Well it’s not entirely caused by what they ate. Lol. And average life expectancy takes the “average”. So many humans unfortunately didn’t make it past childhood causing this young age life expectancy. It’s not like everyone just dropped dead at 35 lol. Also many of us would be dead many times over if it wasn’t for modern medicine and antibiotics so I really wouldn’t take much stock in their diet..

The average life expectancy was so much shorter; infant mortality rates were sadly prevalent. The "good old days" were not so good, health-wise. Both my grandmothers died when they were in their 40s and probably from illnesses that could have been cured medically even without surgery. Thank you so much, Dr. Dray for you logical and important knowledge.

Yeah it’s to bad they didn’t have our standards for being clean! No one would have gotten ill and died from these diseases related to filth. Modern society really has less need for doctors and surgeons when it comes to those types of things. Unfortunately we live so well now that people are very overweight and cause cancer to themselves with their gluttony and poor food choices. I wish there was a happy medium. Living the old lifestyle when it comes to food and doctors, but with our new found cleanliness. Disease would be gone if we could just control ourselves and keep a happy medium

They didn't have all the plastics, drugs in the water etc but if you got sick or had difficulty in childbirth it wasn't so bright. Even dental work 70 years ago was awful according to my dad, no freezing back then. I wonder how the nutrition was without all of the fortified foods and knowledge too.

@@hippiegypsygirl So perfectly said. Especially about the cleanliness-big time HUGE difference way back in the day. Also how we have constant 24/7 access to so much junk food, along with less physical daily demands-no wonder people 'unto themselves' end up with cancer and other diseases. Great point about the 'happy medium'.🌞🍁

Also, our ancestors wore more clothing. Women particularly had their legs & arms covered, wore hats, gloves etc. While they may "labor" in the sun, they were much less likely to bake in it.

My relatives who lived the longest drank a lot of water and ate more vegetables than anything else. Meat was supplemental, not the primary of their meals. Fruit was fresh and seasonal. Sweets were for special occasions. My MOIL lived to 91 in her own home. She had a great quality of life. She ate regular meals and drank tea every day. Teas, even iced tea are a great beverage compared to soda or alcohol. I always observe the differences between those with and without chronic illness. Some things are out of our control but can be easier to manage with dietary choices. I will be satisfied if I live to 75, anything beyond is going to be a gift.

That's how I feel about home births without any medical assistance.
Things could suddenly go very wrong, very fast, and you're a 40min drive away from the hospital and maybe the baby or the mother just won't make it.
"Oh but our bodies are made to do it, women used to have home births without medical assistance 150 years ago"
Well... that's why the childbirth death rates were so high 150 years ago, because they had no medical assistance in case something went wrong.
"Oh but I want *the experience* of having my baby at home without medical assistance"
OK but...do you want to have a healthy, preferably *alive* child, or do you want *an experience* ?

So on point. Thanks for an honest evaluation of this subject, as always. Refreshing and you are also hilarious. My great-grandmother died of what was probably uterine cancer, we are not sure because they were itinerant farm workers and couldn’t afford doctors or medical treatment, and all she had to deal with horrific pain was BC powder. BC powder is an old headache remedy with aspirin and caffeine basically, think they put Tylenol in it now. My Mother remembers her gma screaming in pain for her BC powder, with only my 12 year old Mother to care for her, while her mom, my gma worked in the fields so they could eat cornbread, green onions, buttermilk, beans and greens and coffee from what my mom said. Oh, and my gma came in from the fields, had my mom in a barn and went back out into the rain to finish picking strawberries. So no, I do not want to live like in my families past. I couldn’t survive it. Unfortunately, some still do live that hard life today. They were/are stronger than me. But the advances of today are so much better. Like u said, if you think they had it better then, go back and try it. Enuf about me. Keep up the good work Dr. Dray.

My first full year of using OTC adapalene gel with success was because of your acne series. So thank you doc!

Hi Dr Gray, I have never heard any of your videos before, and I loved every minute of this one. So so hilarious. I wanted to reach out and ask about skincare. I suddenly broke out with red bumps a few years ago, prior to that I used a simple cleanser, moisturiser and spf. For 35 years of my life I had no skin issues. However the past 5 yrs have left me so confused. I went for skin peels, tried micro needling, changed spf to mineral, tried different ones as my skin broke out, introduced vitamin c, Hyaluronic acid and Niacinamide as well as Retinoid at night and rosehip oil. But still have congestion, small whiteheads that you notice either in the sun or when I wash my face (can feel the little buggers.
Now I wash with cerave hydrating cleanser. I don’t use a moisturiser as I use a mineral spf which moisturises as well. At night, I alternate between retinoid and rosehip oil. It’s been 4 months and I still can’t seem to get rid of the whiteheads and the odd breakout. Once a week I use the cerave salicylic cash wash (to exfoliate the skin).
Pls advise. I’m tempted to go back to a skin clinic, but all they will do is offer more peels, Hydrafacials and expensive products.
    What do you advise?

Happy Saturday, Dr Dray! I prefer an actual book over an audio one. I have the same issue as you when listening to a book. Puts me right to sleep. Since finding you, I've kept my skin care routine super simple. I've been using Cerave cleanser and moisturizer for a few years but did just recently buy the Aveeno oat cleanser and moisturizer which I've been enjoying. I do, however, switch up sunscreens occasionally. My go to is the Walgreens sensitive one. I recently bought the Jack Black one that you've recommended in the past but haven't opened it yet. Enjoyed the vlog. Hope you have a relaxing evening. 💗

Many of our ancestors also wore big ol hats/bonnets and long sleeves/long skirts and pants even in the heat (linen is great at keeping you cool and was a common fabric to use). So they did protect their skin from the sun the best they could! There are Victorian skin “protectant” recipes with zinc…you bet they’d use modern spf if they had access to it.

Now I don’t know what to use anymore. I use cerave cleanser, followed by SPF. At night I use retinoid and then alternate it with rosehip oil.

I have been buying Ella Baché Sunguard Foundation SPF 40+ since the mid 80's. 100% mineral UVA UVB with an opaque coverage. Back then, as a teen, I used to wear it all over my face...when it was OK to look like a mannequin! Since then, I have always have a tube in my makeup bag, as it is the best thing to conceal purple inner eye circles, or other stubborn spots/dark marks on the skin. You can use it very sparingly (as I do now with another sunscreen underneath), or you can build it up until you get the desired effect. I'm so glad that wearing both sunscreen and a high SPF foundation has been protecting my skin all these years.

A lot of valid points, but Dr. Dray needs to look at the situation from the people’s perspective and address why people lose trust in medicine. I’ve been to doctors for help when they gave me nothing. I’ve been to a derm when I had severe acne. But they were no help. I alone figured out the solution through diet and have had clear skin for years. There are shortcomings in medicine. But some doctors just want to put the blame on the public.

The majority of doctors I have ever visited have never really been interested in curing disease or thier patients because if they did they could not keep you coming back. I have faced this with my aging father as he has had various medical conditions that almost killed him and to this day, the two doctors that should have caught it and fixed it (*he had a hole in his colon allowing gas to be in his urine stream for over a year) never found it and as we are facing another serious matter, they just cannot seem to figure it out. They just keep pumping him full of more and more medication....because that is the big pharma answer. We may have all this technology to discover more, but we sure don't seem to cure ANYTHING. It is a sad reality that in this video Dr Dray seems to just make fun of people, belittle and negate the experiences more people than not have had with the medical profession. Gentle cleanse, Missha Essence, Sunscreen, moisturizer (Cetaphil Redness Relief), and Retin-A. I will stop using the Retin-A if I notice my skin is a little tingly or tight, I give it a rest for a few days and stop washing in the morning.
At 54, menopause is making my skin change, it's a little drier, a little more sensitive - therefore, I have to pay attention and adjust accordingly. And no harsh scrubs or anything with essential oils/fragrance. I used my husband's sunscreen, it had fragrance. I weighed the benefits of reapplying vs. not and boy did my skin react to the fragrance! Red, angry bumps all over my face, neck, ears. I won't do that again!

    To answer your question:
I had acne and it’s almost gone, very oily skin still. Been doing this routine for a year now and will keep continuing. Used to buy paula’s choice only, then switched to the ordinary only, got into the korean skin care realm... now finally found something solid lol
    Morning
-to cleanse, I use either water, cerave hydrating cleanser or benzac benzoyl peroxide cleanser (depends on my acne)
    -cerave PM moisturizer
    - TO azelaic acid
-eucerin oil control spf50 (most comfortable sunscreen ever for oily skin)
    Evening
    -pyunkang yul oil cleanser
    -cerave hydrating cleanser
-I’m from mugwort essence when I feel fancy
    -cerave moisturizing cream
    -tretinoin 0.05%, every other day
Sometimes I use paula’s choice bha instead of tretinoin, when I do that I won’t use benzoyl peroxide in the morning or the morning after to keep my skin at rest and not irritate it too much.
I use Cerave eye cream along with these routines but just to feel fancy, I know that it does next to nothing as it’s just Cerave PM but slightly thicker, but I like the luxury feel lol.
And the mugwort essence is not particularly necessary, but I use it to hydrate & soothe instead of using a hyaluronic acid serum because my moisturizer already has that.
Really happy with this routine, finally found something that works, consumerism within the skin care industry used to really get to me but now that I’m consistent I realized I don’t need more lol.
One thing I’d still like to change is to use the paula’s choice azelaic acid instead of the ordinary one, because TO one is kinda thick, but the price tag... can’t bother. Maybe when I get a better job lol.

These topics will cross over into diet and the physiology of nutrition. Two weeks of nutrition training for someone with a strong background in how the human body functions is entirely different from two weeks of nutrition training for someone who's starting from scratch.

    Awesome rant about diets! 👏👏👏
And I totally use the same skin care products for years and ignore the marketing. My preference is to find what works and stick w it. Face: acne.org’s cleanser, their benzoyl peroxide, LRP adapalene, and Cerave moisturizing cream (sometimes Vaseline too). Body: dove sensitive skin bar, Amazon’s benzoyl peroxide wash, and Cetaphil lotion. I finally found an SPF that works for me and I’m sticking with it as long as I can ship it to the states: UltraSun Family SPF 30.

I love how irritated you get. It’s so funny. I use the same skin care all the time, but I do get tempted to get new stuff but I stop myself. Retin-a took me a year to really see the difference

i use the same benzoyl peroxide since I was 14 for acne. I used to use cetaphil cleanser and moisturizer for over a decade and switched to cerave cleanser and moisturizer for the past 3 years. The only other ingredient is tret (about 14 months). I like sticking with the same products.

Good video. Tooth decay also played a big part of early death. The beauty industry is a huge cash cow. Sometimes I wonder, why do our faces need the touted 10 step routine, when no other body skin needs that.

I have pulled back on the number of products. A cleanser - CereVe or Avenno at night, and Panoxyl in the am. Neutrogena hydroboost water gel, the a CereVe moisturizer. Then a sunscreen. I did try the Avenno oat boost (whatever) drops but I didn't feel it did much and it had fragrance. Less is more.

(I’m 25, for reference) I will say I’ve never had major skin issues until earlier this year. Never had acne as a teenager. I’ve used the same skin care for as long as I can remember. Just the Cervae Hydrating Cleanser and the Cerevae AM/PM moisturizers. The only thing I’ve changed (due to acne that came randomly, I battled for months and finally) added the Cerevae Benzoyl Poroxide cleanser. The acne is under control but I do use the cleanser still, a few times a week to prevent any from returning. I’m not a fan of changing things. Even with cosmetics, I’ve used the same makeup products for years. The only time I change is if they discontinue a product.

I’ve been using Biologique Recherche P50 1971 Original every morning since 1982. I also use sunscreen every day. I apply it on all exposed skin. And reapply throughout the day. I love Vaseline on my lips, feet.

I do believe that doctors are taught and trained to prescribe a drug for medical problems instead of aiming towards nutrition to possible solve their medical issue. Nothing against doctors.

    • @ProudShipperVII
      @ProudShipperVII 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, I think the biggest problem is that it is assumed that people will never be compliant because they won't change their diet. So they have to prescribe the drugs. Many people may not be willing to change their diet, but not everyone - and the small percentage of people who would happily change their diet to solve their problem aren't even told that it could help. This is an unfair situation. If people do find this out (by themselves, or via Dr Google I might add) how can you blame them for feeling cheated, or believing that Drs get limited training on nutrition? It just adds fuel to the fire.

Patients are in a habit of acting lazy, they’re looking for pills instead of lifestyle change (which is a lot harder to achieve). Medicine is NOT a prevention strategy, lifestyle is! Sleep, nutrition, mental health, body movement, etc. Doctors and pharma are doing EXACTLY what their customers want: easy pills for their problems. People must look in the mirror for the source of their lifestyle design, be it good or bad. Being healthy is a matter of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY in vast majority of cases.

My skincare for the past year and a half have been. La roche posay foaming purifying gel cleanser, adapalene either LRP or diffrin, and diffrin restorative night cream. In the morning I use sunscreen, the only product I really only switch up. My skin has been so great I almost never exfoliate I just make sure to cleanse my skin very well every night. I used to suffer from acne and rosacea and hardly every have a breakout. I used to always try new products but now I just stick to the simplest routine amd it’s been a game changer

I used the Neutrogena Oil-free Sensitive Skin moisturiser for many years. I had sensitive acne-prone skin and it was the only one I tried that didn't cause irritation (plus I was scared of anything oily). That was pre-Dr Dray. I changed things up often but that was one product I used more often than not. Post Dr Dray: I've basically bought and still testing every single item mentioned on this channel!
