When Brian May was writing songs in the late 1980s, some were taken up for usage in Queen. Others were always destined to be solo songs. One such song is ‘Back To The Light’, the gloriously cathartic title-track from Brian’s debut solo album, released in 1992 and recently reissued.
The track has a physical release on CD and 7” vinyl October 22 coupled with his Freddie Mercury inspired ‘Nothin’ But Blue’, as well as a special digital release with a bonus ‘Back To The Light’ karaoke version.
The release also comes with a brand new video which Brian has revealed will bridge the passage of time between the original release and its current revisiting. “Time traveller”, is the only teaser he offers for now.

I was skeptical, but tbh once it got going I actually got a little choked up. I think when you consider that the song war written at a time when Brian was very depressed, watching an older Brian who has come through the other side on stage with his younger self is super poignant. Much love ❤

As much of a tragedy that COVID has been, I must say I would never have come to know Queen and Brian May as I do now without the quarantine. Staying home and learning to use the internet as I have, has been a blessing in disguise. You have brought me through many dark days. At 73, I can enjoy and love music that was so much a part of my history.

Sir Brian… I’ve had this album since it was new and I had the unique opportunity to see your impromptu free concert at the Agora in Cleveland, Ohio. Your performance was exceptional and I waited outside the theater for a chance to meet you. I spoke with Cozy Powel, first and then you came out to greet fans later. I had a chance to compliment your playing and your work as a producer and you seemed to be genuinely touched by my comments. Truly one of the most exciting and memorable times of my life. You have been an inspiration to me as a guitarist, a songwriter and as a producer throughout my own career. Thank you for remaining true to who you are and for sharing your gifts with the world so generously.
I am 72 yrs old and this music brings back so many memories and still seems so fresh and beautiful. Thank you Brian more keeping the music so alive.

What a beautiful concept for this music video! That moment at the end where Brian gently rests his arm on the shoulder of his past self. It illustrates well what I’m sure Brian is feeling when looking back fondly on the man he was then. All of the anxieties and dreams of that younger man I’m sure are things he still reflects on to this day. It seems quite appropriate for the song with the line, ”It’s still the same old me inside”, and makes my heart swell with joy to see Brian now doing what he does, in that same gentle, radiant manner. Brian put an amazing band together for this album/tour. The stupendous Cozy Powell (RIP) on the drums, the highly experienced Neil Murray on bass,the completely hatstand Spike Edney on keyboards,the unknown Jamie Moses as a second guitarist,the talented & beautiful backing singers Cathy Porter & Shelley Preston. And most importantly, Brian himself. A stellar band, that put on an amazing show. Good times

It talks about your depression and how you were struggling with a divorce and your life was in turmoil. You went yo your cabin woth no distractions and wrote your music . Truly the music within. @@shahaffiq5860 The first time I saw Queen was 1973, they were support band with Mott the Hoople, the following day I went to the nearest record shop to buy the album. The next time I saw them was 1974 when they were the headline band, (I think a band called Mr Big supported them). Everytime I have ever seen them play live they blew me away. I have seen many top bands over the years, Bowie, T.rex, Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Sabbath, really too many to mention, but Queen performing live have always been head and shoulders above all of them. Sadly now I am too old to do stadiums and my hearing is deteriorating as I also played in rock bands, but I have some great memories.
Brian, this is absolutely unreal in so many ways. You have managed to capture what it feels like to grow old, and yet inside we are still the same as so many years ago. I try to explain it to my kids, and now grandkids, and they cannot possibly begin to understand. I look in the mirror and do not recognize the old woman looking back at me. NO ONE has been able to explain it better than you. Thank you, once again for the gift of your music...and the bit of real-time travel. ( By the way...good one with the ento lullabye. Absolutely brilliant. I remember seeing Brain’s band in Brixton and I was blown away then. This is very special. I was also very privileged in seeing Queen many times over the years. My dad taking me to see them in 1978 at Earls Court, and then telling my Mum in the morning “that he’d never seen nothing like it before in his life” what a show that was. Hope to see Brian and Queen next year. Well done Bri!

I remember getting the cd of this (still have it and still listen to it in the car) as a teen and loving it. When I got the vhs of this I was blown away by the band.
My heart really goes out to Brian in this video as it must be so hard watching this and missing Cozy Powell so much.

I remember when this album came out and I bought it right away, because it felt like I needed some continuation after Freddie passed. And Brian delivered. He more than delivered. He knocked it out of the park.

I watched a video recently of Brian playing live with Yes just a couple of years back, and he plays so well and fast still!
I don't like soloists who always play at a million miles an hour, but Brian always knew when a fast run was appropriate, and at his age, it's wonderful he can still do that!
I say get in that studio and use those magic fingers!!
Maybe Brian won't read this, but anyway I need to thank Dr Bri for so much.
I have battled depression for over 30 years and it has been a very tough ride on many occasions.
At 46 I'm no better now than at 16 but I do have one wonderful tool to give me something nothing else in life can give... Busking!
After falling in love with Queen aged 9 in '84, my interest in music grew intensely, driven in large part by this amazing guitar tone and the magic fingers behind it.
I began teaching myself guitar and writing songs with my (now sadly passed) brother Simon.
Through 20 years of learning, I never had the confidence to perform to an audience, and found it all the more difficult having lost my brother, but when I was 38, circumstances meant I had no option but to go busking for cash.
For the first two days I could only play (Nylon acoustic) but on day three a voice in my head said 'just sing'... So I did.
Eight years later and busking is still the one thing in my life that I do that fills me with joy and confidence, and I know has a positive impact on the days of many passers by.
One of the reasons I single out Brian as important to me is because of his experience with depression and those wonderful songs he has written about it! Truth and hope all in one.
Dr May, thank you so much for a lifetime of entertainment, education and emotion, and especially for giving me the seed to become what I am now - which I wouldn't change for the whole world!
