- Brian May announces re-release and new music video of his classic single ‘DRIVEN BY YOU’ ahead of remastered Back To The Light album. “The song Freddie Mercury generously gave his blessing to be my solo track.” Released on June 25, 2021. Brian May’s first solo hit, and the unforgettable TV ad it was made for, came from the most unlikely of origins. ‘Driven By You’ is, without doubt, one of rock’s most rousing and lasting anthems. Originally written for a Ford car television commercial, the solo track was a worldwide hit when it first debuted as a single off May’s 1992 ‘Back To The Light’ album. But the unforgettable song had its beginnings oceans away from the open roads of the UK countryside that were framed in that TV ad.
Originally released in November 1991, ‘Driven By You’ saw success worldwide including reaching No 6 on the UK Singles Chart and No 9 on the US Billboard Album Rock Chart. Re-released to download on June 25 ahead of the forthcoming re-mastered reissue of May’s “Back To The Light” album on August 6, the reissue of the track comes with a scorching new 30th Anniversary video edit. The performance was originally filmed when the Queen legend sang the track live for the first time at the 1991 Guitar Legends concert in Seville, Spain, and during his 1992 South America tour.

Happy birthday to one of the greatest guitarists on the whole damn planet, Brian May!
Listening to this song makes you realise just how important Brian is to the sound of queen as a whole. Queen isn't just the Freddie Mercury show.
back in 92 I used to think the same, but also, you know what's missing there?? his pals voices and Ideas... if you listen to the headlong demo (from innuendo) you can clearly see how important were the 4 ladies together. with that basis how this would have sound with John bass line, Freddie's voice and killer roger drum fills.
also let me add that, in some Brian songs Freddie's voice is to powerful, saying this, I prefer the too much love will kill you in Brian's solo album than the later Queen cut
Freddie is the best lead singer/frontman of all time.
Brian is one of the best guitarists of all time and might be a better songwriter than Freddie
Brian clearly wrote this with Freddie in mind as a singer.

The first car seen on the vid at 1:03 is driven by Adrian, besides him in the front seat is his mother. The second car seen on the vid at 1:06 is driven by my friend Roberto, Mariel is also in the front seat besides him; in the back seat is a younger Claudio (me, now I'm 53🤣) thumbs up for you 👍, besides me are Danny and Jimena. All we were devoted Brian and Queen fans!! Life is a roller coaster, and for that very moment we feel we were in the ride with you. Our energy and passion can be seen in our faces, we could hardly believe you were so near us! We were lucky enough to meet Rudy Dolezal with his camera capturing all the action, but I think we are representing so many passionate fans throughout the world who love, enjoy, need, support and believe in your music since your first steps with your band.
I remember I was so sad with Freddie recently gone, and very afraid of Queen light to turn off, but your songs definitely took me back to the light, and somehow fortunately Queen light also is today brighter than ever before. Lo que vos contás también es genial!! y si saco bien las cuentas curiosamente tenías casi la misma edad en 2008 que la que yo tenía en éste video 😀 Estas cosas inolvidables son las que hacen que toda nuestra vida sea un poco mejor. Yo también estoy convencido de que la imagen del minuto 3:53 es una de las vistas de la terraza del hotel Sheraton de Bs As, donde se alojaron todos en ésa oportunidad y desde donde los acompañamos para despedirlos en Ezeiza. El equipo de Brian grabó varias cosas ahí. Hay otras varias imágenes en blanco y negro en el video que también fueron tomadas en Argentina, así como hay otras que son de Brasil. I love Freddie, of course, Roger and John - they each add their own talent and are amazing people in their own rights - but I admit, Brian has always been my 'favourite'. I mean, what a guy. Makes me both laugh and sad that he doesn't think he's a particularly great singer. Back to the Light is an *incredible* album, and I am so, so, so excited that it's finally getting the attention and recognition it deserves, all these years later. Never pre-ordered something so fast. This new 2021 mix sounds awesome (can't wait for the remaster of 'Resurrection') and I just know the whole package is going to be flawless.
A true singer, a true guitarist, composer, and frontman. Fantastic. Back to the Light is a proper rock record, thirty years on.

I totally agree with Lindsey. Mercury and the boys write excellent songs...but Brian is a smidge better. His songs always move the heart and soul. "Gimme the Prize" makes me feel like I can call down thunderbolts, whilst "Sail away sweet sister" brings me to tears. Brian is a master of Heavenly metal. (Resurrection anyone?)

Pretty sure Brian played all instruments on the album. This is from Wikipedia.
Shortly before releasing it as single, May played it on the Guitar Legends concert in October 1991, having a super-group backing him: Cozy Powell on drums, Neil Murray on bass, Steve Vai on rhythm guitar, Rick Wakeman and Mike Moran on keyboards, Maggie Ryder, Miriam Stockley and Chris Thompson on backing vocals.

@@markpalmer7215 in the original song you're right: Cozy did not play the drums, but on my album from 1992 on most of the other songs drums are performed by Cozy. I think that this video is from one of their live performances

I feel so nostalgic and with mixed emotions watching this😢💖😊😔. I love this song, and I remember Brian s show on November 1992,in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was the 1st show I ever attended. I even met him at the entrance of the hotel in which he was staying 💖💖He was very kind💞💞. (Btw, I think that some of the images may be from that show and from Buenos Aires). He was not in his best shape, for personal yet known reasons, but it was tremendously moving. And Cozy Powell, rip😢 passed away some months later. And I've just remembered that I attended this show with my best friend and with a cousin of mine (who was like a son for my mom) who passed away (an accident with his motorcycle) last week😢😢. But yet, it's a nice memory

I e had the privilege to see Brian in 98 solo and he was amazing. Seen him 5 times with Freddie and 2 times with Paul Rodgers and 4-5 times with Adam. I’ve never been disappointed! I love it when he sings, his voice is so expressive.

As a kid I remember this song being on the Ford Escort Cosworth advert. Such a class tune!
That ruined the song for me , I still hear it as advert music. Same with that Lenny Kravitz song.

Aside from seeing Queen at Wembley with Freddie and going to the Freddie Tribute Concert I was fortunate to see the Brian May Band live in Cardiff . I recall Cozy walking into the building in front of us . It was before I had white hair..
I was also fortunate to see BMB live, in Madrid. And Brian himself was walking into the building at ~2m distance from me!!

I still say this is the best driving song, ever. It is still my favorite Queen/May song after all these years. Its a song to "give it the beans" to, which is ironic as it was playing on the stereo when I was stationary and had my car shortened by 2 feet in an accident. A Vauxhall hit by a Ford Orion. Two weeks of not being able to walk, all I had to listen to was "Back to the Light".
Now, in 2021, its the first track on a self-burned compilation CD in the old Land Rover. The CD player is broken and won't eject the disc, and will only play the first track...
And Ford was the parent company of Jaguar, Rover and Land Rover at one point in the 90s.
