LAKE DISTRICT FELL RUNNING | LORDS RAKE & THE WEST WALL TRAVERSE | THE BOB GRAHAM DIARIES

  • In this video I go in search for the West Wall Traverse. As a means for getting from Scafell Pike to Sca Fell it is a popular option for those taking on the Bob Graham Round.
The other option is via Foxes Tarn gully and Foxes Tarn. There are 101 ways to get up any mountain but these two options tend to be the ones used when taking on the Bob.
As mentioned in my first Bob Graham recce video I intend to do a series of videos covering the whole route. Whether I complete the series before I make an attempt on the challenge is another question.
However, there will be small sections and bits of the Bob thrown into my overall training so don't be surprised if they keep cropping up in the videos that get uploaded.
This run was done during November 30th 2023 and what a stunning day it was. Lords Rake and the WWT are a small part of a larger training run which ended up being 13.5 miles with 6,539 ft of elevation.
As mentioned in the video it was two days before we had a large dump of snow over the Lake District.
It was a perfect storm causing total chaos. people abandoning cars, hotels opening free rooms to stranded motorists and Cumbria Police declaring it a major incident. Additionally it caused an 18hr power cut in my area.
Which was a pain in the arse.
It always amazes me when this sort of thing happens and we seem to be so unprepared for it.
Alas, it's all part of the grand tapestry of life and it's what makes living in this part of the world so enjoyable.
    Thanks for watching
    John.

".. . .. then it all melted and now it's raining" Just about sums up Lakeland winter conditions John 😀 Another great vid John, really enjoy watching them. Keep up the good work, you have a great format and presentation style 👍👍

Great video John, I remember your winter video from last year so it’s good to see these coming through again. Stunning day for a blast around the Lakes, enjoyed it, thanks and good luck for your next one mate 👏🏻

What a day. Watched twice already as those clear views make for great watching. It looked really warm to me and hardly any wind. You sure it was really 🥶? 😀 Didn’t fancy hopping over the wrynose pass ? Wasdale is such a great starting point for the higher fells but the journey to the west part of the Lakes is a long trek. I only have Middle Fell to complete my wainwrights. Roll-on March. I have a large photo-based picture in the lounge taken from the top of Whinn Rigg looking over to Lingmell with the early morning a sun - I do occasionally drift into a daze when I look at that picture. It was so quiet people-wise, probably too warm😂. I recall your last winter trek corridor route and over to Lords Rake in the slushy snow? That ‘s over a year of videos - fantastic effort. 🎉🎉🎉 I’m not sure I share your “easy route to find in the dark” route assessment. Ps can we leave the nut bitty 😂 🤮 recipe and move to a different recipe 👍

I didn’t see a soul all day. Not often I get the Pike all to myself. Those days are rare 👌🏻🙂

Top notch video John. Loving the long form. That looked like a bitty freezing breeze up there, but having those fells to yourself is amazing! I'd choose WWT over Foxes Tarn every time. Only once felt a bit dicey on a day when it was pouring with water and another BG group were coming down as we went up! Hugely entertaining. Awesome stuff 👍💪💪

Loving the channel so please keep it going. Genuinely really greatful for your Map chats. I love pouring over OS maps to plan my longer runs. From the south and don't get to explore the lakes enough so to have you talking though lines and routes with the map together is super helpful. Even makes the prospect of a few off the path hikes feel more possible. Great stuff.

I’ve done that (minus the last Whin Rigg loop) as a walk. In my naivety I did think about Slight Side, so now have a hill in the middle of nowhere still to do 🤦🏻‍♂️
Not sure whether quickest round the side from Wasdale, or up from Wha House Farm 🤔

Evening John, hope you are ok mate.
We really enjoyed watching your latest film.
Having not yet ventured up Lord rake, your account has kicked me up the ass to get up to Scafell soon.
What a day out... got to say brilliantly put together, music
    Complimenting the action perfectly.
    Great account sir.
    Thanks for sharing your day.

Great stuff! I'm hoping to give the BGR a solid crack when I'm next over in the UK in July '24. I'm familiar with much of the route from a few recce's on recent trips over and trips to the Lakes when I was younger, but I've not done the Lord's Rake or West Wall Traverse so this was a great watch. (I did downclimb Broad Stand with my best mate about 30 years ago but probably won't be trying to emulate that on my round!)
