Jamaican here: I had this at an event in college and couldn’t remember what it was called. I’ve been looking for it for 7 years now. Thank you! I needed this!
He’s right He was supposed to stir fry the veggies then add the meat. He also forgot one bay leaf. And it is actually called Pastelon. Puerto Rican’s fry the plantains and layer it like lasagna noodles. We also add Ricotta or Queso Blanco. And Mozzarellas cheese. If you are vegan you substitute vegan cheese and crumble for ground meat.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Definitely look up/google "pastelon dominicano" or "pastelon puertorriqueño". Both versions r sooo yummy. In my home (ecuadorian/costa rican) we don't mash the sweet plantains we fry them up in long eighth of an inch slices (not too thin) and thats what we use in lieu of the sweet plantain mash.
A lot of cheeses have WAY less lactose than milk. Idk if he's lactose intolerant, but I am and I can eat most hard cheeses but milk will mess up my day.
I'm terribly lactose intolerant and can eat all hard cheeses. They lost the lactose while maturing... I'll make my cheese sauce with lactose free milk but will be ok with the cheese itself. Butter doesn't bother me either, as well as Yogurt. But let me have some milk or ice cream and it's a trip down suffering lane.
"With lactose intolerance, you can still eat cheese, but choose carefully. Hard, aged cheeses like Swiss, parmesan, and cheddars are lower in lactose. Other low-lactose cheese options include cottage cheese or feta cheese made from goat or sheep's milk."
This looks so good Gadiel, you did a great job. I do recommend adding cheese between the meat & platanos & then doing a cheesy egg wash (mixing eggs, milk, and cheese) for the top layer. It's how my mom taught me adds a really nice texture, taste, and look to it.
I’m Peruvian but I grew up in nyc and I love dominican food! Pastelon is honestly my favorite, when I would see it at the dominican deli I would get so excited! Love you DR
What the hell you mean in Puerto Rico we fry bla bla bla you idiot. PASTELON ISSS ISSS A AUTHENTIC PUERTO RICAN DISH. THERE IS NO SU DOMINICAN PASTELON.
Fun fact: I'm Brazilian and we call this recipe Escondidinho which means Little Hidden (lol) we call it that way cuz you cover the meat with a layer of mashed potatos (or in Gadiel's case: platanos) so you hide the meat doing that, that's why we call it Little Hidden. In Brazil a lasagna needs to have at least 3 to 4 layers of meat and mashed potatos and between those layers we add cheese. Tbh I've never made Brazilian lasagna all by myself cuz it's a lot of work the times I've made it were during family meetings with their help. It's such a long work that you can buy pre-cooked potato layers at Brazilian supermarkets so you don't have to worry about them. They are so thin that some people make very tall lasagnas using them, with more layers than 3 or 4. 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
I wanna try to make this. I'm Cuban Colombian from Miami and never heard of a pastelon. What have I been missing all my life lmao. Definetley making this. Make more dishes please Gadiel
Jokes aside I really appreciate this type of content as it exposes me to amazing cuisines from my Latin cousins ^^ people in the US are so lucky they can try all types of food, growing up in Latin America I would love to know my neighbouring countries' cuisines but it's a lot harder to gain access to it. It's also amazing cause the base ingredient are so similar so it's not hard to make these I just wouldn't have know the existence of those dishes. Love you pero like
He may have left it out b/c of his dislike for the peppers and cilantro taste, which of course are included in sofrito. I'm sure it would've given it a flavor boost though.
I love pastelon so much!!!!I'm Puerto Rican and Dominican. My mama who is Puerto Rican made it growing up and now I make a vegan version with lentils instead of meat and no cheese😘 Thank you Gadiel and Andee for posting this vid 🤗
I grew up in Puerto Rico. Mashing the plantains to use it in this we call it "PASTELÓN". Frying the plantains and use their slices in this we called it "PIÑÓN". I mean, you called it whichever way you want, but that's how we called it back home. It's delicious either way.

I’m half Dominican and half Puerto Rican. Everything was the same but Puerto Ricans don’t add cheese they use an egg to mend the platanos together. But all in all I’m definately doing this on the weekend. It’s been a minute since I had that. Good job!
What my family does is let the plátanos turn black. Right before they rot and the pastelón will come out sweeter. Also, instead of so much melty cheese, we use parm which doesn’t take away from the taste.
Gadiel, Dios Mii! Clearly you've seen someone cooking up some tasty food. You just got the wires crossed a little on the order, but good start for sure. Keep it up! Mama gave you the tools for sure. Mirate sudando jeje! Mete mano!

Came across this video while just finishing my pastelon de arroz and it has trocitos de amarillos. En vez de pasta o plátano usas arroz, carne molida con trocitos de amarillos, queso crema y queso rallado...delicioso.

I’ve never seen pastelon made this way but i guess it’s cause I’m Puerto Rican my family and all the Puerto Rican’s i know use Maduros Fritos instead of it mashed but still looks soooo amazing

Next time when boiling the platano maduro use less salt and put clavos, canella sticks, y un chin de star anais 😋 so it can sweeten the plantain even more and when it’s done when you mushing it add half teaspoon of brown sugar with the milk and butter
