Don't worry about medication, there is a certain stigma with taking medication but it's designed to help balance the chemicals in your brain. No one ever wants to take this route but sometimes it can help regulate your thoughts and feelings whilst you get a handle on other matters. If medication doesn't agree with you, you can always stop but don't feel bad, sometimes there are things out of our control and we just need that bit of extra help. I took a 6 month course after the loss of a friend and it was the best thing I did because the weight of depression became so heavy I couldn't pull through it on my own. So have a chat with your doctor and see what they recommend, I specifically take one for anxiety called Sertraline, I'm only on the lowest dose but it's enough to keep certain intrusive thoughts, feelings and emotions at bay. Do what is best for you ❤

Sim Kim I also take sertraline and it was a life saver for me. I was reluctant to take mediation but as my good friend told me,you’d take insulin if you was diabetic etc maybe it’s not for everyone but it made my life much more enjoyable x

I agree with you so much. I also take Sertaline and it’s made so much difference. I finally feel like my old self! I also didn’t want to take meds, always said I’d never go down that route and then I had a chat with my work colleague who told me if had a long term physical illness I’d be taking meds without any issues. The next day I went to the doctors and started my meds and I’ve never looked back. I’m still waiting for my therapy to start and hopefully that’ll walk hand in hand with the meds and I can recover fully. Good luck x

I knew I needed medication when I no longer felt like myself anymore. I was constantly anxious about getting anxious, which then made me even more anxious. 25mg of Sertraline at night made me feel like myself again! It's such a low dose you don't even really know you are taking it. Truly life changing.

Hi Rhiannon! Thanks for the mental health honest chat. I don't know how it is in the UK (I live in Canada), but there are different approaches to therapy - CBT is just one of them. There is also humanistic or psychodynamic therapy for instance. I personally been doing psychodynamic therapy for the past three years (for things like depression, anxiety, derealization (that stuck in a bubble feeling) and other conditions). This approach is very different to CBT (which I personally found useless for me, and even hurtful at times). The therapist doesn't necessarily give you advices, but rather we work together to try to figure out why I feel certain ways in certain situations and try to deconstruct it, we really dig deeply and uncover a lot of repressed emotions - it's like a very deep analysis of yourself. It takes A LOT of work and energy, it's very confronting - the emotional labour is real! But the benefits are SO SO SO worth it. I do take some medication which helps stabilize my mood (helpful for things like bipolar or borderline disorders - which I remember you mentioning a couple years ago), but this type of therapy has been the most helpful for me. It even helped with my migraines and IBS. You might already know all this, but I just wanted to share in case you didn't and want to try something else, but also for other people who might read this. Thanks for sharing your life, watching your vlogs brings me so much confort. Take care xx

I had 6 sessions of CBT over the course of 3 months last year, and I felt like the actually sessions themselves didn't help me however I came out of those three months with confidence in myself that I could tackle my anxiety and a new awareness for how unhelpful my thoughts were. A year later my anxiety is so much more manageable now, if I worry comes along I let it just sit there in my mind and it fades away, each time quicker than before!
Hope that helps and next time you have a bad phase, you feel confident enough to tackle it ☺️😘

I think it’s so important to talk about mental health and normalise the struggles that people have so others don’t have to feel alone or that they are a “freak” or anything, when truly so many of us struggle with many mental illnesses and hard times. Thank-you for using your platform to be so open and honest about such an important topic. I wish you nothing but the best on your mental health journey and that the CBT is helpful for you. Lots of love to you Rhiannon xx

Thanks for sharing your story more in depth with us! I felt the same way about medication, but there was a point I reached where I decided that I didn’t want to be the person who couldn’t get out of bed, or who mentally shut down after harmless phone calls! I didn’t like the thought of putting meds in my body, but they do help. For me I found a new sense of motivation and a sense of peace! It’s worth a shot, if after a while you decide you don’t like them you can always try something new like mediations or yoga. It might also be beneficial to do some research on specific essential oils! I know there are a few that you can keep on you that reduce anxiety and stress!

  • @indicamberr

And I can completely relate about being an anxious person. Even some of my earliest memories, I was just a very anxiety-ridden child and stayed stuck to my mom 24/7. It got worse when I started high school, and by the time I was in 11th grade I was just over it. I stopped going to school and went through a really bad time.
But anyway, having to take medication is not a bad decision nor does it make you a weak person. I know I couldn’t live a normal life if I wasn’t being helped by something. And, thank goodness everything is pretty much under control now. 🖤

Hi Rhiannon! Before resorting to medication for your anxiety look up the video "How the Gut Microbiome affects the Brain and Mind." I used to suffer from severe anxiety and depression, I switched from medication to medication and nothing sat right with me I always felt "off". It took a couple years to heal and re build my gut but I no longer take medication and I am no longer suffering from anxiety like I used to. You're such a wonderful person, I wish you all the best ♡♡♡

    • @anam.aria.
      @anam.aria. 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this!
Also a tongue tie can affect anxiety levels. Because the tongue presses on the vagal nerve (spelling?) which is the anxiety nerve. As soon as the tie is revised there is no pressure on that nerve and hence the anxiety is reduced considerably because you are no longer in a fight or flight mode.
I would also recommend looking into probiotics and natural supplements to help your mood rather than going into meds directly.
A naturopath is best to help. I hope you get the relief you need so much!

    Hi lovely,
Ive been on medication for about 4 years, and its helped so much. I think some people forget that anxiety/depression can be caused by a hormone imbalance which does need to be treated with medication. It may take a while to find one that suits, but please don’t rule it out!
You’re such a wonderful person and i really do hope you find the help you need :) xo

This is the same thought I had in regards to taking medication for anxiety and depression. I’ve been suffering for years without realising. After having a very bad low period a couple of months ago having panic attack on a daily basis and not wanted to leave the house to missing out on family plans. I decided enough is enough. I started on tablets to help and haven’t looked back. Not saying they are miracle workers but it helped me so so much. xxx

Hi Rhiannon! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with starting therapy - I’m so glad to hear it’s been positive so far! You mentioned you have a slight hesitation towards taking medication and while those feelings are SO valid, I just wanted to share my experience. As an anxious person with depressive episodes, I’ve been on a low dose of an anti-anxiety medication for 3 years now and it has changed my life (in combination with therapy). My anxious thoughts still exist, but I no longer fixate on them so much and uncontrollably spiral. I haven’t had a panic attack in over a year. Just something for your list of pros and cons, should to come to it!

There is nothing wrong with taking medication for anxiety, I found it helped me the most especially when it's combined with some form of counselling. I also suffered really badly with depersonalisation and still do get the odd occasional feeling of it. I thought I was never going to get out of this horrible feeling and felt trapped and like I couldn't live my life. I then started on Citalopram last year and it's worked/helped me so much. Give it a try - I live in the U.K. So you could chat to your doctor about trying this!

I'm waiting myself for therapy but have been told it's a long waiting list (6 months to a year I think) but at least I know it's going to be available to me eventually. i am on medication for anxiety and depression (mainly depression) and like you i was super hesitant to start it and I didn’t feel comfortable relying on a pill to regulate my mood and thoughts but it has actually been such a great help! The medication I’m in now took a little while to work and it wasn’t the first one I tried, but you need to stay on it for a little while to give it a chance to kick in and do it’s job, but obviously if it’s making you feel much much worse, go to a doctor and get taken off it. At first I got really dizzy and sweaty and even vomited a few times but that was just my body adjusting to it and I’ve been on it now for about 7-8 months and it just helps make the lows not as low as they used to be

I’ve suffered with anxiety for a long time, I used to get it when I was very young and got short of breath, they gave me an inhaler as they thought it was asthma! I still struggle but the thing that helped me the most was working in a nursing home for a year, this has helped more than therapy ever did for me! Learning from the older generations really gave me a new perspective on life and really opened my mind to not worrying as much about literally everything. It didn’t fix my anxiety as I always think I’ll have it but it doesn’t overwhelm me like it used to and I feel a lot more in control. I’ve tried medication and everything, it wasn’t that I wasn’t against it, it just didn’t work for me.

I’m starting therapy as well, and I feel SO similarly to you. It’s when you come out of the hole that you reach out for help - and then it’s like oh I’m fine, why am I doing this again? How will they help me when I’m so aware? - but ultimately the cycle continues and although I feel better than I did before setting up the therapy appointments...there are anxieties that will continue to come up unless properly dealt with. So now I’m on a 6-month plan with a therapist I found and like and I’m feeling more optimistic since coming back consistently. Anywho - wishing you the very very best - always. You are amazing and so happy to see you grow and build up your life. Best of luck with your self care journey!

great that your CBT is going well! My mom is a counselor and she says that a common misconception about counselors is that they tell you how to fix your anxiety, they actually reword and shape questions so that you figure out how you can help and control your anxiety. Another misconception is that people want to move too quickly through therapy while each step is important to follow and most importantly follow through with to the point that you have using the different mechanisms almost all of the time and not just knowing them and not putting them into practice.

Everything you described in your anxiety is almost exactly how I describe it to my husband. Racing thoughts and being drowned out by my own brain! Often times everything is okay in my life, normal life stressors, but I have trouble realizing that there isn’t sense getting worried and afraid of every little thing because usually it’s out of my control. Letting go of the sense of control of things in life is a main trigger of my anxiety. I see a mindfulness counselor! Mindfulness and meditation has done wonders for me, just recognizing when my thoughts are racing and irrational and taking a moment to honor those feelings with compassion and then checking into how my body is feeling. Anyway! Just wanted to share what’s helped me❤️

I know that you probably won’t see this but thank you for talking about CBT in your vlog. I did CBT a few years ago and it completely changed my life! I went from having 8-9 panic attacks a day to having a panic attack maybe once a month if that. I went from a suicidal anorexic teen hating myself to a ‘normal’ person I guess you could say. Thank you for talking about it because it can give hope to other sufferers. It seems like on TH-cam and social media people talk about having anxiety and depression but not as many people talk about how to get better. All my love xx

It's good that you're talking bout anxiety, there are so many people who feel embarrassed to talk about it. My husband has suffered with it for years on and off. In the last couple of years he's been through a really tough time, having panic attacks and pretty much constantly feeling rubbish. He went on an NHS course to do with managing stress/ anxiety and had therapy over the phone through work. They did help, but as it was work related he needed the extra help of the medication until he could find and move to another job. Thankfully he's much happier in his current job and is on the mend with his medication being gradually reduced.

I had cbt for anxiety and although it helped me understand everything it ultimately didn’t make my anxiety go away and because of that my depression got worse. After putting it off for so long I went to the drs for medication, i felt like such a failure as I felt the same way as you. 3 months later I’m a completely different person! I thought they would make me feel a bit happier but I didn’t realise they would take away my anxiety. Obviously I still have anxious thoughts but it’s no longer obsessive and I rarely have physical side effects now.
Please don’t be scared to try, you don’t have to take them forever and there are many options. Im on sertraline as I’m breastfeeding. I really hope anyone feeling the same way can get the help they need, please ignore the stigma! 💖

I know how you feel about medication but honestly there is nothing wrong with taking it and it makes no sense fighting it, if your brain doesn't produce a certain hormone (or whatever it is) there is nothing wrong with taking it, I think it's the right thing to do. If you can sort it out without meds, even better, but don't feel bad if you have to take anything Rhiannon! xx

Hi Rhiannon! I also have anxiety and a combination of taking CBD oil every day and working out as often as possible along with practicing meditation has helped me so much to cope. That being said, if nothing works for you don't feel bad about trying medication! It's literally changed the lives of many of my friends and it can be wonderful. I wish you the best on this journey, I know its a constant one.

I’m on medication too and it has helped as much as I really do not like having to take it to keep a good balance. But I hope CBT will be helpful

Rhiannon, have you considered trying a special SAD light to treat your seasonal depression symptoms? Both my brothers suffered from it when the dark set in and just eating breakfast in front of their light every morning helped immensely with their mood and motivation. Wish you the best with your journey to heal your bod and mind xx

rhiannon - that out of body bubble feeling is called derealization. i would get it every now and again during anxious periods of my life. it took my boyfriends mom - who is a clinical psych - to finally put a name on it. knowing what it was when it was happening helped a lot in calming me down when i'd have the feeling.

I kind of understand where you’re coming from with the anxiety thing. I suffer from SEVERE social anxiety and it’s kept me from being able to work for so long because I always panic during interviews and turn bright red etc... . It’s a hard struggle because even though I know there’s nothing to be anxious about I just am. I hope the therapy works out for you and you feel better. :)

I've struggled with depersonalisation/dissociation for years and it is the weirdest thing ever to try and explain. Simultaneously feeling not real but too real at the same time. Therapy definitely helped me and I'm happy to see anyone else struggling with the same things receiving/seeking help because I know how distracting and awful it feels. I've been told that during an episode you should try things that shock your senses ie. holding ice cubes, eating something sour. It sort of shocks your mind back in place. I don't know if that is helpful lol

I use CBT techniques in my job and it is the most effective technique I have used. One of the best therapies out there! It is about learning how to challenge your behaviours and thoughts and feelings and to learn how your fears, anxieties are very unlikely to come true :) I recommend you look up the technique called 'grounding'. It can be effective in controlling your body during varied emotions such as anger, anxiety or panic.

Love from Charlotte, North Carolina. I’ve been watching you for years and the fact that you’re taking therapy is inspiring. I’ve been recommended therapy. I had it assigned to me in high school and left after the first session (I cried during the session, and I guess it’s because I felt offended in a way that I didn’t give consent to the therapy, they just called me in one day).

Hi Rhiannon, thanks for speaking so honestly about mental health et depression, I think it's a real need that mental illness doesn't remain a "tabou". I also struggle with anxiety, and low phases/depressive phases and I totally agree with some comments about stoping coffee, it really helped for me, reducing anxiety crises and heart palpitations and all (also weirdly helping to have a clearer mind!) About medication, I don't know if homeopathy treatments for anxiety and depression are available in England but many things exists in France (like Euphytose), think it's a good option for classic medicine that is sometimes a bit too excessive for some type of mental health struggles i think. Meditation is also a super powerful practice for the mind and reconnexion with the body :) Much love from France !

I got CBT for my OCD when I was 20 after I starting getting panic attacks and thinking I was going mad. I took 5 CBT appointment and started a very small amount to meds (10g for the plan for it to go up) but I never needed too up my dose CBT worked wonders but I never finished the course. Then 6 months later I stopped taking the meds and thought I was fine, a year and half later I got pregnant and the anxiety came right back. I restarted the CBT and really gave it my all (digging deep to what was wrong) sometimes it would feel like we are saying the same thing each week and some times I really needed to speak with my therapist. (See if you can space them out 2 weeks if you think that will help) I never needed to go back on meds but I regret not giving it my all the first time round “I got reassurance then left”. 10 months ago I lost my little brother in a car accident the worst trauma it would have been So easy for my ocd to take over the grief. so many times I could feel the start of the panic attack but I have never had one. CTB was the best thing I ever did for my mental health I don’t know how would have been able to carry on with this last year. I really hope it goes well for you! If anyone is thinking of doing it people do! it’s so important to take care of our minds just as much as we look after our body’s. Sending lots of love to everyone. YANA!!

Have you been given a list of cognitive distortions? When you’re in a low/anxious mood pick out the distortions that apply to your thoughts. Btw Rhiannon, I’ve been meds for 17 years (anxiety+depression). Meds aren’t a bad thing. They might just help during the winter months for you if that’s a tough time. All the best.

I love that you chatted about your CBT experience so far. Just a thought, maybe person centred, regular therapy might be better than CBT if you already feel like you know a lot of the strategies etc. Just to explore yourself and the other things that you feel like CBT won't help. :)
Ps. Looooveee the moving in vlogs!😁

It's actually super important to compost food waste! When food is placed in the regular waste, when it is 'degrading' it releases harmful methane gases due to it not being able to properly degrade due to being surrounded by non-degradable stuff like plastic! So composting does much more than you think!!

This video was so close to home for me. I'm currently on the waiting list for one to one cbt with health in mind. They contact me monthly and the same as you I'm currently in a good place. I'm also concerned that putting techniques into practice isn't something I'm going to manage because when you are in one of those moods your not really thinking straight. I already got told a few of the techniques that you mentioned in my phone call sessions and I just really struggled with them. Hoping the one to one sessions will help with that. Thank you for sharing your experiences in this vlog :)

I'm a young Mum (24), and I've been on medication for 3 years now. I can honestly say it changed my life. I try my hardest to talk about it with my friends and do my own bit for lessening the stigma. Thearpy is great, but medication exists for a reason and I would honestly reccomend it as someone who has suffered from anxiety for a long time :)

    Hi Rhiannon,
Loving your vlogs, loving your house and all your lower waste tips you've adopted and been talking about. I just wondered if you knew that tea bags contain small amounts of plastic which is what holds them together in the water.
I wondered if you'd tried loose leaf tea which is a great way to avoid it, I switched a when i started composting (worm bin) and never looked back. It tastes nicer to me and uses less plastic.
And I'm glad you talked about cbt, I have crippling anxiety as well as other mental health problems and i wish more people would talk about it.
Good luck everything you're doing 😊❤️

Hey, I enjoy watching your vlogs, they are really good quality. Buy the way, I am from Slovenia :) I also had anxiety and depression, because I lost my dad almost 2 years ago. I didn't want to take medication, because I didn't want to depend on them, so I started to meditate and that helped me a lot. It makes inner self stronger. I think that's better solution for curing depression and anxiety, because it's natural treatment and it's more long term. I really suggest it for you. Wish you the best. With love, sanja
