My childhood idol was Dominique Dawes, who never got her flowers back then because her “look,” wasn’t preferred, which is code for too muscular, hair and skin too different. I had no idea then, that gymnastics would be what it is today.

Gabby also was dealing with Mykayla’s racist ass retweets. She was left out of the all around because of the 2-per country rule (fun fact: America supported this rule when we weren’t so dominant and the Eastern Europeans were. Now it’s biting us in the ass. lol), she was also a victim of Larry Nassar, racism, depression and at this time, it was still normal for there to only be “one black girl allowed to succeed,” mentality, and it was Simone now. I think Gabby always felt like an outsider and unlike Simone, her 2012 win was always coupled with “she robbed Komova,” rhetoric. I wish she had one more cycle before Simone became a senior. Simone and in the scene a year after Gabby’s win, and it’s been all about her, since. Gabby is a beautiful gymnast and I hope she and Simone become the new Chusos and competing for years to come as specialists.

She was dealing with a lot at the time like people saying she shouldn’t be on the team etc. but mainly in this moment I’m sure she was thinking SHE wanted to be in the all around final instead of Raisman especially because gabby won it in 2012. Unfortunately all 3 couldn’t do it
