan and Clapton but NEVER, NEVER like Brian may, he is so original and unorthodox! He’s not a pentatonic guy, he’s so unique, what a special player!! Unmatched!
My copy of this on VHS was one of my most favourite things I ever owned. I watched this so many times the tape got totally chewed to bits...
Dr. Brian May...Still humble today 2021..and Still going strong..he championed/backed up many a singer through the years..now that's humility! We love you Brian, always & forever...Canada..
He is such a good player, everything he plays is really considered but when he plays, it is done with a real sense of feeling and although it has all been thought through, it still sounds spontaneous....it all flows perfectly. That is the sign of a truly great player in my opinion. Any decent guitarist can play fast, but fast with clarity and feeling is not easy. Hats off to a true great.

I am a Japanese guitarist and artist and I will continue to pursue my picking skills in order to one day be able to play my own unique tone.

What an all round talented human being. One of the greatest to ever play. You can tell it's him straight away after a few notes. Not many guitarists have that ability to have such a unique and captivating voice to their playing.
